Welcome New Sad Pups!

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

WELCOME NEW SAD PUPS!
Mr. Tim Finn, Pop Music Critic for the Kansas City Star, was kind enough to mention Sad Dog in his article about local music, which appeared in todays Preview Section. From that mention we attracted quite a few new music lovers requesting to be added to our E-Letter list. We appreciate your interest and thought we would share a bit about Sad Dog to bring you up to speed. Come April 2006, we will have put out Sad Dog every Thursday rain or shine for two years. You will not see every band playing in Kansas City listed on Sad Dog because we are very particular about our live music. We have no formula and no guidelines to what bands/artists fill the pages, they just have to inspire us. And of course, we promote the heck out of local bands/artists in hopes that you will hit the clubs and Support Your Local Live Music! But we dont stop at local musicwe also fill you in on touring artists coming through Kansas City as well. Most importantly, we do not consider ourselves music critics. We are lovers of live music here to tell our stories and hopefully inspire you to hit the clubs and SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC!
Welcome to the Sad Dog family!

Federation of Horsepower, The Chicken Hawks and 3 Minute Hero @ MIKES TAVERN
Federation of Horsepower has been known to scare other bands out of the genre of full throttle rock in roll. Take to their My Space and have a listen for your self. www.myspace.com/federationofhorsepower. The Chicken Hawks hail from Sioux City, IA and are out in support of their 2nd record, Hard Hitting Songs for Hard Hit People. Theyve drawn comparisons to Gun Club, X, and The Cramps and that sounds just delicious. 3 Minute Hero didnt have to travel far to bring their power pop as the guy leading this trio is Mikes very own Mike Devine.

Its Over @ THE CUP AND SAUCER
Free and all ages. 10pm 12:30am
The boys will be unleashing 4 new songs!
If I had a record label these boys would be signed in a heartbeat. They make me jump around the room like a little kid with heir high-energy 60s and 70s influenced pop rock that cant help but lighten the heart and lift the spirit. Dont get me wrong, Its Over is fun, but they arent just some bubblegum pop group. These boys are solid and smart with intelligent lyrics and catchy tunes. So what if they travel with a huge fish reminiscent of Nemo, just succumb to that which is Its Over, throw your arms in the air and sing Hallelujah. And most importantly, get a good dose of them this weekend at The Cup. -jaq

Needmore Discs presents:
Boozeday Tuesday Matinee 8 10:30pm @ MIKES TAVERN
Featuring: Acoustic Songwriter Showcase with Tony Ladesich, John Stubblefield, and Chad Rex.
I am purrrrrrring like a little kitten, and softly licking my paws, in anticipation of a night spent with some acoustic guitar and three of my favorite KC songwriters.
Tony (Pendergast), John (The Bad Ideas) and Chad Rex (currently flying solo). These boys know how to hit home with their mix the country and the rock. Tony leans more towards the Americana rock sounds of greats Steve Earle and Neil Young, John feeds off of his Outlaw heroes and Chad tends to let what some like to call Alt-Country guide his musical style. Support your local songwriters pups! -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
So what is up with this VooDoo venue @ Harrahs Casino? I occasionally check out their full-page ad in the Pitch, for a giggle, as it seems that VooDoo is the place to go to see just about any tribute band around, from The Beatles to Pearl Jam. One thing is for sure; it VooDoo is the most genre-defying venue in the city. This week their ad promotes Air Supply, electro jam band Sound Tribe Sector Nine, The Bodeans, Better Than Ezra, and some of that pop country that will send me vehemently running away. Whoa! But it wasnt until I read that Lucinda Williams will be gracing the stage in a rare acoustic performance on March 3 that I decided to actually take the VooDoo seriously. As much as I hate to think of headin out to The Casino for a show, I cannot stay away from this one. I guess it will soon become that VooDoo that I do.

DIS NOTES:
On my long list of favorite things to do reading sits right up there at the top and Im a sucker for a biography. Sometimes its the need to live vicariouslythe life unlived. Sometimes its a need to understand the complexity of heroes. And sometimes its simply a guilty pleasure. I picked up the book from the top of the Winter Reading Stack just a few days ago. Hardcore Troubadour: The Life & Near Death of Steve Earle (by Lauren St. John 2003). It begins in Nashville 1992 and Earle has sold a plane ticket for $100 which he then spends at a crack house. That plane ticket was to deliver him to his lawyer in New York who was awaiting his signature on a multi-million dollar record contract. The struggle to create his music in a fit of addiction, tumultuous relationships, wanderlust, brushes with the law, leads to his fall and his rise to eventually win a Grammy in 2005 (Best Contemporary Folk Album for The Revolution StartsNow. Steve Earle is not the great music icon, hes not the voice behind a generation, and hes certainly not a chart buster. But hes got a story. His story creates a captivating tug that makes it a hard one to put down. Im not half way through it and it may damn well be one of the finest music biographies Ive read. For you rock-n-rollers, it reads like a Please Kill Me for the country set.with significantly more substance. www.steveearle.com
