Krystle Warren and The Faculty @ DAVEY'S UPTOWN
8pm / $10
A Kansas City native, this singer / songwriter / guitar player / poet moved to Brooklyn, New York about three years ago, and still in her early 20's has performed at the Newport Folk Festival and toured with, Martha Wainwright (one of my favorite female vocalists) and Eryka Badu. Citing Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell and The Beatles as early influences. In describing there sound she writes on her website, "I don't believe it's really anything new. I mean, we're just reflecting on our musical taste. I personally, love classic rock and learned a lot from Brit pop, as well as jazz, R&B – so many styles all stemming from the same thing."
I remember a night about four years ago, my friends Wende and Terie and our new friends, musicians in Jon Dee Graham's line-up de jour, headed back to my Plaza apartment. Wende took a brief walk and came back with Krystle, her friend and band mate Solomon and his upright bass. She grabbed my guitar, Solomon grabbed the bass and we all partied till the wee hours of the morning to the sounds of her stunning vocals and the even mellow tone of the bass.
This wins the "reason to go out on a school night" show of the week. -jaq

UPCOMING EVENTS / RELEASES:
April 3 Billy Joe Shaver "Greatest Hits"
Friday, April 6TH @ ZONE GALLERY
Grand Hart: 20 Masterpieces of Modern Art
Do you need a reason to go to First Fridays in Kansas City's Crossroads Art District?
Former Husker Du drummer Grant Hart will show his work, as well as perform, at Zone Gallery, 415 E. 18th St. in downtown Kansas City, Missouri.
1979, a 17 year old Grant Hart founded the now legendary punk rock trio Husker Du with Bob Mould and Greg Norton, and released several recordings on the renowned record label SST, followed by major label stardom on with Warner Brothers. All of this is well known, as is the "rift" between Mould and Hart, and is now another chapter of music history. But a lesser known fact is, using a pseudonym, Hart designed all of Husker Du's award winning album artwork.
GRANT HART: 20 MASTERPIECES OF MODERN ART will feature "both recent and older collage work with history-specific title appropriation authentic to the early days of the American Punk Rock movement, but not unlike specific dada influences of the past century," according to a press release.
Towards the end of the show, Hart will also play a rare solo set with Minneapolis piedmont guitar impresario/roots singer Baby Grant Johnson opening up. Admission to the opening is free, but a small donation is requested for those staying on for the music, which begins at 8:00.
Thanks to Sad Dog friend Andrew Turner for sending us this show info!!

JAQ NOTES:
Amy Winehouse "Back to Black" (Island Records, 2007)
The US release of 'Back to Black' - #1 on the US Billboard Digital Album Chart and debuted at #7 on the Billboard Album Chart
'Back to Black' soon to go triple-platinum
Brit Awards 2007 Winner – British Female Solo Artist
So who gives a shit, right? There have been plenty of albums that have charted in various degrees that you and I wouldn't give one hoot to have in our collection.
And what is up with this new British Invasion of young rebellious women using there music as platforms to get back at there ex's?
Well, 'Back to Black' has certainly earned its accolades and awards, Amy Winehouse is the real thing, and since I bought the album two weeks ago, it has become an addiction.
She draws on R&B and soul, mixing the Motown Sound of the Supremes, Lauryn Hill and a little dose of 60's Dusty Springfield. Winehouse stirs her sexy, sassy, sultry sound with honest, witty and naughty lyrics - lending credence to her tabloid bad-girl image. Her first single, and first track on the album, is an immediately catchy number called "Rehab" where she talks about her refusal to go to rehab after it was encouraged by her management company. After I listened to "Rehab" about ten times in a row, I let the album play through. It stayed strong from the second track "You Know I'm No Good" (about get caught cheating on her boyfriend, with her ex-boyfriend, when he discovers she has a carpet burn) until the last track, a remix version of "You Know I'm No Good" featuring rap vocals by Ghostface Killah.
Winehouse is an unapologetic alcoholic firecracker, a dream star for the press, consistently on the pages of British tabloids. Her most famous bout of alcohol-induced antics came when she heckled Bono during his speech at the Q Awards. "When questioned during an interview about being violent when drunk, Winehouse responded, 'I have a really good time some nights, but then I push it over the edge and ruin my boyfriend's night. I'm an ugly dick-head drunk, I really am." – Wikipedia.
Coifed with a bouffant hairdo, pouty lips and tattoos, Winehouse has gusto and her music is a constant contradiction of the naughty and the nice. I am sticking by this one and suggesting you add it to your shopping list.
