JAQS NOTES:
Wow! I am still reeling from the Hearers CD release show last night at The Brick.
It was the perfect kick-off to a holiday weekend. Walking into the familiar venue on McGee was more like walking into a family fiesta than a rock show. It seemed every time I turned around I fell into a hug from a friend. The show was sold out but die-hard fans and friends waited over a half hour in the cold hoping to get a chance to check out this eclectic 9-piece indie, experimental folk ensemble. Those who did get their tail in the door early got quite a treat as The Hearers put on one extraordinary show. It is rare that we get to hear this group live since many of the members now live outside of Kansas City. Despite their distance they were able to record their sophomore release Don Make the Captain Cry (Anodyne Records) and put on the show of a well-oiled machine after just one practicethe day of the show. Watching them was like watching old friends that get together after a long absence but pick up right where they left off, only to enjoy a flawless run of conversation as if they talk every day. I cant leave out that American Catastrophe jump-started the evening with another fantastic set of songs off of their new release Excerpts From The Broken Bone Choir. Unfortunately I had to leave before I The Occupation hit the stage.
Needless to say, my holiday weekend is off to a fantastic start. My belly is full and I managed to successfully pull off my first Thanksgiving in the Chef coat. I cooked for a crowd of two, and being that one was a dear friend and one was my father, I got many kudos whether deserved or not. A friend of mine once started a journal listing something for which she was thankful every day of the year. Appropriately, she began this journal of thanks onyes you guessed itThanksgiving. Ive been thinking that today I should start one for myself. Luckily, due to the events of the past couple of days, my journal is already filled up to New Years.

DIS NOTES:
Last Saturday I was hitting the road before dawn. Heading up to Iowa to mom's house to spend some time and feast with the relatives. I had 3-1/2 hours in the car of uninterrupted music listening. That simply never happens for me, and, well, we all know how important that road trip music selection can be. Recognizing the early hour and understanding that I'd barely be into my first cup of Joe before hitting 35 North I decided to leave the AC/DC, Cretin 66, and Supersuckers (standard road-ware) behind and ease into my vacation on a kinder and gentler, and likely more educational note. A couple months back I picked up "Johnny Cash The Legend", a 4-disc radio documentary celebrating 50 years of Johnny Cash recordings, at a charity auction. It was time to give it the first go. Narrated by Rodney Crowell, the music of the Man In Black is accompanied by the words of John Cash himself as well as several celebrity and family interviews. I slipped the first disc, "The American Dream", into the player as I pulled away from the curb at 5:46am. Hellfire and brimstone, truckers be warned, that girl in the 4-cyclinder was starting her trip off with J.C.'s most raucous and sing-along-worthy hits. Reflecting on the early years of Cash's career as well as his childhood and his first introduction to the guitar I knew I couldn't have made a better selection for this specific trip. It wasn't Sunday but about the time I was ready to pour the 3rd cup of coffee it was time for Disc 2 "How Great Thou Art", an examination into the spiritual life of Johnny Cash. Feeling the pain and redemption, and his bout with demons and salvation, I found myself wanting to sit with that awhile. I'm leaving Disc 3 & 4, "Man In Black", and "The World Needs a Melody: The Storyteller", for my return trip to KC, a trip in the car I'm rather looking forward to.

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 18
The Litigators, The Uprights and Jackie Oh! @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
Jackie Oh! Oh not. It seems the boys ran into a bit of copy write infringement when myspace.com recently ejected them. Not wanting to go mano y mano with Ms. Kitty Kelley over rights to the title of her 1984 biography of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, they've relinquished the name and will introduce their new moniker Saturday night.
In other news, The Litigators are still a performance to be reckoned with. Show goers watch your noggins. The flying mic of Mr. Jeremiah Kidwell has no aim or consideration when they boys get going. They are known to mix some soul damnation with their rock lambasting, leaving no one capable of minding their own wits. Be safe out there.

Jett Black, Joey Skidmore and Big Iron @ MIKES TAVERN
In the ever touring madness that is Reverend Horton Heat, Jett Black is yet another band that has held the opening slot on one of their tours. Hailing from Denver I dig what I hear on their website and they link to a couple of Sad Dog favs - Supersuckers and Throw Rag - and dare to call them friends. I'm called away from town this weekend but if I was KCMO bound I'd be checking this out. -di

Tony Bennett @ AMERISTAR
A girl can shake to her rock, a girl can sway to her country. She can throw down for punk and throw up a paw for the metal. But where would should be without the love of a Crooner every once in awhile? It's a pricey ticket but if you are willing to pay the price Mr. Tony Bennett's one of the best and we'd be doing a disservice not to mention it here.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19
Brother Trucker, Pendergast and The Bad Ideas @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
This will be one hot night of Americana/Roots Rock N Roll. First of all, our boys Pendergast are fresh from the studio and ready to wrap us up in their web of new tunes, which will hopefully be available on disc very soon. Here at Sad Dog HQ their first release Truth About Saturday Night has been worn to the bones and we cant wait to get our paws on those luscious new songs. With them this evening, are The Bad Ideas, badass honky-tonk led by one hell of a singer/songwriter John Stubblefield. And for one night only, The Good Reverend Doctor, Preacher of the Good Word of the Gospel of Rock and Roll (aka Tony Ladesich) will hop behind the drum kit to bang the skins for The Bad Ideas. And if that wasnt juicy enough, Andy Fleming and the rest of the Brother Trucker clan will make the trip from Oklahoma and hit that little stage on Main Street. It will be a whiskey drinkin, cigarette smokin, get down and dirty roots rockin night not to be missed! Theres nothing like a band fresh from the studio unleashed to the stage.

Not much you can write about The Dwarves without risking corporate spam filter stopage aside from letting you know they put on one outrageous show, fall under the punk/hardcore genre, and count a Spin Magazine title in possession with their 2000 release "Blood, Guts, and P*ssy" as "the Most Offensive Album of All Time". Also on the bill are NYC's outstanding surf-punk outfit Turbo A.C.'s.

The Hearers (CD Release), American Catastrophe and The Occupation @ THE BRICK
Yaaaaahoooooo! It is always a treat to learn that the nine members of The Hearers have found themselves in close enough proximity to each other to converge on the stage at The Brick. Combined they have quite an impressive resume lending their talents to such bands as Parlay, Split Lip Rayfield, Unstoppable Thought Leopards, The Caves, The Throttlers, The Shut-Ins and Drowning Incident. An eclectic group of musicians, they combine indie, experimental and folk, creating a sound that it is almost too unique to describe. Tonight they will unveil their new release on Anodyne Records Dont Make The Captain Cry. Fittingly, they will be joined this evening by KC bands American Catastrophe, also out with a new release, Excerpts From the Broken Bone Choir (see review below) and The Occupation.

RELEASES:
American Catastrophe Excerpts From The Broken Bone Choir
Dark and passionate, dreamy and macabre, mysterious and sensuous, the songs on this first release by Kansas City band American Catastrophe could easily be the musical backdrop to the written work of Edgar Allen Poe. Undeniably, Excerpts From the Broken Bone Choir would make Poe proud, right down to the packaging, which has to be some of the most creative and enticing packaging I have come across to date. A black paper envelope, embossed with a raven on a hatchet, stamped with the American Catastrophe notary seal, and closed with blood red letter sealing wax. I will stop there as to not spoil all of the surprises. Needless to say, you should most definitely make room in on the ol CD case and procure a copy of your very own. -jaq

Looks like well be making an addition to the ol Christmas list.

OTHER NEWS:
Walk The Line out in theaters Friday, November 18
The buzz is all about Walk The Line, the film that tells the story of the love affair between Johnny Cash and June Carter. Directed by James Mangold and based on Cashs books Man In Black and Cash The Autobiography, this film has been hyped to the hilt and rarely is mentioned without the word Oscar following close behind. Of course I will be pawing my way into the theater to check it out this weekend, but I will head to my seat a bit anxious. I have tried my best to stay removed from the hoopla so I dont go in with expectations that could ruin the experience. I am most ambivalent about the live performances in the film, as Joaquin Phoenix (playing Johnny) and Reese Witherspoon (playing June), sing every note of the live performances in the film. The renditions of songs Johnny and June made famous can only come off two waysthe first, as beautiful a re-creation as Sissy Spacek playing Loretta Lynn in Coal Miners Daughter, or second, a complete train wreck. There is no almost when singing the songs of Johnny and June, as Johnny and June. I am a bit optimistic however, as I think the casting of Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash could not have been better. Throw in the casting of singer/songwriter Shelby Lynne as Carrie Cash, and Shooter Jennings (son of Waylon and Jessi Colter) as his daddy Waylon Jennings himself, and you have the making of one fun film if nothing else. -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
Yeah, what Di said!!!!

DIS NOTES:
I haven't conversed with my co-pilot as to what she is taking under wing to write about this week. But if she goes this way and we're doing double duty, so be it, it was that good. We took in Bettye Lavette at The Hurricane earlier this week and there's no dog that's gonna keep me from writing about it. As a music appreciator, with no talent of her own, I yearn for those moments when I'm moved. I wouldn't spend time doing this if I wasn't a true searcher of that which moves me in music and be called upon to share it with whom ever will listen. It's taken the form of many sweat drenched Sin City Disciples atomic blues freak outs, drawn from important conversation by my first Pendergast show, Lucinda Williams telling stories from my life, a basement listening of The Feelies "Only Life", Bruce Springsteen giving his all for no less than 4 hours in the, 80's, Bad Brains at the Outhouse,, and the first time I laid ears on Helen Merrill. This week I had one of those moments that bring to life that passion. I found it on an early Tues. eve at an unlikely venue in a woman that's got balls. She's all woman but dares to release that raw emotion that is found oh too rarely in any genre or gender. She's drawn comparisons to Tina and Aretha and it baffles the mind why Bettye isn't recognized in the same vain with even more praise. She felt it, we felt it. They call it soul for a reason and she gave graciously. I'd like to thank friends Kasey Rausch and Sarah Beasley for giving us the heads up and letting us know this was a show not to be missed. And if I look like that at 60 (better than I did at 30) life has been good to me. Santa will find her entire catalog on my Christmas list.

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4
Amy Farrand, The Rounders (Oklahoma City), and The Ramalamas @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
What a great night of music! First you have the multi-talented singer/songwriter/drummer/guitarist/bassist Amy Farrand (Shotgun Idols, American Catastrophe). We dont know what she will pull out of her bag of tricks this eve, but you can guarantee it will be well worth getting to Daveys in a timely fashion so that you dont miss her performance. Along with Ms. Farrand this eve is Rounder from Oklahoma with their bluesy rock/Americana sound. One of our Sad Dog friends caught these guys recently in Tulsa and is highly suggesting we check em out. Thanks Jen for the heads up! Topping off the evening is KCs maximum punk and soul quartet the Ramalamas.
This night is jam packed with talent and should prove to be one eclectic night of music.

The Grand Marquis and Drakkar Sauna @ THE BRICK
I just opened and email from the Grand Marquis and they were kind enough to remind me that tomorrow is another First Friday art walk in the Crossroads district. What a great nightcap to spending a beautiful night checking out KC artists than heading over to 1733 McGee and catching a show. The Grand Marquis always prove to shell out a lively night of what they call Jumpin Blues and Hot Swinging Jazz. With them this evening is Drakkar Sauna. And I hope they dont mind, but I borrowed the Grand Marquis description of Drakkar, talented rootsy folky hillbilly stompin duo, because it was too juicy and enticing not to share. Tonight is the night to show off your dance moves. -jaq

I remember putting on the Dolly tunes as a kid and singing every word to every song, Jolene, Coat of Many Colors, My Tennessee Mountain Home Love Is Like A Butterfly, Joshua, and many more. When it comes to country she is the real thing! She grew up on a Tennessee farm, one of 12 children and was performing on the Grand Ole Opry by 13. She inspired an entire theme park, Dollyworld, for crying out loud! She is currently touring on her new release Those Were The Days featuring special guests Judy Collins, Alison Krauss, Kris Kristofferson, Roger McGuinn and many more. This little lady is a living legend and my childhood would not have been the same without her music. For those of you who still think Whitney Houston originally sang I Will Always Love You, run, not walk, to the record store, purchase a Dolly retrospective and take a listen to the real thing. -jaq

Boozeday Tuesday Matinee 8 10:30pm @ MIKES TAVERN
Featuring: Tarbox Ramblers and Mike Ireland
Tarbox Ramblers are a foursome that hail from Cambridge, MA. Honestly, I had never heard of them but saw them on the line up for an upcoming Boozeday Tuesday so I hopped onto the trusty internet to see what they are all about. Continuing to tour in support of the 2004 release "A Fix Black East" we are in for a treat next week. With upright bass, a little slide guitar, a fiddle and mix of percussion, topped by unvarnished vocals create a haunting sinister aura to their unique flavor. At times a smothering dirty delta blues they also explore early century Americana, hillbilly gospel and a bit of honky tonk. Fans of KC locals In the Pines, American Catastrophe or the Hearers would do well to check these guys out. The sampling of songs I was able to find isn't enough. I'll be there and will likely walk out with their entire catalog. Their most recent produced by Jim Dickinson (Lucero, Aretha Franklin, Big Star, The Replacements, etc., etc.) -di

Art Opening: The Art of Jacob Weller @ THE MERCY SEAT (210 E. 16th Street)
Normally we stick to the musical arts here at Sad Dog HQ, but I have to drift from the norm this week in order to urge you to explore the artwork of my friend Jacob.
His current work is an exploration of different cultural and art historical influences, creating a cross cultural and integrated view of humanity that focuses on similarities, rather than differences. I have always enjoyed his art and I hope you take the chance to enjoy it as well. Congratulations Jacob!
His work will be displayed through the month of November and the opening reception is happening Friday, November 4 (7p Midnight).

MusicRelief.org Another friend of mine, Jeremy Goldstein, along with Ed Hickey, Brock Batten and Travis Millard, are doing something really wonderful with their new site musicrelief.org. This non-profit organization was founded and developed by artists in response to the natural disasters that have recently ravaged the world. All of the proceeds generated on this site are donated to three charities, Tamils Rehabilitation Organization, Doctors Without Borders and American Cancer Society. The beauty of this endeavor is that it is a long-term commitment looking beyond the struggles we are facing today. This is a very cool site. I hope you all visit it soon.

JAQS NOTES:
Bettye LaVette: Ive Got My Own Hell to Raise
There are many ways I discover new musiclive shows, magazines, web surfing, Sonic Spectrum, Cypress Avenue, KKFIbut sometimes the music just finds me. That would be the case with this powerful Detroit Soul Singer, Ms. Bettye LaVette. Her music found me, and kept finding me. A few weeks ago I suggested some albums for your listening pleasure as we moved into the fall months. I was in the mood to make some new musical purchases and asked for suggestions. Kasey Rausch, came back to me with Betty LaVette. Then, shortly after making my purchase, while I was still digesting this new find, Sad Dog HQ receives an email from Sarah Beasley, another woman whose judgement I fully trust, urging us to check out, yes, Betty LaVette. It was official, she found me.

This disc is a gem my friends. LaVette has been singing soul for about four decades now, and it seems she is finally getting her deserved recognition with this new release. The ten tracks on the disc are all covers, or in LaVettes case re-workings, of songs by female songwriters Rosanne Cash, Sinead OConnor, Dolly Parton, Joan Aratrading, Aimee Mann, Sharon Robinson, Cathy Majeski/John Scott Sherrill, Toni Brown, Fiona Apple, and my favorite, Lucinda Williams. She had me sold on her knock-out gritty rendition of Lucindas Joy on the first note. See, LaVette doesnt just cover tunes, she devours them, makes them her own, uses the skeleton but gives it a entirely new life. She has been compared, and in my opinion most definitely can be compared, to great soul singers such as Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin and even Otis Redding.
Heres the kickerMark your calendar pups because Ms. Bettye LaVette will be at the Hurricane, November 15 and we need to give her a huge KC welcome.

DIS NOTES:
Ever laugh so hard you were brought to tears and woke up the next day with sore face and abdomen muscles? Yea, me too. Most recently after taking in this weeks Boozeday Tuesday featuring Dave Chilidog Crawford, Cody Wyoming and Robin and Heather of The Last Call Girls. The foursome shared the stage switching off amongst their chosen originals and covers in what is known as The All Night Country Jam. This little line up happened quite frequently some years back and we were shown a much appreciated rebirth Tuesday night at Mikes Tavern. Regrets for you sorry souls that didnt make it out. I have begged for you all that well get to see it again, well see if my pleading pays off. Dave Chilidog Crawford showed his prowess by picking up the acoustic he laid down some 5+ years ago when he last played these songs out live in KC. Lets hope he has found the taste and well see him more often. Songs about weekend lesbians, his somewhat unnatural love of PBR, yearning to be a homosexual because they get all the pretty girls and the good cocaine, being too f---ed up to f---, his attraction for the more curvy Belinda Carlisle, and the sexual excellence of hippy girls simply must be shared with the masses. He is a lyrical comic genius which nearly shadows his catchy tunes. Word has it he has somewhat of a strong reluctance to ever record his mastery which is just sad. Chilidog did steal the show as his stage mates will undoubtedly attest to but Cody Wyoming proved once again why he is referred to as the human jukebox and the lovely ladies of The Last Call Girls made us proud with their wit and wisdom of why its not always good to be such a lovely lady. These folks are good for the mental health and I reckon the country.
