Tails from the Road

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND !!!

If heaven exists we hope it feels like Austin, TX mid-March. No trip is perfect and ours started out with a “huh?” factor. You can imagine our surprise when we discovered we were sharing a flight with Jessica Simpson and her entourage -- dog in tow, headed into one of the largest and best live music events of the year on this continent. Not a good sign. Weeding our luggage out of the mounds of Louis Vitton was a bit tiresome and we only felt sorry for the bands trying to snatch their guitars and road gear out of it all.

If you are a live music fan like us here at Sad Dog you should understand that SXSW is truly overwhelming in the choices you are faced with. 1200 bands in 60 venues over 4 days is an absolutely ridiculous idea to tackle and that doesn’t include in-conjunction events …parties, in-stores and non-showcase shows. You’ll hear about our experiences in coming Sad Dogs but we’ll share just a few in our highlights below this week.

But first, what’s going on in the KC area in coming days…

RECOMMENDED LISTENING

Grady (Austin, TX) “Y.U. So Shady?” (2004)

One thing you have to do a bit of at SXSW is stand in line, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Jaq and I raced across town to catch The Paybacks at the Continental Club on Saturday night. Whilst hoping and praying to make it in the door, the sound coming from the stage inside the club moved us both to pick up Grady’s CD. If Motorhead had a little brother that grew up in Deep South, U.S.A. my guess is they would sound an awful lot like Grady. Now Austin locals via Canada, the UK and South Texas this raucous bunch just won Best New Band at The Austin Music Awards. This trio plays hard-driving atomic blues that make you want shake it like the prettiest lovely at a broke down roadhouse. It looks like they are playing shows only in Texas for the time being but if they should be so kind as to give us a nod get out for this one. In the meantime, pick up “Y.U. So Shady?”  I must be on my 17th listen since returning from Texas.  -di

Death From Above 1979 “You’re A Woman, I’m A Machine” (2004) Last Gang Records

Folks holding badges that gained them advanced entry ahead of us lowly wristbanders prevented me from catching their show at SXSW. Thanks to a very cool co-worker I’ve been listening to this CD on shared ITunes for the last few months. I finally picked up the CD while in Austin and have been able to give it a focused listen, sans interruptions, the last few days. This is likely not a CD for all Sad Dog readers but it has become one of my favorites and I’ll recommend it to ears that appreciate the harder side of music. With only a bass and drum kit this blastedly (yes I just made up that word) pair from Toronto plant a firm foot inside the doors of metal but unleash some intoxicating pop/rock vocals. And some, the fair few, might even find it danceable. Fans of Queens of the Stone Age and their kin will likely welcome this record into their collection. -di

Scroat Belly "Daddy's Farm"

Most of you know the name Split Lip Rayfield, especially those of you who scroll through the confines of Sad Dog each week. Well long before we had Split Lip, we rocked to the root of what was to become one of our favorite bands in just the one small room at Davey's, long before we were blessed with a bit more space to move around. That band was bluegrassin', punk rockin', metal screamin' Scroat Belly. For those of you who have bought all the Split Lip records and still crave more, you should definitely visit www.bloodshotrecords.com where you will find that you can purchase the recently

re-released “Daddy's Farm” and experience "a journey into the Heartland of Darkness, where drugs, poverty, incest, violence and alcohol form the lifeblood that beats black and fierce in more hearts than you want to think about -Bloodshot Records." Those folks at Bloodshot really know how to tell is like it was. -jaq

HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH

March 25 - April 10 @ JUST OFF BROADWAY THEATRE

Yaaaaowza!!! This is the story of "internationally ignored" singer Hedwig and her search for stardom, and love. The story is complex, telling the tale of a boy named Hanzel who agrees to a sex change that will allow him to marry a G.I. and get over the Berlin Wall to freedom. She escapes the confines of Germany but is left with an "angry inch" when the operation is botched. She lands herself in Kansas City and so goes a journey of trials and tribulations, lies and deceits, and the search for her "other half" while belting out a score with performances that rival the best of the glam rockers. This story and score, written

by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask, went from a little theatre in NYC's West Village to the big screen and has proven to be one of my all-time favorite films, not to mention up on the top of my list of favorite soundtracks. Now, Eubank Productions is bringing us their rendition of Hedwig and bringing the diva back to Kansas City! -jaq

JAQ’S NOTES:

The beauty of traveling to Austin in the spring for the annual SXSW Festival is that for a music lover, you are literally placed in the position of being a kid in a candy store, equipped with a plastic wristband that for all intensive purposes gives you permission to taste all that you set your eyes on. This year was no exception as I walked away with stories o'plenty.

I had the privilege of seeing old favorites such as Jon Dee Graham 6 times, twice with Alejandro Escovedo, twice with the Resentments, once solo, and once at a taco bar while he was conducting business. Yes, this was a strange outcome of the weekend and has already inspired one of my traveling partners to write a song about me titled "Jon Dee

Thinks I'm a Stalker". I can't help that he showed up every place I showed up.

It just kept getting more interesting and I ended up bumping into our buddy, and bad ass guitarist, Dan from the Paybacks. I was waiting in line outside the Continental Club, listening to Grady, and wishin' like a mad dog I was inside the venue. About that time Dan trotted by. Well, you know me, I immediately grabbed him to say hello, and dropped a hint that maybe he could pull some strings to get us in the building. He didn't have any strings to pull, but he put out a valiant effort as he bounced up and down in front of the doorman chanting, "Let the Ladies In, Let the Ladies In"!! Well, like a rain dance without the rain, he must have appealed to the spirits, because we were right up front as

The Paybacks gave the Austin crowd a full-throttle jaw droppin' dose of that Detroit Rock that keeps us running back for more.

I guess a long exhausting weekend of waiting in line and stalking lead me to my annual visit to Waterloo Records, where I purchased massive amounts of new music. Right there at the "listening" center, I spotted the new release by my Austin friend Andrew Duplantis. I immediately made the purchase, and when I checked out what was inside, I discovered it was filled with photos of couches from his road travels. Well, low and behold, there was a photo of my little ol' southwest patterned couch looking very disheveled from the party that took place the night before. So my couch is more famous than I. What's a girl to do?

It is always a perk to get to see those bands/artists you've seen before, and who doesn't love to hear stories from our travels, but what thrills me the most about SXSW is that I always discover that one artist I've never seen before that just blows me away. This year it is Martha Wainwright. The name might ring a bell as she is the daughter of singer/songwriter/actor Loudon Wainwright III and sister to singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright. I might have missed her show if I hadn't been so set on seeing Slaid Cleaves (his 2004 release "Wishbones" was one of my great finds of last year). Our entire Austin

crew went to the show, and what luck, because one of our music warriors convinced me to stick around for Martha who immediately followed Slaid. She caught my attention with her first note and I was compelled to stick around for the entire show. She has guts, and balls, and grit, and a complete openness that invites you to share her inner most

secrets. She has crazy sex appeal while not being a tragic beauty. She has the lyrical inhibition of Liz Phair and a voice that leaves you drawing comparisons to Bjork, PJ Harvey, Rickie Lee Jones, and a young Emmylou Harris without being able to really pinpoint her sound at all. She can pour out her soul as if she's in pain, but somehow still holds onto an innocent grin that smacks of the cat that ate the canary. She has a unique style that leaves you feeling refreshed and relieved that in a time with so many musical influences someone can actually pave her own path and shell out a sound not heard before. I purchased her debut EP "Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole" (yeah, starting to get the picture), the only downside being that it is a 5 song EP. The upside is that she’s slated to release her full length debut in Spring. I am a bit fooled by the snow, is it spring yet?

So I am back from another successful trip, pumped for upcoming KC shows, and carefully considering whom I will be stalking next. Be on the alert, you might be on the list.

Account Name: SXSW ’06 Fund

Account Number: AusTINsxsw826go (deposits welcome)

Profile: First-Timer

Because of my dad’s profession I grew up going to see arena concerts about every other week since knee high. In college, I carried along the entertainment road I grew up on but ventured to smaller venues, going to shows at the local bar 3-4 times a week. And now, I’m a 9-5’er that meets my morning coffee with ears ringing and, I’m sure, a hint of stale beer and smoke lingering more than one morning a week.

The last week I spent in Austin, TX for SXSW. I’m not sure where to go from here. I’m not sure it gets better than this. Austin, boundary to boundary is spread with what I love. LIVE music. Showcase to showcase, even if it wasn’t my thing I saw quality musicians and people out doing the same thing I love, night after night, going to see live music in packed houses.

I’ve come back with a depleted bank account, swollen feet, that are just getting back to normal size, a truck load of new CDs, killer memories, some new readers (hello to you all!) and a shit eating grin. On to the highlights…..

Alejandro Escovedo The past couple years for us Alejandro fans have been a bit worrisome as he’s been faced with some serious health concerns. I’m here to tell you he is back strong, and lookin’ damn sexy with that familiar sound that pulls on your heart strings one minute and rocks you the next. Friday night Alejandro, joined by Jon Dee Graham, Mark Andes, John Cale, and string section, under beautiful sunset Austin skies ---  rocked it. It was great joy to see that smile again after such a long absence from a stage near me. After a toxic rendition of “I Wanna Be Your Dog” Alejandro swore never to play it again. Lucky for us we caught him on Sunday night at the Continental Club and damn if the boys didn’t blow a fuse. And, well, what do you do after that besides play “I Wanna Be Your Dog”. A well done cover will take the spank out of any performer but when that performer reaches into their personal catalog and delivers crowd favorites with grace and fury, well, I consider

myself spanked. Check his site, looks like he’s doing some short tours again hopefully in a town near you…but not a KC show on the list…yet. www.alejandroescovedo.com

Billy Joe Shaver -- Suffering from an ear infection and just released from the hospital our Honky Tonk Hero did an in-store at the best record store on the planet Waterloo Records (see below). He recently released an autobiography “Honky Tonk Hero” and I shared a moment with him and came out with a signed copy. His crooked smile, humble presence, and been-there lyrics will bring me back stage-front every time. His story is the saddest I’ve read but remarkably possesses hope and great passion to do his thing.

Ian McLagan & The Bump Band, and The Resentments

Private Party @ The Nest @ Big Red Sun Nursery

While catching a Steve Poltz (Davey’s Uptown April 20) show on Friday night his booking agent slipped us an invitation to a party she was hosting the next day. The Nest @ Big Red Sun is an intimate outdoor venue that feels more like a Zen garden. Away from the heart of SXSW, it’s not a place that is describable with words. Just pay a visit the next time you are in Austin. Appropriately MC’d by Pamela Des Barres, “The World’s Most Famous Groupie”, legendary rock icon Ian McLagan & The Bump Band were only shadowed by the beauty of the setting. Ian played in KC in December and for those of you that missed it, (myself included) shame. Ian was a member of Small Faces which later became Faces when Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood joined the band. He has recorded and toured with the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and a host of others. He has now set himself up nicely in a solo career with The Bump Band and calls Austin home.

Waterloo Records A store for music fans no doubt. The beauty of this store is that all CD’s are in Alpha Order!!! For someone that doesn’t always get the categorization of music THAT - is pure joy. On a shelf above all the rows upon rows of CDs are all the CDs of bands showcased at SXSW, and where and when they are playing again in alpha order. Waterloo is the bellweather of what record stores should be.

A great big smack-in-the-ass-hug to my traveling partners. I’ll see you next year.
