KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR PUPS! As 2005 comes to an end, we would like to thank you all for supporting our efforts in bringing you the skinny on whats happening in live music!
We hope you stick with us and continue to support your local musicians in 2006.

SAD DOG TRIVIA:
This weeks winner gets added to the guestlist + 1 to Donkey Show 10 Mule Tide Cheer @ RECORD BAR Friday, December 30. The winner must be able to answer one of the questions unless trumped by someone who can answer both. .
QUESTION #1: Last week, Jaq listed in her notes a list of local releases. Name the Band/Artist and the album of (2) of the releases on her list.
QUESTION #2: At Donkey Show V111 Masquerade Ball, local musician and Donkey Show regular, Cody Wyoming performed in this Western Surf Outfit. What is the name of that band?
Deadline to turn in your answers is 5pm, Friday, December 30th.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 30
PBR Presents with Spice of Life Productions
Donkey Show 10 Mule Tide Cheer @ RECORD BAR
Wear your worst holiday sweater or tie and get $2 off the cover. 9pm Sharp
Grand Marquis: Kansas Citys finest jump blues and swing band will apparently be taking a new approach at Donkey Show with a bit of Dixieland jazz. www.grandmarquis.net
Kelihans: This Celtic band features members of the Pornhuskers, Parlay, Last Call Girls, and The KC5. www.kelihans.com
The Bad Ideas: Bootstompin good times with some rockin country. They have recently brought The Rumblejetts drummer into the fold.
Sugar Puppy and Her Lovely Dumplings: It wouldnt be a Donkey Show without Sugar Puppy and Her Lovely Dumplings. Burlesque in nature, this one woman show brings big laughs with every performance. www.sugarpuppy.net
Kundalini: The belly dancers are back!
The Monitor: Cody Wyoming graces the stage for yet another Donkey Show appearance. Hes been in many, always with something new. This time joined by Devin Blair (Lust-R-Tones / Seaside Riot), and John Ferguson (Federation of Horsepower / Bacon Shoe).
They describe their music as Totalitarian Dark Wave. In other words, techno goth except instead of songs about the dark abyss of the soul they prefer to discuss fascism, totalitarianism and Orwellian paranoia in their lyrics.
Axe Capoiera: Brazilian Martial Arts Exhibition
The last time they performed at a Donkey Show the audience was captivated.
Precious Flower: A poet with a naughty mouth.
Sleazebeats: Some bawdy vaudeville
Tom Moriarity: Kansas City thespian will present a performance piece consisting of only a mountain bike and his voice.

JAQS NOTES:
Happy Happy New Year Pups! I have been remiss in the past couple of months by not sharing one of my recent favorite sites with you all, There Stands The Glass. This site is the brainchild of a dear friend of mine who, in my opinion, possesses more knowledge when it comes to music than anyone I know. He goes by the moniker Happy In A Bag and this site he has created provides musical insight unlike most any I have visited. I will draw a few words from the site to begin describing what its all about. This site is designed to increase sales of overlooked and forgotten music. It also showcases music yet to be discovered. Recordings currently in Amazon.coms top 20,000 music sellers will not be posted here, and all music will come from my collection. And one hell of a collection it is. Current albums included and highlighted on the site are R.L. Burnside Death Bell Blues and an old favorite of mine Soul Asylum And The Horse They Rode In On. He lists his favorite MP3 Blogs, favorite music links and his 2005 Top Ten which includes The National Alligator (once again I lag behind and I am just getting into this band), White Stripes Get Behind Me Satan (I do dig it!), and Bettye LaVette Ive Got My Own Hell to Raise (one of the best live performances I had the privilege to see in 2005).
Happy In a Bag, my friend, I have been thoroughly enjoying your words of musical wisdom and I am sorry it has taken me so long to share my love of your site with our Sad Dog readers. Everyone BE SAFE THIS WEEKEND! http://therestandstheglass.blogspot.com/

DIS NOTES:
Back to the grind after a very festive holiday season and things were just a little slow this week. So for amusement I hopped online to find a little distraction. I was met with a very disheartening headline, Carey Takes Lead for Best Selling Album of 2005. Things just arent right in the world when thats the top headline and for me it is about as bad as any of the natural disasters weve read about so much this year. The marketing machine aside, is the worlds taste for music that bad? I just dont get it. Granted I have never once listened to a Mariah Carey record. The way she hits that high octave range sounds like nails on a chalk board to me no better than screeching as far as Im concerned. Hoping for some insight into how this could happen I continued to read and learned that she is now tied for No. 2, with Elvis no less, for most No. 1 hits. If she approaches the Beatles lead seat well surely know the apocalypse has arrived. The shadow of it has surely appeared. Its been a mission of ours here at Sad Dog HQ not to waste space or your time on things we hate so excuse my indiscretion. I only do this in hopes that you pups run out buy music of quality and spread the word for the betterment of humanity and our collective future litters.

JAQ & DIS NOTES:
Hey Pups! The following list may look a bit familiar, as well it should. A few weeks ago we put out the following list of local gems for your Holiday Gift List. As Di is home for the holidays and I am up to my neck in wrapping and bows getting ready for the weekend, time for writing is limited. If any of you are like me, you are counting down your minutes of shopping left before the big gift-giving day. So, I thought is might be helpful to remind you of all the local goodies out there just waiting to find a home a stocking. Obviously, it is a bit late to make an online purchase. However, you can head down to Recycled Sounds at the intersection of Westport Road and Main, as they make a habit of keeping most local releases in stock.
Support your local musicians and have a very Happy and Safe Holiday!

JAQS NOTES:
Hey Pups! I have to be brief this week as I was up much too early for workthen I was treated to a day at the spa. Ahhhh, I love the holidays. Today I have gone from 5am, alert and focused, to complete relaxation by 2pm. After the facial and massage (around 4pm) I discovered a burst of energy, which at the present time (around 8pm), has dramatically plummeted. So, I leave you this cold winter eve as I reach for my newest Netflix arrival Lucero: Bright Stars on Lonesome Nights, the documentary of these southern indie rockers on the road and in the studio. I will give you a complete report next week in Sad Dog.
Ive decided that Netflix should be an official sponsor of Sad Dog. Anyone have connections?

DIS NOTES:
Tis the season for..well, apparently to be sick and/or too busy to get out and catch any live music. And here I go again, headed out of town, with a lousy cold in tow for some family holiday time. Im going to miss the match of the season tomorrow night a Mikes with Mods vs. Rockers. Im typically too diplomatic to put in writing on which side I would fall but hell, GO ROCKERS!! That is the true root of all that is good is it not? Okay maybe not but on this night I have a feeling the Mods may be in over their head collective heads. Im sure youll put up a good fight Seaside Riot and Lust-r-Tones I do dig your sounds and on more than one occasion the Lust-r-Tones have had me shakin my grove thing. But a head to head match against Shotgun Idols and The Ramalamas will likely see the fashionable ones leaving with their ties between their legs. Ill expect a full report and photos upon my return. And if one of you fine swanky pups wouldnt mind pickin me up one of those special CDs I certainly would appreciate it. You all behave yourselves and dont let this little bout go mano y mano.

Frosty Paws

Woke up this morning, blues around my head
No need to ask the reason why
Went to the kitchen and lit a cigarette
Blew my worries to the sky
 John Lennon

Today Yoko Ono sat in meditation at her Dakota apartment in New York City, candles lit in the window to show her support to the fans congregated outside to remember John Lennon, as today marked the 25th Anniversary of his tragic death. Lennons fans traditionally observe a moment of silence at 10:50 PM, the moment Lennon was shot 25 years ago outside the Dakota Apartment building. In that moment someone lost her love, children lost their father and the world lost one of the prolific and loved musicians of all time. Lennon, one of four musicians who made up a little band called the Beatles, was committed to pacifism and wrote what may be the anthem for peace, his song Imagine. I am sure there were many conversations today of where you were when you heard the news of Lennons death. Millions heard the news from Howard Cosell on Monday Night Football, when against the wishes of the network, he interrupted his play by play of the game to make the announcement. Wherever you were or whomever you were with, for true music fans the moment will forever be etched in our brains.
Today, due to snow delays, or perhaps lack of motivation due to the cold and snow, I found myself driving to work around the 10:00AM hour and tuned into KKFI. Mike Murphy was on air and I believe the program was Your Midday Medley. He dedicated the show to John Lennon, playing not only Lennon tunes but Lennon tunes covered by other artists as well. By the time I rolled into the parking garage at work the car radio was blasting and after finding a parking spot I spent a few moments listening, singing out loud and missing a man I only new through song.

RELEASES:
The Gaslights Lines and Wires: 12 Tracks of Prairie Rock
Last Saturday night we headed out to Daveys Uptown and were met by a packed house all to support KCs Americana Rock favs, The Gaslights, and get our paws on a copy of this new release. As always it proved to be one whiskey filled eve and no one could stop groovin to the new tunes. This release couldnt have come at a better time, as their first release Midwest Hotel became a quick fav and one now well worn. As expected, this sophomore release shells out all of the goodies of the first and then some.

JAQS NOTES:
A friend of mine, thanks Kirk, turned me on to www.pandora.com, which is currently blowing my mind. On this site you can essentially create your own radio stations. Pandora describes itself as a music discovery service designed to help you find and enjoy music that youll lovepowered by the Music Genome Project, the most comprehensive analysis of music ever undertaken. I will let you head to the site and read up on the Music Genome Project yourself. The way it works: you create a new station by picking a band, I picked Uncle Tupelo. From that band music is selected based on the MGP and it begins to play tunes from various artists. From Uncle Tupelo my station played Bruce Cockburn, Calexico, Belle & Sebastion and Richard Thompson. It was going great until it slipped in Sister Hazel. But heres the kicker. Once it selects a song that you dont like, you go to the Guide Us button where you can select I dont like this song and it will adjust the station playlist as often as you like. The great thing about Pandora is that the songlist available is very extensive, and as your station plays, you have the opportunity to discover loads of new artists you have never heard before. If you like the new artist, you can immediately link to I-Tunes or Amazon and make a purchase. I know, a little dangerous, but a ton of fun. You can create an account for free, which allows you to listen to unlimited streaming, maintain up to 100 stations at a time and access your stations from any computer. The catch seems to be that you have the option to pay a certain fee per year (around $36.00) to not receive advertising. So far it is a young company and we havent discovered where the advertisements would pose much of an annoyance. However, we anticipate that they will need to garner funds from somewhere, and eventually the advertising will be such that you will want to pay to not have the interruption. In any case, it is a fun site and well worth spending some time poking around.

DIS NOTES:
Well my friendsif you think you are feelin the chill this week, our friend Diana is spending a few days in St. Paul, MN for work. We will all have to buy her a nip of holiday cheer to warm her up when she returns. As always, she is missed when away but will be back from the frosty North and back with us next week in Sad Dog.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3
The Gaslights Lines and Wires CD Release, with Vago (Omaha, NE) and the return of Slimm Spins @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
Its like that feeling the first time you go to see a friends band, you hope youll dig it and not have to rally some expression like, youve got potential or crush them with brutal honesty. Such is that anticipation with the coming of one of your favorite bands sophomore release. As much as you know they got it in em you know the potential is there to leave you yearning for something that lives up to the first time. The Gaslights done good, and prove that they own twang and roll. We here at SAD DOG HQ were lucky enough to get our paws on an early copy just days ago. Capturing all the heart their songs possess while still carrying some mass market appeal in all the very good ways the kind that break a classic. Capturing visions from the road in Lines and Wires, chasing ambition in A Place to Fall, and the most rousing of their live songs Gods, Guns and Glory makes you want to kick as much diplomatic ass as seeing it live.only this time you can do it again, again, and again. Tonight The Gaslights Lines and Wires hits the streets and theyre marking the event with a party at Daveys Uptown, a most fitting and likely only venue for such an occasion. Do yourself a favorfind yourself at Daveys bellied up to Mokies backroom bar, order up a whiskey, make your way to stage front, take a look to your right, and you will likely see a Sad Dog face rockin out right along with you. Lets enjoy the show. And most importantly, dont leave without a of copy of Lines and Wires for your collection. -di

This one however, has flown way under the radar until just this week. Well be doing our darndest to catch em before we head over to Daveys for The Gaslights release. Battle of The One Man Band 8pm @ THE BRICK
There he goes again, making us look bad with his wealth of ingenuity and motivation. The one man wreckin machine, Mr. John Ferguson, aka The Black Glove, aka Johnny Catfish, aka Toine, the brain child behind Band Scramble, the philanthropist, and the one who still has time to rock-it in Bacon Shoe, Federation of Horsepower, and to keep his lovely bride Megan happy. He partners with The Brick again in yet another effort to bring creativity to the masses. His last endeavor, Band Scramble mixed up musicians from the drawing of a hat to create new bands, new songs, some of which still perform today. Such is Anvil Chorus and the recently dispersed Silver Shore (both Pitch Best-Of nominees). This time around hes challenged the brave to create 15 minutes of original material in solo capacity with the instrumentation they so choose. With few rules:
No cover material, no material sequenced ahead of time and it must be the work of only one performer. The competition was fierce the last time he rallied such a challenge and the talk went on for weeks. Put this one on your docket for next week. And, stay tuned for details regarding Band Scramble III.

Hello Pups!
We just wanted to send out a "heads up" regarding the Reverend Horton Heat, Supersuckers, Split Lip Rayfield show at the Beaumont Club this eve, Thursday, December 1.

Do to a scheduling conflict, The Supersuckers will not be able to make to the show this evening. Although the Supersuckers will be missed, Lawrence duo Drakkar Sauna has been added to the bill and local favs Split Lip Rayfield will take the stage for a longer set!!

This is still a show not to be missed as it will be a night filled with crazy hard driving Punk-A-Bluegrass and rip roaring
Punk-A-Billy. Get your rockin' shoes on as this line-up is set to warm you up on a chilly December eve!
