We are happy to announce that Pendergast will be filling the bill through the month of August. No word on who is joining Pendergast this week, but you can be sure it will be a line-up well worth checkin out.

JAQS NOTES:
Our friend Pete just turned us on to an awesome radio station out of Dallas, TX, KHYI, 95.3 The Range. For those of us who dont have satellite radio yet, it is great to streamline a kickin station while confined to the desk at work. This one is a gem, Bringin the Outlaws of Americana Country to the Internet. The playlist includes Joe Ely, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Bill Joe Shaver, Jerry Jeff Walker, Slaid Cleaves and many more. Although you still have to deal with the jock chatter, it can be quite entertaining tuning into the happenings in another city. But beware not to get to caught up in the goodness and forget where you are livin. Today Diana was checkin out KHYI and heard a promo for this evenings Slaid Cleaves performance at the Granada. Well, we looooove Mr. Cleaves and she about jumped out of her skin with excitement until she realized it wasnt our Lawrence Granada but a Dallas Granada. Aaaah, if we only had the powers to teleport ourselves we would be there right now, sippin a cold one and anticipating one helluva show. Check it out for yourself at www.khyi.com.
Side note: If the sounds of KHYI appeal to you, I highly suggest you drop the $20 on an advance ticket to see Joe Ely at Knuckleheads Saloon, August 6. Visit www.joeely.com, or go out and purchase Letter To Larado, Love and Danger, Honky Tonk Masquerade, or one of the many other Joe Ely releases, to convince yourself Knuckleheads is the place to be next Saturday.

DIS NOTES:
Man oh man, I dont even know where to start. Ive seen so many incredible shows the past week. Ive been rocked, moved, rocked some more and nearly bleed out of my ears. Ive sweated, been turned on, tears have welled and I even got the chills in that really good way. Ill save the legitimate details for future Sad Dogs, when the time is right and Im over the melancholy Ive been left with. Lets just say the rest of the summer has a lot to live up to. Just a big ole thanks to Mr. Jon Dee Graham, Alejandro Escovedo, Peckinpah, Ramalamas, Throw Rag and even Billy Idol (he still rocks my world) for making it great week to be in Kansas City.

Looking forward.Im going to give you a couple big heads up so mark your calendars now. Black Diamond Heavies (Nashville) are making another weekend long appearance in our parts August 19-21. Different venues with different line-ups and well give you details in a few weeks. Its so great when bands stick around for a couple-few dates to give us our fill so get out and support this dynamic trio for at least one show. Theyve got a down-dirty blues style that hits you in the gut. Some of you may be making Labor Day plans for your end of summer romp. Youll want to include the annual Kowtown Custom Greaserama @ EL TORREON in your schedule. Its a killer car show and the one-man band Bloodshot Bill will be included in the music line-up once again. He makes every other one man band look ridiculous for even trying. Also on board will be The Twistin Tarantulas and Sons of Hercules.

THANKS FROM SAD DOG:
Wed also like to thank those folks that have come up to us or have sent us emails the last few weeks with comments on Sad Dog. The thank yous are much appreciated and keeps us motivated to get this puppy out to you each week. It is especially gratifying those times weve heard, I wouldnt have been here if you hadnt told me about this show. There you go. Thats the pay off for us. Shows are just a whole hell of a lot more fun with cool folks like you in the crowd.

I Wanna Be Your Dog

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

FRIDAY, JULY 22
Alejandro Escovedo w/ Jon Dee Graham (solo) & Peckinpah @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
Advance Tickets - $20
Dont let the $20 cover shy you away from attending one of the two Alejandro shows at Daveys this weekend as you will get every pennies worth and more. After a long hiatus due to health problems, Alejandro is back to that little stage on Main and will be received by a packed house full of thankful fans. Hailing from Austin, TX, Al mixes the straight on rock edge comparable to the Stooges, down and dirty garage rock, punk, and a healthy dose of roots rock. His lyrics are genius and the ever-changing mix of musicians he brings to the stage are masters at their craft. This time around Jon Dee Graham will be in the mix tearin it up on guitar. Di and I had the priveledge of seeing Al with his current line-up twice at SXSW Music Festival this year and both shows lived up to the raw, high-energy, heartfelt head on collisions with his mind blowing shows of the past. Make sure you head out early to see KCs own Peckinpah shellin out their brand of old country tunes, and a solo set by Jon Dee. -jaq

Duran Duran @ THE MIDLAND THEATER
Yes pups, its the same Duran Duran that we all know and love. Actually, I think Duran Duran at Municipal Auditorium was the first concert I was allowed to attend sans parental guidance. Back with the original line-up, the boys are delivering the old favs
Hungry Like the Wolf, Rio, and The Wild Boys that are sure to take you back to the 80s, a time when MTV and pin-striped jeans were cool. -jaq

Asylum Street Spankers, and Banjo Ghost @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
$10 What started as a small jam together at a party became this 10-man band which vows to keep the feel of their live shows like the get-together that started it all. I must add another must see to this weeks show list. These folks will most definitely leave you with a grin from ear to ear. They combine, jazz, country, swing to the mix with witty, and sometimes downright dirty, lyrics that causes some to dive into fits of laughter.

Remember April? Remember how we told you not to miss Throw Rag on their next time through? Well this is it. Theyve coined their sound Sailor Rock, no doubt an influence from where they hail, Salton Sea, CA. Thursday, July 21, 2005

JAQS NOTES:
Man, it is soooooo good to be home and heading into a weekend of rock and roll. I have been sufficiently doused in jam band and need the sweet sounds of Billy Idol and Alejandro to cleanse my soul. So for this week my notes are brief as time is quickly passing and I must get the KC rock word out to you folks before I head off to a White Wedding. Get out this week as the pickins are much too juicy to resist.

DIS NOTES:
Its all about The Litigators for me this week pups. Last Friday was pay day so I headed to Recycled Sounds to drop some cash. I was on a mission to pick up some local CDs and I hit pay dirt with many. I finally got The Litigators Look Out For The Bottom Line in my hot little hands and it was quickly delivered to the CD changer. Where has all the good rock-n-roll gone? No where my friends. This is one party ready record, of the stand-up-and-Ill-make-you-shake-your-ass-type. My only complaint is that it is much too short. The next eve, I set out to catch the Tenderloin reunion at Daveys. The joy seeped seeing ole Ernie on his home stage once again but only after being brutally warmed up by The Litigators earlier in the eve. Now, Ive seen them many times before but never have they so commanded my attention. Maybe it was the energy of the night, maybe it was the repeated listen of their CD, may be it was because I had been stuck in Kentucky for five days. Front man Jeremiah Kidwell explodes with an uncontrollable energy to the music that surrounds him. He shines bright in the middle of what appears to be a rebirth in Kansas City rock and roll thats finally taking root. True KC rock-n-rolla has been on a bit of hiatus. But the last couple of years has brought the emergence of The Litigators, Ramalamas and Federation of Horsepower bringing back the faith, in a solid trifecta. Let er ride.

In a fitting sidebar, I must state: After seeing last weekends show INXS should have searched a little harder.

JAQS NOTES:
I am stuck on the top of a mountain top in West Virginia with about 10,000 hippies. I would prefer not to see another port-a-potty again in my life, well, at least until I get off the mountain. The road to the All Good Festival is very remote and it is legal to shoot someone in West Virginia if they are trespassing on your property. I was very excited to witness the crime scene at a local dive where one shooting due to trespassing occurred. No worries, business did not diminish as folks were back at their favorite bar stool once the mess was cleared. It is beautiful here on "Martin's Mountain Top" and I have the pleasure of working with some fantastic folks. In a sea full of hippie bands my saving grace is The Flaming Lips performance this eve. Very excited for The Lips and looking forward to shuffling some 20 or so Furries on and off the stage. Hehehehehe!!! I did get a phone message from Roach telling me to check out Lake Trout that they are awesome!!! I am definitely going to have to check em out myself as Roach and I sometimes differ on our musical preference. Other bands of interest on the bill are Les Claypool and Jason Isbel (of the Drive By Truckers) trio. That all goes down this eve and then I roll into the monotonous days of the "jam bands". That's cool. Maybe someone will surprise me. I would much rather have Tenderloin and The Litigators on that stage, but, oh well!! Take care pups!! Full report will be coming heading your way! Gotta Go!

DIS NOTES:
Im just returning from the lovely state of Kentucky. No live music for me this week but I did get the opportunity to wander through the International Bluegrass Museum in Owensboro, Kentucky. What a treat. The Godfather of Bluegrass, Bill Monroe, hails from these parts of Kentucky (as does Johnny Depp!) and theyve honored him quite well, and other greats, with a well done and beautiful museum in downtown Owensboro. If you ever find your self out this way, and you might if you are a true bluegrass fan I understand Owensboro also puts on one heck of a bluegrass festival in the Spring its worth a stop into the museum simply to check out the gallery of black and white photography documenting the history of Bluegrass.

Woof!

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

FRIDAY, JULY 8
Golden Hearted Whores, Ramalamas, and The Lucky Graves @ MIKES TAVERN
Well this lil dive over on Troost is doing its deed to keep KC Live Music in the forefront. They used to have a good show from time to time but you avid Dog readers will have noticed they are appearing regularly on our calendar. Mikes has been through a face lift and unloaded a wall and expanded the stage setting its self up nicely for a regular stop on the KC live music circuit. As far as were concerned this town cant have enough venues and wed like to thank them kindly for giving us music lovers another venue and delivering on some great shows like this all local show tonight.

The Moaners, The Misery Boys, Mark Jungers, and the Whistling Mules @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
Featuring former Trailer Bride front woman Melissa Swingle this female rock duo are out in support of their debut recording Dark Snack.

Lucero, Honorary Title, and The Glass @ THE BOTTLENECK
Go buy the latest Lucero release Nobodys Darlings and you will hop in your car and head west to Lawrence this eve. I have been a Lucero fan for a few years now after taking the advice of a friend to check them out on a trip to Chicago. These boys never fail to put on one high-energy show fired by the heat of their hometown of Memphis. They are gritty and grungy, they can throw down pure rock, the send out a ballad fueled with a punk sensibility. As much as I anticipate the new release of an artist, there is always that moment where I hang on the edge of my seat wondering if it will find a permanent place in the ol CD player, if it will match up to those that came before. With Nobodys Darlings the first track, Watch It Burn, had me hooked, and even took me a couple of days to digest it and move on to the rest of the album. It is that good! -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
The John Doe Thing
When I walked into the KKFI studio on Sunday for the weekly Official Rock and Roll Radio Show, there was a feeling in the air not unlike the scene in Poltergeist just before the swirl of sparkling blue smoke turned into the crazed beast on the stairs. My bag was packed with CDs, all of the tracks just begging to get their day on the air. Today had a particular theme as we were anticipating an interview with The John Doe. Gary, Bill, John Stubblefield and I were very excited about the interview, mulling over questions we might ask. My bag of CDs bulged of recordings of John Doe projects such as L.A. punk legends X, The Knitters, his solo album Kissingsohard and the newest release featuring guests Dave Alvin, Grant Lee Phillips, Neko Case, and Cindy Lee Berryhill, Forever Hasnt Happened Yet. Gary fittingly started off the show with the X tune 4th of July and it was about that time our poltergeist reared its ugly head. 4th of July cut short about half way through the song and from that point on it became the Official Rock and Roll Medley Show as we didnt seem to get through an entire song the rest of the show. But the day was saved as Gary, after some trials and tribulations, got John Doe on the phone and on air for the interview. Just off of a short stint with Lucinda Williams he reflected on how wonderful it was to play to packed 2000 seat venues, and how he was impressed people traveled from show to show to see her. Gary mentioned a band call The Methadones and how he had friends who followed them across the country. John showed his humorous side as he retorted, I havent heard of the band but I have heard of the Program. Needless to say, we survived the radio show and were released from the poltergeist in time to head down to Mikes Tavern last night to catch John Doe with his current back up band, Luca, hailing from Tuscon, AZ. We experienced sweet retribution as we sang along to 4th of July, in its entirety, and even had the opportunity to hang out with John a bit. I thanked him for coming on the radio show and essentially saving the day. He smiled and said, Now I can say I am a musician, actor and ass-saver.
After the show, John talked with fans and took numerous photos with what seemed like each and every one. I forgot my camera, of course, but managed to squeeze in between flashes of photos to tell him good-bye. On my way out the door I thanked him again for the interview and told him how much I enjoyed the show. He gave me a big hug and said in the most genuinely charming and friendly way, Keep being pretty. I think he says that to all the girls, but fellas, it left me feeling like a million bucks and couldnt have come at a better time.
Side note. Many of his fans kept asking him to bring The Knitters through KC on their upcoming tour. His reply, I am going to try to get them here. So keep your eyes peeled pups, if The Knitters come to town it will be a legendary day and a show not to be missed.

DIS NOTES:
Heya pups! Good to be back in the land of plenty. Ive been in Iowa the last couple weeks for a bit of work and some family reunion action for which the potato salad factory was in full swing. Things just arent right in the world when you find yourself in place without live music. I did not properly equip myself with CDs either so my chosen music companion of the week was KGGO Des Moines, thats right classic rock. Oh the memories a station like that can induce. Great to see there are some great shows out there this week to make everything right again. Next week Im off to Louisville and Owensboro, Kentucky for more work and if the stars are aligned Ill stumble upon a venue on my night off and catch myself some good Kentucky local music to report back on. Jaq is off to W. Virginia next week to work All Good Festival so next weeks Dog will be coming at you on Friday when I return to my trusty keyboard.
