Cracker (An All Acoustic Evening) 8:30 p.m. @ THE HURRICANE
David Lowery and John Hickman of the 80s Alternative group Camper Van Beethoven, and the rootsier rockier band Cracker, are in KC doing their Cracker Camper Unplugged thang. You can look forward to hearing songs from both bands as well as some Johnny solo tunes. Unfortunately, back in my youth, I passed out on a friends huge bean-bag chair, affectionately named Floyd, with the Camper song Interstellar Overdrive on continuous play. It forever ruined me for the band from that point on. Cracker, on the other hand, was a favorite of mine in the 90s, when their single Low attacked the airwaves and I just couldnt seem to get enough of their Virgin Record releases Cracker Brand and Kerosene. SoI suggest you Come and spend some time with Mr. Wrong. -jaq

Boozeday Tuesday Matinee 8 10:30pm @ MIKES TAVERN
Featuring: The Return of the All Night Country Jam with Cody Wyoming, Heather & Robin of the Last Call Girls, and Dave "Chilidog" Crawford.
Apparently this line up happened quite a few times awhile back and from what I understand it's one not to be missed. It's been some 5+ years since Mr. Dave "Chilidog" Crawford has done his solo set. I caught him a couple years back playing a couple songs on someone else's bill and it is something to be heard. His lyrical comedic genius comes to light in such songs Chunky Belinda, Be My Valentine (Pabst Blue Ribbon), and Weekend Lesbians. -di

PROPS:
RauschHouse Screen Printing
Pups, we have to give a big shout out to our friend Kasey Rausch, KCs favorite little folk singer with the voice of and angel, and her family biz RaushHouse.
To all Musicians, bands, promoters, venues, restaurants etc., when you are in the market for some promotional gear (t-shirts, hats, tote bags, stocking cap, fleece jackets, childrens items, etc.) shoot Miss Kasey and email and support your local business.
They do a fantastic job as she has printed shirts for a couple of Sad Dog supported events such as the Crossroads Music Festival and Cowtown for Crawdads Benefit. I am here to tell you these Ts arent the kind you wear once to support the event then throw in the bin. Oh NO! These Ts are the soft and snuggly Ts that you are compelled to pick over the others. RauschHouse is being added to our list of local venues and businesses at the bottom of Sad Dog. So, when it comes to purchasing merch for your next tourvisit

And you have to check out her music at www.myspace.com/kaseyrausch

JAQS NOTES:
My weekend in rock started Friday night outside on the Knuckleheads patio for another fantastic night with Billy Joe Shaver, tellin his Texas outlaw tales with humor, whit, wisdom, spunk, pain, poetry and humility. Like a true country troubadour his story telling extends beyond his music, as he loves to paint the picture of how his songs were born. I urge you to get on out and buy his new release The Real Deal.

After the show ended, I moved as fast as my feet would take me to the El Torreon intending on making it just in time to see Lucero. I ran in the venue to literally hear the last note of what is one of my current favorite bands. I was crushed and since have been a frequent visitor to their website scoping out tour date and making plans of a road trip to get my fix. While I was there, I did get to hear a sampling of what is soon to be the new Golden Hearted Whores release. Yaaaaowzaaa!!! This is going to be a gem my friends. Playing loud over the El Torreon sound system I found myself dancin around the room.
Boys, lets get this mixed and get it in my paws, and SOON!

Saturday night I exited the Record Bar, which as much as I love this new venue, was proving to be a bit too over-stimulating for a girl who is into her sixth month of sobriety. I headed out to The Brick to catch a bit of Kirk Rundstroms Grain and Demise. A mix of good company and great music had me there until closing time. I have seen Kirks Grain and Demise in its various forms over the past year, all of which I enjoyed, all of which were comprised of talented musicians, and all of which made me jump up and start dancin when I heard Abilene, my favorite song off of the Binky Records release Same Ugly Town. However, it never fully grabbed me until Saturday. The current line-up is made up of Kirk Rundstom (guitar/vocals), Ryan Johnson (drums), Calvin Bennett (6-string bass), and the glue that makes this quartet go beyond enjoyable into, what was for me a bit mesmerizing at times, Bridget Law (fiddle and vocals). In that search for the perfect fit of musicians, Kirk has certainly found it in these four. I hear tell that this is the line-up that will soon head into the studio soon.

My weekend extended into Tuesday where I spent my first night at Mikes Tavern for Boozeday Tuesday, where my world was rocked by KCs own Ramalamas and Austins Honky! So, I once again turn up my nose to anyone who says they cant find any good music in this town.

DIS NOTES:
Despite all the great live music to hit these parts in the Fall, as the weather starts to cool I can't help myself -- I start looking towards Spring. In doing so tonight I paid a visit to www.sxsw.com, the internet home to South By Southwest, what's about to become a Spring ritual for me as I head down for my 2nd trip in Spring '06. The premiere American music festival takes place in Austin, TX every March. SXSW '06 (March 15 - 19) will feature keynote speakers, Judy Collins, Kris Kristofferson, and Billy Bragg. While the full conference registration is a bit pricey you can attend the music showcase by purchasing wrist band for just over a hundred bucks. It's a bargain. But, you'll need someone local to make the purchase for you. With over 1200 acts that's a packed schedule and the choices get tough. Hotels are starting to fill up now so no better time to start planning your trip. Bands interested in being a part of the showcase can apply online for $20. The November 7th deadline is quickly approaching so do it now. We'd love to see more Kansas City area bands make the showcase.

Devil Made Me Do It The First Time...

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14
Billy Joe Shaver @ KNUCKLEHEADS
9pm; $18 advance / $20 door
Well its probably a good thing Im going out of town this weekend because heres a real quandary, Billy Joe Shaver and Lucero in town on the same night. Billy Joe is a real treat my friends. A great American songwriter with a show that will have you laughing, crying and realizing that you are in the presence of greatness. Here are the notes from last weeks Sad Dog in case you missed it. His show was still the best $20 I spent last year.
NEW RELEASES: September 20 Billy Joe Shaver The Real Deal (Compadre Records)
.and that he is. Only last year was this great American songwriter inducted into the Nashville Songwriter Hall of Fame. Johnny Cash called him his favorite songwriter and hes written for Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Waylon Jennings, Bobby Bare, The Allman Brothers and Kris Kristofferson. Billy Joe has lived a life faced with hard tragedies and turned those tragedies into some of the best songs never to become hits. His autobiography Honky Tonk Hero was one of the saddest Ive read while still feeling his hope. Billy Joe makes it to these parts next Friday, October 14 at Knuckleheads. Pick up his new release or my favorite Unshaven: Live at Smiths Olde Bar (1995). But at the very least go to his show, you are likely to shed a tear, wear a grin or be moved to hug him after the show as I did last December. di

Lucero w/ Blackpool Lights, Decibilly, and Buffalo Saints @ EL TORREON
Di is right on when she speaks of the dilemma in deciding where to be this eve. I think the best plan is to mastermind a quick exit after Billy Joe and head straight down to the El Torreon, because Lucero just cant be missed. These boys from Memphis mix the punk, the rock, and the Americana, always bring on a kickin live show, and just keep putting out one great album after the next. Lately, their newest release, Nobodys Darlings, keeps waging war with their earlier releases, all vying for time in the disc player. For those of you who have your sights set straight on Lucero, get to the El Torreon early, as the line-up this eve is very juicy. -jaq

Namelessnumberheadman, and Ghosty @ THE BRICK

ZZ Top @ AMERISTAR CASINO
The three beard trio, Billy and Dusty sportin the long white face decoration, and Frank with the name, will most definitely be tearin it up the Casino. It must have been five years ago that I ran out to Sandstone, for you young pups Verizon Wireless Amphitheater, with the intent of seeing ZZ Tops opener, Son Volt, then heading on home. Well, of course I stuck around to catch some headlining licks but found myself jumping up and down screaming for an encore with the rest of the fans. Its worth it just to see their twin fuzzy slipper, spinning guitars. -jaq

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 16
The Litigators, and The Afterparty @ FRED P. OTTS
While The Litigators deserve some sort of Best Of KC win were just not buying the Best Blues Band title they were recently awarded by The Pitch here at Sad Dog HQ. Rock-n-Roll check; Soul check; Blues okay maybe sort of, they do utilize a harmonica. Titles and awards aside they are always a rock-n-roll delight with one of the best front men in Kansas City.

Gore Gore Girls, Jackie Oh!, and The Lucky Graves @ MIKES TAVERN
8pm
We had the opportunity to catch Detroits Gore Gore Girls at SXSW this year opening for The Paybacks. They have also toured with The Cramps, The Reverend Horton Heat, New York Dolls, The Ravonettes, and The Strokes. These lovely ladies present their brand of garage rock with a campy B-movie style that adds to the show. Opening is the newest addition to Kansas City music Jackie Oh!, featuring members of the Lust-R-Tones, Emma Feel and Shotgun Idols. Jackie Oh! is a mod-pop-punk-rock frenzy, combining elements of both the 77 punk rock explosion referencing such bands as the Clash and The Jam with a heavy dose of 60s beat and garage added for good measure.

Boozeday Tuesday Matinee 8 10:30pm @ MIKES TAVERN
Honky (Austin, TX), and The Ramalamas
I should be punished for not yet making it out to Boozeday Tuesday. I am one of those that have wished for early shows during the week and now here it is and Ive not been out to support it. Thats about to change as I make my inaugural patronage next week to catch Honky and the Ramalamas. Id be remiss not to mention that Honky features J.D. Pinkus for Butthole Surfers but also need to let you know that the two bands have little in common beyond that. Honkys southern fried rock stylings dont conger any of the psych rock of the Butthole Surfers, rather, that good old mix of hard edge rock-n-roll raised in the South. This is a great opportunity to get out and see a nationally touring band during the week, help them with that gas money and still get home to bed for that early Wednesday wake up call. -di

The Tossers, and Murphys Law @ THE GASLIGHT (Lawrence, KS)
Not only are The Tossers my favorite Celtic rock band they are one of my all time favorite bands. Traditional Irish instrumentation with punk rock ethos. Evidently influenced by The Pogues, these boys from Chicagos Southside have been doing their thing for 10+ years but rarely make it down our way. Dont try and keep up with these lads that embrace their libation - you will lose. The Irish take their drink very seriously and are well practiced. That doesnt mean it interferes with their show, only adds to it.
Antics ensue when these boys take the stage. Humorous, crass, full of attitude, their political, religious, and social commentary are the great makings of Irish story-telling rock-n-roll. -di

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 19
Black Fire Revelation, and Burning Fifteen @ THE BRICK
Black Fire Revelation is a New Orleans Punk/Metal Duo, one half born in Mississippi but raised in Tokyo, the other half hailing from Virginia. Throw in that they are on the blues record label, home of Jr. Kimbough, T-Model Ford and R.L. Burnside, and just off tour with Unsane, you have to wonder what the heck is going to come out of these boys.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8
Son Volt / North Mississippi Allstars / Split Lip Rayfield @ THE BEAUMONT SHOW (Outdoor Show)
Doors @ 6pm, Show starts @ 7pm.
Touring on his latest release Okemah and the Melody of Riot, his first release since 1998s Wide String Tremelo, Jay Farrar is back with all new players making up the ever-popular Americana favorite, Son Volt. The new line-up featuring Dave Bryson (Canyon) on drums, Andrew Duplantis (Alejandro Escovedo, Jon Dee Graham and Bob Mould) on bass and Brad Rice (The Backsliders, Ryan Adams and Tift Merritt) on guitar, will not disappoint old Son Volt fans or you new pups new to the Son Volt sound. I first saw the new line-up at Mississippi Nights in St. Louis last winter and was thoroughly satisfied and ecstatic to see the band re-formed, and back on the road again.
Joining Son Volt on the bill are the North Mississippi Allstars, crankin out their brand of psychedelic trance blues and electric country blues. NMAs new recording Electric Blue Watermelon, partially recorded at Sam Phillips Studio, features guest appearances by Lucinda Williams, Robert Randolf and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Be sure that this trio will have you shakin booty.
As if the line-up wasnt juicy enough, Lawrence/KC/Sad Dogs favorite psycho-bluegrass band Split Lip Rayfield will slap you in the face and get your motor revved up with the first note. This show takes stamina and these boys will knock you into another universe. -jaq

The Last of the V8s, and 400 Blows @ MIKES TAVERN

The Frames and Josh Ritter @ THE GRANADA
I dont know much about Dublin, Irelands The Frames, but Idaho folk singer-songwriter, Josh Ritter definitely caught my attention a few years back at a SXSW showcase. His release Golden Age of Radio is a must buy featuring my fav, his rollin down the tracks ballad Harrisburg and a tune called Lawrence, KS, which should be an obvious hit at the Granada. -jaq

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9
Dwight Yoakum w/ Hanna-Mceuen @ THE BEAUMONT CLUB (Indoor Show)
If you were at Sad Dog HQ right now you would hear me purrrrrring like a kitten at the thought of seeing Dwight. If Im gonna go country, this is the way I want to go. Since the day I bought Tomorrow Sounds Today it stays close to the player and I revert to his version of the Cheap Trick tune I Want You To Want Me when I am in the privacy of my car and get the urge to belt out a tune. -jaq

Black Diamond Heavies and The Bad Ideas @ FRED P. OTTS
Were beginning to wonder and hope if the Black Diamond Heavies arent local to Kansas City with their recent frequency to our local venues. Heres a band that wed be proud to call our own. Im telling you pups if you havent caught these East Nashville boys yet just do it. Youll be thanking us later. I picked up their CD the first time I saw them and it has taken up permanent residence in the changer. Countless times guests to the house or those passing my office at the day job stop to ask, whos that? di

Sleater-Kinney w/ The Gossip @ THE BOTTLENECK (Lawrence, KS)

The Fags @ REPLAY LOUNGE (Lawrence, KS)
A couple of years ago a Dallas Record Label, Idol Records, sampler Vital Idol fell into my lap. From this sampler I discovered a Denton, TX band Centro-Matic (fabulous) and Detroits The Fags. I fell in love with The Fags indie garage pop rock song List and was positive this would be a hit. Well, it hasnt become the hit, yet, but it is a hit in the world of Jaqs mix CDs. To me it is one of those perfect catchy pop tunes that should have everyone singing in the shower. Later that year they opened up for L.A. punk band X at the Madrid Theater. I didnt hear much of The Fags after that and I am thrilled to see that they have re-emerged and are out on tour. Humor me and check out List. It takes more energy than I can usually drum up these days to get me to drive to Lawrence for a show, but if I didnt already have a date with the Crowes, you could be sure I would be headed west for these cats. -jaq

NEW RELEASES
September 20 Billy Joe Shaver The Real Deal (Compadre Records)
.and that he is. But at the very least go to his show, you are likely to shed a tear, wear a grin or be moved to hug him after the show as I did last December. di

Big Sweet Life: the Songs of Jon Dee Graham (Recorded Live at the Continental Club, Austin, TX, June 24, 2005).
100% of proceeds benefit the Willie Graham/Legg-Perthes Fund.
December 2004 Jon Dee and Gretchen Grahams' son Willie was diagnosed with Legg-Perthes, a rare childhood bone disease. Two months after the diagnosis, their health insurance company filed for bankruptcy, which left Willie uninsurable because the disease is considered a pre-existing condition. Treatment is necessary and expensive, ranging from physical therapy to surgical intervention.
So a good friend of the family, Scrappy Jud Newcomb suggested a benefit from which was born an amazing night at Austin's Continental Club and a live recording of the night, "Big Sweet Life". This is one kickin' disc featuring an amazing mix of musicians. A few of the highlights include Honky w/ Jon Dee rockin' "October", Bob Schneider tearin' up "Laredo", The Resentments "I Will Walk With You", and check this out, Alejandro Escovedo, Charlie Sexton and Jon Dee Graham together on "Kings" and "The Best". And an amazing bonus, The Willie Graham Players made up of Jon Dee, Charlie Sexton, Alejandro Escovedo, Scrappy Jud Newcomb, Andrew Duplantis and John Chipman on a song written by Willie Graham called "Rock and Roll".
Big Sweet Life also comes with a DVD featuring live performances from the News 8 Rooftop by Patty Griffin, David Garza, Kelly Willis, The Gourds, and many more.
Great music, great musicians, undeniably a great reason to buy a disc!!
Visit www.jondeegraham.com for more information or to purchase your very own copy of Big Sweet Life. -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
I just wanted to give shout of congratulations to our Sad Dog friends that received a big Best Of in this weeks The Pitch Magazine. To name a few:
In The Pines (Best New Band) Purrrrrrrr!, my second purrrr of the night.
Knuckleheads Saloon (Best Blues Club) Love that kickin patio.
Bacon Shoe (Best Live Act) Yeah Right! Side piercing fun.
Roman Numerals (Best Sexy Musicians Male) New bar and Best Sexydont let it go to your heads boys.
Litigators (Best Blues Band) Definitely deserve Best Of something, but (Best Blues Band)?
Sonic Spectrum, KCUR 89.3 (Best Radio Show) You should spend a Saturday with Robert Moore pups.
Fred P. Otts (Best Live Music Night) Best place to stay out late on a school night.
Wakarusa (Best Music Festival) How happy am I!?
Now, to bed, as there is much music to enjoy this week.

DIS NOTES:
Kansas City did something pretty cool last Monday. The Cowtown for Crawdads benefit organized by New Orleans native Jim Ligon was a glowing success with proceeds going to Tipitinas Artist Relief Fund. Hopefully the mighty fine displaced musicians from the New Orleans area will be back in instruments, gigs and homes soon. New Orleans cant be the city it once was without its music and it was nice to see a benefit, in the spirit of music, raise so much for something so important. Thanks to everyone who shared the stage, placed their bids in the silent auction and gave a little more as Etta Vendetta made her way through the crowd. Ms. Vendetta raised $136 all on her own with her saucy ways. Not bad sister. Its Over, The Gaslights, The Afterparty, Anvil Chorus, Roman Numerals you rocked and made the cash flow all that much more quickly and easily.
