KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!
CALL TO ACTION:
Last week we received the news that our friend Kirk Rundstrom (Split Lip Rayfield, Kirk Rundstrom Band, Grain and Demise) has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. He is in good spirits, is keeping a positive attitude and is seeking immediate and aggressive treatment. Kirk is strong and willful and with the help of his family, friends and fans he will beat this illness and be gracing our stages soon. The treatment, however, will be very expensive, and as quality insurance for musicians is hard to come by, he can use some support. We dont have solid details but we did get word that two benefit shows are in the works, one at The Uptown in Kansas City and one at the Bottleneck in Lawrence. You will know details as we know them. You can also visit the Split Lip Rayfield website, www.splitliprayfield.com to make and immediate donation.

The Dark Circles, Anvil Chorus and American Catastrophe @ THE BRICK
This week certainly isnt hurting for some great line-ups from Kansas City bands. Tonight at The Brick, while diverse from each other, these bands are wisely paired up on this stage. The Dark Circles give a nod to the 80s with their darkly-rich new wave sound, Anvil Chorus who is unmatched in their artful-ethereal take and American Catastrophe who mix the best of darkness and foreboding rendering an edgy feeling of Old West storytelling.

New Band Alert! @ RECORD BAR
Blackout Gorgeous, Aubrey, The Monitor and Lovers in Transit
What a great idea, NEW BAND ALERT! In one night you can check out four bands making their entrance into the KC music scene. We have already had the chance to get a glimpse of one of these bands - The Monitor. Their sound has been described as dark 80s dance pop drawing comparisons to Bauhaus and Depeche Mode. Tonight is The Monitors CD RELEASE PARTY and you can be sure they will have some copies of that new release Surveillance as well some t-shirts to boot. These guys arent messin around! Get your rock and roll nose to their Myspace site as they have songs posted from the new EP.

BR549 w/ The Avett Brothers @ THE BOTTLENECK
Its hard to believe BR549 has been doing their Country thing for more than a decade now. Two of the fellows in this band used to call Lawrence home and we shared the same stopping grounds back in the day. But folks, this hard working country outfit, who now call Nashville home, are well worth the trip. Country is the word I choose to encompass all the sonic tricks these boys pull outfrom honky-tonk, to raise the roof gospel and at times even a bit rockin, its always a great show. We especially dig the title of their new record Dog Days.

Love on the Rocks 10pm Featuring DJ Neil Diamond, aka Robert Moore of Sonic Spectrum @ RECORD BAR
I finally made it to the Record Bar to check out Rexs Honky Tonk Tuesday night this week and had a blast. Rex and the Misery Boys were onstage giving me that sweet sound of honky-tonk and it seemed that friends just kept pouring out of the woodwork. I would say it was the place to be seen if it werent for the fact that the friends I bumped into arent really place to be seen type folks. The night was laid back but lively, urging a cowboy or cowgirl to belly up, grab a cold one, and ease on into the week. If youre in the mood to relax with good friends and good tunes you cant beat Tuesday night at Record Bar. Best thing, the show starts early so you can get in your fun and still get home in time to catch some shuteye. But for those of you wanting to get to bed early, beware, because after Rex is done playing a DJ du jour hits the stage. This week it was Brandon Phillips of the Architects spinnin old soul. I had an amazingly difficult time getting out the door. It seemed every time I handed out goodbye hugs another I love this song and cant leave now moment occurred and I stayed a bit longer. -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
This week has been an absolute dream week for a live music lover like me.
Outside of a minor cold bug that sent me to bed at 9:30pm last night making me miss Richard Buckner, a singer/songwriter I have been waiting weeks to see, (Urgh!!!), I have been in live music heaven from honky tonk with Rex Hobart to a KC musician all star jam led by Pendergast at Daveys that got me a bit choked up with pride.
It was all kicked off last Friday night at the Brick with a line up that kept an ol sleepy head like me out till the bar closed. The night started off with Whiskey Boots, a powerful duo comprised of Heather Loflin (Honeybaby) on guitar and Amy Farrand (Shotgun Idols, American Catastrophe) on drums. Now these ladies know how to rock! It is amazing how much sound they shell out from just three instruments, one being Heathers full tilt rock vocals. But dont be mislead, she isnt hiding a mediocre voice with rock lungs, this ladys voice is downright beautiful and unique enough to call her own. There is a vibrato in her sound that yells passion and pain, and, well, lets you know she doesnt take any shit. Of course Amy is one of those people you love to hate for being able to pick up any instrument she puts in her hands and coming off like a master of her craft.
The Throttlers took the stage next and delivered what is always a performance not to be missed, shovin that high-octane rock right in your face. I have been a Throttlers fan for years and they continue to feed my craving for rock and roll.
What came next was an event that I had not expected in a million years. Yes, it was an event, a revival of sorts, a revival led by the band Valient Thor The Legendary Venusion RocknRollers. The band came out looking like they had been time warped directly from the late 70s donning long hair, afros, cut off jean jackets with their logo splattered across the back and kickin out the metal much in the vein of Judas Priest or The MC5. They are over the top, theatrical and insanely humorous without ever coming across like a fake. These guys are the real thing. In trying to describe the lead singer I have come up with the following, Furry Heavy Metal Inspirational Speaking Gnome on Speed. Oh Yeah!!! They certainly brought on the metal but took ample time for the furry gnome to raise the roof in inspirational ranting. The show brought out all the rockers in the city and, at one point, had us all down on the floor in a circular pow wow. It is certainly a show not to be missed next time around! For now, check out their release Total Universe Man for a little taste of the madness that is Valient Thor.

DIS NOTES:
I shared most of that experience with Jaq last Friday but headed out a bit early in the evening and caught The Architects in a little space next to Mercy Seat. Turns out they did bring some of that new record to life and was I ever happy my timing was on. It was a brief rendezvous but it seems thats all it took to make me a fan. Heres one of those bands that I honestly did not appreciate the first couple go rounds. It was a bit to indie for my taste but theyve infused some soul and rock-n-roll swagger into a bigger sound. Thats more like it. Ive been listening online and will surely add their CD to my collection. (New CD Revenge in stores 2/21/06)
Sadly, I didnt bear witness to the power that is Valient Thor. I did catch a listen on Sunday afternoons Official Rock-n-Roll Radio Show on KKFI which solidified their spot on my must see next time list. Instead I made my way to Daveys for The Gaslights send off and so rightly ended the night in front of the rock-n-roll pulpit of one Reverend Tony Ladesich and crew that make up Pendergast. The rock-n-roll spectacle that ended the night is one of the history books. Theres simply nothing better than guest appearances by former band members and a bevy of musicians climbing on stage for an all-star ROCK-N-ROLL jam.the only kind of jam.
