Welcome to summer pups! Its gonna be a rockin hot one!
Oh secrets we can keep. All in due time but lets start it off with the much too absent:
SAD DOG TRIVIA!!!!!!!
Many thanks to Mikes Tavern for bringing us a 3-day Memorial Day Weekend Rock and Roll Cookout stuffed with an exceptional line-up of KC bands. We had the pleasure of taking in Throw Rag w/ Goodnight Daylight there a few weeks ago and it is one fun venue to see the rock. In addition to giving us the rock, they are also throwing in free entry +1 to be up close and personal to Helvis, The Ramalamas, Seconds from Disaster, Last Call Girls, and The Sixteens, Saturday, May 28 to the first Sad Dog to email the answer of the following Sad Dog Trivia question.

Robbie Fulks, Solagget, and Kirk Rundstrom Band @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
Bloodshot artist, singer/songwriter/bad-ass guitarist Robbie Fulks will be gracing, yes gracing, that little stage on Main in support of his new album "Georgia Hard", released May 17 on Yep Roc Records. Here's a man that is difficult to place in one genre as he can shell out the honky-tonk and bluegrass as well as some power pop without missing a beat. He delivers honesty through humor and has the conviction to right out speak his mind. Visit the Recent News section on his website where he shares stories such as "The Worst Gig I Ever Had", and "Appreciation: Lucinda Williams" proving to have quite a talent with the written word as well .He is joined by the pop, rock, jazz, bluegrass and country combo of the Kirk Rundstrom Band, along with the instrumental sounds of Solagget.

Pendergast @ FRED P. OTTS
A few years back I found myself at Daveys Uptown =imagine that=. I believe
The Gaslights and Pembertons (Manhattan, KS) were on the bill with Pendergast. It didnt matter that I wasnt yet too familiar with any of the bands.that one fine boy I wanted to get to know was there and I was saddled up next to him enjoying the conversation. Despite the exchange of sweet flirtation and the solid whiskey pour my favorite bartender Mokie had served up I was compelled to move stage front. I dont remember the song and I dont remember the conversation I left, I do remember that it was one of the rare times Ive been quite so moved to redirect my attention with such conviction. 2+ years later and Pendergast is one of the KC bands I rarely miss. Last year the boys released Truth About Saturday Night. The truth is I gave the CD a couple listens and set it aside. Pendergast is one of those bands I came to know through their live performance and something about the CD left me yearning. This Spring, as we opened the windows and set up the porch for weather induced socializing, I found myself slipping it into the old changer. Boy howdy, it all became clear. Initially I was a bit too intimate with their live show to give the CD a healthy listen. Now that those nights at Daveys with Pendergast have become like a well trusted friend the CD has become something unto itself. If you grew up in the Midwest this is music of the heartland. If you love roots rock-n-roll get out and meet your self a new friend in Pendergast. You have two chances this weekend set your summer off correctly. Go to the show, buy the CD and kick back with that dark stained water. -di

DJ Stagger @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
7-9pmish
Long time Sad Dog readers will have noticed the absence of music related activity in Kansas City on Tuesday nights. DJ Stagger is igniting Tuesdays once again by spinnin rock-n-roll, punk, country and soul at Daveys Uptown.
Proclamation: We here by extinguish Tuesdays as a day of rest. The weather is warm, hop on your feet, skateboard, bicycle or fashionable ride of your choosing, call your friends and congregate in one fell swoop upon the corner of 34th and Main for a frosty one on Tuesdaysthe loneliest day of all. Rightokay so maybe a bit dramatic for an evening without real instruments but Ive always hated this empty spot on our calendar.

The Fucking Champs, Zombi, and Boy Jazz @ THE BOTTLENECK
Wowee, I forgot about The Fucking Champs (San Francisco). I caught them a few years ago at Minneapolis 7th St. Entry with a young stellar band, Drunk Horse (Seattle).
Who needs a bass? Set up with two guitars and a drummer The Fucking Champs approach metal with composed due diligence. Expect something fresh at this show. There is no semblance to familiar or retro. Mostly instrumental but in the way that doesnt make you miss the vocal mics. -di

The Dears @ THE BOTTLENECK
Heres a band that had some hype about em as we rolled into SXSW this year. We caught them at a Waterloo Records in-store and I bought their recent release
No Cities Left. Hailing from Montreal and experiencing elevated recognition in Europe they seem to be escaping most American music critics pigeon-hole-in. Something about this band takes me back to the day when The Smiths, Cure, Bauhaus, Alphaville and Roxy Music were my ever present soundtrack. All that being said, No Cities Left flows as if it should be the soundtrack to some recent femme fatal film noir. -di

RELEASES:
May 24, 2005 Lucero "Nobody's Darlings", Liberty and Lament Records
I most certainly do realize that I mentioned this release last week, but, damn!!!!, it is well worth a second mention. Last week I did not have it in my paws, but oh sweet gods of rock, thank you for delivering this one. The Memphis boys are back with their mix of country, rock and punk...and back with a vengeance. It's a good sign when the first song on the album has you smiling, screaming, and driving way too fast! I just picked it up Tuesday, and I am devouring every song on the release as if I am musically emaciated and just can't fill the void fast enough. I knew from the first lick that it wouldn't leave my side for quite some time. It's that disc that compels you to always start from the beginning and not skip a single moment till the end. -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
On one thoroughly enjoyable trip to Recycled Sounds this week I picked up The Afterparty's 2004 self-titled release. As I hit the new release bin it seemed to jump into my hands and was the first in the stack that I carried with me through the store. All the while, the music playing in the store was definitely striking my interest. While there, I had every intention of picking up the new Ryan Adams & The Cardinals disc, and kept wondering if it was that playing. (Once again, for those of you who just love to hate Ryan, my apologies but I am a fan, and very willing to have stones thrown in my direction. Life has taught me how to duck.) The thing was, it sounded much more like Whiskeytown, Ryan's alt-country band prior to breaking out solo). And with the exception of his first two solo releases "Heartbreaker" and "Gold", Whiskeytown is what made me a fan in the first place. Ok, I seem to have gotten off track. So, moving on. As you have most likely guessed, little did I know at the time, but the sounds filling the record store were the sweet sounds of The Afterparty. Ever eager to hear what would soon be a new gem to add to the collection, I threw it in the CD player and spent a half-hour driving home in what should have taken 5 minutes. Listening to my new purchase, another familiar sound kept leaping to my ears. It was the sound of Gram Parson's and the Flying Burrito Brothers. Having never seen The Afterparty live, it seemed quite fitting that once I did they would all be donning sequined Nudie suits after emerging from Burrito Manor. What might initially seem like an odd mix of comparisons, Whiskeytown and The Flying Burrito Brothers, really isn't such a far stretch considering most any band falling into that alt-country genre has spent quality time with, or has been heavily influenced by, the songs of Gram Parsons. Keep in mind these comparisons I draw come from first impressions. And this is the story of my first moments with The Afterparty. I did pick up the disc with a stack of 6 other releases, all of which have been shuffled in and out of the player since Tuesday scrambling for equal air-time. The Afterparty, Danny Fischer (vocals, guitar), Dave Regnier (vocals, guitar), Sarah Carpenter (vocals), Chris Devictor (bass), Paul Andrews (drums), and Josh Mobley (piano, rhodes, and vocals), is certainly throwing out a unique and welcomed sound to the KC music scene. And, I say with authority, if you are a fan of the Americana music, run, not walk, to Davey's Uptown on Saturday night and check these folks out for yourself. And don't forget your Nudie Suit. jaq
To The Afterparty: In this day and age when so many want to stuff Ryan into a sock, I must hope that you take this comparison as praise
DIS NOTES:
Its all about honesty this week. Im a rock-n-roll girl who chooses to visit the country lane from time to time. I was bred on the genres, I suffered my adolescents with rock as my faithful companion and revisited the country roots my family reared me on when I grew a brain in my mid-20s. As with any mixed blood one wanders. Ive done my time with many derivatives, but country and rock are like two siblingsyou love it cuz its in your blood. But last week I paid a visit to my indie cousin. Like any family, I have my favorites spread here to there but its not often I find myself in their company. Last Saturday night, after beating my dear friend Cody at pop culture trivia (eat it sucka), we headed down to The Brick to check out the Dandercroft Showcase. Timing has never been better. We made it just in time to see Bacon Shoe, featuring John Bersuch aka Lethal D, and John Ferguson aka Toine hype man extraordinaire! While the indie reference could be argued on this dynamic duo I know where they come from and they are rooted in indie by their shear innovative efforts (Dandercroft Music Zine and Band Scramble respectively) in Kansas City music culture. Holy hell, rap-magic-spectacular! I didnt know they had it in em. Bacon Shoe is the funniest damn thing Ive seen in a long time and they do it well. Lyrics so raunchy you might find yourself turning it down in your own company. Gracefully followed by Anvil Chorus, I believe this band briefly channeled My Bloody Valentine and thats enough to bring me back next time. However, this is a band that will take me some time to get to know, kind of like a third cousin, but the relationship is off to a fantastic start. What Ive come to learn this week is, like with any family, KC local live music is vast and its good to go a-visitingyou are bound to be entertained by something refreshing.
