Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND !!!

FRIDAY, APRIL 29
The Kirk Rundstrom Band, Jeff and Vida Band, and Solagget @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
Kirk Rundstroms (Split Lip Rayfield) solo project has been ever evolving from the start.
I had a chance to chat with Kirk briefly today about how the sound has once again evolved, and I encourage you all to check em out. He describes the sound as a pop rock jazz explosion that is not for the weak hearted. The boys are a full-blown rock band with Colin Mahoney (Drums), Georgia Sutton (Piano), Sean Fanning (Bass), and Kirk Rundstom (Acoustic/Electric Guitar/Vocals). Yes folks, were getting some electric out of Rundstrom this time around. They will be playing songs off both of Kirk Rundstroms solo albums Blue China and Same Ugly Town as well as 32 new tunes thrown into the mix. I have been spending some quality time with Same Ugly Town and cant seem to get enough, especially the tune Abilene, which I have to slap in the player while Im starting up the car.
They will be joined by The Jeff and Vida Band (a straight-up bluegrass country duo) and Solaggat (3-piece instrumental rock band from Wichita). This night most definitely has a little rock and roll somethin for everyone! -jaq

Glenn Tillbrook & The Fluffers w/ Bob Walkenhorst @ THE HURRICANE
Glenn Tilbrook is 1/2 of the songwriting duo that made up the 80s pop/new wave band Squeeze. Tilbrook is joined by Bob Walkenhorst, lead singer and songwriter of Rainmakers. Both men will be shelling out tunes from their solo projects, but perhaps if were lucky, we might get to take a little journey down memory lane.

Power pop at its very finest. Their 2003 CD Station Wow continues to be frequently played here at Sad Dog HQ.

Les Fossoyeurs w/ Joey Skidmore, and Jazzbo @ MIKES TAVERN
Well.hmmmm...okay, here we go
The other night my friend Jay was telling me a bit about Les Fossoyeurs who via Paris France are playing KCMO twice this week. I gathered they had horns and lean toward ska so with interest peaked I set out on the World Wide Web to see what I could scrounge up. I was met with a language barrier, a first in Sad Dog history I do believe. Not trusting my high school French classes to pull me through on this one I copied a block of description I found on their website into an online French to English translator. Pups.I give you this. having begun with the vague alternative from the Eighties, the primary education punk-rock'n'roll of the beginnings took colors little by little. It kept aggressiveness and the engagement politique one and grew rich by ska influences, reggae, funk... and ball haversack. Today, concerts with donf with fishing and the smile (fic). Well good for them.
I think Ill bank on the possibility of some saucy accents and hope for the bonus of some good music. -di

Elvis Costello @ UPTOWN THEATRE
I think this one speaks for itself. Definitely worth the ticket price and the $10 beers at the Uptown. Elvis is currently touring on his latest release on Lost Highway Records, Delivery Man. On this release Elvis taps into Southern Americana sounds and is joined by queens of Americana music Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams. I received this album as a birthday gift last September. It remained on my list of favs for two weeks when it mysteriously disappeared, and unfortunately has not been replaced. Hmmmm, I think I am going to have to make a purchase tomorrow. This will be a hot show as Elvis does know how to pump it up. jaq

Tonight you can spend an entire night with this veteran Austin singer/songwriter. His music his difficult to categorize as he is a little rock, funk, pop, country, and folk. Bob puts on one heck of a show whether he is crooning a ballad or shelling out a naughty number by his big band the Scabs. He had great success with his first solo album Lonelyland and is now touring on his second solo release Im Good Now. In a recent review at Lawrence.com Bob sites the Bottleneck in Lawrence as his favorite place to play outside of Austin. We should make sure Bob leaves KC with a new favorite venue on his list.

JAQS NOTES:
This week I am urging you all to put aside your back-to-work-Monday-blues and head down to Blayneys for an Americana Monday. Whenever I rally and head down to the stone lined basement I end up wondering why I dont find myself bouncing down those steps every week. Theres no cover, drinks are cheap, its a blast, and it always makes you feel like youve stepped out of the same ol grind for a few hours. The Gaslights are guaranteed to shell out a rockin show and these folks have proven to be perfect hosts to a slew of Americana bands. Last week we popped in and took in the old country stylings of KCs own, Peckinpah. This week we get North Texas singer/songwriter Rodney Parker & the 50 Peso Reward, who has drawn comparisons to Slaid Cleaves, Jay Farrar, and Butch Hancock. Past bands to grace the stage for Americana Mondays include Mickey and the Motorcars, Pendergast, Buffalo Saints, The Rumblejetts, and Snakebite Orphans. All you Americana Music lovers, its time to take advantage of this gem of an eve!
Visit www.thegaslights.com for information on upcoming shows.

DIS NOTES:
Misbehavin on school nights. Theres nothing quite like that old familiar friend rebelliousness. Last night we decided to head to Lawrence to catch the Murphys Law, Supersuckers, and Reverend Horton Heat show at the Bottleneck. Lawrence has changed quite a bit since my days there in the early 90s but some things you can still count on. The ever so lovely Prairie Pale Ale at Free State Brewery was just the thing to start off the evening. After a couple tasty pints and a warm bowl of cheddar ale soup we made our way to the BNeck.
Murphys Law took the stage first and they would have been better off had the singer stopped talking and allowed the band to play some music. It seems crowd rousing and stage banter was the more important calling of the evening for these hardcore rowdies from NYC. I gather these boys do everything excessively so maybe they were right on cue. The Supersuckers pulled off a rockin and respectable show despite some major changes. Supersuckers were one man down as guitarist Dan Thunder Bolten has taken a brief leave to do a bout in rehab. I found it in good spirit that they carried on leaving stage left open for their struggling comrades anticipated return. Boltens absence wasnt the only difference. New drummer Dusty Watson (Agent Orange/Dick Dale) is only a few months on board but it looks like hes embracing the challenge of being in the Best Rock-n-Roll Band in the World just fine. Long time Sad Dog readers know I relinquished a 12-year Supersuckers boycott just under a year ago. Why I chose the Supersuckers as the target of my only =ever= grudge Ill never know. In hindsight, the initial infraction wasnt quite worthy of such a hefty chastisement on my part. Think they took notice of my Ill show you attitude? Likely not. Well cheers to me for letting go. Ill never miss them again when they roll through they simply give great show and have returned to the top of my favorites list. Ive seen Reverend Horton Heat more than one girl ever should in a life time so we decided to head back to KC in hopes of catching some of the show at the Brick. We arrived 20 minutes into Federation of Horsepowers set but we made a good decision in making the trek back. Heres a band that I grow to love more and more with each show. While I thought the size of the crowd would have caused a cavernous echo in the place the boys played a fierce set of hard driving rock-n-roll. I understand that it was a school night pups but if ever a KC rock band deserved a strong week night draw its the fellas of FOHP. Since a good nights sleep was already out of the question we remained and were rewarded for our brave attempt to meet last call. Dallas The Von Ehrics have been described as redneck metal, punktry, cowpunk metaltonk. If you like a lot of country in your punk and a lot of punk in your country they might be just your thing. Although they remain true to familiar country tales of booze, road and women theres nothing gentle about these boys that blend country melodies with punk rock furor.
It was one of those great nights for music and Im glad I was there. But now, if youll excuse me, sleep calls..

JAQS NOTES:
Somewhere between punk and rockabilly lies Sailor Rock, a name Throw Rag created to describe their sound. Now I say, thats right up my alley. See, the thing is, I just caught wind of these Salton Sea, CA boys and feel like Ive been missing out on something. Truth be told, I still feel like I am missing something. I stumbled upon Throw Rag because I noticed that Goodnight Daylight was playing at Mikes. Well, of course I am going to catch GD. Then I catch the buzz that Throw Rag just hopped off of a stint with Queens of the Stone Age, which perked my ears right up. At that point the investigation took off. Soon I discovered that they have had the privilege of playing with quite a distinguished and varied group of artists, so distinguished that I am half-way convinced this simply one heck of a wish list. The list includes Willie Nelson, Social Distortion, X, The Damned, Hank III, The Supersuckers, Reverend Horton Heat, The Blasters, The Breeders, Southern Culture on the Skids, and Mike Watt. Again, right up my alley. Oh, and apparently frontman/vocalist Captain Sean-Doe is the 1/2 brother to actor Crispin Glover. Well, the only thing I could do from here is go visit the friendly and informative land of iTunes in hopes of having a listen. Yep, I like it! Ok, ok, ok, ok!!!!!! How is it that these guys are playing the smallest venue in KC? Dont get me wrong, I dig Mikes Tavern, but it is small. So now I am obsessed with this band, determined to see them, have no idea how we are all going to fit into the joint, and most importantly, how I am going to hang in there without a fit of claustrophobia taking me over and sending me running out the front door gasping for air. I first must take in some Roller Derby, but straight after its down to Mikes to give it a shot. Give me the goods pups! Are the Throw Rags going to meet my expectations or even come close? Give me the skinny! I need the dirt! Well, at the very least the night might inspire another great tale to tell next week.

DIS NOTES:
Steve Poltz, Wednesday, April 20 @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
Well I think we have just about covered Steve in the last few editions of Sad Dog but since I cant seem to get last nights show out of my head Ill spew it here. This San Diego singer/songwriter and his sidekick Stinky (both formerly of The Rugburns) are the most entertaining show to come through these parts in some time. The title of singer/songwriter can scare some off but the comedy of Steves show and his whimsical songwriting has made me a fan for life. Steve on acoustic and Stinky on the cardboard box were intoxicating and left me grinning ear to ear for three solid hours. Stinky played the box with brushes for most of the set but at one point grabbed his sticks and beat on the monitors, Steves belt buckle and Daveys floor all the way back to the mens bathroom where in left the door open for the crowd to hear him wailing on the porcelain. The most unique thing about this tour is that they are recording all the shows and fans get to buy the CD at the end of the night. I got mine, a 3 disc set opposed to the planned 2.they just didnt seem to want to stop playing. Dont miss him the next time he rolls through.

Among these fabulous friends you will find, Grant Lee Phillips, Dave Alvin, and Neko Case, who provides the perfect voice for a duet on Highway 5 (a song co-written with Exene Cervenka). Unfortunately I seriously doubt we will be catching any of these folks with him at The Farm. I dont have confirmation if he is back solo or with a band. I do know that Tucsons Nick Luca (collaborations include Calexico, Neko Case, Richard Buckner) has been known to accompany Doe on occasion. Either way, John Doe is a man to be seen. Oh, Sweet Home Alabama! Taking the cue from their predecessors, these southern rockers from Muscle Shoals Alabama (The Hit Recording Capital of the World) certainly have what it takes to carry on the musical tradition of Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers Band and the Marshall Tucker Band. Their 2004 release The Dirty South tells the tales of livin in North Alabama, of tornadoes hitting their hometown, drinkin moonshine, NASA, and Sheriff Buford Pusser, and the lyrics hit you as hard as that southern sound.

Link Wray w/ The Rumblejetts @ KNUCKLEHEADS
7pm (doors open at 6pm), $15 advance / $12 DOS
Im not sure we even need to mention this show this week because I think everyone I know is going. Learning bottleneck guitar as a child, it wasnt until after returning from the Korean War and told not to sing after the loss of a lung due to tuberculosis that Wray developed his style, a slow drag across distorted strings in a simple chord progression. Embraced by teens with his 1958 release Rumble, it became a personal mission of many to get it banned from the airwaves as too suggestive and likely to cause juvenile delinquency. Not bad for an instrumental. Born in 1929, influential to many guitar greats and the focus of a petition drive for induction into the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame, Id say were pretty lucky to have him here in ole KC. Get there early pups if you want to get in the door to catch this legendary rock guitarist often hailed as the godfather of distortion.

JAQS NOTES:
In the year that weve been writing Sad Dog, this is the first time I have dedicated my notes to the same artist. But I felt compelled to tell you a bit about Steve Poltz and urge you to make it to Daveys Uptown on Wednesday night. I had the privilege of working with this San Diego based singer/songwriter last year at the Wakarusa Festival. I have been waiting for the opportunity to just kick back and enjoy him without work on my mind. He is witty and funny, with an infectious personality that makes you want to kidnap him and spend the day goofing off (yes, I stole this line from the last time I wrote about him, but it is worth repeating). Steve presents himself as a hopeless optimist with the talent to revel in the oddities of life. When we caught him in Austin a few weeks ago he was playing with a fellow affectionately known as Stinky. I wasnt close enough to catch a whiff so I cant really say how he got the name. All I know is he can beat and brush a cardboard box like no other percussionist I have ever witnessed and I can only hope that he will be in the mix. No matter how Steve brings it, solo or with compadres, he is a true pleasure and is guaranteed to leave you with a smile that will last a week. jaq

DIS NOTES:
The Litigators, The Forty-Fives, and The Sixteens, 4/8/05 @ THE BRICK
I dont know why everyone complains about the music on the airwaves. Its so easy not to listen. Head to a show, hear it live, pick up a CD, and take home some memories for crying out loud. Choose your music.
I picked up the first CD for my Spring collection last Friday night with the latest offering by The Forty- Fives, High Life High Volume (Yep Roc Records 2004). And if the Sixteens would have had a CD I would have bought that too.
Theres no doubt the intrigue behind the band in the evenings opening slot. Amy, formerly of Molotov Grasshopper and now of KCs The Sixteens, has one of the strongest rock voices to hit my ears. Someday that one there will inspire young girls everywhere to give it a go. Im glad the crowd was healthy early on because thats a band not to be missed.
Ahand The Forty-Fives, the boys from Atlanta werent without inspirationboys and girls getting friendly, fierce hip-shake, and they have likely caused a run on go-go boots in the greater KC Metro area. Fans of KCs Lust-r-Tones pick up their CD, place it in player, hit shuffle but dont hurt yourselves. Lucky for us, and our show going companions, we escaped the swinging mic of Jeremiah when The Litigators held court. Glory rock, hell fire and dog treats, we thought we were out for a nice little evening with friends but damn if the boys and girls on stage last Friday night didnt go and cause a full-on rock-n-roll hip shake! Im dubbing this the first tear up night of The Rock-n-Rock Spring of 05. Its gonna be a good one.

Pups No More!

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND !!!

We’re Big Dogs Now! -- This week proves to be a special week here at Sad Dog HQ, as Friday, April 8, 2005 marks our 1-Year Anniversary! It was just one year ago that we sat at Harry’s Country Club drinking PBR’s discussing what we could give back to this music community that has shown us so many good times over the years. It was shortly after that we sat down with an email list of 25 people and sent out our very first issue of what would become a weekly date with you all. Looking back at our first issue, it becomes very clear why we were so inspired to share the love. April 8, 2004, the shows of the week were Cody Wyoming and The Golden Hearted Whores, Honeywagen, Federation of Horsepower, Texas Meat Purveyors, The Gaslights, Supagroup, The Throttlers, Hydraphader, Wyco Lowriders, Hayseed Dixie, The Hearers, The Spiders, The Shotgun Idols, and The Flatlanders. Wouldn’t it be great if we could bottle that week and take a nip on occasion? In just a year our readership has grown to 400+

, we have had many more amazing weeks, and we live to tell the tales. Thank you to all of the bands who have inspired us, entertained us, and given us a multitude of stories. Thank you to all of our readers who have supported us and let us know our time and energy spent writing the good word on rock-n-roll has not gone unnoticed.

So with that being said, let the week of celebration begin, as we head into our second year with our tails waggin’.

FRIDAY, APRIL 8

The Litigators, The Forty Fives, and The Sixteens @ THE BRICK

Let this serve as your subpoena to appear in rock-n-roll court. There will be no time for rebuttals but lucky for you The Litigators are on your team. They bring a strong argument with enough energy to make Johnny Cochran roll in his grave. What a great pairing The Brick has going on tonight with another strong KC representation by The Sixteens, who will undoubtedly lay down a worthy defense.  Filling out the line-up, Atlanta’s garage rock hip shakers, The Forty Fives. There will not be any standing still, and your sentence will be given when all the rock-n-roll arguments have been heard.

Proceeds from the sale of CD’s and DVD’s will be donated to the Tsunami Relief and Rebuilding Efforts of CARE, Unicef, and the American Red Cross.

Visit your local music store or www.texasroadhouse.com.

Martha Wainwright self titled debut out April 12

I raved about her the week we got back from SXSW. She was my ultimate surprise and blew me away with her live performance. The next day I purchased her 5-song debut EP and then caught wind that soon the full-length album would grace the record store shelves. Thankfully that time has come as I am ready for more. Here’s just a bit of what I had to say about her a couple of weeks ago:

“She can pour out her soul as if she's in pain, but somehow still holds onto an innocent grin that smacks of the cat that ate the canary. She has a unique style that leaves you feeling refreshed and relieved that in a time with so many musical influences someone can actually pave her own path and shell out a sound not heard before”. Trust me….-jaq

THEATER

Hedwig & The Angry Inch March 25 April 10 @ JUST OFF BROADWAY THEATRE, Call 816.224.3004 for more info

WOW! Being a huge fan of the film, and not fortunate to have seen the NYC stage production, I entered Just Off Broadway Theatre last Saturday evening both excited to see this story brought to life on stage, and fearful that I would leave terribly disappointed. John Cameron Mitchell (writer, director, and star of the film and original stage production) sets a standard of performance perfection that not many would want to attempt to duplicate. That being said, Steven Eubank & Josh Minnis get a standing ovation for their adaptation of this musical and their casting of Justin Van Pelt as Hedwig herself. Van Pelt had me hooked from his first five minutes on stage and continued to have me on the edge of my seat with his portrayal of this complicated character. He, without a doubt, played Hedwig like he was meant for the role. And while he stayed true to the groundwork laid down by John Cameron, he brought his own style to the role, playing it with intense emotion, humor, and raw sex appeal

. The rest of the cast fully complimented Van Pelt’s performance leaving no gaps in the production. I can say that when the show came to an end we were all on our feet and making plans to take in another night of Hedwig and the Angry Inch before the run comes to an end. I urge you do the same. -jaq

DI’S NOTES:

Yep pups, we’ve come upon that time of year when bands hit the road for Spring tours. Boy, oh boy, oh boy how I love, love, love this time of year! God love ‘em, those brave souls that track through winter’s wrath bringing the joy, and thanks to the local boys and girls that keep it alive night after night through the cold months. But I love this time of year when choices get tougher and our lil’ ole’ music community becomes a bit more saturated. By the looks of the calendar above, things are right on track. Warmer weather will start to bring out those familiar faces that have been hunkered down and friends will start to gather into the wee hours for a hootenanny when the shows are over and you just don’t wanna go home. This week is loaded for rock-n-roll bear, let the season begin!

But before we do, there are some Spring tasks at hand. Let’s forget the kind of Spring cleaning mama did, let’s dust off that stack of CD’s, you know the ones...the ones that aren’t quite year-around companions but come those warm months you drag ‘em out, grab a cold beverage and head to the porch or lengthen your drive a bit with windows down. Ah, the good life…

Dusting off:

Jimmy Cliff “Harder They Come”

Lauryn Hill “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill”

Parlay “Border Scum”

Alejandro Escovedo “Burbonitus Blues”

My Bloody Valentine “Loveless”

Tom Petty “Full Moon Fever”

Buena Vista Social Club “Buena Vista Social Club”

Chickasaw Mudd Puppies “8 Track Stomp”

Old 97’s “Satellite Rides”

The Thrills “So Much For the City”

And of course anything by Marley, Creedance, INXS, The Babys and Skynyrd.

JAQ’S NOTES:

I was at the Hen House this evening buying a lil’ something for dinner. I’m pushin’ my cart through the dairy section when I hear Aretha Franklin’s “Think” come over the store stereo. Well, Aretha ALWAYS gets me moving, and the next thing I know I’m kind of shakin’ my butt and realize I have a grocery cart strut goin’ on. Normally I would catch myself doing this, get a bit embarrassed then resume my normal shopping gait. Not this time. I just kept the strut going and proceeded on to the frozen dessert section. As I turned the corner, I caught a woman with her head in the freezer, shakin’ her butt, and one-uping me by singing out loud, “You better think, think about what you’re trying to do to me, yeah, yeah, think”! My guess is that normally she would be a bit embarrassed at my catching her belting out Aretha in the frozen dessert section, but NO. She did a pivot and strutted down the aisle still singing out loud. At that moment I realized, “Spring Has Sprung”. When I got home, I dec

ided I needed to pull out those spring/summer CD’s and start playing them LOUD, in hopes that I might chase away the chill and usher in the sun! Here’s a glimpse of what you might hear blasting out of my windows.

Lucinda Williams “World Without Tears”

Chuck Prophet “No Other Love”, In particular track 9 (Summertime Thing)

Los Super Seven “Canto”

AC/DC “Highway to Hell”

Old 97’s “Satellite Rides”

Supersuckers “How the Supersuckers Became The Greatest Rock and Roll Band…”

Dwight Yoakam “Tomorrow’s Sounds Today”

The Rolling Stones “Sticky Fingers”

The Black Crowes “Shake Your Money Maker”

Rod Stewart “Greatest Hits”

James Apollo w/ Goodnight Daylight @ THE BRICK

Man, when it rains it pours. I have been a bit “road worn and weary”, battling a cold with a mix of allergies. As I am finally starting to feel better I am thrown into a quandary as to where I will be spending my Saturday eve. Sure that my evening would be spent at Davey’s, I now see that I will be traveling to a variety of venues as I must see my

new favorite KC band Goodnight Daylight. I got my paws on a bit of their recorded material and haven’t been able to take it out of the ol’ CD player since. For all intensive purposes, Goodnight Daylight has been my traveling companion on my drives to Lawrence the past couple of months. Finally I am in town and free as a bird to check em’ out live again! And after catching a bit of James Apollo from Minneapolis via his website, I am left thinking I’m going to have to stick around to check out the man described as “a savage purveyor of root-rock-n-roll revelry”. To all beware, you will most likely find me everywhere. -jaq

Steve Earle w/ Allison Moorer @ LIBERTY HALL

So much to say and so little room. Steve Earle, has lead a life of ups, downs and excess.  This Texas born, country rocker, singer/songwriter, rebel, and revolutionary kicked the term "folk rock" in the rear and helped pave the musical highway for what we now call, for better or for worse, "alt-country". An 8th grade drop-out, he took to music and began honing his craft with the likes of Guy Clark, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Townes Van Zandt. He battled a long-term addiction to heroin that took him to rock bottom and ended up handing him a 4-month stay at the county jail. He fought his way back from the bottom and continues to put out one great album after another. Political and controversial, he’s raised the hairs on the necks of many and endured much criticism with his 2002 release “Jerusalem”. He has a punk rock sensibility that drives him to sing out against the government and lend a voice to those who are silenced. Through it all, he has delivered an amazing catalogue of music to do

cument the journey and was awarded a Grammy this year for "Best Contemporary Folk Album" for his release "The Revolution Starts...Now".

Toots and the Maytals @ THE BOTTLENECK

Toots is considered "one of the true architects of reggae" and often referred to as the "Creator" of Reggae. Formed in the early 60's, the sound of Toots and the Maytals emerged from a mixture of ska, rock-steady and jazz, with Toots developing his song style from soul (Ray Charles, Otis Redding) and gospel. The music of Toots and the

Maytals has inspired musicians from varied genres such as rock, punk, blues and hip hop. In 2004, their release "True Love" received a Grammy for Reggae Album of the Year. Guest appearances on the album include, Bunny Wailer, Marcia Griffiths, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, The Roots and No Doubt. They were featured in film "The Harder They Come" which means they are part of what is one of the all-time

best soundtracks to date. And check this out. Their 1968 tune "Do The Reggay" is credited with giving the genre its name. Wow! And you have the chance to catch these cats at a little venue called the Bottleneck pups!

RELEASES:

April 5th Supersuckers, “Devil’s Food”

Last summer I relinquished my 12-year boycott on this band (check your Sad Dog archives for the full skinny), thanks to some strong-arming from friends smarter than me. 10 months later I’m eagerly awaiting the release of “Devil’s Food”. Much to the chagrin of Supersuckers’ collectors out there, “Devil’s Food” contains a collection of most recent hard to find, out of print and previously unavailable singles as well as some never before released demos and country versions of their most popular rock crowd pleasers. I’ll be picking it up Tuesday. I think they say…. “eatin’ crow”? -di

JAQ’S NOTES:

As I mentioned earlier, I've been chillin' like a villain due to the spring cold in my head and a desperate need for some downtime after my trip south. I am getting geared up for shows this weekend and will be running around like Max at the dog park trying to decide on which musical bottom I will stick my nose. But for now, since I am still a bit groggy and hopped up on cold medicine, the couch is calling my name and I am off to settle in with my latest Netflix order "Tenacious D: Complete Masterworks: For Fans: Disc 1" and "School of Rock". See you this weekend!

DI’S NOTES:

First Bootlegger’s Union Show, March 26, DAVEY’S UPTOWN

Joe Roberts Trio, Yellow No. 5, Johnny Switchblade & The KC Crooners, John Nash Band, and Jon Stubblefield

If we start handing out stamps of approval, purple hearts, or gold stars here at Sad Dog HQ I’m giving the first one to Bill “Roach” Sundahl of SOL Productions. If you’ve been to a Donkey Show you have this guy and his lovely girl Wende to thank. Last week he joined forces with Jody Hawkins (Rockabilly Prom, Punk vs. Rockabilly) and threw what I hope is the first of many Bootlegger’s Union shows. Aside from seeing Roach and Jon Stubblefield acoustic on the bar room stage, the stand out for me, was Yellow No. 5. They’ve come onto our radar a bit but this was the first time I caught their live show. While I’m always hesitant to draw comparisons when describing music, this time it is just undeniable. Fans of Old 97’s, prior to their latest release and the Rhett Miller solo fiasco, will find a refreshing and local new found friend in Yellow No. 5. Easy on the eyes, down right fun and danceable at first crack their show will have me coming back again. Pick up their 2004 release “Mud Road

Superstars” to introduce yourself. One of the tracks is driving me a bit crazy with a mandolin melody that sounds exactly like the ring on my cell phone at same pitch, but I’ll learn. It’s infectious and will be a nice play as you open your windows and start feeling Spring.
