FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4
Amy Farrand, The Rounders (Oklahoma City), and The Ramalamas @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
What a great night of music! First you have the multi-talented singer/songwriter/drummer/guitarist/bassist Amy Farrand (Shotgun Idols, American Catastrophe). We dont know what she will pull out of her bag of tricks this eve, but you can guarantee it will be well worth getting to Daveys in a timely fashion so that you dont miss her performance. Along with Ms. Farrand this eve is Rounder from Oklahoma with their bluesy rock/Americana sound. One of our Sad Dog friends caught these guys recently in Tulsa and is highly suggesting we check em out. Thanks Jen for the heads up! Topping off the evening is KCs maximum punk and soul quartet the Ramalamas.
This night is jam packed with talent and should prove to be one eclectic night of music.

The Grand Marquis and Drakkar Sauna @ THE BRICK
I just opened and email from the Grand Marquis and they were kind enough to remind me that tomorrow is another First Friday art walk in the Crossroads district. What a great nightcap to spending a beautiful night checking out KC artists than heading over to 1733 McGee and catching a show. The Grand Marquis always prove to shell out a lively night of what they call Jumpin Blues and Hot Swinging Jazz. With them this evening is Drakkar Sauna. And I hope they dont mind, but I borrowed the Grand Marquis description of Drakkar, talented rootsy folky hillbilly stompin duo, because it was too juicy and enticing not to share. Tonight is the night to show off your dance moves. -jaq

Dolly Parton @ MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM
I remember putting on the Dolly tunes as a kid and singing every word to every song, Jolene, Coat of Many Colors, My Tennessee Mountain Home Love Is Like A Butterfly, Joshua, and many more. When it comes to country she is the real thing! She grew up on a Tennessee farm, one of 12 children and was performing on the Grand Ole Opry by 13. She inspired an entire theme park, Dollyworld, for crying out loud! She is currently touring on her new release Those Were The Days featuring special guests Judy Collins, Alison Krauss, Kris Kristofferson, Roger McGuinn and many more. This little lady is a living legend and my childhood would not have been the same without her music. For those of you who still think Whitney Houston originally sang I Will Always Love You, run, not walk, to the record store, purchase a Dolly retrospective and take a listen to the real thing. -jaq

Counter Culture Militia is a gathering of rowdies that exchange.well, a lot about a lot on the Shotgun Idols Forum. Boozeday Tuesday Matinee 8 10:30pm @ MIKES TAVERN
Featuring: Tarbox Ramblers and Mike Ireland
Tarbox Ramblers are a foursome that hail from Cambridge, MA. Honestly, I had never heard of them but saw them on the line up for an upcoming Boozeday Tuesday so I hopped onto the trusty internet to see what they are all about. Continuing to tour in support of the 2004 release "A Fix Black East" we are in for a treat next week. With upright bass, a little slide guitar, a fiddle and mix of percussion, topped by unvarnished vocals create a haunting sinister aura to their unique flavor. At times a smothering dirty delta blues they also explore early century Americana, hillbilly gospel and a bit of honky tonk. Fans of KC locals In the Pines, American Catastrophe or the Hearers would do well to check these guys out. The sampling of songs I was able to find isn't enough. I'll be there and will likely walk out with their entire catalog. Their most recent produced by Jim Dickinson (Lucero, Aretha Franklin, Big Star, The Replacements, etc., etc.) -di

Art Opening: The Art of Jacob Weller @ THE MERCY SEAT (210 E. 16th Street)
Normally we stick to the musical arts here at Sad Dog HQ, but I have to drift from the norm this week in order to urge you to explore the artwork of my friend Jacob.
His current work is an exploration of different cultural and art historical influences, creating a cross cultural and integrated view of humanity that focuses on similarities, rather than differences. I have always enjoyed his art and I hope you take the chance to enjoy it as well. Congratulations Jacob!
His work will be displayed through the month of November and the opening reception is happening Friday, November 4 (7p Midnight).

MusicRelief.org Another friend of mine, Jeremy Goldstein, along with Ed Hickey, Brock Batten and Travis Millard, are doing something really wonderful with their new site musicrelief.org. This non-profit organization was founded and developed by artists in response to the natural disasters that have recently ravaged the world. All of the proceeds generated on this site are donated to three charities, Tamils Rehabilitation Organization, Doctors Without Borders and American Cancer Society. The beauty of this endeavor is that it is a long-term commitment looking beyond the struggles we are facing today. This is a very cool site. I hope you all visit it soon.

JAQS NOTES:
Bettye LaVette: Ive Got My Own Hell to Raise
There are many ways I discover new musiclive shows, magazines, web surfing, Sonic Spectrum, Cypress Avenue, KKFIbut sometimes the music just finds me. That would be the case with this powerful Detroit Soul Singer, Ms. Bettye LaVette. Her music found me, and kept finding me. A few weeks ago I suggested some albums for your listening pleasure as we moved into the fall months. I was in the mood to make some new musical purchases and asked for suggestions. Kasey Rausch, came back to me with Betty LaVette. Then, shortly after making my purchase, while I was still digesting this new find, Sad Dog HQ receives an email from Sarah Beasley, another woman whose judgement I fully trust, urging us to check out, yes, Betty LaVette. It was official, she found me.
This disc is a gem my friends. LaVette has been singing soul for about four decades now, and it seems she is finally getting her deserved recognition with this new release. The ten tracks on the disc are all covers, or in LaVettes case re-workings, of songs by female songwriters Rosanne Cash, Sinead OConnor, Dolly Parton, Joan Aratrading, Aimee Mann, Sharon Robinson, Cathy Majeski/John Scott Sherrill, Toni Brown, Fiona Apple, and my favorite, Lucinda Williams. She had me sold on her knock-out gritty rendition of Lucindas Joy on the first note. See, LaVette doesnt just cover tunes, she devours them, makes them her own, uses the skeleton but gives it a entirely new life. She has been compared, and in my opinion most definitely can be compared, to great soul singers such as Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin and even Otis Redding.
Heres the kickerMark your calendar pups because Ms. Bettye LaVette will be at the Hurricane, November 15 and we need to give her a huge KC welcome.

DIS NOTES:
Ever laugh so hard you were brought to tears and woke up the next day with sore face and abdomen muscles? Yea, me too. Most recently after taking in this weeks Boozeday Tuesday featuring Dave Chilidog Crawford, Cody Wyoming and Robin and Heather of The Last Call Girls. The foursome shared the stage switching off amongst their chosen originals and covers in what is known as The All Night Country Jam. This little line up happened quite frequently some years back and we were shown a much appreciated rebirth Tuesday night at Mikes Tavern. Regrets for you sorry souls that didnt make it out. I have begged for you all that well get to see it again, well see if my pleading pays off. Dave Chilidog Crawford showed his prowess by picking up the acoustic he laid down some 5+ years ago when he last played these songs out live in KC. Lets hope he has found the taste and well see him more often. Songs about weekend lesbians, his somewhat unnatural love of PBR, yearning to be a homosexual because they get all the pretty girls and the good cocaine, being too f---ed up to f---, his attraction for the more curvy Belinda Carlisle, and the sexual excellence of hippy girls simply must be shared with the masses. He is a lyrical comic genius which nearly shadows his catchy tunes. Word has it he has somewhat of a strong reluctance to ever record his mastery which is just sad. Chilidog did steal the show as his stage mates will undoubtedly attest to but Cody Wyoming proved once again why he is referred to as the human jukebox and the lovely ladies of The Last Call Girls made us proud with their wit and wisdom of why its not always good to be such a lovely lady. These folks are good for the mental health and I reckon the country.
