Lift a Leg

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND !!!

Welcome to summer pups! Its gonna be a rockin hot one!
Oh secrets we can keep. All in due time but lets start it off with the much too absent:

SAD DOG TRIVIA!!!!!!!
Many thanks to Mikes Tavern for bringing us a 3-day Memorial Day Weekend Rock and Roll Cookout stuffed with an exceptional line-up of KC bands. We had the pleasure of taking in Throw Rag w/ Goodnight Daylight there a few weeks ago and it is one fun venue to see the rock. In addition to giving us the rock, they are also throwing in free entry +1 to be up close and personal to Helvis, The Ramalamas, Seconds from Disaster, Last Call Girls, and The Sixteens, Saturday, May 28 to the first Sad Dog to email the answer of the following Sad Dog Trivia question.

Robbie Fulks, Solagget, and Kirk Rundstrom Band @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
Bloodshot artist, singer/songwriter/bad-ass guitarist Robbie Fulks will be gracing, yes gracing, that little stage on Main in support of his new album "Georgia Hard", released May 17 on Yep Roc Records. Here's a man that is difficult to place in one genre as he can shell out the honky-tonk and bluegrass as well as some power pop without missing a beat. He delivers honesty through humor and has the conviction to right out speak his mind. Visit the Recent News section on his website where he shares stories such as "The Worst Gig I Ever Had", and "Appreciation: Lucinda Williams" proving to have quite a talent with the written word as well .He is joined by the pop, rock, jazz, bluegrass and country combo of the Kirk Rundstrom Band, along with the instrumental sounds of Solagget.

Pendergast @ FRED P. OTTS
A few years back I found myself at Daveys Uptown =imagine that=. I believe
The Gaslights and Pembertons (Manhattan, KS) were on the bill with Pendergast. It didnt matter that I wasnt yet too familiar with any of the bands.that one fine boy I wanted to get to know was there and I was saddled up next to him enjoying the conversation. Despite the exchange of sweet flirtation and the solid whiskey pour my favorite bartender Mokie had served up I was compelled to move stage front. I dont remember the song and I dont remember the conversation I left, I do remember that it was one of the rare times Ive been quite so moved to redirect my attention with such conviction. 2+ years later and Pendergast is one of the KC bands I rarely miss. Last year the boys released Truth About Saturday Night. The truth is I gave the CD a couple listens and set it aside. Pendergast is one of those bands I came to know through their live performance and something about the CD left me yearning. This Spring, as we opened the windows and set up the porch for weather induced socializing, I found myself slipping it into the old changer. Boy howdy, it all became clear. Initially I was a bit too intimate with their live show to give the CD a healthy listen. Now that those nights at Daveys with Pendergast have become like a well trusted friend the CD has become something unto itself. If you grew up in the Midwest this is music of the heartland. If you love roots rock-n-roll get out and meet your self a new friend in Pendergast. You have two chances this weekend set your summer off correctly. Go to the show, buy the CD and kick back with that dark stained water. -di

TUESDAY, MAY 31
DJ Stagger @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
7-9pmish
Long time Sad Dog readers will have noticed the absence of music related activity in Kansas City on Tuesday nights. DJ Stagger is igniting Tuesdays once again by spinnin rock-n-roll, punk, country and soul at Daveys Uptown.
Proclamation: We here by extinguish Tuesdays as a day of rest. The weather is warm, hop on your feet, skateboard, bicycle or fashionable ride of your choosing, call your friends and congregate in one fell swoop upon the corner of 34th and Main for a frosty one on Tuesdaysthe loneliest day of all. Rightokay so maybe a bit dramatic for an evening without real instruments but Ive always hated this empty spot on our calendar.

The Fucking Champs, Zombi, and Boy Jazz @ THE BOTTLENECK
Wowee, I forgot about The Fucking Champs (San Francisco). I caught them a few years ago at Minneapolis 7th St. Entry with a young stellar band, Drunk Horse (Seattle).
Who needs a bass? Set up with two guitars and a drummer The Fucking Champs approach metal with composed due diligence. Expect something fresh at this show. There is no semblance to familiar or retro. Mostly instrumental but in the way that doesnt make you miss the vocal mics. -di

THURSDAY, JUNE 2
The Dears @ THE BOTTLENECK
Heres a band that had some hype about em as we rolled into SXSW this year. We caught them at a Waterloo Records in-store and I bought their recent release
No Cities Left. Hailing from Montreal and experiencing elevated recognition in Europe they seem to be escaping most American music critics pigeon-hole-in. Something about this band takes me back to the day when The Smiths, Cure, Bauhaus, Alphaville and Roxy Music were my ever present soundtrack. All that being said, No Cities Left flows as if it should be the soundtrack to some recent femme fatal film noir. -di

RELEASES:
May 24, 2005 Lucero "Nobody's Darlings", Liberty and Lament Records
I most certainly do realize that I mentioned this release last week, but, damn!!!!, it is well worth a second mention. Last week I did not have it in my paws, but oh sweet gods of rock, thank you for delivering this one. The Memphis boys are back with their mix of country, rock and punk...and back with a vengeance. It's a good sign when the first song on the album has you smiling, screaming, and driving way too fast! I just picked it up Tuesday, and I am devouring every song on the release as if I am musically emaciated and just can't fill the void fast enough. I knew from the first lick that it wouldn't leave my side for quite some time. It's that disc that compels you to always start from the beginning and not skip a single moment till the end. -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
On one thoroughly enjoyable trip to Recycled Sounds this week I picked up The Afterparty's 2004 self-titled release. As I hit the new release bin it seemed to jump into my hands and was the first in the stack that I carried with me through the store. All the while, the music playing in the store was definitely striking my interest. While there, I had every intention of picking up the new Ryan Adams & The Cardinals disc, and kept wondering if it was that playing. (Once again, for those of you who just love to hate Ryan, my apologies but I am a fan, and very willing to have stones thrown in my direction. Life has taught me how to duck.) The thing was, it sounded much more like Whiskeytown, Ryan's alt-country band prior to breaking out solo). And with the exception of his first two solo releases "Heartbreaker" and "Gold", Whiskeytown is what made me a fan in the first place. Ok, I seem to have gotten off track. So, moving on. As you have most likely guessed, little did I know at the time, but the sounds filling the record store were the sweet sounds of The Afterparty. Ever eager to hear what would soon be a new gem to add to the collection, I threw it in the CD player and spent a half-hour driving home in what should have taken 5 minutes. Listening to my new purchase, another familiar sound kept leaping to my ears. It was the sound of Gram Parson's and the Flying Burrito Brothers. Having never seen The Afterparty live, it seemed quite fitting that once I did they would all be donning sequined Nudie suits after emerging from Burrito Manor. What might initially seem like an odd mix of comparisons, Whiskeytown and The Flying Burrito Brothers, really isn't such a far stretch considering most any band falling into that alt-country genre has spent quality time with, or has been heavily influenced by, the songs of Gram Parsons. Keep in mind these comparisons I draw come from first impressions. And this is the story of my first moments with The Afterparty. I did pick up the disc with a stack of 6 other releases, all of which have been shuffled in and out of the player since Tuesday scrambling for equal air-time. The Afterparty, Danny Fischer (vocals, guitar), Dave Regnier (vocals, guitar), Sarah Carpenter (vocals), Chris Devictor (bass), Paul Andrews (drums), and Josh Mobley (piano, rhodes, and vocals), is certainly throwing out a unique and welcomed sound to the KC music scene. And, I say with authority, if you are a fan of the Americana music, run, not walk, to Davey's Uptown on Saturday night and check these folks out for yourself. And don't forget your Nudie Suit. jaq
To The Afterparty: In this day and age when so many want to stuff Ryan into a sock, I must hope that you take this comparison as praise

DIS NOTES:
Its all about honesty this week. Im a rock-n-roll girl who chooses to visit the country lane from time to time. I was bred on the genres, I suffered my adolescents with rock as my faithful companion and revisited the country roots my family reared me on when I grew a brain in my mid-20s. As with any mixed blood one wanders. Ive done my time with many derivatives, but country and rock are like two siblingsyou love it cuz its in your blood. But last week I paid a visit to my indie cousin. Like any family, I have my favorites spread here to there but its not often I find myself in their company. Last Saturday night, after beating my dear friend Cody at pop culture trivia (eat it sucka), we headed down to The Brick to check out the Dandercroft Showcase. Timing has never been better. We made it just in time to see Bacon Shoe, featuring John Bersuch aka Lethal D, and John Ferguson aka Toine hype man extraordinaire! While the indie reference could be argued on this dynamic duo I know where they come from and they are rooted in indie by their shear innovative efforts (Dandercroft Music Zine and Band Scramble respectively) in Kansas City music culture. Holy hell, rap-magic-spectacular! I didnt know they had it in em. Bacon Shoe is the funniest damn thing Ive seen in a long time and they do it well. Lyrics so raunchy you might find yourself turning it down in your own company. Gracefully followed by Anvil Chorus, I believe this band briefly channeled My Bloody Valentine and thats enough to bring me back next time. However, this is a band that will take me some time to get to know, kind of like a third cousin, but the relationship is off to a fantastic start. What Ive come to learn this week is, like with any family, KC local live music is vast and its good to go a-visitingyou are bound to be entertained by something refreshing.

JAQS NOTES:
THE STONES ARE ON TOUR!!! So far I have not heard mention of a KC date. It seems the closest they are getting to our fair city is a Soldier Field gig in Chicago, IL (9-10-05). Tickets for this date go on sale May 21. I might have to sell an organ to afford a prime seat, so currently I am trying to decide which organ I can live without. Being as its very close to my birthday, I would much prefer to receive tickets as a gift. Hint. Hint. All I know is that I am an addict and in a time when ticket prices are flying through the roof, one must be very choosy. This one cant be missed. I have always been a huge fan. I saw them, as a young pup, on what I believe was the Steel Wheels Tour at Arrowhead. It took me two hours to find my car after the show ended, so its no shocker that I cant remember the name of the tour. In fact, I think I bumped into a few of you searching for your cars as well. I road tripped with my buddy Pete to Columbus, OH for the Bridges to Babylon Tour. Pete was ordained a Saint for his patience and ability to ride in a car with me, for what seemed like endless hours of driving, without kicking me to the curb. There was a Kemper Arena show in there somewhere. That was the show they decided to loose the pyrotechnics and gigantic Honky Tonk Women, and strip it down garage band style. I even toured with them briefly as a merchandise seller on the Voodoo Lounge Tour. Always a band to pick a bizarre combination of opening acts (past acts being Living Color, Guns and Roses, Lenny Kravitz, and Bryan Adams), it seems we might see the Black Eyed Peas, Maroon 5, Les Trois Accords, Pearl Jam and the John Mayer Trio supporting them on this tour. Hmmm. Interesting? So, who is in for a trip to see the Rolling Stones? My only piece of advice for takers of this invitation, Plan to fly.

Mike Ireland and the Holler 9pm @ HARRYS COUNTRY CLUB (112 Missouri Ave.)
Every second Saturday of the month youll find Mike and the Holler outside on the patio at Harrys Country Club. As this was the spot Sad Dog was conceived (over a few PBRs in very small chilled glasses), we tend to have a soft spot in our heart for this little city honky-tonk. Offering a great view of the shimmering buildings of downtown, a killer jukebox (filled with the sweet sounds of Hank, Johnny, Patsy, Waylon, and Willie), a very hospitable staff, and now, the sweet country sounds of Mike Ireland and the Holler, Harrys downtown patio is the place to cool off in the months of summer.

Looks like another hot night at Blayneys. This week John Stubblefield will be pouring out his brand of honky-tonk. I have had the pleasure of Johns company the last few weeks, as he has been one of the crew learnin the ropes on the Official Rock and Roll Radio Show. We all bring in our playlist of the week and John never fails to add a little country to our rock with the likes of Waylon, Billy Joe Shaver, James McMurtry, and Steve Earle. I havent had a chance to check out Stubblefield yet, but if his influences are any indication of his sound, I am there already. Thank you again to The Gaslights, who are our ever lovin hosts of the eve and never fail to kick out one heck of a show. -jaq

Throw Rag w/ Cocknoose @ REPLAY LOUNGE (Lawrence, KS)
If you missed Throw Rag at Mikes Tavern last month, were sorry about that, but heres another chance. They were fresh off a Queens of the Stone Age tour when we caught them but hell they sure didnt seem too weary for it. While Im a QOTSA fan these boys bring a show and sound that is much more fierce. Theyve adopted the moniker Sailor Rock to name their sound. Its okay, we didnt know what it meant either. They hail from Salton Sea, CA which may be the reason this punk outfit chose it. Looking a little bit rockabilly at first sight, dont be fooled, theres nothing to it when it comes to their show. Five boys onstage, two trading off vocals, means no lack of energy when these boys hit these parts again. -di

JAQS NOTES:
2nd Annual North Texas Rock Rally, June 15-17, 2005, Coyote, TX (In Northlake, TX)
I have been hearing about this festival, and have certainly been intrigued, being that I have always had a side to me that dreams of being a biker chick. I never really gave it much more than a thought due to the fact that I really dont like big festivals. A bit ironic considering I pay the bills by coordinating festivals. However, all of that changed when I heard that our own Federation of Horsepower is on The North Texas Rock Rally bill.
Well, I love the Federation boys, so I was compelled to due a little investigating into this shindig that prides itself on being the Largest Party in North Texas, and puts itself in a category with Sturgis and Daytona (the two most well-known bike rallys in the country). Their motto is Ride HardGet AttitudeLive Free, and the headliners are Ted Nugent, David Allen Coe, Jackyl, Warrant, Blackfoot, Blackberry Smoke, Maylee Thomas, and Back In Black (a band that reproduces an AC/DC concert performance), just to name a few. Event sponsors include Hooters, Loco Cycles, Dawgs and Hawgs, and Zippo The Official Lighter of NTRR. I can only imagine that when you enter the gates you prepare yourself for a weekend of anything goes and those brave enough to bare it all (which I am sure the list is long), Do! You can choose to check yourself into a hotel or dive right in and set up camp. Either way this should prove to be one helluva weekend. So for those of you whose ears have perked up and are formulating ideas of headin to North Texas to support one of our favorite rock-n-roll machines Federation of Horsepower, head to www.northtexasrockrally.com for more details.
As a final note, last year Back in Black was a supporting band at the event and this year they are a headlining act. Lets just wait and see where Federation is in the line-up once they kick some Texas bootie.

DIS NOTES:
Whoa pups. Its been a tough week. My roomie graduated Cum Laude last weekend and we had an outstanding celebration. In an effort to recover I hit the couch with some Netflix this week and saw an exceptional documentary featuring two bands I had never before listened to. DiG! (Interloper Films 2005), shot over the course of seven years, chronicles the story of two friends, Anton Newcombe of Brian Jonestown Massacre and Courtney Taylor of the Dandy Warhols, as they set out to create a music revolution in the face of the dollar driven music industry. Narrated by Courtney Taylor the film gives equal time each bands story, The Dandy Warhols experiencing a fair amount of success abroad and the Brian Jonestown Massacre, while prolific, is challenged by many self installed roadblocks. The relationship between the bands is what makes this story interesting. While a degree of mutual respect remains throughout the story unfolds into a full-on rivalry and even a gentle death threat. This DVD also has the very cool zoom feature, when cued you can access additional footage. Fans of the rockumentary genre would be wise to pick it up regardless of whether or not you like the bands, Anton Newcombes tortured genius persona alone makes it worth it.

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND !!!

FRIDAY, MAY 6
The Black Presidents, The Rosemantics, The Golden Hearted Whores, and The Architects @ EL TORREON
7:30pm, all ages
Well be heading to the El Torreon this evening to catch one of our KC favorites, The Golden Hearted Whores. The Whores have been called a lot of things but always fall rightly into the category of rock-n-roll, aligned in style with some of the greatsT. Rex, Iggy Pop, and Bowie. The masters of the setlist these boys are. It doesnt take long for a new song to become a favorite and they always seem to line up the new and familiar just right while throwing in that just right cover for good measure. They do what any great band should, they always give the ladies something to shake to. Cody Wyoming (vocals, guitar) returned to the KC area in November of 03 and quickly enlisted KC music veteran Robbie Wagner (Pamper The Madman, Eric), Ben Ruth (Overstep, Grand Marquis) and Adam Stotts (Overstep, Lucky Graves) to fill out The Whores. Wed like to wish the boys luck as they head into the studio this week.

Brother Trucker w/ Outlaw Jim and the Whiskey Benders @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
Country roots rockers Brother Trucker, hailing from Des Moines, IA, are most certainly the band to see for those who embrace the Americana genre. They have received rave reviews in No Depression Magazine and have had the pleasure of Bo Ramsey (Lucinda Williams, Greg Brown) lend his slide guitar prowess to their tune For J off of their 2003 release Something Simple. Lead singer/songwriter Andy Flemings intimate vocals and heartfelt lyrics of the down trodden are perfectly cupped by Mike Fitzpatricks guitar playing, John Colans rhythm, and the bass of Lyle Kevin Hogue.

The Caves, Anvil Chorus, and Hello Superworld @ THE BRICK
Tonight should get interesting as they try to fit my friend Andy Mortons (Danger Bob) new project, the Lawrence based 17-piece Hello Superworld, on the stage at the Brick. Sometimes compared to Polyphonic Spree, obviously due to the size and energy of the group, Andy prefers to describe them as a great big happy garage-rock pop band. JAQS NOTES:
Well, its that time of year again when I roll into my fit of shameless self-promotion.
As most of you know, I am a glutton for punishment, so to keep true to myself, I agreed to take on yet another year and 60 + bands, by joining the team that will bring you Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival 2005 (June 18, 19, and 20, Clinton State Park, Lawrence, KS). Now pups, I know this isnt everyones thing, but Im bustin my hump for this event and I feel the need to give a shout out to all the Sad Dogs that find this right up their alley. This event most definitely appeals to the folks who are into the jam thang. However, I want to fill you in on the Americana factor that Wakarusa has to offer. This year we have:
Wilco (Out on the road after the Grammy win for Ghost), Calexico, Neko Case (Bloodshot Records Americana Songstress), Son Volt (Back with a hot new line-up and a new release), Split Lip Rayfield (Closed the fest last year, and will once again, with one of the most hell-raisin shows to date), as well as Hackensaw Boys, The Gourds, Martin Sexton, Junior Brown, Old Crow Medicine Show, Truckstop Honeymoon, Jeff and Vida Band, Drakkar Sauna, and Arthur Dodge and the Horsefeathers. Yes, its a camping festival, but its not mandatory to camp to enjoy these bands. We have day passes available, we have hotel package deals, and we offer shuttles to and from town. So take a visit to www.wakarusa.com and check it out for yourselves. Wakarusa is blast and provides the perfect excuse to spend some time in the great outdoors.

DIS NOTES:
Kansas Citys The Official Rock and Roll Radio Show, 2-3pm, on 90.1FM KKFI www.kkfi.org
No matter what my Sunday schedule (read: couch bound or chores) brings, I always try to make time for The Official Rock-n-Roll Radio Show. When I first started listening, it was hosted by Gary and Alegra Cloud (both formerly of KCs Boot Hill). Lately, my Sad Dog partner in crime Jauqui and our good friend Bill Sandahl (SOL Productions/Donkey Show) have joined Gary in studiolearning the ropes, spinning their favorites and givin the highlights off the Sad Dog calendar. I encourage you to tune in and catch the sound of some of the bands we tell you about every week. Lets be honest our words can only go so far and what it really comes down to is hearing the music. Its been a regular music discovery avenue for me. Whether it be some new CD to pick up or pointing me in a direction towards a local band I havent yet seen. They deliver the goods and often times with humorous and insightful rock-n-roll commentary and from time to time an in-studio guest appearance.you never know who might show up. In an effort to build the local music library at The Official Rock-n-Roll Radio Show wed like to encourage local KC bands to submit CDs to add to the catalog. The hosts often play bands with a show in the coming week or shows theyve just seen. While many of the bands you read about in Sad Dog are played on the show already the catalog is not yet full. Email us at
sad-dog@att.net and well let you know if your CD is absent.
