North VS South Festival (Aug. 19 20), LAWRENCE, KS
Mike McCoy (Black Rabbits and Cher UK) collaborated with friends Baby Grant Johnson of Minneapolis and Hunter Darby of Austin on an idea to bring the great sounds of two major music towns , Minneapolis and Austin, to Lawrence and call it the North Versus South Festival. Now in its second year, North Versus South Festival has increased the number of bands on the bill and Jackpot Saloon has been added to the list of venues along with Replay Lounge and 8th Street Tap Room. You can purchase a wristband at all three North VS South venues for $10, which allows you entry into all three venues the entire weekend. If you prefer just to hit one show, venues will be charging a cover of $2 to $3 dollars per night.

JAQS NOTES:
I should be heading west to Lawrence to take in a few shows at the North Versus South Festival, as some of the bands on the line-up have come highly recommended. However, the KC line-up this weekend is much too luscious to pass up. And, I have been left in the dark, and feel as if Ive been missing something fantastic, by not having the chance to check out the Black Diamond Heavies. I will not let this weekend go by without a Heavy dose.
It seems I am faced with another musical dilemma and once again wishing I had the super powers of teleportation. I will, without question, be headed to Daveys Uptown Saturday eve, but the back of my mind will be filled with thoughts of the great shows I am letting slip past in Lawrence. Saturdays North Versus South line-up is truly yummy. On the bill is Austins Grand Champeen, often compared to early Replacements and Soul Asylum, while adding a few twists, turns and honky-tonk riffs. What a more fitting band for this festival as they hail from Austin and are compared to forerunners in the Minneapolis music scene. Also appearing Sat. are Lil Capn Travis of Austin with their mix of 70s outlaw, 60s stoner rock and 90s psychedelic pop yahoo music. Then throw in the hootenanny that is the Gleam from Minnesota, stopping through Lawrence on their Six-Pack Sized Mid-West Tour. They won a Best of the Twin Cities 2005 award for Best Album of the Last 12 Months (The Chisago County EP). Also on the bill are Gleam label mates and roots rockers Ol Yeller. It looks like I will be making a few CD purchases this weekend to curb my craving. www.grandchampeen.com / www.lilcapntravis.com / www.thegleamusa.com / www.olyellerband.com

DIS NOTES:
The M.O. for this weekend is to sneak out from under the grasp of visiting family to catch one of the many last great rock shows of the summer. Now dont get me wrong-- love the family and lots of laughs are surely to ensue, but theyve got some less than attractive timing planning a trip to KC when live music becomes a healthy choice of selection and not something to search for. I plan to wear them out during the day, put em to bed early and head out. There was a time when they may have been front and center with the best of us but time passes and a warm snug bed has now become the calling of choice. Many years ago I was challenged by the sneak out, not to leave foot prints in the snow or have my trusty dog Jess bark upon my return. Things are looking promising. Sorry Mamacita Sad Dog -- but The Heavies, The Huskers, The Whores, The Marys and the return of Parlay are on deckIll just meet you in the a.m. for coffee, Ill take it black.

First of allYOU MUST CHECK OUT A SHOW AT KNUCKLEHEADS OUTDOOR STAGE! This hideaway in the East Bottoms transports you to a little wonderland by just turning the bend to Fog Cycles. Our first visit to this venue was last week for Joe Ely. Whew, What a perfect night!
Tonight is a great opportunity to check out the venue and get a double dose of Candye Kane. What a tale she has to tell. Candye found her home when she found the blues, a place where women have colorful pasts. Candye is often quoted as saying that she is a black drag queen trapped in a white womans body and she can belt out Led Zeppelin with the best of them. I need to fit a weekly visit to Knuckleheads into my schedule, and this sounds like the perfect opportunity. And if you get there early (6pm) you can take in a free Honky Tonk Swing Dance lesson. -jaq

BIG SCREEN:
Gus Van Sants LAST DAYS (Starts Friday, August 12, 2005)
This film starring Michael Pitt, tells the story of Blake, a Seattle musician who is buckling under the weight of fame, obligations and a mounting feeling of isolation IMDB.com. Most reviews are careful to point out that the story is simply reminiscent of Kurt Cobains. Well that is most obvious once one catches a glimpse of the promo posters for Last Days. Mr. Van Sant has gone to great lengths to transform Mr. Pitt into a character looking the spitting image of the Nirvana front man and 90s icon. I will give it a try as I recommend more than a few of Van Sants films including Drugstore Cowboy (1989), My Own Private Idaho (1991), and Good Will Hunting (1997). -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
By the Hand of the Father, Alejandro Escovedo
Through the years Austin songwriter/musician Alejandro Escovedo has delved into many musical genres, all of which he makes his own. We can enjoy the punk rock of his band the True Believers and garage punk sound of Buick MacKane. His solo work mixes Austin country rock, Americana, Stooges influenced punk and straight on rock and roll, delivering extraordinary ballads that can bring a tear to the eye to all out rock songs that beg you to dance till you drop. In the past years he has worked with playwrights Teresa Chavez, Eric Gutierrez and Rosie Portillo on a theatrical production incorporating Alejandros music to tell its stories. By the Hand of the Father tells stories of the 20th century journey of a Mexican-American father and the legacy of Mexican-American immigrants. Special guests include Ruben Ramos (singing Rosalie), Kevin Sifuentes
(Actor), Rosie Portillo (Actress), Rosie Flores (singing Ballad of the Sun and Moon), and Pete Escovedo (singing Inside This Dance). Although this a performance of By the Hand of the Father is airing on Austin City Limits this Saturday, August 13, KCPT is currently not airing this program. It will be a rare treat for those of you who are able to pick up ACL on another station. For others you can enjoy the songs from this theatrical production via the CD out on the Texas Music Group label. Be sure to visit www.alejandroescovedo.com to make your purchase and give a shout out to KCPT to request that Austin City Limits be included in their weekly schedule. Al has toured with this production in the past. Check in on his tour dates as he might take the show on the road again in the future. It would be worth the road trip.

DIS NOTES:
As Jaq mentions above we made our first venture out to Knuckleheads in the East Bottoms last weekend. Why the hell did we wait so long? We hereby christen it the best outdoor music venue in the greater KC area. Just a short drive from mid-town, one-mile North of Independence Ave under the Chestnut Bridge youll feel transported, as our friend Pete says, to a shack bar in Key West. Sans the ocean its just far enough away from midtown and familiar faces to approach the feel of a vacation. A large patio with plenty of seating nestled between two stages was the perfect setting on a late-summer night. A small stage in one corner held the opening band while the larger stage set in front of an old caboose awaited to showcase the main act. How appropriate as the bar couldnt lie any closer to a functioning train track. The beauty of the weather was only shadowed by the yummy smells of the grill and sounds of Joe Ely on stage. I love it when Jaq and our friend Pete say, Di, you really need to check this band outit has only lead to great things. Last weekend - no exception. If Johnny Cash would have found roots in Texas I imagine he would have come out sounding like Joe Ely. I never draw comparisons to Cash but Im doing it this time. Joe was joined on stage by accordion player and Tejano Record Grammy Winner Joel Guzman and what a vision these two made. (Joel looks like a Latin Marky Mark). The sound of a train coming up the tracks was all they needed to break their set list and lay into Boxcars. While this was my first Joe Ely show I gather it would have made an excellent live CD release. Joe played a song called, She Never Spoke Spanish to Me, a crowd favorite. Following She Never he decided to do something he apparently rarely does and do the follow up or sequel to that song, She Finally Spoke Spanish to Me. This gentleman is one that feeds off the crowd so obviously. His rendition of Robert Earl Keens The Road Goes on Forever changed the dynamic of the evening. We went to a concert but it ended in a party with the sentiment that we were all in it together. While this two man show was not a disappointment I understand Joe Ely with full band is even better. I reckon hell be back. We all had that much fun.

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

FRIDAY, AUGUST 5
The Dark Circles @ MOLLOY BROS.
Congratulations to Steve Tulipana and Shawn Sherrill who have taken over Molloy Bros. in Old Westport. Rumor has it that the name will stay the same until an October Grand Opening in which the new name, Record Bar, will hang high above 1020 Westport Road. We always welcome a new live music venue to KC and I dont see these boys disappointing us. So join us tonight in celebration as the doors open under new ownership with KCs own The Dark Circles kickin off the first night of live music and perhaps Steve and Shawn will round off the eve by spinnin some tunes.

Joe Ely w/ Hayes Carill @ KNUCKLEHEADS SALOON
$20 Advance/$25 Door
Ok my friends, there is still time to get your paws on an advance ticket to see the amazing Joe Ely. It has been much to long since he has made his way back to KC for a solo performance. The last time I saw him play solo was at that venue I miss so much called the Grand Emporium. Well, hes back now baby and I hope to see many familiar faces next to me. Hailing from Austin, TX, Joe is the Texas Country Rocker, and is often on the same bill with the Jersey Boss himself. He has a true Texas country sound thats not watered down, but instead, fueled by a punk rock sensibility, which garnered him a spot on tour with the Clash. He has an epic style of writing that puts you right in the pocket of the lives of his characters. He is part of the Mexican-American All Star Band Los Super Seven featuring Freddy Fender, David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos, guest Doug Sahm, and many, many more. I recently caught him at the Uptown Theater for a Song Writers night that featured Lyle Lovett, Guy Clark, John Hiatt, and of course, Joe Ely. Wow, what a night. Joe is a man of many styles and makes you feel like you just walked into a Mexican Fiesta on a steaming hot day and were handed the best margarita in town. How could you miss that? -jaq

SUNDAY, AUGUST 7
The Golden Hearted Whores, and Invincible Czars (Austin) @ FRED P. OTTS
Up close and personal on the P. Otts stage is just about the best way to catch a Whores show. The boys have been recording a CD this summer and a couple weeks back Cody Wyoming (lead vocals, guitar) played me the first three, almost finished, cuts. And I thought the EP he did on his own in 04 was great. Sunday night the boys will delight us with a new song, which at least one member was heard saying, is our best yet. Each of their songs seems to be a favorite for someone in the crowd and the couple, oh so perfectly chosen covers they lay out each show will make this another great night at P. Otts. The Invincible Czars out in support of their newly released debut studio CD Gods of Convenience have a style a bit difficult to explain, a lil polka-rock-jazz outfit. Looks like Austin is about to unleash some weird rock in these parts. -di

NEW RELEASE:
Buffalo Saints Walking The Dead
The big CD Release Party was last weekend at Daveys, and in a fit of amnesia I completely spaced off this show, which was on my list of shows not to miss. Luckily I got my paws on the disc. The music of the Buffalo Saints is right up my alley feeding me that country rock/Americana sound that I often crave and usually find streaming from my car speakers. It is always a thrill to find it right outside my front door. Walking The Dead fits the bill as it varies from song to song in its interpretation of the Americana sound. They have no problem with the straight -forward country rock as is obvious on the title track Walking The Dead and 50/50. They have great knack for the melodic Americana (You Leave First, Ill Leave Last and Are You A Friend of Mine) smackin a bit of that Whiskeytown sound that I love and seem to draw comparisons much too often. I think my favorite track on the CD is Off Her Rocker. Not that it stands out from the rest in quality, but more for its Tucson sound you might find spilling off of a Calexico disc. I have really been drawn to this groove lately as it conjures up romantic visions of a border town, cowboys, and would be most fitting in a film, narrated by Sam Shepherd. Thom Hoskins (Vocals, Guitar, and Harmonica) uses the voice god gave him, keeping it smooth and natural with no hint of force or imitation. Thom along with Ryan Johnson (Drums and Percussion), Mike Alexander (Guitar) and Nate Harold (Bass, Organ and Vocals), have put together an album that leaves me liking it more with every listen.

GO OUT AND GET IT:
Architects Keys To The Building
OK, OK, I know I am a bit behind! I should not have neglected this recording for so long. I have not yet had the chance to check out the Architects' live show and this is what usually fuels me to buy a disc. There is always that one band whose shows constantly conflicts with my schedule. Boys, I will see you soon I promise!! But thanks to Roach
bringin in an Architects tune to play on the Official Rock and Roll Radio Show, I heard a little and wanted more. As for the disc, lovin the sound of straight on rock mixed with a healthy dose of R&B. I have to say itall you Black Crowes fans out there better pick up Keys To The Building. Although I draw the comparison to the Crowes, the Architects definitely add their own style, making the music a little thicker and a bit heavier. Nothing wrong with that! Thank you John Hulston for supplying me with some great tunes. Pups, head to the Anodyne Records website to sample the Architects and some other great KC bands as well. -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
Hustle and Flow (Paramount/MTV)
Just go see it!! Until yesterday, I had not heard about this Sundance Film Festival hit, which by the way, broke Sundance history with a $16 million dollar acquisition by Paramount/MTV. Whoa, am I happy I was enticed to get to the theater. This urban drama takes place in the heat of Memphis and tells the tale of Djay, a pimpin, drug-dealin, hustler turned rapper, the women he keeps and an unlikely bunch who together find a way out of the hustle and mundane. The acting is phenomenal and the storyline raw and human, both heart wrenching and hilarious at the same time. I read on a comment sheet on the Cinemark website that the soundtrack should have a supporting role title. I do agree. Not one to have rap albums filling the CD shelf, I will have to get out and get me
some Hustle and Flow, if for nothing else, the life and times of Djay rap Its Hard Out Here for a Pimp. Visit www.hustleandflow.com for more info and to sample the soundtrack. Thanks T- for getting me movin!

DIS NOTES:
I walk to work everyday. As of late, my walks have started near 6:30amgetting in early as I prepare for an event I have coming up in September. Most mornings are fairly uneventful, hardly a soul on the street and Im left to my own pace and thoughts often before my first cup of joe and still a bit cloudy. I shake up my route depending on my mood and how late of a start Ive gotten. Today, I took the quick one, cutting through the grounds of the neighborhood youth detention center. Its usually quiet on the streets that early but today I heard the faint sound of the harmonica. Sure enough as I rounded the corner of the youth detention center parking lot it became louder and louder and I finally focused in on the point of the source. A gentleman who appeared in his mid-50s was sitting in his truck with stereo cranked waking the day better than any ole rooster. A dirty blues number over the speakers and him rockin out in the drivers seat in all his glory. I dont blame him it was a groovin little number. As I walked by he shouted out, I need to get to work but do you hear that, do you hear that? (belly laugh ensues). Still rockin out he adds, oooo ya, (more belly laughing) and he sings along I got an itch but I dont know where to scratch. Oh yeaaaAAHHHH! As I made my path beyond his vehicle with a big old grin on my face and a shake in my step I imagined he probably sat there, late for work or not, until that song was finished. Now why dont we all start our day like that.?
