FRIDAY, AUGUST 4
The Hearers and Drakkar Sauna @ RECORD BAR
2 Shows! 7pm all ages, 10pm 21+
Just off of their west coast tour we are pleased to find this group of nine multi-talented musicians all in the same town. With the boys now scattered from KC to California, it is a rare treat to catch a Hearers show these days. Incorporating acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin, harmonica, pedal steel, organ, glockenspiel, cello, banjo, drums and synthesizer their sound ranges from the softest country/folk infused ballads to a much heavier indie rock, yet always surprising us with their eclectic and experimental side roads. Mark Tweed and Darrin Welch trade off lead vocals and harmonies complimenting each other, Tweed with a deep dark vocal quality while Welch provides a much lighter Americana edge. Drawing comparisons to The Hearers is a difficult task as they have truly carved out a musical niche all their own.
They released their second full-length album in 2005 on Anodyne Records, Dont Make the Captain Cry which I have dedicated some time over the last week. What began as a goal to spend time with this album became a love affair, as I now need a little fix to get me through the day. Recorded and mixed by Hearers member David Moore, this second release turned out to be one beautiful piece of work and should be a fixture in any music lovers collection. I cant wait to see you tomorrow!!! -jaq

Last Call Girls, The Von Hodads and Bloodshot Bill @ THE BRICK
Bloodshot Bill was just added to the bill this week! What a treat for those of you that cant make it to his show at this weeks Boozeday Tuesday. This one man attack only comes through about once a year and hes not to be missed. The bill was already a healthy one with alt.country darlings the Last Call Girls serving up their best from the female perspective and western surf outfit The Von Hodads but with Bloodshot Bill added to the mix its our pick for Saturday night.

The Lucky Graves and Two Girls @ RECORD BAR
The Lucky Graves CD Release Show!
A few weeks ago I caught The Lucky Graves at the Donkey Show and they rocked my socks off! Another KC gem! This is what I had to say, They describe their music as indie, rock and blues but its much more than that. There are definitely songs that ride heavy on the indie tracks, but they also have a smooth pop n soulful sexy sound as well. As most of you know by now, I love the sexy side of rock! Head to their Myspace page and decide for yourself!
Two Girls hail form Peoria, IL and flaunt the soul, blues and psychedelic side of life.

Reverend Horton Heat @ VOODOO (Harrahs Casino)
Possibly the hardest working band in rock-n-roll. Rev and the boys have been touring the medium to large sized club circuit for well over a decade always bringing a high energy show with some country seasoned punkabilly. One of the very wonderful things about Reverend Horton Heat is they always have some killer bands touring with them but this time they have local rockabilly favs The Silvermen on board.

Needmore Discs presents:
Boozeday Tuesday Matinee @ MIKES TAVERN
Featuring: Bloodshot Bill and Lurlene The Trailer Court Queen
Hailing from Montreal, Quebec Bloodshot Bill might as well call the road his home. This one man outfit gets around. I suppose wed call him rock-a-billy but he has the essence of an uncaged animal as he unleashes some amazing sounds. This show is one not to miss.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 10
Doris Henson and Cataract Camp @ THE BRICK
Doris Henson is one KC band not to be missed in my book. It seems I am not alone as they are nominated for the Pitch Music Awards categories Best Live Act, Best Male Vocalist (Matt Dunehoo) and Best Rock/Pop Act. And, if there a category existed for Best Album (why isnt there a Best Album category?), their 2005 release Give Me All Your Money would hold a solid seat.
Cataract Camp hails from Charlottesville, VA and hits KC with their mix of Shoegazing, Latin and Ska. Ok, I had to look up Shoegazing as well. Heres what I pulled from Wikipedia. Shoegazing is characterized by a self-deprecating, introspective, non-confrontational feel. Generally employed are distortion and the fuzzbox, droning riffs and a Phil Spector-esque wall of sound from the noisy guitars. Shoegazers vocals are typically subdued in volume and tone. The Velvet Underground, The Jesus and Mary Chain and the Cocteau Twins have been cited as genre influences. There you go pups, your lesson for today is over. Lets break for recess!! -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
Pups, I am off to practice what I preach and catch as many bands as possible at the Pitch Music Awards Showcase. Once again, CONGRATULATIONS to all of our Sad Dog friends who were nominated. Dont Forget to Vote!! Tonight is the last night, so head to Westport for the Showcase or vote online at www.pitch.com/musicawards/2006.
DIS NOTES:
Last night I headed to Daveys Uptown to take in the semi-regular Wednesday night gig dubbed The Living Room. If you have friends that are musicians youve likely found yourself in a living room late at night when acoustic instruments are picked up and singing ensues. Fashioned after such evenings The Living Room at Daveys Uptown gives local songwriters a low key opportunity to play old favorites and new songs in a public forum. This week Tony Ladesich (Pendergast), Gene Smith, Jon Stubblefield (Bad Ideas, The Gaslights) and Chad Rex traded off spots on the small stage at Daveys. Check it out for a great night of entertainment by some of KCs best. There will be a varying cast of characters each week and if you have some songs to share Im sure these generous folks will clear the way to the stage.
