Sad Dog Show Correction!!!!

Hello Pups!

It seems our eyes have been dog-tired here at Sad Dog HQ as we made a mistake in this Thursday's email.
We have the following show listed as Friday, February 24 but it is actually...
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 25
Seaside Riot, Action Figure (CD Release), and Emma Feel @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
www.seasideriot.com / www.actionfigurerocks.com / www.myspace.com/actionfigure / www.emmafeelmusic.com / www.myspace.com/emmafeel
It's another hot show and we don't want you showing up on the wrong night! We apologize to the bands, Davey's Uptown and all you fine friends and music lovers!

Since we have your attention, we just received the following information regarding the Shay Estes and Mark Lowry Dinner Show (7pm early show) @ RECORD BAR, Saturday, February 25.
There was a scheduling conflict which could not be resolved, and Mr. Lowrey and Shay were forced to cancel their engagement. They apologize to anyone who was planning to attend and will be rescheduling to play there as soon as possible.

Have a fun and safe weekend and SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC!

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24

Goodnight Daylight, The Virginia Sisters, and Modern Primitives @ MIKES TAVERN

Since the moment I saw Goodnight Daylight I was hooked by their southern and indie infused rock. The now sold out self-titled EP can still be heard blasting from my car stereo and I can still be caught singing the words full out bringing laughter to whomever pulls up beside me. Lead singer Jason Magierowskis soulful southern sound is nothing short of brilliant mixing the stellar musicianship of Peter Cook and Chris Sharp making Goodnight Daylight a band to make KC proud. -jaq

The Architects CD Release Party w/ Vena Amori and Super Black Market @ RECORD BAR $10 cover and includes The Architects new release Revenge

For those of you who have seen The Architects live you have a pretty good idea of why the faces of this KC band can be found splattered all over the covers of the Pitch and the Kansas City Star Preview this week of February. For those of you who havent had a head on collision with the hellfire rock of The Architects, I highly suggest you make plans to be at the Record Bar tonight and get your seat early as this show will have a line out the door. By the way, I had to adopt the term hellfire rock from Tim Finn, music critic at the Kansas City Star, because that is a sound that drives right to the core of my soul. Their live show is super high energy and if they were on a Reeces Peanut Butter Cup commercial they would be bantering over who got whose punk in whose rock and roll. So if you are serious about getting your rock on this is the show to take you there.

Jesus Christ Superstar in Concert @ THE BOTTLENECK (Lawrence)

Theres just never a lack of ingenuity in these parts. Seems some local musicians from bands Drakkar Sauna, Split Lip Rayfield, Parlay/Tenderloin, The Shebangs, and more were moved to bring this rock opera to stage. This is not a theatrical performance.well at least not in the stage musical or play sense. This week they make their debut performance at The Bottleneck, next week The Record Bar. These good hearted folks that are kind enough to bring this masterpiece back to us are also donating all proceeds to the Humane Society, the Kirk Rundstrom Cancer Fund, and Harvesters.

Shows at 6pm and 10pm at The Bottleneck $5 donation

Band Scramble III @ THE BRICK

The brain child of local musician John Ferguson, Band Scramble is back for its third incarnation with the support of The Brick.

What is it this thing called Band Scramble? Local ambitious musicians throwing caution to the wind and tossing their name and paired instrument into the hat. The drawing from said hat constructs the making of new bands. It was a former Band Scramble that gave birth to The Anvil Chorus and Silver Shore.

Musicians: its a $5 entry fee and the drawing takes place 8pm sharp

Afficionados: Stay tuned.

Mardi Gras Parade @ CROSSROADS @ 18TH St.

Festivities start at 6pm in front of YJs at 128 W. 18th St.

A couple years ago it was this event that gave The Flaming Lips The Key to Kansas City. And why not really, especially when Mayor Kay Barnes does the actual live bestowing. It was a moment only shadowed by a float on top of which its perilous riders cooked bacon and then tossed the meaty strips to the revilers below. Words, nor photos, can give this debauchery due justice. Weather takes no prisoners at this event and if you arent costumed youll wish you woulda been.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 1

Matisyahu @ THE BEAUMONT CLUB

This Hasidic Reggae artist mixes hip-hop, beatbox and reggae appealing to mass audiences and making a convert of everyone who experiences his live show. I was first introduced to Matisyahu working for the 2005 Wakarusa Festival. Prior to last year I had not heard word one of this artist but since his three performances that festival weekend his name seems to pop up in all circles. His release Matisyahu: Live at Stubbs, Austin, TX has been receiving rave reviews and he is due to release his first studio recording Youth March 7, 2006. Visit his website to pre-order this release and receive a Youth Dual Disc with double side CD/DVD. Also on his site you can check out the new Youth video. Its worth a visit. -jaq

The Official Rock and Roll Radio Show, 2-3pm

JAQS NOTES:

Last Sunday night I made a brilliant decision to go out on a school night. The draw was The Capes, Its Over and Emma Feel at the Record Bar. Unfortunately, due to prior plans, I got to the show a little late and was repeatedly scolded for missing the garage funk stylings of Emma Feel who apparently tore it up. I did roll in just in time to catch Its Over put on what proved to be another stellar performance. These boys get better with every show and it seems I am constantly craving another dose of their brand of 50s and 60s influenced rock. It was, however, the buzz of the British boys The Capes that solidified my decision to get out and get my rock on. I had popped by Streetside Records on Saturday for their in-store and picked up a copy of their debut release Hello. Their catchy pop electro infused sound ringing from the disc commanded me to see them live. I must say is proved to be a wise decision. For a girl who is inclined to lean towards the Americana sound and has made a point of not groovin on the pop, I am hooked. Hello is an album filled with radio hits, which usually sends me running to the hills. In this case, however, it just has me playing those songs over and over again. After seeing The Capes live I still stick to what I said last week in that they leave you feeling a bit like youve been riding a high-speed carnival carousel. I found myself bowing out of conversations to run up front and dance to my favorite songs. Yes, after one day spent with Hello I already had favorite songs such as Supergirls and Shinjuku Hi 5. This new found attraction to pop leaves me wondering if in my older age my tastes are changing, or if The Capes are an exception to the rule because they are just that good. In any case, I am thoroughly enjoying Hello and encourage you head out to Streetside Records and pick up a copy to love and treasure and perhaps make you re-evaluate your entire taste in music. I always did have a thing for Brits.

DIS NOTES:

Oh readers of excellent and discerning tastes. What makes the tide turn in a rough day for you? Today I arrived home to a nice little package in my mail. Billy Braggs Mermaid Avenue Vol. II, a gem of record. Partnering with Wilco, and with the blessing of Guthries daughter Nora, Bragg reinvents just a few (the total said to be numbered near 2,500) previously unrecorded Woody Guthrie lyrics to new music. Both Mermaid Avenue I & II were Grammy Award nominees. Bragg, English troubadour by way of punk rock roots introduced a marker in his career this week with the release of Billy Bragg: Vol. 1 on Yep Roc records. Its a mighty one with 7 CDs and 2 DVD including 3 disks of rarities. A purchase this girl will make down the road when wealth recognizes my worthiness. In the meantime, and back to that lovely postal service deposit on my doorstep...Last October a friend told me about a new online purchasing avenue. Ive always favored the trip to the local music store myself where my wanderlust going from bin to bin can equal hours. However, with the recent closing of one and soon to come second homegrown music stores Ive welcomed this new approach to music purchases. The website is www.yourmusic.com. While it wont allow you to purchase the latest and newest its an excellent way to rebuild your music catalog replacing all those CDs that have gone their own way due to carelessness, sticky fingers, or to purchase those old gems youve never gotten around to picking up. For a mere $5.99/month one CD from your queue is sent to you with no added shipping charges. Just make sure your queue is loaded for that $5.99 will come out of your account regardless. Recent purchases: Cheap Trick, The Cars, The Pretenders and now Mr. Bragg. Now, back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Politics of Dancing

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17
Large, The Broken Onlys and The Bad Ideas @ MIKES TAVERN
Jon Stubblefields The Bad Ideas are a fairly new Sad Dog favorite. Stubblefield is known for his savvy songwriting skills and now he rocks it up a bit with The Bad Ideas while still holding on to that familiar twang. The Broken Onlys feature former members of Secular Theme, Boot Hill and The Dead Enders. Weve yet to catch them but understand they too mix up their own batch of rock-country elixir. Large, also local to KC, plays progressive/alt rock.

Besides the totally tubular live music there will be civil rights themed skits and DJs Just & Automatic Westy spinning for your dancing pleasure. Proceeds from the event will support aclu2 efforts to educate and inspire a new generation of ACLU members in Kansas City. And dont we need that now.

Be/Non, The Lucky Graves and Its Over @ MIKES TAVERN
Be/Non is fronted by Brody Rush aka Blo-Chi the mastermind behind Brodioke (Monday nights at The Brick). They are one of the bands on the Anodyne Records Showcase at SXSW this year. The Lucky Graves features Adam Stotts and Ben Ruth (both of Overstep and The Golden Hearted Whores). Be sure to check out Sugar and Salt on their Myspace page, its a beaut. Filling out this great line-up are Its Over, a raucous good time and a band that always has the crowd on their feet.

Honeywagen, and The Lust-R-Tones @ FRED P. OTTS
While it has only been 3 months since Honeywagen has played Kansas City, it seems much longer and were happy to see they are back to the P. Otts stage. Theyre bringing a new bass player in to the mix, Eric Cornwell (formerly of Jade Raven and The Blank Stares). Its another national holiday-eve at P. Otts which are the best kind. If you dont catch Honeywagen tonight find your way to Boozeday Tuesdays @ Mikes Tavern on Tuesdayor better yet, make both shows. One of the best pop rock outfits in these parts.

The Afterparty and Cat Scientist @ THE BRICK

The Capes, Its Over and Emma Feel, 8pm @ RECORD BAR
This is one fun line-up as this band of Brits, who call themselves The Capes, hit the Record Bar and join two of Kansas Citys most energetic ensembles for a night of rock that will definitely put some pep in your step and keep ya movin through the week. The Capes are touring on their debut full-length album Hello and their pop rock electro sound will leave you feeling a bit like youve been riding a high-speed carnival carousel. Catch them now because these boys are winding their way through the states on their Spring tour that will land them at SXSW in Austin, TX where they are sure to catch the South-By buzz and critics praises. The show starts at 8pm, and although we dont know exactly in what order the bands will go on this eve, you wont want to miss Its Over and their eclectic take on 50s and 60s rock or Emma Feel and their garage funk and soul.

JAQS NOTES:
Ladies Behind The Outlaws
The Outlaws in this case are Mr. Johnny Cash and Mr. Waylon Jennings and the ladies left behind are Johnnys daughter Rosanne and the love of Waylons life Jessi Coulter. These ladies of country music have put out two incredibly heartfelt albums stemming from the loss of the great men of their lives.
Jessi Colter, The First Lady of Outlaw Music, best known for her collaboration on the album Wanted! The Outlaws with Waylon, Willie Nelson and Tompall Glaser, has released her first serious solo album in 20 years Out of the Ashes. This powerful album is a window into a grief-laden heart as the words and music came from the loss of her soul mate and best friend Waylon in 2002. Where the sound is true to her country roots, Jessi throws in the blues where it is needed and winds up with a gospel quality that will have you floating with her words. Beware, Ashes will definitely pull at your heartstrings, and in particular the song Please Carry Me Home with Waylons son Shooter, threatens to bring a tear to your eye.
Where Jessis album is a true telling of heartbreak, Rosanne records her grief in a much different manner on her new release Black Cadillac. She definitely pulls from her spiritual nature and even lends a gospel quality to her new album, but she comes across with much more grit and maybe even a bit of anger. Rosannes loss has mounted high over the past few years with the passing of her father Johnny Cash and stepmother June Carter in 2003 and her mother Vivian Liberto last May. Somehow she takes all that pain and funnels into an album that is somehow intense and uplifting at the same time. She hints at various genres throughout the album but always maintains a pure quality and sound. This is definitely the album of a woman who said enough of the BS, this is how I feel and I am ready to tell you about it. Where I can thoroughly appreciate Jessis Out of the Ashes it doesnt take hold of me like Rosannes Black Cadillac. From the first listen the album found a place in the CD rotation and in singing the songs it gave me an outlet for my own latent sadness. I guess I just need a little grit in my grief.

DIS NOTES:
A new CD was handed my way this week that Ive barely taken it out of the changer and Im happy to have four uninterrupted hours as I hit the road North this weekend. I reckon by the time I return Ill include it in that loyal road trip repertoire of CDs you dont leave the house without. The newest addition to the Bloodshot Records family is Deadstring Brothers and the CD in mention is Starving Winter Report. In classic album fashion you wont be able to pick your favorite song but rather youll find yourself giving it a full listen each time and it is oh-so-nice to find that again. With meant-to-be-so vocal harmonies, horns, keys and pedal steel, at first listen there is an undeniable recognition of Stones era Exile on Main Street, and equally rooted in blues and classic country storytelling. They call Detroit home but I doubt that will ever be a descriptor for this band. Theres nothing Detroit about em.
Bloodshot Records proving once again that it rarely does wrong. The CD releases next Tuesday, 2/21/06. Lucky for us theyll be making their way to KC en route to SXSW. Catch em at Daveys Uptown Saturday, March 11th.

Sad Dog Show Correction!!!!

Sorry for the confusion pups, but please take note of the following show correction!

The Dark Circles, Anvil Chorus, American Catastrophe show is @ MIKE'S TAVERN - NOT THE BRICK!
This will be a hot show and we don't want you heading out to the wrong venue.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 10
The Dark Circles, Anvil Chorus and American Catastrophe @ MIKE'S TAVERN
This week certainly isnt hurting for some great line-ups from Kansas City bands. Tonight at The Brick, while diverse from each other, they are wisely paired up on this stage. The Dark Circles give a nod to the 80s with their darkly-rich new wave sound, Anvil Chorus who is unmatched in their foreboding-ethereal take and American Catastrophe who mix the best of darkness and foreboding rendering an edgy feeling of Old West storytelling.

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

CALL TO ACTION:
Last week we received the news that our friend Kirk Rundstrom (Split Lip Rayfield, Kirk Rundstrom Band, Grain and Demise) has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. He is in good spirits, is keeping a positive attitude and is seeking immediate and aggressive treatment. Kirk is strong and willful and with the help of his family, friends and fans he will beat this illness and be gracing our stages soon. The treatment, however, will be very expensive, and as quality insurance for musicians is hard to come by, he can use some support. We dont have solid details but we did get word that two benefit shows are in the works, one at The Uptown in Kansas City and one at the Bottleneck in Lawrence. You will know details as we know them. You can also visit the Split Lip Rayfield website, www.splitliprayfield.com to make and immediate donation.

Blackout Gorgeous, Aubrey, The Monitor and Lovers in Transit
What a great idea, NEW BAND ALERT! In one night you can check out four bands making their entrance into the KC music scene. We have already had the chance to get a glimpse of one of these bands - The Monitor. Their sound has been described as dark 80s dance pop drawing comparisons to Bauhaus and Depeche Mode. Tonight is The Monitors CD RELEASE PARTY and you can be sure they will have some copies of that new release Surveillance as well some t-shirts to boot. These guys arent messin around! BR549 w/ The Avett Brothers @ THE BOTTLENECK
Its hard to believe BR549 has been doing their Country thing for more than a decade now. Two of the fellows in this band used to call Lawrence home and we shared the same stopping grounds back in the day. But folks, this hard working country outfit, who now call Nashville home, are well worth the trip. Country is the word I choose to encompass all the sonic tricks these boys pull outfrom honky-tonk, to raise the roof gospel and at times even a bit rockin, its always a great show. We especially dig the title of their new record Dog Days.

Love on the Rocks 10pm Featuring DJ Neil Diamond, aka Robert Moore of Sonic Spectrum @ RECORD BAR
I finally made it to the Record Bar to check out Rexs Honky Tonk Tuesday night this week and had a blast. Rex and the Misery Boys were onstage giving me that sweet sound of honky-tonk and it seemed that friends just kept pouring out of the woodwork. I would say it was the place to be seen if it werent for the fact that the friends I bumped into arent really place to be seen type folks. The night was laid back but lively, urging a cowboy or cowgirl to belly up, grab a cold one, and ease on into the week. If youre in the mood to relax with good friends and good tunes you cant beat Tuesday night at Record Bar. Best thing, the show starts early so you can get in your fun and still get home in time to catch some shuteye. But for those of you wanting to get to bed early, beware, because after Rex is done playing a DJ du jour hits the stage. This week it was Brandon Phillips of the Architects spinnin old soul. I had an amazingly difficult time getting out the door. It seemed every time I handed out goodbye hugs another I love this song and cant leave now moment occurred and I stayed a bit longer. -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
This week has been an absolute dream week for a live music lover like me.
Outside of a minor cold bug that sent me to bed at 9:30pm last night making me miss Richard Buckner, a singer/songwriter I have been waiting weeks to see, (Urgh!!!), I have been in live music heaven from honky tonk with Rex Hobart to a KC musician all star jam led by Pendergast at Daveys that got me a bit choked up with pride.
It was all kicked off last Friday night at the Brick with a line up that kept an ol sleepy head like me out till the bar closed. The night started off with Whiskey Boots, a powerful duo comprised of Heather Loflin (Honeybaby) on guitar and Amy Farrand (Shotgun Idols, American Catastrophe) on drums. Now these ladies know how to rock! It is amazing how much sound they shell out from just three instruments, one being Heathers full tilt rock vocals. But dont be mislead, she isnt hiding a mediocre voice with rock lungs, this ladys voice is downright beautiful and unique enough to call her own. There is a vibrato in her sound that yells passion and pain, and, well, lets you know she doesnt take any shit. Of course Amy is one of those people you love to hate for being able to pick up any instrument she puts in her hands and coming off like a master of her craft.
The Throttlers took the stage next and delivered what is always a performance not to be missed, shovin that high-octane rock right in your face. I have been a Throttlers fan for years and they continue to feed my craving for rock and roll.
What came next was an event that I had not expected in a million years. Yes, it was an event, a revival of sorts, a revival led by the band Valient Thor The Legendary Venusion RocknRollers. The band came out looking like they had been time warped directly from the late 70s donning long hair, afros, cut off jean jackets with their logo splattered across the back and kickin out the metal much in the vein of Judas Priest or The MC5. They are over the top, theatrical and insanely humorous without ever coming across like a fake. These guys are the real thing. In trying to describe the lead singer I have come up with the following, Furry Heavy Metal Inspirational Speaking Gnome on Speed. Oh Yeah!!! They certainly brought on the metal but took ample time for the furry gnome to raise the roof in inspirational ranting. The show brought out all the rockers in the city and, at one point, had us all down on the floor in a circular pow wow. It is certainly a show not to be missed next time around! For now, check out their release Total Universe Man for a little taste of the madness that is Valient Thor.
http://www.aversion.com/bands/valientthorr/

DIS NOTES:
I shared most of that experience with Jaq last Friday but headed out a bit early in the evening and caught The Architects in a little space next to Mercy Seat. Turns out they did bring some of that new record to life and was I ever happy my timing was on. It was a brief rendezvous but it seems thats all it took to make me a fan. Heres one of those bands that I honestly did not appreciate the first couple go rounds. It was a bit to indie for my taste but theyve infused some soul and rock-n-roll swagger into a bigger sound. Thats more like it. Ive been listening online and will surely add their CD to my collection. (New CD Revenge in stores 2/21/06)
Sadly, I didnt bear witness to the power that is Valient Thor. I did catch a listen on Sunday afternoons Official Rock-n-Roll Radio Show on KKFI which solidified their spot on my must see next time list. Instead I made my way to Daveys for The Gaslights send off and so rightly ended the night in front of the rock-n-roll pulpit of one Reverend Tony Ladesich and crew that make up Pendergast. The rock-n-roll spectacle that ended the night is one of the history books. Theres simply nothing better than guest appearances by former band members and a bevy of musicians climbing on stage for an all-star ROCK-N-ROLL jam.the only kind of jam.

LATE NIGHT ROCKIN:
The Gaslights and Pendergast @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
One of Sad Dogs favorite line-ups hits Daveys tonight in a full-on whiskey fueled, country, roots, Americana good time. Its a special night for The Gaslights tonight, they hit the road the following day to traipse their sound across the northern states and abroad. Jon Dee Graham was supposed to be a part of this line-up but illness has him laid out for a bit and his touring cohort Scrappy Judd Newcomb wont be making it either. Theyll be back and youll hear about it here. In the meantime, the night is left in the ever capable hands of two of Kansas Citys best. The Gaslights open the bottle and Pendergast sucks out the last drop.

Valient Thor, Throttlers and Whiskey Boots @ THE BRICK
I have never seen Valient Thor, but Sherri Parr at The Brick puts their live show on her Top 5 List of 2005. The Throttlers always please with their high-octane rock. Whiskey Boots is the dynamic duo of Amy Farrand and Heather Loflin, formerly of Honeybaby. I saw their first show as a duo last year and it blew me away. They had only practiced three times before that show and I cant wait to see what a little seasoning has added to the flavor. -jaq

ILYA, Anvil Chorus, Goodbye Blue Monday and Andru Bemis @ THE BRICK
Anvil Chorus has always intrigued me in a couple ways. They are one, and possibly the only, remaining band from Kansas Citys first ever Band Scramble (the event that matched-up musicians and vocalists from the drawing of a hat to create new bands). Secondly, they evoke the memory of one of my all time favorite bands My Bloody Valentine. Magically paired on this bill with ILYA who also draws on that beautiful, ethereal, sometimes foreboding, art-rock noise sound. In drastic contrast, Andru Bemis sits on this bill. In 2004 this fellow departed for a four month 30,000+ mile trek on Amtrak, going town to town with his guitar and banjo. Andru is in the midst of one such tour with a stop in KC. A modern-folk artist, that draws on days gone by when foot stompin, porch sittin, and strummin to entertain the neighbors or the lucky passerby was the pinnacle of the day.he can also shake the walls with his solo-impassioned attack. -di

First, I am still reeling from a great Friday night of rock as our Chi-town friends The Safes made their way back to KC. The crowd was small, but for those of us lucky to find ourselves at Mikes Tavern for The Safes show, WE WERE ROCKED!!! You must visit www.thesafes.com and purchase one of their two releases, Family Jewels (full-length) or Boogie Woogie Rumble (EP). Now either choice will make you very happy, but my favorite of the two is Boogie, as it is a little harder, a little tougher with a heavier garage rock sound. I like it like that! And keep your eyes peeled as they have a new release in the works.

Second, and on a completely different musical note, I have been listening to what I have found to be some really sexy music lately. So I offer up the following Sexy Sounds Trilogy.
It begins with the music of songwriter Samuel Beam, who goes by the stage name Iron and Wine. The album is The Creek Drank the Cradle and offers some soft, soothing, relaxing songs to bathe by. Another great buy is his album collaboration with Calexico called In the Reins.

Next in the sexy sounds trilogy is the music of singer/songwriter Richard Buckner, and in particular his album Devotion + Doubt. Richard has one of those voices that can melt butter. His voice is steady with a hint of gravel and is accompanied by the lovely sounds of the acoustic and slide guitars. His song Lil Wallet Picture has me adding another addiction to my loving list of addictions. And, lucky you, Richard Buckner will grace the stage at Daveys Uptown Wednesday eve.

The third in the sexy sounds trilogy is the music of The National, and the album currently in rotation is the self-titled The National. They have a pop, rootsy, electro sound all wrapped up in lead singer Matt Berningers voice, which reminds me a bit of Bowie without any sign of intentional imitation. The music sometimes has me drawing comparisons to Lou Reed, well, Lou if Lou grew up on an Ohio farm. Once you hear them you might find yourself wondering how I managed to draw these comparisons as I sometimes pull the oddest comparisons out of the hat. I just suggest you make the purchase and decide for yourselves.

Anyway, if you are feelin sexy, or maybe want to feel sexy, I highly suggest you purchase all three of the aforementioned albums and live with them awhile. Purrrrrrrr!!!!

DIS NOTES:
My sweet soul sister Jaq hit the proverbial head of the nail this week by mentioning The Safes show. Ditto that. Love that band. Sometimes there is just nothing better in your week than a damn fine rock show. It doesnt suck to be me this week. However, I prefer their first release Family Jewels..theres something about that sound. It inspires my groove not unlike Social Distortion or the Beach Boys. Not that they sound like either, just that same certain thang that gets my tail awaggin.
Inspiration, thats whats it all about really, isnt it? Its gotta move you. A couple weeks back I wrote a bit on the book about Steve Earle, Hardcore Troubadour: The Life and Near Death of Steve Earle. Well I finished it last week and its been one of those stories that just sticks with me and enters my thoughts in the middle of a meeting, on the walk to work, and in the midst of telephone conversation with my mom. A couple of his CDs have been on regular rotation this week. Firstly, to further investigate how anyone can live through that and still write. Secondly, to soak up more on what drives any person to do what they do? Up-bringing, narcotics, subtle daily images, balls, therapy, freedom to do so, lack of boundaries, decisive choice? Or maybe they are simply naturally one step ahead of the game. Or maybe its just what goes in is forced out through some succinct or revolutionary avenue completely unaware to the affected. Be it music, visual arts, activism, taking care of tossed aside animals, politics, sex, literary projection, the way one works their groove thing, conversation...
The Conundrum that is the inspiration of the affected. Im certainly not going to figure it out, but Im oh so lucky to sit in the middle of the question.
