What theJohn Doe, founder/member of L.A. punk band X and one heck of a sexy solo singer/songwriter, must have taken a liking to our little town. I think hes been through KC about three or more times in the last year, and I have missed every one of those shows. You can be sure I will not miss him this time around.
Currently on tour with Lucinda Williams, John is taking a break to play some smaller venues, and lucky for us, Mikes is on the list. He is on tour in support of his latest solo release on Yep Roc Records, Forever Hasnt Happened Yet. This one is juicy and packed full of guest appearances by Dave Alvin, Grant Lee Phillips, and Neko Case.

Its Americana at the Cup tonight pups. I still have not had a chance to check out Yellow No. 5 but Di is a fan and I cant wait for the chance to see these boys. Falling in that alt-country genre they have been compared to the Old 97s. That is more than enough to get my behind off the couch. And out of the gates, Leaving Smallville will be joining the Yellow No. 5 crew this eve sending out a sound that smacks a bit of The Flying Burrito Brothers and a bit of The Band. jaq

Lucinda Williams is currently on tour but as of today no KC dates have been announced. So far the closest she will get is Lincoln, NE on July 1 (better hurry up if you want to catch this one). She has been in the studio working on a new album but, in true Lucinda style, is taking her new songs on the road before she lays them down. John Doe, Rob Jingklas, Gia Ciambotti, and Susan Tedeschi are a few of the artists supporting this tour. Rest assured I will be keeping one eye open for KC dates and will let you know as soon as I know.

JAQ & DIS NOTES:
Hey Pups! Happy 4th. You might be surprised to see The Dog coming your way so early on this Thursday, but we had to get er done and get er out as there is just way to much rock this week and we must get started! Might as well join us and kick off this holiday weekend now! Di is out of town but should sure to be spotted at our favorite venues when she returns this weekend. As for myself, I will be headed to Daveys Uptown to catch Jon Dee Graham and The Gaslights. I was a bit torn as I would like to check out Shurman @ Mikes Tavern, but not torn enough to ever miss a Jon Dee show. And as I never tire of The Gaslights, they just keep getting better and better with every show, this night will prove to be a great kick-off to one explosive weekend. -jaq

SATURDAY, JUNE 25
Jonathan Richman @ THE HURRICANE
9pm, advance $10 / $12 day of show
The general public of mass market appeal is likely only to be familiar with Jonathan Richman in his tree perched singing role in the movie "There's Something About Mary". Others may remember him as a member of The Modern Lovers. And then there are the others, those die-hard fans not without the persistent of Deadheads seeing their man in many states and often sighting the number of shows they've seen. I count myself in the later group having seen him more times than a bakers dozen and in at least one state in each region of the U.S. of A. Often with nothing more than a guitar in tow he leaves you with a smile to last for days as he comically serenades about dancing in a lesbian bar, Picasso, vampires, cars, and his beloved New England. At times self-deprecating and at others whimsical in his observation of daily life, he does country, he does Latin, he does ballads and he rocks with an endearing awkward stance echoing the influence of the Velvet Underground. This time through he's with his drummer Tommy Larkins. -di

Stop by, have a read, catch up on Kansas City goings-on and post if you feel so inclined. Jarrod Birmingham @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
This Texas Gulf Coast singer/songwriter is all Texas High Energy Country, and a true country boy at that. Raised in Texas listening to his grandpa play guitar and fiddle, he spent a good chunk of time earning a living as a bull-rider on the professional rodeo circuit. His songs and story telling come from rough ridin and travelin the nation, eyes wide open to the every day man. His music is diverse, coming from Texas roots as well as time spent on Music Row in Nashville, but is undeniably straight on country.

Her influences include Wanda Jackson (First Lady of Rockabilly), Patsy Cline, Eddie Cochran, Jeff Beck, Buck Owens, and Stevie Ray Vaughn. She has an extensive repertoire of recordings, including her latest release Single Rose, as well as numerous appearances on tribute albums and compilations including Por Vida A Tribute to Alejandro Escovedo; Hard Headed Woman At Tribute to Wanda Jackson; The Bottle Let Me Down (Bloodshot Records stellar album for kidsand adults) and By the Hand of the Father (Alejandro Escovedo). THURSDAY, JUNE 30
Jon Dee Graham, and The Gaslights @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
Jon Dee has proven time and time again to move me with his gruff pipes and mind-exploding guitar. He is one of those Austin musicians who set the bar for those who follow. His unique blend of Texas rock with a punk sensibility had me hooked from the first time the music hit my body. His performances have brought me tremendous amounts of pleasure and now it is time for me to give a little something back. I hope you can help as well. Jon Dees son, Willie, has developed Legg Perthes, a childhood form of avascular necrosis of the hip. The Graham family lost their insurance coverage when the provider filed Chapter 11. With the new insurance company this is considered a pre-existing condition, and they may be dealing with several years of treatment and surgery with no insurance coverage. Friday, June 24, The Continental Club in Austin, TX is throwing a benefit concert with such artists as Shawn Colvin, Alejandro Escovedo, Ian McLagen & the Bump Band, Charlie Sexton, The Resentments, Honky, Steve Poltz, Jon Dee Graham, and many more. Oscar & Grammy Winning engineer/producer Chet Himes will be recording this evening of music for a benefit CD for Willie to be released by Freedom Records. Keep your eyes peeled in the upcoming weeks for the release date. Another way to support Jon Dee, Willie and their family is to make a contribution to: The Willie Graham/Legg Perthes Fund. This can be mailed to: the Willie Graham Legg Perthes Fund c/o RajiWorld, 1810 Airole Way, Austin, TX, 78704. And, of course, you can show your support by heading out to Daveys on Thursday for one heck of a show with KCs own The Gaslights throwin it down and warmin us up. -jaq

Shurman @ MIKE'S TAVERN
Gathering momentum as they tour this summer in support of their recent release "Jubilee", Shurman from Los Angeles, is raising some buzz. No Depression Magazine has described them as "the next Son Volt, Old 97's, Drive By Truckers, or maybe all three." Pay a visit to their website, have a listen and decide for your self.

Sugar Puppy and the Lovely Dumplings @ THE BRICK
This show is described as A Quantum Cute Burlesque Comedy featuring Ms. Sallow Mae, The Kinky Minx, Ms. Cherry Intact, and Toyota Sedan. I have caught Sugar Puppy and her alter egos at more than one of KCs Premier Variety Shows The Donkey Show. I experienced nothing less than shock, amazement and gut wrenching laughter.

Willie Nelson Countryman
Willie goes Reggae pups with his first ever reggae album Countryman. I have not had a chance to check this one out but I am one curious cat. On this release Willie covers reggae standards such as The Harder They Come, and Sitting In Limbo, as well as throwing a reggae twist on country classics such as Johnny Cashs Im A Worried Man sung with Toots (Toots & The Maytals) Hibbert. And a little heads up, Willie will be back on the road with Bob Dylan for a summer tour. So far no KC dates have been posted.

JAQ NOTES:
I am finally back home from an exhausting, but exhilarating, week in the trenches of Lawrence, KS. I want to send out shout to all of my friends who emailed me during my time away. I have missed you all and look forward to seeing you out in my favorite KC haunts as I am ready for a tall glass of ROCK-N-ROLL! Di is taking much needed break, and some time of R&R with family, as she has had to cover my behind and fill in the Sad Dog pages solo the last couple of weeks. Most importantly I would like to dedicate this week in Sad Dog to the memory of our friend and snuggle buddy Mush the cat. You will be missed even as you frolic in fields of mice with our other dearly departed furry friends.

Waka the Dog

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND !!!

Okay what's up? We had a record and overwhelming number of correct answers to last week's trivia question. Are you all secretly a bunch of disco freaks?

Last Week's Trivia:
Question: name the title of the song that incorporates the lyrics, "it's like thunderand lighting." Written by Eddie Floyd and originally recorded by Otis Redding the song hit the top of the charts in 1979 when recorded by another artist who made it a disco hit.

Answer: "Knock on Wood"

FRIDAY, JUNE 17
The Golden Hearted Whores, Bacon Shoe, and Pendergast @ DAVEY'S UPTOWN
10:30ish; Cody Wyoming's Birthday!
This may be the most fun local band line-up this side of summer. If you haven't yet seen Bacon Shoe get to Davey's early to check out this rap-tastic duo. DJ Lethal (otherwise known as John Bersuch - Minds Under Cover / Dandercroft publisher) lays down the rap while filling the role of hype-man extraordinaire is Toine (John Ferguson - Federation of Horsepower). They stole the show at last week's Donkey Show. If you've seen these men in their other projects you might find yourself a bit surprised at the nasty and hilarious nature of their show. It's a special night for The Whores as they celebrate Mr. Cody Wyoming's (vocals/guitar) birthday. He likes spankings and Beam. KC's American root-rockers Pendergast are well known to our readers as we can't seem to quite talking about them. It's a rap-rock-roots-birthday extravaganza at Davey's this eveningdon't miss it!

Black Diamond Heavies @ DAVEY'S UPTOWN
We've given you a run down on the Black Diamond Heavies but for those with some short term memory loss here's a reminder from an earlier Sad Dog. If you dig dirty deep raunchy blues dealt with a rockin force this is your show. This threesome draws comparisons to RL Burnside, with the atomic delivery of Sin City Disciples, and even a little Jon Wayne (the band, not the actor).
Late Show @ 11pm w/ Shotgun Idols, Hydrafader, Casket Life @ DAVEY'S UPTOWN
The rocking good times continue into the wee hours with the late-night bill.starting at 11pm. It's been awhile since we've seen Hydrafader it's great to see we get another chance. Hard-driving-rock-n-roll with one of KC's best rock vocalist fronting the stage.

JAQS NOTES:
Now on the Wakarusa downhillJaq has been on show site a few days already. She'll be back next week with more than a few stories to tell.

DIS NOTES:
How much live music can a couple of young lasses take? This week will be a true test to Sad Dog stamina...
I'm doing it all. I'm heading to Wakarusa Friday afternoon to back our girl Jaq and squeeze in Calexico and Son Volt before the mad dash back to KCMO before the rockin' festivities commence this weekend. The rock-n-roll horizon is loaded for bear for all you live music lovers there's something for everyone this weekend. I have date full of laughs with Bacon Shoe, some shots to buy for Mr. Wyoming, some booty to shake to The Whores, some whisky and sing-a-longs to take in with Pendergast, I refuse to miss the Black Diamond Heavies again so I may see them all three times, Ernie Locke at Otts, after a day in the sun at Worlds of Fun and might as well start the week off right at Blayney's on Monday.
Would you miss us if we took a break? We may need next week to recover...

Benefit for Katie Euliss w/ Kasey Rausch, The Gaslights, Banjo Ghost, The Boon, and Joel Kraft @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
Katie Euliss makes up one half of the hilariously endearing duo Truckstop Honeymoon, the other half being the talented songwriter, picker, and producer, Mike West. Truckstop Honeymoon has had to cancel their summer tour because Katie has to begin chemotherapy. Katie and Mike are confident that the chemotherapy will be able to combat Katies disease and expect to be back with us in the fall. As we know, this type of treatment is very expensive and we constantly see artists battle with the expense of necessary treatment due to the lack of quality insurance available. We are happy to see Daveys Uptown will be hosting this evening to support Katie.

JAQS NOTES:
Jaq is M.I.A. again this week. While she says she's consumed by Wakarusa I'm guessing she's off consumed by one of my suggested reads listed below. Anyone want to guest write while Jaq is otherwise indisposed? -di

DIS NOTES:
Suggested reading for your summer rock-n-roll enjoyment.
Don't fret, I'm not borrowing from Oprah, nor will I be holding a monthly book club where we'll be discussing our inter-most understandings of rock-n-roll debauchery. Reading occupies much of my non-show-going time so here you go, my latest musicography reads:

"The Land Where The Blues Began" Alan Lomax w/ accompanying CD
This book was a gift that took me some time to pick up but once I did it was a hard one to put down. Lomax chronicles his travels "from the Brazos bottoms of Texas to the tidewater country of Virginia" from 1933 - 59. His memoir tells of blues discoveries in levee camps, barrooms, prisons, fields and church congregations as he formulates the birth of blues in America. The story is given real life as he describes the smells, the drink, the racism of the deep-South, and the words of the blues men and women he encounters along his way.

"Green Suite Shoes" Larry Kirwan
I've never been a fan of Black 47 but picked up this book anyway when I read the back and learned the story begins in County Wexford, Ireland. - the county of my roots.
Larry Kirwan led the Irish-American rock band Black 47 but his true talent may lay in his ability to compose a well written memoir. His story begins in the late 1950's when rock-n-roll was breaching the shores of Ireland. Later, Kirwan escapes to New York and becomes a fixture at CBGB's at a time when Blondie and the Ramones are holding court.
Much of the story is told during these times as Black 47 is forming and the American punk tradition comes alive.

"The Dirt" - Motley Crue
This book is not for the faint of heart, in fact, I felt like I needed a good cleansing and the help of grandma's prayers to purify myself when I finished this one. But I'm a sucker for trash/celebrity reads and this one just sort of hopped into my hands. The chapters bounce from one member to the other as each tells their side of the story in their own words. I now recognize Nikki Sixx as a bad excuse for a human being, Tommy Lee as a boy with a huge, uh, heart that is easily led, Vince Neil with possibly the most insatiable appetite for women and Mick Mars as the one with probably more to his story yet to tell.
I'm not sure how these bad boys have lived to tell their story but I'm glad they did, simply to give me an education into the world of filth and debauchery.

FRIDAY, JUNE 3
First Friday! KC Crossroads (20th & Baltimore spreading to the North, South, East and West)

This week, the IFCs outdoor film screening will present a film by Tony Ladesich (Pendergast), Crate Diggers, a short about the obsession and search for that unfound piece of vinyl. Showtime is 7:15pm across the street from the Dolphin Gallery (1901 Baltimore). If this is your first time visiting the Crossroads District let your self wander east along 18th St. past McGee to Locust. A bit off the beaten path this is where some of our favorite galleries lie.

www.wakarusafestival.com

DIS NOTES:
Welcome to the summer pups! Yea, those days of chasing ice cream trucks and canon balls off the high board may no longer be a daily routine but some similar adrenaline is running through me in anticipation of some hot summer nights. I know some of you need the heads up so mark your calendars nowwere giving you the rundown on shows not to miss!
Summers sunrise starts off nicely with Donkey Show VI!!! Ooh yah! June 11 @ DAVEYS UPTOWN. KCs Premiere Variety Show! Youve been there for Bride of Donkey and Eye of Donkey. Ladies and gentlemen, dont miss Donkey Show Pajama Party: The Movie. Indeed, this one will be filmed for a documentary. Well bring you the line up and details in next weeks Sad Dog. Youll be a shameful pup to miss it!
The Black Diamond Heavies (Nashville), with the yet to be named new band featuring KCs sultan son Ernie Locke hit the little alcove of FRED P. OTTS on Sunday, June 19th.
Kansas City music veteran Ernie Locke has returned home. We were sad to see him go and cant wait to see what he brings us now that hes back. Harp to mouth we hope. You might remember Ernie fronting some of Kansas Citys best bands, Sin City Disciples, Tenderloin and Parlay. This is sure to be a welcome home like none other.
The Black Diamond Heavies played here a couple months ago and boy did we hear about it. We scolded ourselves for missing itnot this time pups. If you dig dirty deep raunchy blues dealt with a rockin force this is your show. We got our paws on a copy of their CD this week and this threesome draws comparisons to RL Burnside and the atomic delivery of Sin City Disciples, and even a little Jon Wayne (the band, not the actor). The Black Diamond Heavies will give us three shows this time out. You can also catch them June 18 at Daveys with The Gaslights and on June 20 at Blayneys.
I guess The Gaslights are the sideband extraordinaire to our travelin favorites this summer and rightly so. They share the stage @ DAVEYS UPTOWN on June 30th with Jon Dee Graham and his band. We never miss this gentleman when he rolls our way. Cigarette in hand, Jon Dee always delivers a good story to bust your gut and his gruff voiced serenade is intoxicating and only takes a back seat to his exceptional songwriting.
July 16 one thing we never do here at Sad Dog is spread rumors and were not about ready to start nowas much as the urge is killing us. Just save July 16th on your calendar. We hope to give the definite word on the show next week but in the meantime understand that if you are long time KC live music fan you will want to have this date available. One amazing show is in the works and youll hear it here first!
A double header like none other comes July 22nd & July 23rd when Alejandro Escovedo and Jon Dee Graham (doing double duty in an acoustic opening set and joining Al on stage with the band) visit DAVEYS UPTOWN. KCs Peckinpah will also be playing on the 22nd. Its been a few years since Al made it our way. Back from a health induced hiatus, he is most definitely back. We caught him a couple times at SXSW and it was a beauty to see that smiling face again and the shows inspired chills at more than one moment. You never know what you are going to get at an Alejandro showgentle and easy on you or a raise the roof off rock showor maybe a bit of both. Not easy to categorize Al has his own flavor and style. On this visit he will be bringing a 7-piece band. Tickets are currently available for the 22nd show via Ticketmaster and both shows are available at Daveys 34th & Main they open at 1pm, if want to avoid convenience charges. Get them now this show will sell out!
