| On February 22, 2007, our friend Billy Meyer was hit and run
by
three cars in Kansas City, Missouri. He has been better known as
"Billy Christ" for two decades in the Topeka, Lawrence, and
Kansas City music scenes.
Billy's back was broken in three (or more) places. Both lungs collapsed. He had organs destroyed. Billy's life has been radically and irreversibly changed. The most obvious change is that Billy will not walk as typical folks walk. His mobility and the range of motion of his extremities will be limited, although it is not clear to what degree. Billy's health is not stable enough for doctors to have a precise idea about the new trajectory of his life. And as with anyone who endures a tragedy of this nature, the time that has passed does not guarantee that all of the most critical hurdles have been passed. Billy is still in danger, and we should all be considerate of the magnitude of these dangers as he progresses through various critical stages. To help prepare for Billy's new life, we are asking that people consider donating time, money, or items which might bring money or attention to his situation and various organized benefits that will help cushion what is certain to be a shocking transition for Billy. Given the his predicted limited mobility, the needs are neither simple nor obvious. But Billy will need a wheelchair, and the wheelchair with which he is likely to wind up will not be of the quality, comfort, and flexibility we'd like to see for Billy. Billy will need a computer, and his computer will probably need augmentative/adaptive devices. His living quarters will need adaptations, as will his transportation. As Billy learns to adapt to his new condition, an appropriately prosthetic environment will be inconceivably costly. Donating money, items, or services for Billy will make a very small but meaningful impact on his future needs. You don't have to know Billy to donate or to have compassion for this tragedy. And you don't have to know Billy to know that he has influenced the most prominent faces in this small world from which we all intersect. Ask around -- you'll be shocked at how many folks have been influenced and touched (whether gently or provocatively) by Billy "Christ" Meyer. By clicking on the icon above, you will be redirected to PayPal, from which you can safely donate money to a fund dedicated to the ends listed above. A MySpace page has been created to keep folks aware of developments. |
