Goodnight Daylight, Middle Picker and This Alibi @ MIKES TAVERN
Well, well, well boys, its about time we heard from you again. Here at Sad Dog HQ we are happy to see that Goodnight Daylight is out of hiding and back on the stage with some new gems to boot. Unfortunately, and although publicized as such, this eve is not a CD release as GD is still polishing the new album, slated for release in a couple of months. Heres what the boys have to say about their return:
If you thought Goodnight Daylight had disappeared into oblivion of local KC band history, then you are sorely mistaken. The truth is, a week hasn't gone by that we haven't been practicing, recording or drinking. So come out this Friday night to Mike's Tavern in KCMO for your first chance to see GD show off its wares in nearly 8 months. We'll be debuting some new material, and trying to remember how our old stuff goes. Either way, we guarantee that we'll rock your ass off.

Shooter Jennings @ KEMPER ARENA
Son of outlaw and legend Waylon Jennings, it would be a sad situation if it turned out this country son had no talent. Well, Shooter is out on his Electric Rodeo tour and proving that in his case talent doesnt skip a generation. I have not seen Shooter live, but have been given the two thumbs up from everyone I know who has gotten a taste of the live Shooter. As far as Shooters recordings, I have never fully embraced his 2005 freshman release Put The O Back In Country. However, I certainly made up for my fear of commitment with his 2006 release Electric Rodeo as I dont let it stray far from my side. Where as O is straight in the pocket country, Electric Rodeo shoots from the hip at first song and title track. With this sophomore release, Shooter holds onto his country core but adds some down and dirty with a dose of sweet Southern Rock. I have plans this Friday eve, and its not with Shooter, but you can be sure Electric Rodeo will be spinnin in the ol disc player. -

98.9s Freakers Ball @ Community America Ballpark
Thats right pups, Motorhead plays KC! If you dont know Motorhead well then get yourselves an education. Theyve being doing their full-on rock assault since 1975, have no less than three tribute bands in their honor and their wonder-song Ace of Spades has possibly been covered more times than cover song standard Mustang Sally.okay thats pushing it. They are badass and this is their only date in the U.S. on this tour. How that happened we arent rightly sure but wed like to meet the person that pulled those strings. If youve never been to a Freakers Ball, hold tight, theres no other possible name for such an event.
The evening includes a $1K costume contest so bring your best.

Steve Poltz and Billy Harvey @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
8:30 pm; $10 adv / $12 dos
Billy Harvey produced Steve Poltz's Chinese Vacation as well as Bob Schneider's I'm Good Now. Hes also a member of Bob Schneiders band.
In the headlining position is Steve Poltz. What do you need to know about Steve Poltz? Lets start off with a bit of highlights taken from his bio. He trick-or-treated at Liberaces house, planned a two-day stay in Amsterdam that ended a month later with him escaping the city under the cover of darkness, and was Bob Hopes favorite altar boy. Alone, these anecdotes go well with a fistful of peanuts at a cocktail party. But on top of these add that this person also co-wrote the longest-running song on the Billboard Top 100, had a debut solo album that earned three and a half stars in Rolling Stone, and was awarded the title of San Diegos Most Influential Artist of the Decade at the San Diego Music Awards. What you end up with is one of the most engaging, twisted, and prolific songwriters of our time. What does that really mean? Hes a man of wit and charm that commands an audience and likely does so in what ever environment his being lands him in. He could also turn a song lik
e Amazing Grace into something amusing. He also put out one of my favorite CDs on the fly. Yep, last time I saw him he recorded the show and had a 4-cd live recording of the nights show available for sale immediately following the show, and was available to personally sign each one with an original drawing. Steve only makes it through KC about every 18 months. Last time through he brought his pal Stinky on a bucket drum and Im still not sure who was more amusing. Must not miss show of the week for fans of the singer/songwriter genre. -di

Original Sinners, 7 Shot Screamers and Last Call Girls @ RECORD BAR
Whoa Nelly, Wednesday marks the night of dilemmas as the Sad Dog ladies have been waiting for quite some time to see our beloved Steve Poltz head back to town. But can we be so bold as to miss L.A. punk goddess, member of legendary late 70s early 80s punk group X, member of electrified county folk ensemble The Knittersthe fabulous Excene Cervenka and, her Original Sinners? With two albums under their belt, the 2002 self-titled Original Sinners and the 2005 sophomore release Sev7en, Exene is still rockin out with her own unique punk flair leading a band that cant help but smack of the X we know and love. I choose to believe that all can be accomplished this eve. For those of you who join us in the throws of live musical chairs, the Billy Harvey / Steve Poltz show starts at 8:30 p.m. and the Record Bar is open until 1:30 a.m. If you see a flash go by this Wednesday eve and you end up with a clump of fur in your face, you can be sure its the Sad Dog ladies chasin
their tails to catch all the night has to offer.

Pendergast w/ The Down Trunks and Great Dane @ THE HURRICANE
The Rock Gods have answered and saved The Hurricane from its fateful future posing as a Plaza Bar. The owners of Jerrys Bait Shop have taken ownership and plan to bring back The Hurricane of yesteryear. It officially re-opens on Halloween Night but KCs Pendergast and The Down Trunks will be breaking it in. Lots going on tonight but if The Hurricane produces in old tradition, the rock will ring into late hours.

NEW RELEASES:
Lucinda Williams Car Wheels On A Gravel Road Deluxe Edition (2006,Lost Highway Records)
I was first introduced to Lucinda in 1998 with the release of Car Wheels On A Gravel Road. At first listen I was hooked and immediately dove into her catalogue, wondering how the hell I had missed out on her music up to this point. Some dear friends of mine and I spent many a night, drunk on wine, singing the songs off of Car Wheels at full volume. Greenville and Drunken Angel seemed to be our favorites to cover. What we lacked in vocal ability at 2:00 in the morning we more than made up in conviction. Lucinda is a woman who writes without fear of what others might think. She wears her emotions on her sleeve and it always shows through her lyrics, as well as her vocals, which arent traditionally beautiful but filled with a level of passion that drives right to the heart. She draws on country, blues and folk styles often citing Howlin Wolf and Townes Van Zandt as influences. She has a knack for surrounding herself with talent and Car Wheels was no exception. Players on this
album include Gurf Morlix (guitar), Steve Earle (guitar), Charlie Sexton (guitar and vocals) and Bo Ramsey (guitar). This combination of players, and of course some amazing songwriting on Lucindas part, garnered her a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
Now, Lost Highway Records has put together this Deluxe Edition including:
A newly remastered version of Car Wheels and two previously unreleased tracks
Alternate and previously unissued versions of select tunes
Previously unreleased 1998 full concert performance WXPN Live at the World Caf
Featuring guest performances by Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris and Charlie Sexton
And much more
Car Wheels on a Gravel Road is an album that should have a home in all CD collections. And for this selection, I suggest a nice cabernet. -jaq

OTHER NEWS:
HELP MARCIA BALL AND THE TIPITINAS FOUNDATION PROVIDE INSTRUMENTS TO NEW ORLEANS STUDENTS
(The following was taken from an email from Waterloo Records (Austin, TX)
Last week we received an e-mail from Austin musician Marcia Ball regarding helping schools and students in New Orleans replace instruments lost in last years catastrophic flooding, especially Douglas High, in the 9th Ward across the street from Charmaine Neville's house. You can help by donating money or instruments. From Marcia's email:
The most direct line to donate instruments or money, and get it to the schools or musician,s is through the Tipitina's Foundation http://www.tipitinasfoundation.org/.
In their own words: "This last year we have been replacing instruments for local schools' band programs and local musicians we gave out instruments to over a dozen local school band programs and have replaced hundreds of local professionals' instruments and gear since December 2005."
The Instruments A Comin' program is at: http://www.tipitinasfoundation.org/programs/iac/. If you want to make a donation and earmark it specifically for Charmaine's school, indicate so. You can send instruments and donations directly to Instruments A Comin' at:
Tipitina's Music Office, 501 Napoleon Avenue,New Orleans, LA 70115 or write to the director of the program btaylor@tipitinas.com.
If you are in the Austin area and have instruments or contributions, write to us at instruments@marciaball.com. We'd love to take a trailer load when we go to New Orleans in December. If you're somewhere else and have a good instrument, doesn't have to be new, write to us. We'll figure out how to get it to N.O. Any questions, please write. Do we need to pick up a tuba? Okay. Thank you so much. Please pass this on.
-Marcia
DIS NOTES:
Many nights as I write Sad Dog Ill fill up the CD changer with bands on the weeks line-up for a bit of influence. Joy. This week is a bit different and the house sits silent besides the occasional visit to MySpace pages. Yesterday I discovered that Sad Dog HQ (Di Annex) had been burglarized. Violated. After spending a few hours trying to hunt down one missing feline Lefty, I came back inside to survey the damage. Ive discovered that material possessions are not all that important to me except when in the form of CDs holding some of my favorite sounds. Nope, I dont have an IPod so theres likely some gems missing for good. I havent yet brought myself to closely guess-inventory what is gone but theres 180 friends missing from my CD collection for the time being. Bastards. I imagine as the weeks and months go by Ill discover specifically whats gone when I want to hear it. Bitter. Did the thieves have discerning tastes?well see what remains in the days to come. Curious.
Lesson: inventory your collection and appreciate your friends. Ive got some dandies who have helped me clean, launder my drawers all touched and tossed, called with kind words, offered to make repairs, and kept me company and even some who have offered to help me regain some of those lost sounds. You guys all rock and you know who you are. Lucky.
JAQS NOTES:
I have a few ever-changing rules when it comes to burning CDs. At a live show (in particular a club show), dont let your friend buy the disc and then you burn it later. If you dig the band, you both must make the purchase that night as every disc sold puts gas in the van and gets the band to the next gig. Although deep down it really isnt right, you can get away with burning a disc by any band whose members are already millionaires and are charging $100 to $400 for a ticket to the concert. If you are someone who writes about live music, you can let a friend burn a CD for you so that you might promote this band on your e-newsletter, but only on the condition that you intend to make a purchase the next time you are at Needmore Discs. Finally, if you or a friend has purchased a CD, and it is lost or STOLEN, it is fair game to burn that disc so that your friend may continue to enjoy the sweet sounds. So, Di, I am here for you as your journey into the land of the lost discs begins.
