FRIDAY, JANUARY 27

The Safes, Thee Fine Lines, and Seaside Riot @ MIKES TAVERN

Its always a treat when the OMalley brothers, who make up The Safes from Chicago, pay our city a visit. Once again they are accompanied by a terrific line-up at Mikes tonight. All bands share that vintage power-pop, garage sound so wear your best dancing kicks. The Safes dropped us a CD of their new songs that weve been diggin this week --  proving that a good thing can get better. The new tunes have more of a pop edge, but still hold onto that rock sensibility. The Safes were my reward a couple years back when I made my way to P. Otts on a Sunday to catch something new only to become one of those bands not to miss when they head our way. -di

Myers is back with the boys and ready to unleash their atomic junk blues on the fearless Sunday night. Were proud to call them one of our collective best finds of 2005. If you have ever paid heed to our suggestions this is one that commands your attention and action. Dont miss it pups.

Aimee Mann w/ Adam Levy @ LIBERTY HALL (Lawrence)

Aimee Mann has all the IT guys in my Company twisted-up and listening. They quickly reminded me of the Til Tuesday days (Voices Carry) some time ago and directed me to our shared ITunes so I could reap in the brilliance of Manns solo catalog. She was brutalized last year at SXSW for her dismissive non-chalance approach in performanceand still her fan base is lively and headstrong. Rock on sisterkeep the boys talking come Monday! -di

Asylum Street Spankers @ KNUCKLEHEADS SALOON

This Austin group is unique to say the least. Drawing on every genre of music available mixing pop, rock, show tunes, jazz, Dixieland, poetry, calypso you name it. They started out vowing to be forever unplugged, however, I hear these days they have taken to pluggin in on occasion. Armed with a wide variety of instruments, harmonica, guitar, upright base, ukulele, banjo, fiddle, and again, you name it. A show filled with wild wit, this group is saucy, and at times, a little naughty. They are currently pimping their new release, Re-Assembly, pegging it the Ultimate Spankers DVD Experience. The disc provide three hours and twenty-nine songs of concert footage from their 10th Anniversary show, when twenty-one Spankers reunited. Visit their site and get a glimpse of this crazy bunch. -jaq

FILM:

Hustle and Flow (2005) Out on DVD

This Sundance Audience Winner Award-winner is a great pick for music lovers of all types. I had the opportunity to see it in the theatre at first release, and I must say, this one packs a punch. Hustle is the story of Djay (Terrance Dashon Howard) a pimp with high hopes of breaking out of the Memphis hood by becoming the next big name in Rap. It has all the elements to get you hooked, catchy tunes, phenomenal acting, stellar storyline, humor and heartbreak.

Make it your weekend flick. jaq

JAQS NOTES:

Lucero: Bright Stars on Lonesome Nights
Lucero is Ben Nichols (Vocals/Guitar), Roy Berry (Drums), John C.
Stubblefield (bass) and Brian Venable (guitar)
I finally, yes finally, sat my behind down and popped in the ol Lucero documentary. So here it is pups, my take on the story of one of my all time favorite bands. Yes, I just laid it out like that, one of my all time favorite bands.

When I write about Lucero, I am always searching for the perfect words to describe them. I usually come up with something along the lines of "they are Memphis punk rock kids
gone the way of country with raw intensity and drive, playing as if  they are playing for their life." And it seems I was not off base as all of those words are prevalent throughout the film. But where does it come from, this intensity, this drive? In the first few minutes of  the documentary, Ben Nichols (lead singer/guitarist/writer) pretty much lays it on the line and drives it home saying "The guys in Lucero don't have nothin' else going on for them. The four of us, like, this is all we got basically. It almost makes you sad until you remember how damn talented they are and the fact that they are making their way through life, and makin' a living, pursuing that dream of playin' music. Ben sits holding an Icehouse beer in his beat up white t-shirt looking a bit worn down but adorable all the same. He holds the same qualities in an interview as he does onstage, appearing outspoken but incredibly shy at the same time. The boys all have a shot at describing their sound, but again, it is Ben that pegs the sound calling it "Driving in your car down the freeway type music, or staying up late waiting on somebody to call type music."
And that is exactly it! Their music so is incredibly movin' and rockin' yet is filled with undertones of sadness. This documentary is as raw as Lucero, no bells and whistles. You can picture a buddy with a pawn shop camera following the boys around shooting interviews and live performance footage in between swigs of whiskey and beer.
That is definitely the charm of this film, it's not glossed over, it's not shined up, it gives you the feeling you are actually sitting on the couch next to the Lucero boys with a frosty cold one in your hand. I could write about Bright Stars Lonesome Nights all night
long. But I would much rather you go rent this little gem, and if you don't have a Lucero recording in your collection, go get one now!!!

DIS NOTES:

News, news, news, lotsa news this week. Sadly, were here to report that one of our Kansas City rock-n-roll favs The Ramalamas have left the building. Some members leaving the band to mind other commitments, and others to give rebirth to Kansas Citys former sound force machine The Last of the V-8s. While well mourn the loss of The Ramalamas we send our best to the V-8s as they reconvene to rock the masses and release a CD this summer. We also hear that Mr. John Wesley Myers (Black Diamond Heavies) will make an appearance on said record and thats a very very good thing. Proof again that with the bad comes the good. In other news and to give you a heads up on next week, Sad Dog favorite Jon Dee Graham slated to play Daveys next weekend wont be able to make it. Im sure well be welcoming him back real soon but its still gonna be a great night as Scrappy Jud Newcomb (The Resentments, Ian McLagans Bump Band) will accompany The Gaslights on the bill. The Gaslights will head East the next day for a Northern States tour, and then across the pond to Holland and Belgium for the month of February. Timing will be everything next Friday night as The Brick also offers up a great line-up. The Throttlers are back and in the opening slot for Valient Thorr (Chapel Hill) and Whiskey Boots (Kansas Citys Amy Farrand, and Heather Lofflin Honeybaby). That night will be a true test of my ability to catch two great shows in one night.

Coming up quickly is the music gathering to the South known as SXSW. Sounds like Kansas City is going to make quite the Austin influx in March. In the coming weeks well let those of you making the trek to Austin know where you can catch our breathren if you need a Kansas City fix in the mix of it all. Note to bands: if you are playing a showcase, SXSW official or not, let us know so we can include you in our Notes.

One more thing..theres a band playing KC on a hefty bill March 12th at The Beaumont. Theyre called The Tossers and they are one of my all time favorite bands. If you dig traditional Irish music w/ punk rock ethos git yer ticket now! More to come on them at a later date.

Welcome New Sad Pups!

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

WELCOME NEW SAD PUPS!
Mr. Tim Finn, Pop Music Critic for the Kansas City Star, was kind enough to mention Sad Dog in his article about local music, which appeared in todays Preview Section. From that mention we attracted quite a few new music lovers requesting to be added to our E-Letter list. We appreciate your interest and thought we would share a bit about Sad Dog to bring you up to speed. Come April 2006, we will have put out Sad Dog every Thursday rain or shine for two years. You will not see every band playing in Kansas City listed on Sad Dog because we are very particular about our live music. We have no formula and no guidelines to what bands/artists fill the pages, they just have to inspire us. And of course, we promote the heck out of local bands/artists in hopes that you will hit the clubs and Support Your Local Live Music! But we dont stop at local musicwe also fill you in on touring artists coming through Kansas City as well. Most importantly, we do not consider ourselves music critics. We are lovers of live music here to tell our stories and hopefully inspire you to hit the clubs and SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC!
Welcome to the Sad Dog family!

Federation of Horsepower has been known to scare other bands out of the genre of full throttle rock in roll. Take to their My Space and have a listen for your self. www.myspace.com/federationofhorsepower. The Chicken Hawks hail from Sioux City, IA and are out in support of their 2nd record, Hard Hitting Songs for Hard Hit People. Theyve drawn comparisons to Gun Club, X, and The Cramps and that sounds just delicious. 3 Minute Hero didnt have to travel far to bring their power pop as the guy leading this trio is Mikes very own Mike Devine.

Its Over @ THE CUP AND SAUCER
Free and all ages. 10pm 12:30am
The boys will be unleashing 4 new songs!
If I had a record label these boys would be signed in a heartbeat. They make me jump around the room like a little kid with heir high-energy 60s and 70s influenced pop rock that cant help but lighten the heart and lift the spirit. Dont get me wrong, Its Over is fun, but they arent just some bubblegum pop group. These boys are solid and smart with intelligent lyrics and catchy tunes. So what if they travel with a huge fish reminiscent of Nemo, just succumb to that which is Its Over, throw your arms in the air and sing Hallelujah. And most importantly, get a good dose of them this weekend at The Cup. -jaq

Tony (Pendergast), John (The Bad Ideas) and Chad Rex (currently flying solo). These boys know how to hit home with their mix the country and the rock. Tony leans more towards the Americana rock sounds of greats Steve Earle and Neil Young, John feeds off of his Outlaw heroes and Chad tends to let what some like to call Alt-Country guide his musical style. JAQS NOTES:
So what is up with this VooDoo venue @ Harrahs Casino? I occasionally check out their full-page ad in the Pitch, for a giggle, as it seems that VooDoo is the place to go to see just about any tribute band around, from The Beatles to Pearl Jam. One thing is for sure; it VooDoo is the most genre-defying venue in the city. This week their ad promotes Air Supply, electro jam band Sound Tribe Sector Nine, The Bodeans, Better Than Ezra, and some of that pop country that will send me vehemently running away. Whoa! But it wasnt until I read that Lucinda Williams will be gracing the stage in a rare acoustic performance on March 3 that I decided to actually take the VooDoo seriously. As much as I hate to think of headin out to The Casino for a show, I cannot stay away from this one. I guess it will soon become that VooDoo that I do.
www.lucindawilliams.com / www.voodookc.com

DIS NOTES:
On my long list of favorite things to do reading sits right up there at the top and Im a sucker for a biography. Sometimes its the need to live vicariouslythe life unlived. Sometimes its a need to understand the complexity of heroes. And sometimes its simply a guilty pleasure. I picked up the book from the top of the Winter Reading Stack just a few days ago. Hardcore Troubadour: The Life & Near Death of Steve Earle (by Lauren St. John 2003). It begins in Nashville 1992 and Earle has sold a plane ticket for $100 which he then spends at a crack house. That plane ticket was to deliver him to his lawyer in New York who was awaiting his signature on a multi-million dollar record contract. The struggle to create his music in a fit of addiction, tumultuous relationships, wanderlust, brushes with the law, leads to his fall and his rise to eventually win a Grammy in 2005 (Best Contemporary Folk Album for The Revolution StartsNow. Steve Earle is not the great music icon, hes not the voice behind a generation, and hes certainly not a chart buster. But hes got a story. His story creates a captivating tug that makes it a hard one to put down. Im not half way through it and it may damn well be one of the finest music biographies Ive read. For you rock-n-rollers, it reads like a Please Kill Me for the country set.with significantly more substance. www.steveearle.com

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

FRIDAY, JANUARY 13
Robb Steele, Bacon Shoe and The Shithitters 10pm @ RECORD BAR
$7 / $5 if you wear a costume (any costume).
If you havent had a taste of this bacon cookin, Kenny Rogers hatin KC rap trio its about time for you to experience Lethal D, Toine and Mr. Ruggles in action. It seems Bacon Shoe has appealed to many more palates than the ones here at Sad Dog HQ as you can find them splashed all over the pages of this weeks Pitch Magazine and donning the cover of the Kansas City Star Preview. As live performances go it is difficult to beat out Bacon Shoe on raw entertainment and humor, especially if you like your live music with a side of bacon. Tonight they will be filming a DVD, so dont miss your chance to be in the movies.
At 6pm at the Record Bar, there will be a fundraiser for local filmmaker Gary Huggins, whose short feature First Date was selected for the Sundance Film Festival, the SXSW Film Festival and the Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival in France. $6 cover

The Bad Ideas and Chad Rex @ MIKES TAVERN
Oh yeah, what a great line-up for you Americana music lovers and fans of just flat out great songwriting. The Bad Ideas, lead by Mr. John Stubblefield, will be tearin it up playin that dirty honky-tonk that would make the Outlaws proud.
Chad has played, at various times throughout his musical career, in Armchair Martian, Drag the River, Go Kart and Chad Rex and the Victorstands. He has been working on a new record and has some new material to preview.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 14
American Catastrophe, Rex Hobart and the Sleeping People and A Burial At Sea @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
We love that dark and sexy sound of American Catastrophe here at Sad Dog HQ. And tonight, an old friend of Daveys is back with a new treat, Rex Hobart and the Sleeping People. The Sleeping People include Josh Mobley (electric piano), Paul Andrews (drums), Sam (theramin and congas), Tilden Snow (bass), Bobby DuSoul (trumpet) and Amy Nelson as Cantina Girl #1. Rex describes the sound of his new combo as Spaghetti Western-inspired instrumental pieces with an orchestra.

Roman Numerals, The Golden Falcons and The Rather Nots @ THE BRICK

Alacartoona, Grand Marquis and The Von Hodads @ RECORD BAR
Join Alacartoon early 8-10pm for a little cabaret and a bite to eat of the Record Bar's fun menu. Late night, Grand Marquis and The Von Hodads take over and what a fine combo that will be. Both bands can shake it up a bit. Whether keyed down or fully loaded the Grand Marquis can take their sound from jazz, to jump blues and swing or as seen recently at a Donkey Show can lean to a dixie persuasion. Whatever way they take it they are always a crowd pleaser recently validated as Pitch Reader Poll favorite - 2005 Jazz category. Another versatile band lies with The Von Hodads. Originally honed as a Western Surf Outfit they've spread their style out a bit to include a lounge flavor by adding some vocals. A great night to see the variety KC local music possesses.

OTHER NEWS:
Recycled Sounds Sale! Through January 14th.
20% off all purchases of $25 or more on all fully priced items. Sale does not include items on consignment.

JAQS NOTES:
My eyes have grown very tired at an unusually early hour and the brain is begging me to move onto a project that takes little concentration. So I leave you with little this eve so that I might make a visit to I-Tunes to purchase Iron and Wine Our Endless Numbered Days, The National The National, and Richard Buckner Devotion and Doubt. Then after thatand I know I sound like a broken recordI am finally going to watch that &*%$ Lucero: Bright Stars On Lonesome Nights Documentary that I have been telling you all I am going to watch for a month now! Be sure, next week I will, once and for all, deliver a full review.

DIS NOTES:
Ive been in Philadelphia for the past few days and the only live music experience of the trip was seeing the original Village People. Wanting to maintain our readership I thought better of writing about that experience here. Its a good story so just ask me if you would like to hear it. As I was writing on Sad Dog tonight Im happy to see theres some good choices out there. Through the holidays and other commitments there has certainly been a lack of time to get out and feed the soul. Whats on the menu? Well for breakfast Ill be having some Bacon Shoe. A few of us were sitting around last week talking about Bacon Shoe, not listening to them, talking about them. A fit of hysterical laughter ensued that will surely be repeated Friday night at Record Bar. Next on the menu Im gonna have to make a run between American Catastrophe at Daveys and the late night show at the Record Bar with Grand Marquis and The Von Hodads. Recent performances by both bands have proven its not always the same show with these bands. A chance to see em shake it up on a shared bill sounds quite appetizing. The Litigators on Sunday at P. Otts followed by a holiday on Monday certainly creates a healthy appetite. And Im going for two deserts this week with Pendergast on Tuesday and the mighty Mr. Jon Wesley Myers on Wednesday. Theres nothing Id like more than to wrap him up in a little doggy bag and send it to you over the interweb. Hes a music treat that you must catch while we have him in KC every Wednesday at Daveys through January.

JAQS NOTES:
It has been a bit of a chore talking myself out of the house lately. Maybe its the chill in the air, maybe its the calling of a post-holiday rest and maybe its the entire first season of Lost which has recently fell into my hands. However, Wed., Jan. 4th I headed out to Daveys Uptown to celebrate my friend and Sad Dog partner, Dianas, B-Day. It was an intimate setting, as only the front room of the bar was open and the lights were low. A festive odor still lingered in the air as a wreath decorated with holly and Old Style beer cans still hung over the stage. Everyones spirits were high and smiles seemed to be plastered on all the faces in the room. Then Mr. John Wesley Myers of the Black Diamond Heavies, only in KC for a short month, sat down and hit a few notes on the organ. Joining John Wesley on stage and bangin the skins was a Sad Dog friend, Mr. Glenn Hockemeier, of local Americana Rock band The Gaslights. Those first notes started the night of raunchy southern blues and sexy ballads. Sidenote, John Wesley Meyers has one dirty, gritty and super saucy sound. They played some Black Diamond Heavies tunes and some covers which were chosen wiselywell, play me some Stones and make it Sway and you have me hooked. The boys tore it up, had us dancin our fannies off and singin out loud. Oh, and they had only practiced a couple of times leading up to the show. I urge you and encourage you to run down to our favorite little bar on Main Street, Daveys Uptown, and get a big ol dose of John and Glen before John Wesley has to pack up his chops and keys and take em on home. Where you might think being out late on a school night will set you back, it will actually rev you up and jet you right on past hump day!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MS. DIANA AND THANK YOU FOR GETTING MY FANNY OUT FOR SOME ATTITUDE ALTERING LIVE MUSIC.

DIS NOTES:
Well yesterday was my birthday. The tequila headache of the Ponaks variety still somewhat lingers and I seemed to have injured my shoulder whilst busting a move to the dirty blues sound of Mr. John Wesley Myers (of Black Diamond Heavies) making it a bit difficult to type. Id like to thank my friends, some Sad Dog readers and one rockin bartender Mr. Chris Meck for helping me mark the passing of another year. There is only one thing you need to know from me this week. John Wesley Myers will be playing the small stage at Daveys every Wednesday for the rest of the month - a guaranteed weekly cure for your winter blahs.
