Grant Hart @ ZONE GALLERY (415 E. 18th Street)
Grant Hart: 20 Masterpieces of Modern Art
Former Husker Du drummer Grant Hart will show his work, as well as perform, at
Zone Gallery, 415 E. 18th St. in downtown Kansas City, Missouri.
1979, a 17 year old Grant Hart founded the now legendary punk rock trio Husker Du with Bob Mould and Greg Norton, and released several recordings on the renowned record label SST, followed by major label stardom on with Warner Brothers. All of this is well known, as is the "rift" between Mould and Hart, and is now another chapter of music history. But a lesser known fact is, using a pseudonym, Hart designed all of Husker Du's award winning album artwork.
GRANT HART: 20 MASTERPIECES OF MODERN ART will feature "both recent and older collage work with history-specific title appropriation authentic to the early days of the American Punk Rock movement, but not unlike specific dada influences of the past century," according to a press release. Hart will also play a rare solo set with Minneapolis piedmont guitar impresario/roots singer Baby Grant Johnson opening up. Admission to the opening is free, but a small donation is requested for those staying on for the music, which begins at 8:00.
Thanks to Sad Dog friend Andrew Turner for sending us this show info!!

Neko Case and Jon Rauhouse @ LIBERTY HALL
I'm sitting in Saint Paul, MN tonight with temps reaching down to the single digits. I won't be returning in time to catch Neko's show Friday night making these temps even harder to bear. Last year Neko Case's "Fox Confessor Brings the Flood" landed on my best of 2006 amongst many other "best of" lists. It's a record that instantly sucked me in for the long haul and I imagine that it'll be one I'll instantly replace as I so often have to do when I lend those favorites out or frequently disappear. -di

Truckstop Honeymoon, Sterilize Stereo and Mark Smeltzer @ THE BRICK
Some folk don't like buskers but I sure do. Some people call them beggars but I only see true musicians giving their all on city streets in hopes that the payback might be a dollar in their bucket. Such is where the love story of Truckstop Honeymoon started…on the streets of New Orleans. I first fell in love with this duo one cold January night at Davey's Uptown. It was midweek and a friend and I needed some libation to warm us up … we chose our closest and most favorite place. Katie Euliss and Mike West, otherwise known as Truckstop Honeymoon, were already on the small stage at Davey's and had us in tears of laughter before we could order up our first drink and grab a seat. They're a dynamic wedded duo of marital and audience bliss. They "play tough, funny, hi-octane songs about interstates, pinball arcades and true love. After a court house wedding, the pair hit the road. They spent their wedding night in a truck stop somewhere between Lafayette and the Atchafalya Swamp. And so T
ruckstop Honeymoon was born." Despite their recent run-in with a bitch named Katrina who took no names and destroyed their home they relocated to Kansas with the help of their good friend Kirk Rundstrom (Split Lip Rayfield). They're a couple of good hearted folks who I imagine could entertain just about anywhere, stage to street. -di

The 359's and Bleeding Hands @ FRED P. OTTS
Once upon a time there was a great little band called The Bad Ideas. Their life was much too short. One good half of The Bad Ideas went and joined another great little band called The Gaslights and that joint venture ended much too soon. Two short lives surely must spawn a good hearty one….let's hope it's called The 359's. If not, there's some Bleeding Hands that are poised to do the job.

Again, probably my favorite way to discover someone I dig is catching them by accident when I'm expecting nothing. Such is the case with Cory. He plays Davey's from time to time and assaults each time with his well crafted lyrics and wit. I've never fancied myself and connoisseur of the singer/songwriter genre but I would gather Cory would be gem amongst those that do. I do know that my favorites in the genre are darkly humorous and Cory has that nailed. He claims Lucero in his company of friends and often plays shows with them. For fans of Lucero this one is a no brainer. -di

Yo La Tengo @ THE GRANADA (Lawrence, KS)
While always grasping some significant critical acclaim they have never enjoyed a wide audience. Yo La Tengo has a couple gems that have remained in my personal standards for more than a decade. It began in 1990 with the release of "Fakebook", an album of mostly acoustic tunes, including covers from Gene Clark, Cat Stevens, Rex Garvin & the Mighty Cravers, The Escorts, The Flamin' Groovies, The Scene Is Now, the Kinks, the Pastels, and my personal favorite "Speeding Motorcycle" by Daniel Johnston. I'm not sure any critic or fan has ever locked them into one style as they tend to draw on folk, punk rock, shoegazing, long instrumental noise-jams and electronica. I've seen them play in small venues and those as large as a college gymnasium. September '06 saw the release of their latest "I'm Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass". So eclectic that sometimes when I have it in shuffle it takes a second to recognize who it is when they come up. Frankly, I can't think of one friend th
at might enjoy their shows. But those of you that like to experience something a little varied in the performance of one band, here's your ticket. -di

JAQ NOTES:
November 2006 I some friends and I headed to Davey's to see Patrice Pike. You see, I have a reality TV addiction in the form of "Rockstar", and Patrice was one of the rockers who didn't make the final cut. Patrice's performance was impressive, she is cute as a button, has a fantastic voice and an amazing stage presence. But it was someone else that night that blew me away. The following is what I wrote after that Nov. '06 show.
Ginger Leigh "Sugar In My Coffee" (2006, BMI)
"Last Thursday night I made it to Davey's to check out Patrice Pike, of Rockstar Supernova fame. Apparently, after her world wind summer as a "Rockstar", she went back to Austin with a wish list of musicians she wanted in her touring band … and she got them all. KC was the first night that the band members took turns showing off their solo wares, in place of an official opening act. All talented musicians, but no one "moved me." In a moment of boredom I took to the side bar to chat with some friends. At one point a previously unheard voice permeated the entire bar, beckoning us all to move towards the stage. The voice belonged to a woman named Ginger Leigh, not a member of the band, but manager of Patrice Pike who hopped up on stage for a quick tune. It only took the one to have me completely engaged, then like a well-seasoned tease, her performance ended as if she had never been at Davey's at all. That voice "moved me." And being it was my lucky day she had her album "Sugar In My
Coffee" for sale."
Leigh has a powerhouse voice and is in completely in control of every note she hits. She has a voice that commands attention and sinks into your bones. Odd as it may sound, the first description that came to my mind when I popped Sugar In My Coffee was, "This is what Annie Lennox would sound like had she grown up in Austin." I still stick to that description and still can't get enough Sugar In My Coffee.
Tonight Ginger opens up for Patrice. Get there early!
DI'S NOTES:
I'm worried. I'm worried about Billy Joe Shaver. Since the first time I saw him in December 2005 I've been in full on fan to performer love! Earlier this week I saw a headline on cnn.com "Country Singer Wanted in Shooting". I click and jaw hits floor. According to major news streams my favorite country outlaw has made good on his reputation and is "wanted" following a shooting outside a Texas bar!!! "Holy smokes!" <Edited to ensure email delivery!> Here's what I read on CNN…
"After Shaver left a bar in Lorena on Saturday night, a drunk, aggressive stranger with a knife followed him into the parking lot, said attorney Joseph A. Turner of Austin. Shaver shot him in self-defense, he said. Police in Lorena -- about 80 miles north of Austin -- issued arrest warrants late Monday on charges of aggravated assault and possessing a firearm in a prohibited place, Turner said. Shaver attempted to surrender to Austin police Monday night but was not arrested because the police did not have a record of the warrants, said Turner, who accompanied Shaver. <<huh?..>> Lorena authorities could not be reached for comment early Tuesday. We're working with the police to get this resolved," Turner told The Associated Press. "His priority is dealing with this issue."
The shooting occurred at 8:30 p.m. Saturday outside Papa Joe's Texas Saloon, according to Lorena police. The victim was shot in the cheek but was talking and alert afterward, police said. He was hospitalized. Turner declined to elaborate or say whether anything occurred inside the bar between Shaver and the victim. He said Shaver did not know the man." On one hand I'm seeing some great songs in Billy Joe's future, on the other I'm a bit worried that my favorite country songwriter may just not make it up here for his May 24th show at Knuckleheads! Billy Joe is mighty in his ability to survive tragedy and sadly, this may be one of his easiest challenges to overcome. Won't you say a little prayer or raise a glass in hopes that he makes it through this one too!
