KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND !!!

FRIDAY, JANUARY 28

Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers w/ Goodnight Daylight and Kristie Stremel @ DAVEY’S

UPTOWN

Not likely to be a stage show you’ll soon forget Th’ Legendary Shack Shakers are

back with their undeniable fury to entertain. Rock-a-billy to polka, punk to

gospel, country to blues. These boys have tossed it all together and given birth

to a sound platform that will riddle you with a vigorous live show. We’re

looking forward to catching Goodnight Daylight for the first time this weekend.

When KC/Lawrence music veterans (ex-members of Victorstands, PAW, The New

Tragedies, Turquiose Sol and Season to Risk) shake it up, it’s bound to be a

good time. But, there is more. We also get the country roots rock of KC

singer/songwriter/producer Kristie Stremel. Always a powerful performer, this

former member of Frogpond and Exit 159 has matured in her songwriting and is

certainly not afraid to bare her soul.

Federation of Horse Power w/ Spittin’ Cobras (ex-Houston), and Deathray Angels

I recently had the pleasure of seeing Federation of Horsepower again after an

inexcusable absence from their shows. I could be mistaken but I believe there is

a gentleman-ness to their rock ways. There is something about their

fuel-injected-for-the-well-weathered-rockers that still makes you want to take

the whole bunch of ‘em home to mom. They sting but in that special good way. -di

The Capsules w/ The Dark Circles, and Matches the Sky @ THE BRICK

The Capsules out in the clubs performing songs from their new EP

“Home”, which features 5 new songs in addition to a cover of the Jesus and Mary

Chain song “Down On Me” The Dark Circles (dark indie pop), the newest addition

to the KC indie scene. Matches The Sky (alternative pop rock) has drawn

comparisons to Tool, Jeff Buckley and The Cure.

Cheap Trick @ AMERISTAR CASINO

“She’s Tight”…Yeah, I guess a little too tight to spring for the $45 - $60

tickets, but for those of you who sprung, it is well worth every penny. One of

my all time favorite shows, Cheap Trick, Old 97’s and Outhouse, one Halloween

weekend years ago, way out south at Guitars and Cadillac’s. Tonight I will have

to be happy with the memory of the boys.

-jaq

Cheap Trick was my “first shows” with semi-parental guidance way back on the

Dream Police Tour. No doubt the experience of your “first” is bound to leave an

impression. Cheap Trick is very likely the reason my show-going ways continues

now. If you have the means, get out for this one. -di

SATURDAY, JANUARY 29

The Litigators 5:30pm In-Store @ RECYCLED SOUNDS

We love the straight-forward rock of The Litigators and are happy to announce

that their first EP, “Look Out For the Bottom Line” is on the shelves. Get your

tails down to Westport Road and Main Saturday for a live taste of the goods,

then, take the boys home with you.

Red Guitar w/ Builder and Dr. Woo @ THE HURRICANE

Kansas City acoustic based rock group delivers sweet harmonies with a smooth

rustic sound that has led to comparison to The Jayhawks. Although we haven’t had

a chance to check out the live show, their 2003 album “Based on a Blue Story” is

wonderfully produced and has caught the attention of the Sad Dog ladies. You can

have a listen at www.cdbaby.com, iTunes, Dogbite Music, and Rhapsody, check them

out at www.lawrence.com/turnpike/, or just head on down to the Hurricane for a

live viewing.

JAQ’S NOTES:

Well, if I am too tight to buck up for a night at the Ameristar to see Cheap

Trick, I most certainly have no problem dippin’ into the music fund for the

February 4 show of legends at the Uptown Theater. Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt, Guy

Clark and Joe Ely will be seated onstage, acoustic guitars in hand, and a

catalogue of music that can only be rivaled by Dylan himself. Lyle Lovett, a

Texas boy raised on the music of the Outlaws, blends country, blues, and rock.

Although he is most often categorized as a country artist, hence his 2005 Grammy

nominee for Best Country Album and Best Male Vocal Performance for “My Baby

Don’t Tolerate”, he can’t be confined and continues to jump genres. John Hiatt

left his home in Indiana at age eighteen and made the trip to Nashville. He now

performs for us with 18 albums under his belt and slew of songs recorded by

artists such as Three Dog Night (“Sure As I’m Sitting Here”) and Bonnie Raitt

(“Thing Called Love”). Other artists who have recorded a Hiatt song include Bob

Dylan, Iggy Pop & Willie Nelson. He is humorous, tender and truthful, a genuine

storyteller. Guy Clark, hailing from Texas, has often been called a “national

treasure” and has earned the title of “Songbuilder”. His songwriting began in

the 60’s in the company of a couple of a couple of other treasures Jerry Jeff

Walker and Townes Van Zandt. His songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Vince

Gill, Ricky Scaggs, and Rodney Crowell, and he collaborates with the likes of

Gillian Welch, David Rawlings, Tim O’Brian. His latest release “The Dark” is a

collection of 12 songs, 11 of which were co-written by Clark and Townes Van

Zandt. Joe Ely, Austin Man, Texas Troubadour, a rough exterior and sensitive

smile, with a writing style that tells the tales of cowboys, rodeos, lovely

senoritas, tragedy and love stories. He collaborates with Jimmy Dale Gilmore and

Butch Hancock in the “Flatlanders” and David Hildalgo and Cesar Rosas (Los

Lobos), Raul Malo (The Mavericks) and many more in “Los Super Seven”. You will

frequently see him on the bill with Bruce Springsteen and basically makes me

quiver in my boots, as those Austin singer/songwriters tend to do. He is a

favorite of mine, and although all of his releases are in high rotation in the

ol’ cd player, “Letters to Laredo” goes down as an all time fav. I have had the

privilege of seeing Joe and John live and would be in heaven just to see one of

them again. But this night, I get them and much more. My friends Pete and Julie

caught the show in the Big Apple and it blew their socks off. So, I highly

suggest you take advantage of what may be a once in a lifetime chance to see a

group of artists such as these together onstage. Or, you can just wait and

listen to me gloat after it’s all said and sung.

DI’S NOTES:

“Let’s Rock-n-Roll, Let’s Rock-n-Roll”….well the girls at Sad Dog certainly did

that last weekend. We love our town but needed an escape so we hit the road to

Columbia to catch our boy Bobby Bare Jr. at MOJO’S last Friday night. Bobby Bare

Jr.’s latest release “From the End of Your Leash” was named one of the “Ten Best

Albums You Didn’t Hear of 2004” in the Jan. 05 issue of Spin. But you pups know

how good it is, we’ve been talking it about it for months. Whether toned down

to a country grove, as he put forth opening for Junior Brown at the Grand

Emporium in September, or a flesh cutting rock show as he did last weekend,

never go in with expectations but always expect to be humbled and affected.

Possibly, one of the most clever songwriters of our time, his stories of lost

love to cocaine, love letters to rock legends, guilt-free killing of valentines,

flat-chested girls and monks in discos, will all shift slightly or drastically

show to show. And, I must tell you, the folks at Mojo’s are some of the most

hospitable folks we’ve come across. The next day we zoomed back across the state

as we had a well anticipated evening out ahead of us to take in the Dog Fight

Dames do some damage on the Bionics at the KC Roller Warrior Derby! Well, we

didn’t know it would end with a Dames victory but you can guess why we picked

them as “our team”. We arrived to a sold out crowd and the smell of our youth.

Yep, those skate leather, family friendly concessions and wheels on wood scents

came slamming back in a full-on smell memory of our youthful days. We know these

ladies have been working hard at their craft and the entertainment punch from

start to finish exceeded our raucous-night-out expectations. Wylde Chipmunck &

the Cuddly Poos were in all their glory at possibly the most appropriate crowd

they’ll ever find. We’re happy to report that we escaped the evening, from our

front row perch, without a skate in the eye. And we’re taking you all to the

next bout.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 21
The Ramalamas w/The Omen (Denver) and The Deathray Angels @ THE BRICK
KCs The Ramalamas are always a raucous good time and it sounds like The Omens will make a trip to the Brick extra sweet tonight. This self-described beat-punk band draws influences from the early-60s garage era. And any band that carries harp, maracas and an organ in tow is worth a go-see.

Greg Brown @ LIBERTY HALL
Another worthy reason to venture West is to catch a live performance by this 2-time Grammy nominated folk singer/songwriter. With over a dozen albums under his belt, Greg is charming and sexy with an endearing dry humor to boot. His musical roots stem from a mother who played electric, a granddad who played banjo, and a Holy Roller preacher for a daddy who introduced Greg to the soulful sounds of Gospel. In early 2004, Red House Records and the Breast Cancer Fund released Going Driftless: An Artists Tribute to Greg Brown with an all-star cast of artists (Lucinda Williams, Gillian Welch, Ani DiFranco, Iris Dement, daughters Pieta, Zoe and Constie, and many more) performing their favorite Greg tunes. All proceeds from this album are donated to the Breast Cancer Fund. You will be thoroughly satisfied spending an intimate evening with Greg.

JAQS NOTES:
Well, its been a difficult week as my dear kitty Ian (named after Ian Astbury of The Cult way back in my early 20s when I lived and breathed The Cult) has gone to frolic with our other beloved feline friends in kitty heaven. So I dont have tales of my usual antics to share, I just look forward to the many shows coming up in the next week. Be sure, that I will be back in true form and prepared to delight you with my rock and roll stories.

DIS NOTES:
LATE last Saturday night I stopped in my neighborhood bar Daveys Uptown, not to catch the show but to top off three long work days with a night cap and pals. Well, I was getting along nicely when one of my favorite things in the world happened. I had a frosty drink in hand, in the midst of great conversation with good friends when we were pleasantly interrupted by what we heard on stage in the other room. I think thats rock-n-roll said one pal and with that we gathered up our parkas in one fell swoop and headed to the stage room. Theres just nothing better than being introduced to a band in that manner. Hasnt happened to me since the first time I saw Pendergast...and that was a great conversation to be pulled away from. Back to point...ladies and gentleman, Im talking about Phonocaptors from St. Louis. Never before have they entered my radar but with their performance last Saturday night they can now officially add someone in KC to their fan base. The most pleasing thing about this band is that they dont immediately call references to mind...not garage, not alt, not roots, not a sound from this city or that, no direct nods to sub-genre, era or band. Rock-n-roll in its glorious simplicity with each new song taking you to a different place while at the same time giving notice to the bands command of their own personal and solid style. On Pro-Vel Records Call it What You Want (The Safes are label mates) pick it up. Its not soon to leave my changer. Get it now so you can shake it with the cool kids the next time they roll through town.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 15

Anne McCue (and her trio) 8pm @ DAVEY’S UPTOWN

Meet Anne McCue, singer, songwriter and guitarist with the confidence, and talent, to pull off a 9-minute cover of the Hendrix tune “Machine Gun”. With luck on her side, Anne, originally from Australia, hit the States with her band Eden and found herself on tour with the Lilith Fair. Eventually she went off solo and through a mutual friend, her CD landed in the hands of Lucinda Williams. Obviously impressed, Lucinda saw her show and invited Anne to join her on a 23-date tour as her opener. This tour lead to a few gigs with Richard Thompson, some shows with Heart and now an upcoming trip to L.A. to open up for Los Lobos. Currently she is touring with her trio through the Midwest in support of her third solo album “Roll”. A combo of American roots, blues, country and alt-country, “Roll” is getting rave reviews across the board and Lucinda has sited Anne as her “new favorite artist”.  Anne is off to Europe in April and you may not get a chance to see this lady in a small club ag

ain. For you alt-country, blues, roots lovin’ pups, get down to Main Street tonight and check her out.

The Shebangs w/ The Mood Swing Set @ THE REPLAY

Here’s what our friend Beas has to say:

“The Shebangs, a pop punk garage trio with clever/thoughtful lyrics.

Reminiscent of the Sonics, the Headcoatees, the Launderettes...these 2 chicks and one dude continue to expand their burgeoning talent consistently wowing crowds, from all scenes with their catchy-yet-complicated, bouncy-yet-provocative, raw / rockin' sound.

The Mood Swing Set, another 2 ladies/1 lucky guy outfit--this band features the KC/Lawrence area legend Jon Harrison and they stole the show at the recent Kinks

Tribute...fun & memorable, this act makes me think of suckin' on some bit-o-honeys, slurping schlitz beer whilst lounging on a big fuzzy green sofa w/your neighborhood gang.”

SUNDAY, JANUARY 16

The Lucky Graves @ FRED P. OTTS

Well you know how we love Sunday nights at P. Otts especially when they are followed by a National holiday. The Lucky Graves are back and with a bit of a change in appearance. What originally started as an acoustic duo born in KC in 2004, the band has transformed into a trio featuring Adam Stotts (Overstep, Golden Hearted Whores) on guitar and vocals, fellow Whore Ben Ruth (Overstep, Grand Marquis) on bass, and on drums, well that is a surprise for all. Can’t wait to see what the boys have in store for us. Let’s see if they can honor America’s fallen hero like any good rock band playing the night before MLK Day should.

JAQ’S NOTES:

Billy Goat

In the early to mid-90’s you could find me sitting at a table on a Thursday night surrounded by a ridiculous amount of $0.10 draws and rockin’ out to the likes of Trip Shakespeare, The Unconscious, or Mongel Beach Party at the Shadow. If I wasn’t there, all you had to do was journey up the street to The Hurricane where you would find me sitting on the barstool, usually right next to the front door, and getting poured frightfully strong drinks by everyone’s favorite bartender Tommy. Looking back on these days I think, “My ‘O My, how did I escape it all in one piece”. But I also look back on those days and have to smile. Those were the days I could walk into that bar on Broadway and see Uncle Tupelo, The New Duncan Imperials, The Lemonheads, Punkinhead and many, many, many more.

My favorite memories, however, have to be the summer nights spent on the patio with Billy Goat. The driving percussion of this Texas funk band somehow sent us into a trance and forced us to lose all inhibition. Many would anxiously wait for the moment they found themselves covered in corn flakes and chocolate sauce, as many of us fled the front of the stage avoiding the mess. The Billy Goat boys sent us all flailing about as if were part of a native drum circle, and Kim Pruitt danced around erotically enticing the crowd to do the same. Then they would whip into “Everybody Take Your Clothes Off”, and well, many did. I remember going through my day singing “Chef Boyardee, and Mrs. Baird, havin’ a baby…Top Ramen over there, there, there, there.” I never really knew who Mrs. Baird was until my first trip to an Austin, Texas grocery store. It was there that I discovered that Ninnie Baird was this sweet little lady who had her name on delicious baked breads and snack cakes. I’m sur

e she is oblivious to the fact that she got together with the Chef and produced Raman babies. After the show was over and we heard the ever popular, “You don’t have to go home, but you can’t stay here”, many would head out for a night of debauchery at what was lovingly deemed “The Billy Goat House”.

Oh, those were the days. Days that I thought were memories of the past until the announcement of the Billy Goat Reunion at Davey’s. I think to myself, “Man, can I actually relive that time of my misguided life”. Then I think, “How could I not”!!! This time I might even head up front for a shower of corn flakes and chocolate sauce.

DI’S NOTES:

Making it brief this week folks as I’m tied up with some long days/nights this week--working my paying job. But I did want to share a couple great things I’ve recently discovered online.

Little Hits: Jon Harrison, archivist, vinyl buyer and appraiser for Love Garden in Lawrence has done a very, very cool thing. Daily, he archives a new song, from vinyl, (many of which have local ties), reviews it and posts it to this site www.littlehits.com. He is re-introducing some lost gems and giving us another great place to go to (re)discover music, one song at a time. While Littlehits.com has only been online a short time, by all appearances, Harrison is off to a great start.  Either this man has one loaded brain of music knowledge or he is a die-hard researcher. Bookmark this site and read it daily.

Bloodshot Records Radio: That’s right Bloodshot Records has a “Twang” channel on Accuradio.com. Check it out. Featuring Bloodshot Artists and those they love. It’s been a great companion to some long hours on the old PC.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 9
Blank Stares 11:00pm @ THE HURRICANE
Usually Sunday is a night destined for Fred P. Otts. But tonight, we’re throwin’ you another bone.
Rising from the ashes of (KC) local bands Jade Raven and the Trophy Wives,
Blank Stares started making music in early 2003. Featuring originalmembers Matthew Zager on bass, Danny Leonard on lead vocals, and newlyadded members and old friends Wes Johnson on drums and Steve Hitner onguitar, the new lineup has transformed the bands’ sound from a chunkypost-punk drive to a more melodic and spacious style of Indie rock, allthe while maintaining a DIY sensibility. While some of the bands’earlier songs have made it into their live shows, the Blank Stares arecontinuously crafting new material to bring to the public ear. Currentcrowd pleasers include the hard driving "Clear a Path" and the moresomber "Can’t Stand Still".  The boys are looking forward
to their upcoming performances and plan to expand their audience beyond
KC’s borders real soon. They’ll have no problem there. And you can makea night of it and stick around for the Strange Bedfellows “New WaveCity”.

JAQ’S NOTES:
Bob Dylan. Ok, as some of you Sad Doggers know from past notes, I had aface-to-face with, in my opinion, the lyrical king of my time. I willrelive the meeting due to its humor and idiocy. I was working an event, and being the professional I am, did not want to jump the man andinundate him with I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU. So, all that cameout was “Welcome to Kansas City”. Yeah, I suck, and this has been arunning joke at Sad Dog Headquarters since t he “meeting”. Recently I have seen the man give an extremely profound interview on 60minutes, which by the way, was his first interview in 20 years. I haveheard stories about the time Charlie Sexton, legendary Austinguitarist/producer (Lucinda Williams, Jon Dee Graham), was asked tojoin Dylan’s band. As the story goes he was informed that he would needto know some 300 songs, but on occasion, Bob would decide to play themin a different key at any given moment. So, learn these 300 songs andbe prepared to play them in any key at any time. Wow! But that is thenature and the mystery of a Dylan live show. I have seen Dylan livewhen I was less than impressed, and I also site his show at Uptown Theater, w/ Charlie charming me with his guitar and Dylan throwing out atribute to a recently passed Warren Zevon, as one of my most memorablelive music moments EVER.  Dylan has written over 500 songs and putout 40 albums throughout his career. I would venture to say that Dylansongs have been covered by more bands than any other singer/songwriterin musical history. And it seems that now, he is in a time of his lifewhere he is ready to divulge the man behind the lyrics.
Now we have a wonderful insight into his early days with his newbiography, the Bob Dylan Chronicles: Volume One. This publication takesyou on a journey of his life in 1961, and his travels from Minnesota toNew York City in search of Woody Guthrie and the many otherextraordinary people he befriended along the way.  This book hashad great reviews and is an amazing story. But what else would youexpect from THE storyteller.

DI’S NOTES:
The entertainment fund is dry and winter's chill has set in but thereare way too many cool things going on this weekend to keep us in. Someof KC's finest are taking the stage this weekend to start the New Yearoff correctly. Let's take a look at Friday night. Magf**kingnificent ison cue at The Hurricane playing "Disintegration" in full. Cure fans, and who isn't one, get out. Robert Smith won't be in the house but ifyou take in some libation and close your eyes gently it's pretty damnclose to the real deal. Davey's Uptown presents a ferocious music bout, lining up KC's best rock facing it off. (check out the line-up above)Crowd participation is encouraged and expected – you pick the win ner.Saturday night at The Brick is the place to be - KC's Premiere VarietyShow - Donkey Show. You can read the line up we’ve dealt you but youjust never know what to expect. Roach of SOL Productions knows how tocreate an outstanding good time. The flow is on mark and you can't findbetter acts and variety anywhere in Kansas City. Again, it looks like anight out, not to disappoint. Trevor and Viv of the Mersey Lads will bemaking a rare Kansas City appearance. Watch out for these blokes, definitely hilarious with the crooning and possibly dangerous by merepresence. Federation of Horsepower will leave you with an ear ringingsouvenir and it won’t be the only one….There is something for everyoneat a Donkey Show and pleeeaaase don't make us tell you we told you sonext week. I’ll be a donkey’s ass if this night doesn’t put a smile onour face. Icicles be damned there is some music to be had.
