Golden Hearted Whores and Morning 40 Federation @ FRED P. OTTS
The Whores have been somewhat rare lately but heres your 2nd chance this weekend to catch these rock-n-roll bad boys in action.
A friend recently tried to describe Morning 40 Federation to me. He described this New Orleans group like this, a bizarre mix of Dixieland, rock, soul, and jazz stirred up with a WHOLE bunch of booze. Kinda like Tom Waits meets Fishbone, meets Dr. John, and thats not really very accurate. Basicallyhard to describe. They used to play in KC pretty frequently and built a healthy fan base. But its been awhile. Hmmmmight have to try and catch this one after Slaid Cleaves of course. di

Slaid Cleaves @ KNUCKLEHEADS SALOON
A few years back, on a road trip, I was heading into the KC area and caught a story on NPR about Slaid. This was my first introduction and it was love at first listen. If you visit his website the first words to catch your eye say Slaid Cleaves. Grew up in Maine. Lives in Texas. Writes songs. Makes records. Tries to be good. That pretty much sums it up. This singer-songwriter definitely has that country edge but it must be that northern upbringing that doesnt let his music venture to far into the woods. He seems to enjoy both sides of the Mason Dixon line as he can sing about eatin fresh Maine lobster and swimmin in Barton Springs (Austin, TX) in the same song. Ive seen him perform live only once when he experienced sound malfunctions leaving him without a microphone. Without a step he moved to the front of the stage, asked everyone to quiet down, and belted it out, truly unplugged. Slaid is the real deal and I cant think of a better venue than outside at Knuckleheads to see
him perform. Thanks Frank! The ladies of Sad Dog have tickets in hand and are counting the minutes till show time. -jaq

George Jones @ THE MISSOURI STATE FAIR (Sedalia, MO)
I have to thank Lynn G and her, always informative, KC Rockabilly E-Newsletter for giving me the heads up on this one. When I was a kid my dad would take me to the MO State Fair every year. We ate too many corn dogs, rode too many rides and watched many a car race...it was always a blast and would definitely be worth the drive to catch country legend George Jones. If you find yourself free and itchin for a weekday road trip get yourself to Sedalia. -jaq

Split Lip Rayfield w/ Drakkar Sauna @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
$15 DOS / $12 Advance; 8:30pm; 21+
We couldnt believe it when we heard it. Split Lip Rayfield would be coming to Daveys. As you know Split Lip Rayfields guitarist Kirk Rundstrom has been battling esophageal cancer for the past six months or so. That chemo is some mean stuff and often times taking a greater toll on the body than the illness it fights. But, Kirk has been feeling well, exercising, practicing with the boys and wanted to get back up on the stagerightfully so, its where he belongs. Theres not a better way to spend your money this week. You will get one hell of a show. Often hailed as bluegrass, that never quite sits well with me. Sure they play traditional bluegrass instruments but the essence of their punk and metal backgrounds has a mighty clutch on their sound. And as a bonus, Wayne Gottstine (Mandolin), long time Split Lip member who parted ways with the band last year, is slated to join Kirk, Jeff and Eric at a few of their scheduled shows.
You can also purchase CDs from Kirks other band Grain & Demise online at www.grainanddemise.com. All money from Grain and Demise CD sales assist with Kirks medical bills and help to support his family including two young girls. -di

HEADS UP:
Alejandro Escovedo Orchestra @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
Friday, August 18th 10pm; $20.00
Time for another big heads up as one of SAD DOGs all time favs makes his way to the Daveys stage next weekend, Friday August 18th. Get your tickets now as his shows often sell out. Alejandro was named artist of the decade in 1999 by No Depression Magazine, last month he shared the cover of No Depression with Jon Dee Graham also coming to Daveys on August 26th. Al recently battled a near fatal bout with Hepatitis C but hes back as we knew he would be. He is a great artist and composer without parallel, and has shared the stage with artists such as Los Lobos, Wilco, Calexico, and John Cale who produced his latest release The Boxing Mirror (May 2006, Back Porch Records). This time through hes bringing his orchestra. Als previous bands include The True Believers, Buick MacKain, Rank and File, and The Nuns. This one is not to be missed!

JAQS NOTES:
ALERT LUCERO FANS!
Being a loyal Lucero fan, I subscribed to their email list so that I can keep up with the boys and whats up in Lucero news. This week I was hit with a bonus update. Their new album Rebels, Rogues & Swords is scheduled for release September 26th. Being the kind souls they are, and apparently backed by someone who knows a bit about promotion, they sent out a notice for pre-ordering. By heading to their website you can pre-order the album and the CD will be shipped to you one week prior to the release date; for an additional fee you can get their new limited edition Rebels, Rogues & Swords t-shirt and an exclusive 3 pin set (I am a sucker for band merch); and, this is the kicker, an immediate digital download of the album sent to you within 2-4 days of your order! Today I received an email with a link to download the album saying, this is being sent to you because you were kind enough to purchase the physical CD from Luceros web store. They also kindly ask that I limit this t
o my personal use. And being that they were kind enough to share this advance download for my listening pleasure, I feel I must oblige them. I would like to share my thought on this new release with you all, and will in the very near future, but I am currently in the process of the download and need to spend some quality time with the tunes before I can share my thoughts. What can share is that Lucero knows what I like and keeps shellin out their dirty country punk influenced rock. There hasnt been a Lucero album that didnt immediately rule the CD player or a Ben Nichols lyric that didnt have me singing along in high volume. For now you can visit www.luceromusic.com to preview 4 tracks from the new album or make a purchase and get the download yourself. And the best news of all, with a new album comes a new tour and new dates for November and December will soon be announced. You can also visit http://www.airamerica.com/maddow/ for an archive interview and acoustic song perfor
mance from the Rachel Maddow Show, August 4 at Air America Studios. Enjoy!
DIS NOTES:
Short and sweet this week. Im getting out of this heat and hitting the movies tonight. I need to get my scare on and it looks like The Descent is just the ticket. On my trip to Chicago last weekend I picked up a fun read in Chuck Klostermans Killing Yourself to Live: 85% A True Story. Its an expansion on an article he wrote for Spin Magazine about his cross-country journey to visit America's most famous rock-n-roll death sites. Ive been a long time fan of this rock journalist first in his book Fargo Rock City: A Heavy Metal Odyssey in Rural North Dakota, and then by the hugely entertaining Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs: A Low Culture Manifesto. It is sometimes eerie how closely his perspective on culture and his taste match mine but its exactly that that makes him such a fun read for me. Hes a regular contributor to Spin Magazine and its often those pages I turn to first. His first stop in Killing Yourself is to the Chelsea Hotel where he meets a frustrated G.M. who in
sists that his hotel not be aligned with the death of Nancy Spungen. It was after all, her boyfriend, Sid Vicious that was the accused. Thats about as far as Ive gotten in his journey because he spends the first chapter discussing how to choose music for a road trip (he ends up packing 600 CDs) and pondering his relationships with two women and admits theres even a third who well meet later in the bookit is a true road trip book. It doesnt just capture the highlights but gives you the dirty stuff tothose things that you think about on the open road on the way to the next pit stop.
THANK YOU to Jason Harper (Music Editor, The Pitch) for unknowingly providing us with our subject line this week. Good luck with the big show tomorrow night!
