Hailing from Lawrence, KS and one of the bands featured on the Oxblood Records "First Blood" local compilation, this alt/indie rock, pop band will be kicking out the tunes of Memphis-based 70's power pop group Big Star.
"Drawing upon pop music traditions - The Beatles, The Byrds, The Kinks, The Zombies - Big Star's music was lyrical, powerful, and at times, melancholic pop for the post-1960's. Their approach not only recalled the British Invasion groups but the spare, relaxed style of Stax Records, The Memphis soul label …" - Wikipedia

LOCAL NEWS:
Anvil Chorus to Call it Quits: (Received via Myspace this week)
Hi All-
Anvil Chorus will be no more very soon. While this news could be taken as sad news...do not fret...it was just time for this to happen and actually, I am quite excited. We are playing this Friday at The Hurricane with David Gaume on bass...then we will finish out our shows on the 30th, the 11th and the 13th with Jenny Carr on bass. Be sure to come and wish us well.
Speaking of Jenny Carr...she is playing in our new project, Mj & The Bear. Although there is no music on our myspace page, there soon will be. Please add us at myspace.com/mjandthebear
You may notice that the members of MJ & The Bear are the same as Anvil Chorus, sans our old bass player and adding Jenny...then your next question may be..why are you breaking up?
Well...there are five Anvil Chorus bands...five....and with the addition of Jenny...we just couldn't call it Anvil Chorus anymore....it was just time to lay that name and all that I associated with it, to bed.
So...here's to new beginnings...just in time for spring!
Thank you all so very much for all of your help and support! See you at the show!

JAQ NOTES:
Anodyne Records Showcase at SXSW – A Good Day for KC!
2:30 – The Hearer's (Anodyne Showcase @ The Parish) Brilliant as usual! Unfortunately the crowd was still trickling in when during their show … most unfortunate for those who showed up later and missed what proved to be a beautifully passionate set filled with old songs and new. There is no denying how much I love this band of merry musicians and the sounds they create.
3:30 pm – The Architects (Anodyne Showcase @ The Parish) With The Parish half full, the Architects pulled out all the stops unleashing another set bursting at the seams with energy. The Architects showed SXSW that KC can, and will, f-in ROCK THE HOUSE!!!
4:30pm – The Meat Puppets (Anodyne Showcase @ The Parish) This was my second time seeing the Puppets in two days and it got better with every show. By the time they hit the stage the house was full, and from what I hear, at capacity with a line to get in. Over the past eleven years I have listened to their recordings with the feeling of nostalgia. No longer!!! Recently picked up by Anodyne Records, the Puppets are back, feet firmly planted in the present, a new album on the way and a street buzz you can't escape. The energy in The Parish was like getting drunk and laughing your ass off with an old friend you haven't seen in awhile. We had a rock moment. We were very happy.
As you know, I am extremely proud of KC and equally proud of the music born in its borders. Today was a great day for Anodyne Records and KC music.
DI'S NOTES:
"The Best of No Depression: writing About American Music" (2005)
I'm hitting the road this weekend for a family visit up to Iowa. I'm taking along the perfect companion for brief opportunities to read, "The Best of No Depression: Writing About American Music". To celebrate No Depression's tenth anniversary and spotlight some of the most important artists and trends in alt.country music, No Depression founders and editors Grant Alden and Peter Blackstock compiled this "best of" pulling from twenty-five of the magazine's best and most representative feature articles. Starting off with a great piece on Alejandro Escovedo, it reveals many aspects about the man that I had yet to learn even as a long-time fan. Since the magazine's founding in 1995 in Seattle, Washington, No Depression has reported on and helped define the music most often referred to alt.country, Americana or roots music. Despite launching a magazine focused on a style of music that continues to fail to register on American pop culture radar and the fact that they were doing it in a c
ity that was having an ongoing love affair with all things grunge, No Depression magazine has become the bible for everyone seeking genuine American roots music.
This anniversary book also features articles on artists such as: Johnny Cash, Jon Dee Graham, Ray Price, Lucinda Williams and post-punk country-influenced bands Wilco and the Drive-By Truckers. Alden and Blackstock have also written a preface in which they discuss the alt.country phenomenon, the history and their editorial philosophy. With a circulation of fewer than 35,000 copies per issue, No Depression remains a relatively small-time player in the media industry. This book is a great introduction to all things alt.country especially those new to No Depression or alternative country as a whole.
