RELEASES:
Jon Dee Graham Full (2006, Freedom Records)
Last Friday night I had the privilege of getting up close and personal for another stellar Jon Dee performance at Daveys Uptown. Back with a trio that consisted of John Chipman (drums) and Andrew Duplantis (bass and vocals), they let loose a set that was heavy on songs off of the new release Full. I was running late (shame on me) and entered the bar two songs into the set, just in time for the tune Something Wonderful. In a matter of seconds I was transported somewhere far from my hectic day. Jon Dee moved from rippin guitar solos to beautiful ballads that brought a tear to the eye and a lump in the throat. The mix of musicians onstage was the perfect recipe of raw talent and friendship that made for perfect timing, some hilarious banter and off the cuff storytelling. Jon Dee introduced Duplantis mentioning that he has played with Alejandro Escovedo, The Meat Puppets and currently Son Volt, jokingly jibbing that he must have hit a dry spell but retorting with a heartfelt he
is back where he belongs. I would have to agree, as the trio was a well-oiled and fine-tuned vehicle, comfortable and familiar yet refreshing and full of surprises. Jon Dees songwriting is real and raw and tells the tales the beautiful side of livin as well as the side that aint so pretty. Full is no exception offering up songs that inspire you drive 80mph in a 40, to songs that command you to slow way down and revel in the words. The musicians on the album are the cream of the Austin crop including Jon Dee Graham, Andrew Duplantis, John Chipman, Mike Hardwick, Bruce Hughes, Scrappy Jud Newcomb and Mike Stewart. JAQS NOTES:
Raconteurs Broken Boy Soldiers (2006, V2 Records)
I find commercial radio seriously annoying, well, because I find radio commercials seriously annoying. For this reason I vehemently veer away from turning the radio dial and rely on KKFI, KCUR, I-tunes and CDs as outlets to acquire my music. And for this reason, and the fact that I dont have cable television, I had not heard of the big Raconteurs single Steady, As She Goes. Actually, I hadnt even heard of the Raconteurs until I happened upon while perusing through a Borders in Chicago. There at the counter was the disc with Jack Whites bloody face on the front. Immediately I picked it up and threw it in the cart, because I am a fan, it seems, of the Jack White thang! I was happy being a fan of the Meg and Jack duo, The White Stripes, but then he went and joined up with Loretta Lynn, producing one of my favorite albums of 2004, 5-time Grammy Nominated Van Leer Rose. Now, here it is, Meg has been temporarily kicked to the curb, Loretta is sitting at home polishing her Grammy an
d Jack has a new posse consisting of Brendan Benson, Jack Lawrence (Greenhorns) and Patrick Keeler (Greenhorns). So I threw Broken Boy Soldier into the old disc player and immediately began to question my desire for instant gratification, which lead to my hasty purchase. The saccharine radio pop sound of Steady left a sour taste in my mouth, and, well, it still does. But as easily as I rejected the song, I took command, held steady, moved to the seemingly Zeppelin inspired Broken Boy Soldier, and after that, it was smooth sailing. The album is fat with funk and groove, reeling harmonies and a couple tender little ballads in Together, one of my favorite tunes on the album, and Call It a Day. Where I was initially beginning to mistrust my musical instinct, I am now comfortable with my purchase, make a point to skip track one, and to be honest track two as well, and just roll with the highly enjoyable last eight tracks on the album.

Tune in next week to hear why I disagree with anyone who has expressed disappointment in the new Alejandro release, and, to explain what brought me to purchase the new Dixie Chicks album and why I have added it to my box of items to be re-gifted.

DIS NOTES:
Sorry pups, I have to be brief again this week as the keyboard is soon to be packed up as I finish this moving process tomorrow. First thing on my unpacking to-do list is to track down my CDs and pull out some of my summer favorites. No doubt that stack will include some Lauryn Hill, Old 97s, Thin Lizzy, The Thrills, a little Latin music and a little surf. But, I could use a good healthy fresh influx of good summer listenin. Anyone have some suggestions?
