FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30
American Catastrophe / In The Pines / The Afterparty @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
Three of my most recent Kansas City favorites take the stage on one night at Daveys Uptown. This is a spectacular line-up of amazing sounds, lyrics and musicianship. A fan of any of these three bands will likely enjoy the others on the bill. Each band has its own distinct sound but all three pull on a rich Americana influence.

Anvil Chorus / Forevernevercame / Sky Pilot @ THE BRICK

I / Arthur Lee Land @ MIKES TAVERN
If you are in the mood for some high energy, butt shakin, soulful blues and hip hop beats then you must see KCs own I! Warming you up this eve is the one-man-afrograss-folk-rock-ensemble hailing from Boulder, CO, Arthur Lee Land.

Record Bar Grand Opening Weekend Continues @ RECORD BAR
Tonight features new Sad Dog favs American Catastrophe and Sonic Spectrums DJ Robert Moore spinnin what always proves to be a brilliant mix of tunes. American Catastrophe is dark and sultry, calling on images of the old west, and whose tunes would be quite fitting in a film narrated by Sam Shepherd. And if you havent had a chance to tune into Sonic Spectrum, you should set your dial to KCUR 89.3 FM, Saturdays 2:00-4:00pm. Robert Moore, KCUR Music Director, never fails to deliver the most eclectic two hours of music on air. He can hit you with some indie and alternative then turn around and give ya the blues and honky-tonk. You will discover something youve never heard and run out and buy the disc, or you will kick back and relish in an old favorite. Robert is a great supporter of local music and never forgets to give you a taste of the KC sounds. This will be a great night indeed. -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
As you might have noticed, this week in Sad Dog has mentioned the Record Bar quite a few times. Well hell yeah it is!!! Congratulations to my old friends Steve Tulipana and Shawn Sherrill on the Grand Opening of this new joint. Formally Malloy Bros. (Southwest Trafficway and Westport Road), the bar is taking a slow turn away from its Irish predecessor. The cuisine is shifting from traditional Irish fare and leaning towards Italy with paninis and pizzas. The walls are beginning to hold 45s, Classic Record Covers, and being musicians themselves, posters from former bands such as Season to Risk and Shiner. In fact, the owners will take the stage in their newest band, Roman Numerals, on Monday night for the Cowtown for Crawdads Benefit. I happened to stop in on Tuesday night to chill out with a couple of friends. Thom Hoskins, of the Buffalo Saints (local Americana rock bandlove em!) happened to playing acoustic, which I thoroughly enjoyed, then the night rounded off as the DJs came in to spin some punk rock. The Grand Opening line-up is solid so come on out and check it out for yourselves.
It looks like I will be getting a good dose of the Record Bar this weekend myself.

DIS NOTES:
I poured myself a KatrinaRita the other day. A special concoction I came up with to toast the fury of the sisters that have done some rampage on our Southern brethren. A toast doesnt always have to be with well wishes, it can be a damn-well-earned gesture of the not so polite kind.
Id just like to take a moment to thank all the hard working bands in these parts that have donated their time and talent to raise some funds to ease the pain of Mother Natures wrath. Many of these bands rely on the door to carry them through to the next paycheck. It seems we might be doing benefits into the New Year so lets not forget that they are generously giving their talents to help others in need, sometimes at the expense of their own livelihood. And while they all donate their time and talent in good faith, they deserve a great big thank you for relinquishing some of their monthly bank. The musicians wage is what you live music goers feed them. So cheers to those bands for helping us do some good and enjoy it at the same time.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 23
Truckstop Honeymoon w/ Dewayn Brothers @ THE BOTTLENECK
How could I forget? How could I forget the delightful entertainment of Truckstop Honeymoon. I stepped out Wednesday night to catch them at Daveys. This dynamic spousal duo were inspiring, with their maintained wit in light of so much recent hardship. It must be the music. Recently, loosing their home in New Orleans to Katrina theyve taken up residence in Wichita. Lets hope they grow to love the area and greet us with their presence much more often. Their recently released Delivery Boy may be their best yet. The title track is a sweet memory love song to an old crush and an immediate favorite. But the real winner on this CD is Johnny & June a tribute and a call to make a relationship as true as theirs. Every track on this CD is a winner, so if you cant decide on which to pick up at their show, start with this one. If Katrinas ravage has moved you to directly affect someone hurt by her wake head to the Bottleneck for some laughter. di

The headliner this eve, The Hackensaw Boys hailing from the Blue Ridge Mountains, is one of this countrys premier Bluegrass String Bands. You just can't beat their beautiful harmonies and can be sure they will incite one finger-pickin' good time. They have been favorites of the Wakarusa Festival in Lawrence, KS the past couple of years, raisin' the roof with the applause and energy they create.
Warming you up for boys are The Boon (Gypsy Folk), Dirty Mae (Soulful Folk from members of The Afterparty) and The Buttermilk Boys (Bluegrass w/ KC folk fav Kasey Rausch on stand up bass).

@ FRED P. OTTS
Well we do our best to deliver the news here at Sad Dog HQ but this Sundays line-up seems to be a mystery. The Pitch lists Back Porch Mary but it is unconfirmed by their website. So we called the venue and they dont knowthe calendar has gone MIA. Pulling from our limitless resources here at SAD DOG HQ we called a regular booker for these gigs and he is currently unavailable. If it is Back Porch Mary they never disappoint whether acoustic or unplugged they are the hardest working road band in the business. However, we cant confirm they will actually be playing. Regardless, P. Otts on a Sunday can be a nice surprise. We might head out ourselves just to relish in the mystery.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 26
Monotog and It's Over @ THE RECORD BAR (1020 Westport Road)
Hailing from Fort Collins, CO, Monofog is one hellava female fronted rock band. And, after finally seeing It's Over at the Crossroads Music Festival, I just can't get enough of the boys shellin' out their Oldies Influenced Original Rock. -jaq

Brodioke The Ultimate Karaoke Experience 10pm close @ THE BRICK
Are you in the know? I was rewarded last Monday when I found myself at The Brick after a much over due visit to Brodioke. Throw all your ideas of bad Karaoke out the window. Song selection reigns premiere on Brodioke Monday Nights. Hosted by Brodie Rush, KC talent extraordinaire, the hits and wit just keep on rolling. Behind his delicious renderings of songs long forgotten the line is long to hit the popular stage to be a part of this American past time gone good. Whether you are among the stand-up-and-be-noticed-Im-gonna-belt-it-out-variety or in the category of never-in-a-million-years-will-my-ass-be-on-a-stage-type. Its a damn fun time, the later the better for this experience. -di

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28
Micky and the Motorcars (8pm) @ MIKES TAVERN
Here is another great Texas band for you Americana Music Lovers, delivering a sound that's a little bit Steve Earle and a little bit Gram Parsons. The thing is, it would be difficult for them not to turn out a great sound as the brothers in the band, Micky and Gary Braun, hail from a highly talented family. Raised in the Sawtooth Valley of Stanley, Idaho, their biggest influence was their daddy, Muzzie Braun, and their performance experiences came from playing in their family's Western Swing band Muzzie Braun and the Little Braun Brothers. It's not every young performer that gets to hone their craft on the stages of the Grand Ol' Opry and the Tonight Show, all before they even hit their teens. I once ran a show with Micky and the Motorcars and ended up liking them much better than the headliner, which is evident in the fact that my favorite baseball cap is a Motorcars cap and I can't remember who headlined the bill. -jaq
www.mickyandthemotorcars.com

Kirk Rundstrom's (Split Lip Rayfield) Grain & Demise, and Kasey Rausch Band @ THE BRICK
Kasey Rauch and Friends opened for Truckstop Honeymoon last week. Kasey did double duty as she stepped up to change the continuous breaking strings on Mike Wests (Truckstop Honeymoon) guitar at a pace that would have worn her out if she would have closed the show. We got there early and caught her full set a first for both Jaq and I. Her slice of Midwest life lyrics were delivered with a stunningly pure voice. And Im not quite sure how she got inside my head to compose the lyrics for the ultimate stuck in a relationship song. Ill have to ask her to solve that mystery next time I see her. -di

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29
American Catastrophe, and Barbez @ THE BRICK
I caught American Catastrophe for the first time last month at the Crossroads Music Festival. They did a very cool thing by closing a potential hole in the line up when another band failed to show -- on day of show notice. They are also a band that commands youre attention. I was working the rather busy gate but each time I had a lull they pulled me in even at a far off distance. Foreboding and otherworldly, their variety of Americana renders a vision of a southwestern rattlesnake battle American Catastrophe would be the one left standing. -di

JAQS NOTES:
Happy Birthday Jaq! Our girl is taking a well deserved break to celebrate another well lived year.

DIS NOTES:
Nice to be back in sweet KCMO. Last weekend I headed out for some much needed live music. Anything would have done after almost two weeks without...well, with the exception of a very run-of-the-mill corporate party cover band. Fortunately for me, Portland, OR boys I Can Lick Any Son of a Bitch in the House were just up the street at Davey's Uptown to take care of my withdrawal. An ambitious name but I had been told time and again that in fact it's a name they live up to and indeed they did. I reckon they haven't met a SOB yet that wasn't left beggin' for more. Southern flavored Americana bulldozed by a full on rock-n-roll assault, what could be better?.Lead singer Mike D.'s gruff holler conveying raw emotion on a ballad ain't bad either. I've found a new favorite in their 2004 release "Menace". It'll have me singing along front row the next time they hit our fair city. You'll receive many encouraging reminders.
Footnote: Righter wingers and supporters of the current political administration would do well to disregard this episode of "Di's Notes".

Smashtones, The Supernauts, and Sixxy Six @ THE BRICK

Nebula w/ Honky and Hydrafader @ THE HURRICANE
Texas band Honky is led by Jeff Pinkus (formerly of the Butthole Surfers) on bass, banjo and neckbone, Bobby Ed Landgraf on guitars and neckbone and Kenny Wagner on drums and percussions. Di has been raving about these boys and for good reason. Not having seen them live, I had to pull a quote from an anonymous, (yes, seriously, it was anonymous) review describing their sound as hard bass driven shit kickin southern rock. Yeah baby, like it already. Then after getting a taste of their 2005 release Balls Out Inn, I was hooked, roped, rangled, and ready to rumble. Most any review of Honky eventually hits the comparison to ZZ Top, which in undeniable once you get a taste of their sound. The home page on their website reads, This page is dedicated to the fans who believe in the ultimate true rock sound experience from three Southern gentlemen!! I think Im in love!
And dont miss KCs own rock, metal, punk band Hydrafader and the heavy psych-rock sounds of Nebula. jaq

John Mellencampfull on guilty pleasure. I dont know if I would have made it through the 80s without American Fool and Uh-Huh in my music collection. And you will definitely hear me singin out loud when I Need a Lover is playing.
And oh, man, can John Fogerty write some lyrics. I would not be opposed to hearing those sweet CCR tunes. Unfortunately it always sounds like work when I consider heading out to Verizon Amphitheater for a show.

The Drams (Formerly Slobberbone) and Glossery @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
I heard the rumor that Slobberbone was playing Daveys. This cant be so, Lauren and I drove to Lincoln, NE (home of the University of Nebraska Lincoln where Tommy Lee recently went back to school), to see one of their very last shows. Slobberbone is, was, one of my favorite live bands and I couldnt let them go and break up without seeing them one last time. And they announced, right there on the stage at Duffys (the Daveys of Lincoln) that they started their very first tour on that stage and were ending it on that stage. Yes, I understand if you have a tear in your eye. It was quite a moment.
So heres the skinny. Slobberbone did break up because Brian Lane the bass player moved to FLA and the band vowed not to ever replace any members of the band.
Brent Best (songwriter, singer, guitarist, lyrical genius) got his studio up and running and started writing some new tunes. Badass Slobberbone lead guitarist Jess Barr and Drummer Tony Harper said they were in when Brent suggested a new band. Then Chad Stockslager and Keith Killoren (Budapest One) hopped on board, Chad (piano, organ and backing vocals) and Keith (bass and backing vocals), and out of the ruin of Slobberbone came The Drams. Whew! As The Drams, they have a slew of new tunes and their live show caught rave reviews at SXSW by critics and Slobberbone fans alike. I have a feeling deep down in my stomach that we might not hear those ol tunes we know and love, but what the hell, with Brents songwriting and Jesss guitar playing it has to be kick ass. -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
Di is up North in Minneapolis for the week and as always writing Sad Dog is just not as much fun without her. My notes this week are brief as I think I am putting out one of our longest Sad Dog emails yet. In other words, I think Ive supplied you with plenty of reading and a plethora of options to fill your rock and roll week. But what can I say, this town has a ton to offer and I want to share the love with you all.
So, at last, I will pull my paws away from the keyboard and let this bad boy fly.

In Memory of Mississippi Bluesman Mr. R.L. Burnside 1926-2005, and all of those who lost their lives to Hurricane Katrina.

In tribute to all of the survivors of Hurricane Katrina and to all of those who are doing their best to survive the aftermath of this tragedy.

If you have at least $5 (the minimum donation) to spare please consider visiting the Red Cross website at www.redcross.org and giving what you can.

Stay tuned to Sad Dog for information on benefit shows at our favorite rock venues in the next few weeks. We have heard word that at least a couple of benefit shows are in the works, and as soon as we know details you will know details. We love KC music community and the willingness to band together not only for friends, family and fellow musicians, but to run to the aid of complete strangers in need as well. Thank you for your spirit!

RELEASES:
Minds Under Cover
Head to (http://www.myspace.com/10902143) to check out 4 new tunes from their new album out in a couple of months. The new album was recorded by Sterling Holman at Audible Surgery Studios and features Ian Ballard (drums), John Bersuch (vocals/guitar), Jerimaih Rozzo (keys/samples) and E Clarke Wyatte (keys).

JAQS NOTES:
My notes for this week are completely unrelated to rock-n-roll but well worth mention.
After 9/11 my friends Shannon and Kirk and I desperately wanted to do something to help the victims of the tragedy and scrambled to decide the best course of action. We decided to throw a garage sale and donate all proceeds to the Red Cross. The day proved to be a raging success as friends gathered together their goods and donated their time to help sell the wares. We had a few weary shoppers who didnt quite believe our hearts were in the right place, but overall we were met with amazing support. Many folks just stopped by to give a donation, stay for a cold beverage, chat a bit, and then went on their way. Unfortunately, we are once again in a position where we desperately want to do something to help. So, we have decided to hold our second Garage Sale for the Red Cross. Details are still in the works, but I can tell you that the sale will be next Saturday, September 10. Stay tuned to next weeks Sad Dog for location and times. Save a few of your dollars and mark this date your calendars. We would love to see you all! If there is a musician or two interested in strummin the guitar and providing a bit o entertainment for the day, please email me at Sad Dog.

DIS NOTES:
I sit down tonight with a heavy heart. With each passing hour the news of the South continues to grow bleak. Im not even sure how to wrap my head around the sadness in my heart. Just minutes ago I received word about the passing of blues great R.L. Burnside in a Memphis hospital today. The legendary punk rock club CBGB (NYC) lost their lease yesterday. Im calling it a day. Time to put some Jeff & Vida, Truckstop Honeymoon, Fats Domino and Supagroup on the changer and be thankful word has it they are on safe ground. You can bet Burnsides A Pocket of Whiskey will be in heavy rotation too.
