JAQ’S NOTES:

Although we won’t be making the trip to St. Louis, Howdy and I are making the trip on March 6 to see one of the last performances by one of my favorite recorded/live bands, Slobberbone in Lincoln, NE. Yeah, they get shoved into that ever popular yet ambiguous Americana/Alt-Country genre, but they kick it in the ass with some hard drivin’ rock and Jess Barr’s screamin’ guitar. Couple that sound with the powerful and heartfelt lyrics of

Brent Best, that at the very least attack you with raw emotion and exceptional humor. You find yourself engrossed in every song on every one of their albums, and by the nature of this beast, mesmerized by their live sound. Brent has that envy inducing ability to take the mundane experience, such as the break-up, the impetus for the fan friendly “Gimme Back My Dog” (Everything You Thought Was Right Was Wrong Today ’01) and have your rolling on the ground with the lyrics “It was mine before you found me, it was mine before you’d hound me and bound me, ground me then pound me… like a dirty stray dog with no way home…Gimme Back My Dog.”  I was first taken with the boys when I heard the live version of “I’ll Be Dammed” (Barrel Chested ’97) that forces

us to live in the crescendo, rocks you like a baby right back down, then turns around and kicks you right back in the face as Brent wails “I’ll be dammed, if I’ll let you, be a part of some new start, and make me lose the will to leave this place.”  If you take one impromptu road trip to see some music this year, get on the Slobberbone train.

www.slobberbone.com

Well, since we are already having a moment of sadness over the demise of Slobberbone, I might as well put some bitter icing on the sour cake. For those of you who have not yet heard the news, Minneapolis band, The Jayhawks, have officially called it quits as well. Since their formation in 1985, they released five major label recordings with which

they leave us.

DI’S NOTES:

Circa 1975, dear dad sat me on his lap early one Saturday morning as Johnny Cash played through the speakers of our crusty old record player. I said to him, “Daddy, why do we listen to this every Saturday?” And I believe his exact was response was, “girly, that’s the way things need to be.” Fast forward three decades and I understand. I believe I simply got it from that day forward but it just keeps becoming more clear. Never has such a complex man spoke so wisely and clearly of God, Love and Murder…and trains. Join us at Davey’s on Friday night and tip a glass as some of Kansas City’s best will be reminding us once again why Cash is so important in Americana. And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention his beloved June, who we also lost in 2003, never has a woman loved her man more strongly and he honored her rightly in return. Thank you boys for putting this show together, no greater justice has ever been done!

As I sit here and write this, listening to a bit of Hank III, I’m kicking myself for making plans to go out of town this weekend. Like the Hanks that came before him, Hank III stands strong in his country crooning. There is no denying his lineage, he’s a dead ringer for his granddaddy Hank Williams Sr. But this won’t be any ordinary country show. Hank III and his band will at some point leave the country behind and deal you a punk showdown that will likely approach a full-on metal blow-out before the night is through. And don’t forget, your ticket stub will get you a discount down the street at Davey’s where Federation of Horsepower will complete your rockin’ night out. -di

Brave Combo @ DAVEY’S UPTOWN

On one of my drives to Lawrence, I happened to tune into NPR in time to hear a bit about this Denton, TX group who just walked away with a Grammy for their release “Let’s Kiss” in the category of “Best Polka Album”, which, by the way, is not the first Grammy to be handed to the Polka Kings of Texas.. Yes, pups, you read it correctly, Polka, Grammy’s and Davey’s. But this ain’t the Czech peasant dance music that initially comes to mind when we hear the word Polka. Brave Combo has much more of a punch, being described as “klezmer surf rock”, “moshpit polka”, and back in the late 70’s, when the band was beginning to hone their craft, they were branded “New Wave Polka”. Billboard describes their music as “world wise and unclassifiable”, which is right on outside of the fact that they are directly classified when it comes to winning Grammy’s. It seems they have no fear mixin’ whatever it takes with their polka to make the finest cocktail available, be it Latino, New Orleans Jazz,

Rock and Roll, Blues, and I think I even heard a little Ska in there. Definitely a band to make you yell, Hoy!, Arriba!, and Oompa!, and jump up and down like a child on a dozen Snickers bars. -jaq

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 20

Lust-R-Tones, Thee Fine Lines, and Trevor & Viv $2 @ FRED P. OTTS

Monday is President’s Day and another day off for the lucky ones, but Sunday will be a great night at P. Otts for everyone. Devin from the Lust-R-Tones gave us some insight into Thee Fine Lines, “a great garage band from Springfield, MO. Their sound is very reminiscent of Billy Childish and all of that “Medway-Garage” he started down in the south of England (Kent). Billy Childish has been cited both by Nirvana and The White Stripes as an influence, but Thee Fine Lines seem to approximate that man’s sound the best with their danceable 60’s influenced Trash-Pop.” Opening the evening, making a rare Kansas City appearance, will be Trevor & Viv of The Mersey Lads. We hear they have some new tunes to delight. Both the Lust-R-Tones and Thee Fine Lines will have new CDs available. Devin promises free CDs to those that come dressed as their favorite President.

Modest Mouse @ THE UPTOWN

Jesse Malin @ THE BOTTLENECK

Jesse is often linked with singer/songwriter/former Whiskeytown crooner Ryan Adams due to perhaps their songwriting style or their friendship.  Perhaps it is their collaborations (Ryan produced Jesse’s first solo album “The Fine Art of Self-Destruction”). Or maybe it’s that they both wear a “just got out of bed head” look. I have to admit, being an avid Whiskeytown/Ryan solo fan, this is what initially drove me to check out Mr. Malin. The link between the two sometimes lends one to believe that Malin was discovered by Ryan and perhaps taken under his wing. As the story goes, but who ever knows the actuality of the story, Ryan actually approached Malin during his day with his punk band D-Generation, which some of you might have seen open for KISS back in the 90’s.These days Jesse is most definitely breaking away from the comparisons and proving through his live performances and his new album “Heat” that he has his own leg to stand on. His solo sound, although still holding ont

o a touch of the punk roots, is much more introspective, focusing on lost love and pulling from influences such as Bruce Springsteen and Neil Young. So for those of you looking for an alternative to Modest Mouse, this is definitely a good bet for a Sunday night of live music.

JAQ’S NOTES:

The time is once again upon us when we can get out and support Kansas City’s own independent, non-commercial, radio station KKFI 90.1 FM by taking part in the KKFI Band Auction. Tune into KKFI February 22 February 27 to bid on a band to play your party or function. You can hit www.kkfi.org to get a list of participating bands/solo acts, and a schedule of bands and bidding times. Some of the bands/solo acts up for auction include The Grand Marquis, The Rumblejetts, The Silvermen, Kasey Rausch, and The Joe Roberts Band. The schedule is tentative at this time and we might even see some additional acts added for auction by next week.

I get unlimited amounts of enjoyment through the variety of programs offered on KKFI. The following are a few of my favorites.

“The Rockabilly Mood Swing” Friday nights (5pm to 7pm) w/ Lynn, Hepkat & Toodles, playing old country, rockabilly and punk-a-billy from artists like the Paladins, Tenderloin, Johnny Cash, and Dale Watson.

“Your Morning Buzz” with Wild Bill playing Rodney Crowell, Ray Charles, Jimmy Cliff, John Prine, Mavis Staples and John Lee Hooker.

“Retro Red-Eye Express” Saturday (10pm to 1am) throwing Squeeze, Blondie, The Smiths, David Bowie, They Might Be Giants, and Adam and the Ants.

“KC Spotlight Sessions” which features only local and regional artists, such as The Sound and the Fury, Stella Link and The Deep Thinkers.

And my ultimate fav, “The Official Rock N Roll Radio Show” with hosts Gary Cloud and Cody Wyoming, bringing us some straight on rock and roll from the likes of The Paybacks, The Safes, T-Rex, AC/DC, Federation of Horsepower, The Throttlers, Shotgun Idols and many many more local, regional and national acts that really get our motors running.

In addition to the shows that inspire me to “tune-in”, KKFI offers programs dedicated to punk rock, reggae, tejano, jam bands and more, which is a necessary alternative to most  commercial radio stations. It is a rare occasion that you find my dial tuned to any station other than KKFI or KCUR. This is why I urge you to check out what KKFI has to offer and throw a little love their way.

Yes, it is a week away before the auction kicks off, but I mention this excellent fund raising event because you can submit an advance bid by calling Bill @ (816) 931-3122,

Ext. 104 or heading to the home page at www.kkfi.org  and shooting over your bid via email. As far as I know, you can bid whatever amount you can afford. Even if you don’t win a band, you will still be doing a good deed and supporting our community radio.

DI’S NOTES:

Last night Jaq was over and we booked our tix to Austin for SXSW next month. Excited doesn’t begin to explain our mood about attending “the” music event of the year. I’ll be a newbie to the madness and I hope that my traveling companions are NOT gentle on me. After reviewing the line-up there won’t be any encouragement necessary. The Paybacks, Bobby Bare Jr., Death From Above 1979, Calexico, John Dee Graham, Robyn Hitchcock, Honky, Aimee Mann, The Kills, Lucero, M. Ward, The Raveonettes, Supagroup are just a few I’m hoping to catch. Congratulations to the Kansas City area bands that made the line-up. The Golden Republic, Ghosty, A. Graham and The Moment Band, Doris Henson, Rex Hobart & The Misery Boys, and Koufax. I’m sure you’ll do our city(s) proud. The rumors are starting to flow our way about shows that haven’t been announced that are almost too great to believe. It’s not too late to get that 21-day advance discounted airline ticket but hotels are going fast if you are fe

eling tempted. Let us know if you are going down, we’d love to meet up for a Sad Dog Happy Hour before the showssssssss.

This show is not for the easily embarrassed or the faint of heart but is for anyone out for some shock, amazement, and gut wrenching laughter. Then stick around for what our friend Roach calls the “sick and sexy sounds” of the 8-piece group “I”.

JAQ’S NOTES:

So there are these two extremely talented brothers from Te Awamutu, New Zealand, Tim Finn and Neil Finn (six years Tim’s junior). Let’s start with Tim. Tim, with Phil Judd, formed Split Enz in the late 70’s.  Split Enz was the first band from New Zealand to achieve a bit of world-wide recognition with their new wave/pop sound, wild

costumes and hair, theatrical live show and a little song called “I Got You” that had the 80’s kids singing along. Now, remember little brother Neil? Right. Well, Neil eventually joined Split Enz and Tim took a break a bit later to pursue a solo career, Neil took over as leader of band and shortly after decided to bring the Enz to an end with the farewell tour “Enz With A Bang”. (I thought that was cute!) So off Neil goes with another member of Split Enz, Paul Hester, to form Crowded House, which garnered absolute world wide fame and recognition with their 1988 self-titled debut and the tunes “Don’t Dream It’s Over”, “Better Be Home Soon”, and “World Where You Live”. Yes, they had this young lady, still in her teens, playing that cassette tape over and over with stars in her eyes. Ok, so where has Tim been?  He’s been off on a solo career, recorded a solo album “Escapade”, garnered a bit of success in Australia then decided to hop on the Crowded House train. With the brothers

back together, they put out, in my opinion, one of the best Crowded House recordings in the discography, the 1991 release “Woodface”. On this album, the brothers “properly” collaborated as writers, and the collaboration was a raging success. They continued making albums and enjoying the success of Crowded House throughout the 90’s. They were awarded OBE’s from the Queen of England in 1993 and enjoyed continued popularity throughout Europe, England, and of course, Australia and their home country New Zealand, everywhere but the United States. On November 24, 1996, Crowded House played their final performance at the Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia, to 100,000 fans, in a benefit for the Sydney Children’s Hospital Fund.

Now after many years, an album in which they collaborated, simply called “Finn” and a brand new album titled “Everyone Is Here” under their belt, they are back to the States to try to win our hearts once more. Looks like I am headed West to Lawrence next Thursday to finally see the brothers live and send them my love.

DI’S NOTES:

I recently joined Netflix and have been getting caught up on some video watching, it is winter after all. This week I viewed “Jandek on Corwood” (2003). A guilty pleasure of mine is celebrity/icon gossip and when it is out of my reach it just draws me in even more. Such is Jandek. I came across mention of this enigma some time ago, discussed in a piece on Kurt Cobain. The brief reference on his solitary existence got me intrigued so I hopped online and found one lone website. Since the release of this film many more websites have popped up, all attempting to explain the mystery behind the sound and the man. He released his first record “Ready for the House” in 1978 and over the past twenty-five years has released 31 more records, DIY, thru Corwood Industries, of which he is the sole proprietor. He is one of the most prolific artists of our time and has gone completely unrecognized by the masses. Why? His music is inaccessible and un-commercial. A voice and guitar, out of tune

, or is it? Sometimes a cappella, sometimes with percussion and on a few occasions, with accompanying vocal or player, he refuses to discuss or credit. He’s given one interview by phone and another by random chance that went without any discussion of the music or who Jandek is. Photographs of him are obscured and unreferenced. The documentary is one of the most interesting I’ve seen. The music is….eerie. It runs throughout the documentary and it is difficult stuff. What is more interesting is listening to the perceptions of fans, journalists and DJ’s speculating on his persona and sound. There is romanticism in his complete freedom of the machine and his appearance to not impress. Self-distributed from a PO Box in Houston, TX, much like his music he is completely non-representational of any standard.

Happy Birthday to Max the ever happy Sad Dog! Feb. 1 made him 2!
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 4
Lyle Lovett, John Hiatt, Guy Clark & Joe Ely @ UPTOWN THEATER
I gave ya’ the full scoop on this show in last week’s Sad Dog. This week I am just letting you know that this is a once in a lifetime chance to see a legendary all-star line-up of songwriters such as this. If you missed my tirad last week head to the websites and get a glimpse of what these cats have to offer. -jaq

The Afterparty, J. Ashley Miller and The Golden Calves, and Drakkar Sauna
@ THE BRICK
The Afterparty is listed in this weeks’ Kansas City Star Preview as a “must see band” and described as “desert country” music. They have enlisted backup singers bringing this once 5-piece to an 8-piece.
And then there is J. Ashley Miller, foot stompin’ and guitar slappin’, fun to see and great on the ears.
I was lucky enough to get sucked in by the charm that is Drakkar Sauna a few weeks back. This duo plays old-time country but not the kind we’re familiar with in this dimension. They harmonize as well as Simon and Garfunkel if they we’re portrayed in a David Lynch film. The lyrics and vocals are a highlight but with the collection of instruments they bring to the stage, guitar, mandolin, farfisa, tambourine, harmophone, kick-drum, and a few other things I didn’t recognize, they are solidly entertaining through the whole set. -di
Honeywagen w/ Cody Wyoming (Solo) 9pm @ THE CUP AND SAUCER
A couple of our KC favorites sharing a stage. You can’t beat that. Mr. Cody Wyoming is better than any jukebox. We’re not sure what he has in store, whether it be originals or covers, his repertoire is down right unbelievable in its mass. Honeywagen’s CD “Station Now” is wonderfully produced and their pop sound will surely fill the room down in the River Market tonight. Sounds like a great date night.

The only thing we can tell you about American Ruse, is that they have been compared to an American version of The Hellacopters, well that could be a very good thing. The Throttlers, after a few shows under their belt, are back in full force. New guitarist (Claes Lillig Parlay, Wasted Stacey), rounds out their familiar rev’d up heavy rock sound.

Pendergast, always a crowd pleaser and crowd rocker, and out for their first show with new bass player, Rich Burgess formerly of Hadocol. We had a chance to catch the southern rock meets KC indie rock sounds of Goodnight Daylight last week. Jay Magierowski has a melodic heart melting voice and the songwriting is right on. This is definitely a band to keep an eye on as they hone their sound.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 9
Asylum Street Spankers 8:30pm @ DAVEY’S UPTOWN
A few years back on one of my trips to Austin, TX, we popped into a Hamil On Trial show and discovered a man that goes down in the history pages of our SXSW excursions. This man goes by the name, Wammo! We purchased his CD “Faster Than The Speed of Suck” and have been entertained by this tale of a road trip with his girlfriend and their search for some worthy tunes coming across the AM radio. An argument ensues and they get caught in a bout of “You got your country in my rap, you got your rap in my country”. From there the ride takes you down a street of insane, bizarre, hilarious and sometimes dirty stories and adventures. Later I discovered that Wammo is just one member of this “gender defying” group from Austin that dips into “electrified psychobilly, straight up rock and roll and spoken word” sans amps or PA.. They pay tribute to the glories of the mullet and pay homage to the Queen of Rockabilly, Wanda Jackson, with their cover of “Funnel of Love” on the tribute album “Hard Head
ed Woman”. I don’t know exactly what to expect from these Austin pups but I am sure it will be entertaining and right up the alley for anyone looking for a spice out of the ordinary. -jaq

JAQ’S NOTES:
Hello Friends,
Well, I find myself commuting to Lawrence again this year to do the thing I love, bringing the music to the masses, and this I do through the Wakakarusa Music and Camping Festival 2005.
Yes, it’s back for its second year, and oh my, outside of writing to you in shameless self promotion, the line up is lookin’ good. Some of the gems making the trip to KS are Son Volt (saw the new line-up in St. Louis at the Mound City Music Festival and it is yummy), Neko Case (beautiful with the voice of an angel, how I’ve longed to see this lady live), The Gourds (Austin rockin’ bluegrass, long time fav o’ mine), Truckstop Honeymoon (New Orleans duo, endearing and hilarious, tellin’ the tale of real life through humor and grit), Split Lip Rayfield (driving punk rockin’ bluegrass, the last show of Wakarusa 2004 was Split Lip and goes down on my best shows ever list), and many more that are sure to entice you and get ya movin’ including the Jeff & Vida Band, Calexico, and the Hackensaw Boys. We are still working out the rest of the line-up, and as I can’t mention names, a few still to be announced will blow your socks off. What I can say is that I might flee the production trailer an
d run off to catch the show out front with the rest of you folks.
Early Bird Tickets go on sale Friday, February 11 @ 10:00 am. Head to www.wakarusafestival.com for more information on ticket sales and hotel packages.

DI’S NOTES:
Next Tuesday many bars across the nation will be adopting the holiday and throwing parties, not unlike they do for St. Patrick’s Day. As next Tuesday is Fat Tuesday, the final day of Carnival and the Christmas season and the last night of debauchery before the season of fasting and prayer. In any city you can pick up the weekly rag and see the listings but there is only one place to be, at the Crossroads Arts District (West 18th St.) in Kansas City. Last year, Mayor Kay Barnes graced the celebration to give the key to the city to non-local legends the Flaming Lips. And that was just the start of the fun. Floats, which last year included a 2-story bacon-making creation and yes, the bacon was tossed to the revelers below, and hundreds of festively dressed characters gather in the street. The fun doesn’t stop there my friends as the call will be made to hit your march as the party moves East on 18th St. in parade fashion to the street party’s 2nd location at 18th and Locust. What does
this have to do with music you ask? Well it is a party parade after all.
Tuesday 6-10pm on 18th St. (between Baltimore Ave. and Wyandotte St.)

RELEASES:
The Litigators “Look Out For The Bottom Line” on Wrath and Wroll Records.
We love it when we get to tell you all we have found another great local release.  “Look Out” fits the bill with five straight ahead, in your face, rock and roll tunes for just one little buck a song. This disc will most certainly get ya movin’ and dancin’ around the house.  “Look Out” is a must have as we move closer to spring and pull out those feel good, drivin’ around with the top down tunes.
You can purchase one of these gems at Recycled Sounds on Main or Music Exchange on Broadway.
