On their website they provide links and ask us to give a shout out to their friends Steve Poltz, Southern Culture on the Skids, Rev. Horton Heat, Mojo Nixon, and the New Duncan Imperials. Well, Ive never seen these boys live but I do like the company they keep. jaq

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17
Candye Kane w/ The Rumblejetts $8 @ KNUCKLEHEADS SALOON
First of allYOU MUST CHECK OUT A SHOW AT KNUCKLEHEADS OUTDOOR STAGE! This hideaway in the East Bottoms transports you to a little wonderland by just turning the bend to Fog Cycles. Our first visit to this venue was last week for Joe Ely. Whew, What a perfect night!
Tonight is a great opportunity to check out the venue and get a double dose of Candye Kane. What a tale she has to tell. Candye found her home when she found the blues, a place where women have colorful pasts. Candye is often quoted as saying that she is a black drag queen trapped in a white womans body and she can belt out Led Zeppelin with the best of them. I need to fit a weekly visit to Knuckleheads into my schedule, and this sounds like the perfect opportunity. And if you get there early (6pm) you can take in a free Honky Tonk Swing Dance lesson. -jaq

BIG SCREEN:
Gus Van Sants LAST DAYS (Starts Friday, August 12, 2005)
This film starring Michael Pitt, tells the story of Blake, a Seattle musician who is buckling under the weight of fame, obligations and a mounting feeling of isolation IMDB.com. Most reviews are careful to point out that the story is simply reminiscent of Kurt Cobains. Well that is most obvious once one catches a glimpse of the promo posters for Last Days. Mr. Van Sant has gone to great lengths to transform Mr. Pitt into a character looking the spitting image of the Nirvana front man and 90s icon. I will give it a try as I recommend more than a few of Van Sants films including Drugstore Cowboy (1989), My Own Private Idaho (1991), and Good Will Hunting (1997). -jaq

SMALL SCREEN:
Alejandro Escovedos By the Hand of the Father on AUSTIN CITY LIMITS,
Saturday, August 13, 2005. Check your local PBS affiliate to find showtimes.
It seems that KCPT, Channel 19 is not currently airing Austin City. This was a very disheartening discovery as I am a woman living without cable, satellite and access to channels that may be showing this incredible performance. I fully intend on beginning my campaign to bring back Austin City Limits to KCPT. For those of you in other cities, visit www.austincitylimits.com and the PBS Station Finder to check for ACL
shows on your local stations. See Jaqs notes for more details on By the Hand of the Father.

The Knitters, Friday, August 12 (10:30pm, CBS) on DAVID LETTERMAN
Members of LA punk band X and Dave Alvin of the Blasters formed this
crazy little country band back in the 80s. To our delight, The Knitters are back on tour in support of The Modern Sounds of The Knitters. Tune into Letterman Friday for a taste.

JAQS NOTES:
By the Hand of the Father, Alejandro Escovedo
Through the years Austin songwriter/musician Alejandro Escovedo has delved into many musical genres, all of which he makes his own. We can enjoy the punk rock of his band the True Believers and garage punk sound of Buick MacKane. His solo work mixes Austin country rock, Americana, Stooges influenced punk and straight on rock and roll, delivering extraordinary ballads that can bring a tear to the eye to all out rock songs that beg you to dance till you drop. In the past years he has worked with playwrights Teresa Chavez, Eric Gutierrez and Rosie Portillo on a theatrical production incorporating Alejandros music to tell its stories. By the Hand of the Father tells stories of the 20th century journey of a Mexican-American father and the legacy of Mexican-American immigrants. Special guests include Ruben Ramos (singing Rosalie), Kevin Sifuentes
(Actor), Rosie Portillo (Actress), Rosie Flores (singing Ballad of the Sun and Moon), and Pete Escovedo (singing Inside This Dance). Although this a performance of By the Hand of the Father is airing on Austin City Limits this Saturday, August 13, KCPT is currently not airing this program. It will be a rare treat for those of you who are able to pick up ACL on another station. For others you can enjoy the songs from this theatrical production via the CD out on the Texas Music Group label. Be sure to visit www.alejandroescovedo.com to make your purchase and give a shout out to KCPT to request that Austin City Limits be included in their weekly schedule. Al has toured with this production in the past. Check in on his tour dates as he might take the show on the road again in the future. It would be worth the road trip.

DIS NOTES:
As Jaq mentions above we made our first venture out to Knuckleheads in the East Bottoms last weekend. Why the hell did we wait so long? We hereby christen it the best outdoor music venue in the greater KC area. Just a short drive from mid-town, one-mile North of Independence Ave under the Chestnut Bridge youll feel transported, as our friend Pete says, to a shack bar in Key West. Sans the ocean its just far enough away from midtown and familiar faces to approach the feel of a vacation. A large patio with plenty of seating nestled between two stages was the perfect setting on a late-summer night. A small stage in one corner held the opening band while the larger stage set in front of an old caboose awaited to showcase the main act. How appropriate as the bar couldnt lie any closer to a functioning train track. The beauty of the weather was only shadowed by the yummy smells of the grill and sounds of Joe Ely on stage. I love it when Jaq and our friend Pete say, Di, you really need to check this band outit has only lead to great things. Last weekend - no exception. If Johnny Cash would have found roots in Texas I imagine he would have come out sounding like Joe Ely. I never draw comparisons to Cash but Im doing it this time. Joe was joined on stage by accordion player and Tejano Record Grammy Winner Joel Guzman and what a vision these two made. (Joel looks like a Latin Marky Mark). The sound of a train coming up the tracks was all they needed to break their set list and lay into Boxcars. While this was my first Joe Ely show I gather it would have made an excellent live CD release. Joe played a song called, She Never Spoke Spanish to Me, a crowd favorite. Following She Never he decided to do something he apparently rarely does and do the follow up or sequel to that song, She Finally Spoke Spanish to Me. This gentleman is one that feeds off the crowd so obviously. His rendition of Robert Earl Keens The Road Goes on Forever changed the dynamic of the evening. We went to a concert but it ended in a party with the sentiment that we were all in it together. While this two man show was not a disappointment I understand Joe Ely with full band is even better. I reckon hell be back. We all had that much fun.
