JAQ'S NOTES:
Laurel Canyon: The Inside Story of Rock and Roll's Legendary Neighborhood
By Michael Walker
With spring and summer tapping at the door, a new read is always good to have around for some lazy days of relaxin' in the hammock and soaking up the rays. For those of you who get into a nip of music history, Laurel Canyon is right up your alley.
In a pocket of hills rising up from Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, CA sits Laurel Canyon. In the early 60's, after Elvis had shaken his hips and Jerry Lee Lewis shook societies mores, a collective of musicians gravitated to these hills and unknowingly began a musical revolution that would catapult the sound of music and the industry into a new arena. The story of Laurel Canyon takes us on a journey through musical history that began with an earthy group of folk singers and hedonistic artists. Joni Mitchell and Gram Nash would write the "anthem" of the times "Our House" at the piano in their quaint cottage; the Byrds would set the stage by hitting it big with their new psychedelic sound; Mama Cass would bring together a group of musicians soon to be called Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; Frank Zappa would create a refuge for rag tag of estranged creative libertines; a gig at the Whiskey A Go-Go would launch your career; and mind-enhancing drugs were the flavor of choice. But this was
just the beginning.
Soon, the happy hill of peace and love would find the times a changin' as Charles Manson went on killing spree and the infamous chaos of the Altamont Festival would create a shift in the scene. Musicians were suddenly swimming in a sea of wealth, and with this wealth came a bit of paranoia, only exacerbated by the new drug of choice, cocaine. The Brits hit the scene and soon it was high-powered arena rock groups like Led Zeppelin that would drown out that peaceful easy feeling. The party began and the Continental Hyatt House, a.k.a. "Riot House" became the new refuge for the free spirited, best depicted in the 2000 Cameron Crowe film "Almost Famous".
Laurel Canyon is definitely and enjoyable read and places you in a land where sex, drugs and rock n' roll was the norm.
Albums to listen to while reading Laurel Canyon: CSNY "So Far", The Best of Buffalo Springfield and Joni Mitchell's "Hits".
Films to watch while reading Laurel Canyon: "Almost Famous" (2000 – starring Patrick Fugit, Billy Crudup, Kate Hudson and Jason Lee) and "Laurel Canyon" (2002 -starring Francis McDormand and Christian Bale).

DI'S NOTES:
This month's issue of Spin arrived in the mail yesterday and I browsed through the feature on summer music festivals scheduled for this summer. We'll mention a few on the Sad Dog pages as they approach for those of you thirsty for a road trip. But for a full read on the festival season line-up Spin is great start. While not featured, local area festival Wakarusa did make the calendar and always has a few of my favorites on the bill. Check their website for the hefty line-up. www.wakarusa.com While many of the festival line-ups that can be enticing the Spin's narrative of conditions brings back all the ugliness of the festival scene. The Spin feature does nothing to make any of the festivals inviting for newbies or those of us that may have outgrown the fearlessness of our youth. I'll forego the huge genre crossing line ups, sweat-filled patchouli scented coziness of crowds and high dollar concessions for my familiar air conditioned venues a close drive from home and away from the 7
2 hour sleeplessness. I have fond memories of the first several Lollapaloozas and a day or two at Wakarusa but that may be the end of the road for my bank of festival memories.
