KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND !!!
FRIDAY, MAY 6
The Black Presidents, The Rosemantics, The Golden Hearted Whores, and The Architects @ EL TORREON
7:30pm, all ages
Well be heading to the El Torreon this evening to catch one of our KC favorites, The Golden Hearted Whores. The Whores have been called a lot of things but always fall rightly into the category of rock-n-roll, aligned in style with some of the greatsT. Rex, Iggy Pop, and Bowie. The masters of the setlist these boys are. It doesnt take long for a new song to become a favorite and they always seem to line up the new and familiar just right while throwing in that just right cover for good measure. They do what any great band should, they always give the ladies something to shake to. Cody Wyoming (vocals, guitar) returned to the KC area in November of 03 and quickly enlisted KC music veteran Robbie Wagner (Pamper The Madman, Eric), Ben Ruth (Overstep, Grand Marquis) and Adam Stotts (Overstep, Lucky Graves) to fill out The Whores. Wed like to wish the boys luck as they head into the studio this week.
Brother Trucker w/ Outlaw Jim and the Whiskey Benders @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
Country roots rockers Brother Trucker, hailing from Des Moines, IA, are most certainly the band to see for those who embrace the Americana genre. They have received rave reviews in No Depression Magazine and have had the pleasure of Bo Ramsey (Lucinda Williams, Greg Brown) lend his slide guitar prowess to their tune For J off of their 2003 release Something Simple. Lead singer/songwriter Andy Flemings intimate vocals and heartfelt lyrics of the down trodden are perfectly cupped by Mike Fitzpatricks guitar playing, John Colans rhythm, and the bass of Lyle Kevin Hogue.

The Caves, Anvil Chorus, and Hello Superworld @ THE BRICK
Tonight should get interesting as they try to fit my friend Andy Mortons (Danger Bob) new project, the Lawrence based 17-piece Hello Superworld, on the stage at the Brick. Sometimes compared to Polyphonic Spree, obviously due to the size and energy of the group, Andy prefers to describe them as a great big happy garage-rock pop band. I have not had the chance to check em out, but man, I am insanely curious. -jaq

Heavy Trash Heavy Trash Released April 19, 2005
Jon Spencer and Matt Verta-Ray are shellin out the now sound of rock-a-billythe perfect soundtrack for boozy all-night throw downs, pettin parties, and psychedelic fright shows Yep Roc Records. That sounds about on cue to what I envision happening once Jon Spencer got his hands on Rock-A-Billy. This is a purchase I cant pass up based on Jon Spencers projects and collaborations such as The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Boss Hog, and a disc that should have a place in everyones cd collection, The Blues Explosion and R.L. Burnside A Ass Pocket of Whiskey. -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
Well, its that time of year again when I roll into my fit of shameless self-promotion.
As most of you know, I am a glutton for punishment, so to keep true to myself, I agreed to take on yet another year and 60 + bands, by joining the team that will bring you Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival 2005 (June 18, 19, and 20, Clinton State Park, Lawrence, KS). Now pups, I know this isnt everyones thing, but Im bustin my hump for this event and I feel the need to give a shout out to all the Sad Dogs that find this right up their alley. This event most definitely appeals to the folks who are into the jam thang. However, I want to fill you in on the Americana factor that Wakarusa has to offer. This year we have:
Wilco (Out on the road after the Grammy win for Ghost), Calexico, Neko Case (Bloodshot Records Americana Songstress), Son Volt (Back with a hot new line-up and a new release), Split Lip Rayfield (Closed the fest last year, and will once again, with one of the most hell-raisin shows to date), as well as Hackensaw Boys, The Gourds, Martin Sexton, Junior Brown, Old Crow Medicine Show, Truckstop Honeymoon, Jeff and Vida Band, Drakkar Sauna, and Arthur Dodge and the Horsefeathers. Yes, its a camping festival, but its not mandatory to camp to enjoy these bands. We have day passes available, we have hotel package deals, and we offer shuttles to and from town. So take a visit to www.wakarusa.com and check it out for yourselves. Wakarusa is blast and provides the perfect excuse to spend some time in the great outdoors.
DIS NOTES:
Kansas Citys The Official Rock and Roll Radio Show, 2-3pm, on 90.1FM KKFI www.kkfi.org
No matter what my Sunday schedule (read: couch bound or chores) brings, I always try to make time for The Official Rock-n-Roll Radio Show. When I first started listening, it was hosted by Gary and Alegra Cloud (both formerly of KCs Boot Hill). Lately, my Sad Dog partner in crime Jauqui and our good friend Bill Sandahl (SOL Productions/Donkey Show) have joined Gary in studiolearning the ropes, spinning their favorites and givin the highlights off the Sad Dog calendar. I encourage you to tune in and catch the sound of some of the bands we tell you about every week. Lets be honest our words can only go so far and what it really comes down to is hearing the music. Its been a regular music discovery avenue for me. Whether it be some new CD to pick up or pointing me in a direction towards a local band I havent yet seen. They deliver the goods and often times with humorous and insightful rock-n-roll commentary and from time to time an in-studio guest appearance.you never know who might show up. In an effort to build the local music library at The Official Rock-n-Roll Radio Show wed like to encourage local KC bands to submit CDs to add to the catalog. The hosts often play bands with a show in the coming week or shows theyve just seen. While many of the bands you read about in Sad Dog are played on the show already the catalog is not yet full. Email us at
sad-dog@att.net and well let you know if your CD is absent.
