FRIDAY, AUGUST 25
The Gaslights w/ Matt Grimm & The Red Smear @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
Yep, they hit a moose. Weve seen the photos to prove it. Earlier this month The Gaslights were on their way home from a tour to the West when they hit a moose in Montana, killing it and their van. Ms. Abigail kept that big ole boat of a van on the road and The Gaslights made it home, a bit shaken, in a different van, but in one piece. Heres hoping they make it to the Daveys stage from their respective homes avoiding large mammals.

Overstep and Giants Chair @ RECORD BAR
Tonight is a reunion of sorts for KCs Overstep. Loaded with talent, the band is made up of veteran KC musicians Adam Stotts (Lucky Graves / Golden Hearted Whores), Ben Ruth (Lucky Graves / Golden Hearted Whores / Grand Marquis), Duane Trower (Doris Henson / Season to Risk) and Alex Organ (Sirhan Sirhan). In the eyes of the boys of Overstep they never really broke up. However, Alex Organ moved to CA back in 2003, which has obviously limited their ability to play live. Organ, who was recently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, has refused to call it quits and has been undergoing treatment allowing him to steady his hands and pick up the sticks again. With Organ back in KC for a visit, Overstep is taking the opportunity tonight to shell out a much overdue reunion show. Prior to their hiatus, Overstep put out two full-length albums on Anodyne Records Do You Copy? and The Bullring By the Sea, showcasing their hard edge indie rock sound. Prior to Organs departure Overstep recorde
d seven new songs, which will be available on disc at the show.

This Austin singer / songwriter, badass guitarist, gravel throated storyteller tells his hard livin tales with beauty, a good a dose of humor and some heavy hittin rock! A consummate musician and always noted as a Sad Dog fav, we are lucky to have him back in KC so soon after his last visit. Although Jon Dees band members tend to change, we expect he will be back with seasoned Austin musicians John Chipman on drums and Andrew Duplantis on bass.
Chipman can be found sharing the stage with Jon Dee in another Austin band to be given notice, The Resentments. Duplantis has played with Alejandro Escovedo and The Meat Puppets. TUESDAY, AUGUST 29
ODeath, Skeleton Breath, Mark Smeltzer and Amy Farrand @ RECORD BAR
We spend a great deal of time here at Sad Dog HQ perusing MySpace pages getting to know bands that are coming through town. Every once in a while I come across one that I totally dig, add to my Favorites, cant wait to see and make a point to add em to my cd collection. Such is the case with gothic, gypsy punks ODeath. The closest reference I can make to them is the Chickasaw Mud Puppies, albeit ODeath is a tad darker , but the Mud Puppies havent been around for awhile so that probably does you no good. At the very least pay a visit to their MySpace for a listenand then well see you at the show.

CINEMA:
Leonard Cohen: Im Your Man @ TIVOLI THEATER
Songwriter. Poet. Counter-Culture Icon. Consummate Ladies Man
I was first introduced to Leonard Cohen in 1994 when his songs were featured in the film Natural Born Killers. From that point on I was hooked. This film tells the life story of this poet / singer / songwriter who writes hauntingly beautiful songs delivering them with dark confidence and spirituality. He has influenced many a musical icon from Judy Collins to Bono. I stumbled upon a live interview with Collins at SXSW this year where she told the story of how she became a fan of his music in the late 60s, recorded Suzanne and Dress Rehearsal and actually convinced Cohen to record his own music. Bless you Judy. The film includes interviews and performances by Bono, Martha Wainwright, U2, Linda Thompson, Leonard Cohen himself and many more. -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
2nd Annual Crossroads Music Festival
Presented by Time Warner and Spice of Life Productions, this homegrown festival is the brainchild of Bill Roach Sundahl, founder of KCs own variety show The Donkey Show and avid supporter of local music. Celebrating all that is Kansas City, Crossroads Music Festival (CMF2) will take place September 9, 2006 from 3p.m. to Midnight at Grinders Sculpture Park, 18th and Locust. Set in the heart of the Crossroads District, Downtown Kansas City, CMF2 is a family affair offering live music by 13 local bands on 2 stages, kids games, local vendors, food and beverage and much more. Bands who have joined the CMF2 family this year include The Wilders, Roman Numerals, The Gaslights, The Architects, Doris Henson , Its Over, The Von Hodads, Down Trunks, Wylde Chipmonks and the Cuddly Poos, Mr. Marcos V7, Zee Grass, Emma Feel and The Silvermen. Musical genres include rock, new wave, Americana, bluegrass, rockabilly, pop, surf rock and more. There is fun for kids of all ages as you are never too
old or too young to rock! Tickets are available through the Central Ticket Office by calling 816-235-6222, online at www.spiceoflifeproductions.com and at Grinders, Birdies, Lillibelle and Needmore Discs. Tickets are $9 online, $10 at all other advance outlets and $13 Day of Show. Children under 12 get in free. Free parking is available between 17th and 18th streets on Oak and chairs and blankets are allowed.
I think the best testimonial from the 2005 Crossroads Festival was from my 3 year old nephew who had the opportunity to go to the circus before he hit the fest. After rockin out to Pendergast and Its Over the tired little guy made one statement before dozing off in the car, This was more fun than the circus. CMF2 packs a ton of bang for the buck and is the perfect opportunity to have a fantastic Saturday while supporting live music!
You will hear more about this Sad Dog supported event in weeks leading up to the big show. Get your tickets now because this is one KC event not to be missed.

DIS NOTES:
Im not sure what my problem is with Jack White. Its a relationship Im still trying to come to terms with. The commercial radio darlings that they were, the White Stripes, are a band I avoided for a long time. Then Jack hooked up with Loretta Lynn producing one of my favorite records of 2004 Van Lear Rose. Much prodding from friends and Jaqs review of The Raconteurs Broken Boy Soldiers (Sad Dog June 2, 2006) prompted me to pick it up last week at Needmore Discs. My relationship with Jack is moving along quite nicely at this point and I too recommend it for a listen. This is just one of the great discs I picked up at Needmore Discs last week what a killer record store. I was a long time fan of Recycled Sounds but with its demise I will be finding my way to Needmore Discs often. The past few months, what I havent been able to pick up at shows, Ive ordered online, downloaded, and yes, burned discs <shoot me now>, and its just not the same. This dog is finally out of her mi
sery. There is something to be said for flipping through those bins of CDs, some used, some new. You just gotta hear something playing over the speakers while youre shopping music. The bargain prices (significantly lower than other area stores), friendly staff and the chatter of fellow shoppers is something Ive missed. Major kudos for having a face-out rack fully filled with local area musicians and bands. Other gems this trip include P.W. Long Remembered, Michael Penn Resigned, Robyn Hitchcock Eye and Neko Case Fox Confessor Brings The Flood.
Needmore Discs also sponsors the weekly Boozeday Tuesday at Mikes Tavern reason alone to give them patronage.
