14 In Dog Years
KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!
Happy Anniversary to us! This little email commenced two years ago April 7th over some yard beers at Harrys Country Club. We started with 25 in our litter and have grown to nearly 500. Thats a lot of birthing for two sassy girls. Wed like to thank our loyal readers, venues, and most of all the bands that tear it up week to week and keep us inspired. Cheers to you!

I have one Centro-Matic disc, their 2004 EP Flashes and Cables. And shame on me, because as much as I love this album, I should own every disc in their discography. This Denton, TX four-piece mixes a bit of Americana with a shot of indie-rock. They have been found on bills with Jay Bennett (Wilco) and Slobberbone. Will Johnsons lyrics are dreamy yet piercing and the music follows suit. For you Drive By Truckers fans, Patterson Hood (DBT guitarist and songwriter) sites Centro-Matic as his favorite band that is still vital and intact and their new release Fort Recovery his favorite Centro album, going so far as to call it a masterpieceand he claims he doesnt use that word often. He has me sold as I am dead set on purchasing my second Centro-Matic album and site this show as a reason to get out on a school night. -jaq

Hats off to KCs own neo-burlesque showgirl Emily Lauren, AKA Sugar Puppy and the Lovely Dumplings for making the cover of the Kansas City Star Preview. And another hats off to the Kansas City Star for recognizing this talented lady. The Sad Dog ladies are fans of Sugar Puppy and her many other astounding characters as we have had the enjoyment of catching her act(s) many times at the Donkey Shows. She never fails to leave you with a perma-grin and a little red in the face.

JAQS NOTES:
As we all well know, I recently spent another fabulous March weekend in throws of Austin, TX super fest SXSW. When presented with the overwhelming list of bands to choose from, my eyes immediately fell to the Brian Jonestown Massacre. Due to the recent success of the film DiG!, which documents the strange relationship between the Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Dandy Warhols, I decided to get to the show early as it was sure to be packed. The bar was packed and seemed to be the musicians choice drawing The Capes boys and Bobby Bare, Jr. As it turns out my early arrival proved to be a very good decision. As someone who is often running late, I tend to miss the opening act, even though I know in the opening slot can lie the greatest musical gems. This night being prompt paid off as my newest gem was onstage, the psychedelic pop band Hopewell. I told you, my musical tastes are going through a change. The music did not immediately blow me away as I sauntered through Bourbon Rocks
towards the bar, but it definitely caught my attention and kept it. I liked it enough that on my traditional trip to Austins Waterloo Records, I picked up a copy of their newest album Hopewell & The Birds of Appetite (Tee Pee Records), which has me hooked. The album was produced by David Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev) and undeniably has a Lips influence but still holds its own in originality. For me, the piece de resistance is the heavy groove, trumpet laced turn it up and sing out loud Calcutta. This tune is the most rockin on the album, filled with hooks and twists and has me playing it over and over and over. As with many first time sightings, I wish Id had a good taste of Hopewell & The Birds of Appetite before I saw I caught the live show. Someone bring these boys to KC!

DIS NOTES:
I love Netflix. The documentary New York Doll (2005) DVD released on Tuesday and it was waiting on my doorstep Wednesday. This is not your standard rock-n-roll historical biography. Theres a story here that continues throughout the documentary and a tender one at that. It covers the rise and near take over of a great rock-n-roll band, the New York Dolls that found its demise in drugs and alcohol. The real paradox comes in the telling of the films focus, bassist Arthur Killer Kane. Its something to see a man donning fishnets and lipstick living rock-n-roll debauchery then becoming a librarian at the L.A. Family History Library and a member
of the Mormon Church. Hes an endearing character that faced heartbreak, spiritual re-birth and fulfillment of his dream as he journeys to rejoin the Dolls for a reunion show at Morrisseys Meltdown in London, UK 2004. Director Greg Whiteley allows Kane to tell his own story supported by comments of musicians and friends. As tragic as his story becomes theres a real joy in watching someone who possesses such genuine honesty and candor. If you are a fan of the New York Dolls or simply love a good documentary go ahead and purchase this one for your collection. Now, Im off to watch the extras.
