Visit www.presentmagazine.com to check out Issue 13, October 2006, for a recap of this Kansas City fun for the family event, which featured 13 local and regional bands, local vendors and celebrated the vitality of KC. Like Bill Sundahl and Spice of Life Productions Crossroads Music Festival, Present Magazine has the KC music and art community in its heart. You will also find a link to Time Warner Cables KC On Demand video clip of the fest as well as a slew of great photos by clicking on Present_CrossroadsMusicFest.pdf. So stop into the Record Bar this eve and celebrate Present Mags one-year anniversary with Robert Moore, of KCURs eclectic Saturday music program Sonic Spectrum, White Dwarves from OK City; the modern cabaret of Alacartoona and one of the most high-energy fun lovin bands in KC, Its Over, shellin out their 50s and 60s mid-east tinged rock and r

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21
Andre Williams & the Diplomats of Solid Sound and The Afterparty @ RECORD BAR
Andre Williams has quite a story. He is a songwriter and composer, was a staff producer and A&R man for Barry Gordy at Motown, produced material for Stevie Wonder, Ike & Tina Turner and George Clintons Funkadelic and eventually hit rock bottom with a crack addiction. He pulled himself up and came back around to record what has been deemed his sleeze rock masterpiece, Silky , as well as tour with the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, even garnering the executive producer credit on their 1998 release Acme. You can visit www.intherecords.com/pages/andre.html for an extended bio. Andres music is most fittingly described as raunchy R&B and soul and he holds the titles of R&B legend and The Black Godfather. In 1999 Andre joined forces with The Sadies (spaghetti western-surf-garage-punk) and Bloodshot records to put out the album Red Dirt. If you visit iTunes you will see a red box enclosing the word Explicit next to every song off of Red Dirt. Andre is a dirty bird with a l
ove for the ladies, and he most certainly likes to share the things he likes about him most. I caught Andre at the Continental Club at the 2006 SXSW music festival. KCs Burly Q ladies Etta Vendetta and Gilda Lily performed a saucy burlesque with Andre, and needless to say, it proved to be one steamy show. And not to worry, the Burly Q ladies will be up on stage shakin their sass once again.
KCs indie, experimental, country outfit, The Afterparty, is hot off of tour, out with a new album Under the Rainbow and will surely provide their usual crowd-pleasing performance. If you are not familiar with The Afterparty visit their MySpace page for a description provided by the Pitch Weekly that hits the Afterparty nail right on the head.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 22
Scroat Belly Reunion Show w/ Midday Ramblers @ REPLAY LOUNGE (Lawrence, KS) 3-7pm; $7 cover
Yeah- yeah- they are country-punk, but they are also rock/soul/bluegrass/metal and more way more. The labels could never convey that when you are listening to these smilin' maniacs, you might flashback: to hangin' out with those gearheads in the parking lot of the county fair, the ones talkin' shit, their FFA jackets torn up and covered in Black Flag patches. Those guys that would grab you into their truck and meet up with that sweet GTO on the red dirt road. cruisin' and then cutthroat racin' blastin' Motorhead the whole time. And after all that High Plains danger, you end up at some junkyard, watchin' a meteor shower. All while those boys had impromptu target practice with the rusty, Bud cans and one surprises you with a bracelet made of the pull tabs. Then a couple starts singin' some creepy hymn from church and you feel really, really lucky --- Hell yeah!! Scroat Belly is point-blank a Kansas classic; they are
fast/slow/sweet/salty/melodic/chaotic and leave their guts on the stage. If you, the music fan, have been apathetic or discouraged, if you have been brainwashed by Clear Channel, you will be revived this Sunday! And for those on probation (patchouli-drenched couple 3 yrs ago at Split Lip show, front row while The Derita Sisters were kickin' ass as openers, horrified and hands over ears for entire set), your attendance is mandatory! Everyone else, I know you'll be there let's support this homegrown, legendary band and show them how much we've missed 'em. Where are my manners? Scroat Belly: the sounds are scrumptious and lyrics quite delightful, you simply must join us on the patio if you don't, you will be remiss, goddamnit!!
Thank you to our friend and guest writer, the lovely Miss Killabeas, for sharing her words on Scroat Belly!

Boozeday Tuesday Matinee @ THE BRICK
8pm / 10:30pm; 2 bands / $5 cover
2 for 1 drink specials and $.75 tacos
Featuring: Honeywagen and Dead Girls Ruin Everything
Its always a good thing when Honeywagen takes the stage. And this time, they take it with Monty Black on bass, formerly of The Gaslights. Honeywagen released their second CD, Payday, in Spring of 2006 and its a bit more rockin than their first pop-tinged effort, Station Wow. Both are more than worth the purchase price, and without both, your local music collection is severely crippled. Cant make the show? Pick up their latest CD on Amazon.com

Back Porch Mary @ KNUCKLEHEADS
8pm; $7
Back Porch Mary is definitely one of the hardest working touring bands in the business. It seems this country rock outfit is constantly on the road. Some times acoustic and sometimes plugged in. You never know what you are going to get but its always worth the trip to their shows.

Jamie Searle of Its Over Happy Hour @ RECORD BAR
Great news came our way from the Its Over camp this week. Theyll be headed into the studio to record their first full-length this month. We here at Sad Dog HQ cant wait. Theres an opportunity to see the full band on Friday night (10/20 @ Record Bar) but this is a treat, as Jamie, voted Best Sexy Musician by Pitch readers, will take the stage solo for a little happy hour action.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26
Detroit Cobras, Taylor Hollingsworth and the Spidereaters and King Kahn and BBQ @
RECORD BAR
Strangely, neither Jaq nor I are all that familiar with Detroit Cobras. Strange because they sit on the Bloodshot Records label and we like just about all the bands and artists in the Bloodshot library. And for that reason we wanted to share with you a bit about them. Lacking knowledge we decided to borrow this little snippet from the motorcityrocks.com website.
The Detroit Cobras are one of the most original cover bands out there. Although the phrase "original cover band" sounds like an oxymoron, it fits for this band. The Cobras perform standards from the rich vaults of Motown, soul and 50's rock & roll. While most cover bands attempt to re-create the original, The Cobras take material from the past and build new, fresh versions. The result is a sound that's reminiscent of rock & roll roots, yet still full of innovation and garage rock energy.

OTHER NEWS:
Split Lip Rayfield Final Show dates announced:
Friday, December 1 @ LIBERTY HALL, Lawrence, KS
Friday, December 8 @ THE COTILLION, Wichita, KS
There are 11 dates leading up to the Kansas shows, and due to Kirk Rundstroms ongoing battle with esophageal cancer, he will retire from live performance following the final Split Lip dates in Kansas to concentrate on restoring his health. Although we dont know the plans of Jeff Eaton, Wayne Gottstine and Eric Mardis, they have all agreed, Split Lip Rayfield will not continue to perform in any incarnation after these shows.
We would like to thank the Split Lip boys for providing us with some of the best live shows the Sad Dog ladies have had the pleasure to attend, as well as the fantastic recordings that will continue to keep us shakin our asses over and over and over again. We wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavors.
But for nowdont miss the opportunity to spend one last night with Split Lip Rayfield!
And, you wont want to miss Scroat Belly, the band that spawned Split Lip Rayfield (featuring Kirk Rundstrom and Wayne Gottstine of SLR).

JAQS NOTES:
Heads Up Pups: Rockstar Super Showcase @ RECORD BAR
Friday, October 27th marks a night not to be missed in KC.
Heres the skinny. Be/Non is the backing band for a variety of KC singers to hit the stage and tear it up on some rock classics. A bit of a Rockstar Supernova rip-off (well, you know Ill be there!), Spice of Life Productions Bill Roach Sundahl will act as Master of Ceremonies. The list of songs from which to choose has been set and heres a taste of the confirmed performances:
Golden Earring: Radar Love / Gregg Todt of Federation of Horsepower
Van Halen; Hot for Teacher / Tim Nord of Shotgun Idols
Led Zeppelin: (Song Not Confirmed), but who cares when its Damon Jeffers of Hydrafader belting it out
Thin Lizzy: Cowboy Song / Steve Tulipana of Roman Numerals Pups, you and your ears are very lucky Steve jumped on this one, as this is one of my favorite songs of all time, and I would have had to embarrass myself on stage had it not been chosen. WHEW!! I will, however, be belting it with the rest of the Thin Lizzy fans.
So, there are many songs that have not been chosen and I dont see one lady in the group of rockers. Come on ladiesdont let the boys have all the fun!
There are still plenty of juicy tunes to choose by Kiss, Joan Jett, T-Rex, AC/DC, Journey, ZZ Top, Black Sabbath, Bon Jovi, The Cars, Van Halen, Def Leopard and Motley Crew.
Now, I have a couple of singer / song matchmaking ideas
Cody Wyoming (Golden Hearted Whores / Von Hodads) - Jeepster is yours.
Abigail Henderson (The Gaslights), The Cars Just What I Needed lady, you can knock this one out of the park.
So, did I spark your interest? I know you cant keep your paws off of this one!
For more information about the event and songs still available for the taking contact Michelle Cagle @ onozine@yahoo.com.

DIS NOTES:
It was a happy trip to Needmore Discs last week. A record store I grow to love with each visit. I prefer not to order CDs online. Theres something extremely gratifying about making the trip to record store, browsing the bins and finding pay dirt. This week it was the recent release from Bobby Bare Jr. The Longest Meow (Bloodshot Records). Its no secret were a fan of this fellow here at Sad Dog. Weve taken road trips to see him and have even asked for a photo-op with our fair boy Bare. Hes only been through KC once since I have been familiar with him and at that it was in the opening slot for Junior Brown where he charismatically won over the crowd with his rock and wit. Im making a trip to St. Paul this week and hell be playing in the neighboring Minneapolis. Ill be doing my darnedest to rush my dinner with colleagues to make the show. Im still cozying up to this record but can already tell its a keeper and will make the rounds in my CD changer as frequently as his las
t two. His latest effort is 11 songs long and recorded in just 11 hours on one day back in March 06. His friends and fellow musicians joined him that day. Talent pulled in from bands My Morning Jacket, ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, and Lambchop. His lyrics are once again charming and the music diverse - again making him one difficult to categorize and incredibly addicting.
*Bobby Bare Jr. is playing Mojos in Columbia, MO this weekend, Saturday, October 21.
