SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 23
Junior Brown, Webb Wilder, and The Silvermen @ KNUCKLEHEADS
8pm; $25 adv / $30 dos
Junior Brown, the man who plays his own invention, the guit-steel, an instrument including both guitar and steel guitar necks. While a master in country style guitar his shows often include a healthy dose of surf and blues never to be outdone by his baritone croon. He has also been nominated for multiple Grammies, including "Best Album," "Best Song" and "Best Male Vocal." The Village Voice went so far as to compare him to Jimi Hendrix, saying, "His Hendrix fixation, it's now obvious, is not a slacker grabbing gimmick, but an honorable exploration of the highways and byways Jimi opened, and a journey moreover, where in Junior's loose-as-a-goose wristing, combined with his guit-steel's unique and extraordinary range, actually elevates him into the class of musical humans going where no man, Hendrix not excepted, has gone before."

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 24
Supernauts and Its Over @ FRED P. OTTS
Its a hot ticket tonight at P. Otts. Its Over is one of the best bands happening right now in Kansas City proven by their performance last week at the Crossroads Music Festival when the crowd demanded an encore. Their high energy rock-pop sound is intoxicating. Ive yet to catch Supernauts but they have one of the best descriptions of their sound on their Myspace page so we just had to repost it here, T-Rex and The Replacements going out for a drink and getting into a bar brawl with AC/DC, Rainbow, and Spirit over whether or not The Beatles are the greatest band ever. -di

FILM:
Out on DVD this week is the remarkable documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston, a portrait of a commercially unrecognized singer/songwriter, visual artist and amateur film maker and his struggle with manic depression. The film is the winner of two awards at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and receiving endless rave reviews. While never receiving commercial success Johnstons songs have been recorded and/or performed by over150 artists including Tom Waits, Pearl Jam, Beck, Wilco, Yo La Tengo, Teenage Fanclub, Mercury Rev and the Flaming Lips. It was Yo La Tengos performance of Speeding Motorcycle on 1990s Fakebook that I first was introduced to Johnstons songwriting. Johnston is an endearing character but despite the subject matter this documentary is put together in such a way that makes it incredibly interesting to watch and one that can only be created by a filmmaker who truly loves his subject. The Devil and Daniel Johnston now sits on my list of best in documentari
