Hank III w/ The Murder Junkies @ BEAUMONT CLUB
Hank IIIs recent double CD release Straight to Hell is one of my favs thus far in 2006. He dedicates the record in part to GG Allin explaining the reason The Murder Junkies might share this bill. The Murder Junkies were the last band to back notorious punk rock performer GG Allin before his death in 1993. Hank III is the youngest in the Hank Williams lineage to make his mark in music. Sometimes its a country set and sometimes its a full on rock show and if you are lucky, a combination of both. Its $16.50 on Ticketmaster.com before those lovely convenience charges. Be warned if you are going to this show. The last two shows I bought via Ticketmaster for a Beaumont show marked a show time later than the actual start time. Staff at the Beaumont blamed Ticketmaster and Ticketmaster blamed the venue. Dont be a Sad Dog - call for actual show time or get there early!!!! This has been a public service announcement. Back to the regular scheduled programming. di

On this night the group will consist of: Belly Dancers, Fire Breathers, Fire Spinners, Jugglers.
Nightlife Jones (Performance Artist): This has potential to be the most messed up thing ever attempted at a Donkey Show. This man says he will safety pin 100, $1 bills to his flesh then run into the audience and let them rip it off of them. He says its like getting attacked by a flock of chickens.

Sonic Youth @ LIBERTY HALL (Lawrence, KS)
Ive had a few show injuries in my time. Unfortunately, they are due to my lack of grace and forceful clumsiness and not as a result of my rock-n-roll fierceness. A fractured ankle was mine for the taking at a Sonic Youth show back in the early 90swatch that bottom step at Liberty Hall. Sonic Youth marks their 25th anniversary as a band this year. Its not the length of your tenure but how well you do it. Back then we called it underground music and Sonic Youth were kings. The paved their way and are now considered by some as royalty in the genre lineage that became indie and alternative. di

The Blasters @ KNUCKLEHEADS SALOON
This is the kind of music that makes a lass want to strap on some sexy shoes. They play that rock-a-billy sound that makes a girl feel like a girl and a boy behave like a man. They at times sway towards country and at times rock more 50s pop than straight out rock-a-billy but they belt out American music nonetheless. They have often captured the attention of the film industrys soundtrack creators making them a part of American cinema history as well. Swing it at this show!

IN STORES NOW:
Alejandro Escovedo The Boxing Mirror (2006, Back Porch Records)
A few weeks ago I purchased The Boxing Mirror
A. Because Alejandro put out a new album (his first studio album since 2001);
B. I have had the privilege of seeing him live over the past year with the extraordinary grouping of musicians who perform on the album; and
C. I had to lay to rest the whispers that the new album was not up to Alejandro par and that producer John Cale had overproduced the album. True to my nature I bought the disc, tore open the wrapper and immediately popped into the car stereo, confident that what I was about to hear what would far dispel the whispers. I am here to tell you that the disc has not left my side since first listen. Anyone who throws out the word overproduced in relation to this album obviously has not seen these songs performed live. I feel quite the opposite. I am amazed anyone could reign in the overpowering tower of sound that is created by two cellos, a violin, bass, drums, acoustic and electric guitar, keyboards, a stand up bass and an accordion, and corral it onto a disc. Live, the sound is mesmerizing, and recorded the songs still evoke the emotion of the live show. In true Alejandro style, he takes you on a journey through song from the driving garage rock sound of Sacramento & Polk to Evita
s Lullaby, a ballad of his mothers loss. Alejandros lyrics on The Boxing Mirror are his most personal to date and opens up a window that most people would not even dare look through. jaq

JAQS NOTES:
Recently Max (The Ever Happy Sad Dog) wanted to make a mix CD for his Aunt Laurens B-Day. I, of course, helped him a bit, because without the opposable thumb he had a difficult time typing in the track listing. Well, it turned out to be a rockin little mix of fine-tunes and has earned its place as our summer compilation. Max was so proud of himself he wanted to share it with you. Beware pups; these songs might inspire fits of boisterous car singing or sporadic office dancing.

DIS NOTES:
Something happened a couple weeks ago and Id be remiss if I didnt put down a little memorial in words. KKFIs Official Rock-n-Roll Radio Show came to an end. It was a little hour-long radio show on Sunday afternoons that packed a powerhouse of great music. It was one thing I looked forward to weekly. At times the on-air banter got a little chatty but even more it was loaded with great local music and featured tunes by bands coming through town and some just all around great rock-n-roll. Not to mention the telephone interviews and in-studio performances. Kansas City culture took one step backwards by losing this show and Im truly a Sad Dog because of it. Thanks to Gary Cloud for keeping it alive so long. Cody Wyoming, Bill Roach Sundahl, Slimm, Jon Stubblefield, and ours truly Jauqui, were some great additions when they entered the studio to spin some tunes and talk about local music. Robert Moore, your job just got a little bit harder! Robert hosts another great local fr
ee-form radio show on KCUR (89.3FM) Saturdays 2-4pm called Sonic Spectrum. He often includes KC bands in his Playlist and is a man of impeccable taste in music. Tune in.
