If you love bluegrass and you love rock-n-roll theres no reason not to catch this show. The entirety of their first record was AC/DC covers, the second was a compilation of r-n-roll classics including Feel Like Making Love, and Fat Bottom Girls, the third album brought us to the doorstep of KISS and the recent January 06 release mixes some originals with even more rock classics. They are a crowd favorite where ever they land.

It's Over (Rock & Roll) Special Acoustic Set - These boys throw a fantastic live show. Tonight their stripped down for something new. www.itsover.cc / www.myspace.com/itsoverkansascity
The Last Call Girls (Rockin' Country) www.thelastcallgirlsrock.com
Sugar Puppy and Her Lovely Dumplings - (Gnarla Natayet The World most Disgusting Superhero) Sugar puppy is a Donkey Show regular and most often the hit of the night. Her unique combination of comedy, dance, and performance art can only be fully grasped in her full one woman show. But lucky for us we get a little teaser on the 1st. And sometimes the tease is the best part. www.sugarpuppy.net
Rocky Flamingo (Vaudeville Band) - Rocky has not been seen since the Donkey Show at the Fahrenheit Ballroom. He is back with a vengeance showing off his prowess on Banjo-Uke and backed up by members of the Grand Marquis he can't go wrong.
Mark Smeltzer (Rural Grit Stomp) - Mark is a fixture in KC's Folk & Bluegrass scene. He is widely revered for building his own instruments such as, a mandolin made of frying pans, banjo string, and a tuning peg. A cello made of a snow shovel etc... He can be seen almost every Monday night at Rural Grit Happy hour at The Brick.
Stuck in a Straitjacket (Sketch Comedy Film) - This is a troop of KC residents that decided Kentucky Fried Movie was not funny enough and made their own. The movie, Stuck in a Straitjacket, is genuinely funny. Unfortunately, they can only show a few skits from the show, but it's more than enough to keep you laughing. stuckinastaightjacket@gmail.com
Mike Medeiros (Comedian) - 10 minutes of stand-up, and the possibility of audience participation ala Who's Line Is It Anyway.
Crazy Talk, Corkscrew Boar, and Slimm Spins @ MIKES TAVERN
I missed Crazy Talks last show at Daveys by minutes. I was scrambling to get there but it didnt happen. See, just prior to that show I paid a visit to their Myspace home and dug what I heard. Memories of my youth came rushing back when I heard that sound. No they arent that old it simply reminded me of cornfield keggers in Iowa.sound blaring from the car stereo, flirting with cute boys and a curfew at midnight I knew I was gonna miss. They would have been so excellent in that setting.I know that does nothing for you, the reader, unless you traipsed through that cornfield with me. Theyre rock-n-roll without caution, and no doubt a few reckless anthems in em. -di

Forrest Whitlow and The Pickles, The Tuna Helpers and Art & Fashion with Kris Devlin @ THE BRICK
Dont miss local rock and roll, singer/songwriter Forrest Whitlows new project with a bit of a country swagger featuring John Bersuch (Bacon Shoe, Minds Under Cover) on drums, Jeff Harshbarger (Tango Lorca, Malachy Papers) on bass, and DJ Clem (Wylde Chipmunk and the Cuddly-Poos) on guitar (when available). The night kicks off with the fashions of Kris Devlin and then The Tuna Helpers hit the stage. This all female trio from Austin is made up of Adrienne Sneed, (singer/guitarist), her sister Bethany on keyboards and her ex-girlfriend, Khattie Quinones on drums. Apparently this lethal mix of hormones adds to their punk, goth and pop stew always making for a live show filled with surprises, antics and an ensuing argument or two.

Destroyer and White Whale @ RECORD BAR
What started as a home-recording experiment in the mid-nineties by Vancouvers Dan Bejar, he has just released his seventh full-length Destroyer album, Destroyers Rubies, and with just a brief listen he has me curious. Not having enough time with Bejars music to write about it my own words I took the following from his Merge Records bio describing him as having a Dylanesque flare for biting and sardonic wit and (his) nods to the glam and bombastic folk approaches of early T-Rex and Bowie. I think this is a telling description as listening to Destroyer drums up images of New York City, the Velvet Underground and the Andy Warhol Factory where Bejars music would have found a fitting home. But then again, thats just one girls quick glimpse. Aside from Destroyer, Bejar has also contributed a few songs and vocals to Canadian band The New Pornographers. At the very least we know he has great taste. -jaq

RECENT RELEASES:
Hank III Straight to Hell Released February 28th, 2006 (Uncensored Version Bruc Records)
He may sound like his granddaddy but the one rounding out the Williams triptych waves a different flag. If you like pop Nashville country this is not a record for you. But keep reading and do something good for yourself. Okay the licks are country but the lyrics will surely have him banned from Wal-Mart and I like it like that. CD #1 in this double CD release has, just this week, raised him to the top of my list of reasons to love country music. When the CD is not playing Im singing along to the songs playing in my head. Fans of the documentary Dancing Outlaw will dig Track #5, a tribute to D. Ray White and his most famous son, Jesco, (or is that Elvis? Jessie? or the devil in himself?). I knew that family in Boone County, WV would one day make their way to a lyric. CD #2 is 42 minutes of experimentation, let it roll, theres some treats in there but if its not CD #1, its surely this second CD that gave the CD its name - Straight to Hellits unexplainable.
Pick it up and youll hear why this man should become an icon of his genre. Its been a long time since Ive given a record 5 stars but this one is well on its way. -di

JAQS NOTES:
Future of Music Coalition
I recently had the opportunity to hear a musician panel titled "Ten Things You Can Do to Change the World". The panelists included Steve Earle, Damian Kulash (OK Go), Hank Shocklee (President Shocklee Entertainment), Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie) and Jenny Toomey (Executive Director, Future of Music Coalition) as moderator. The focus of the panel was on musician activists and how to balance acclaim and the public soapbox. So here is where one might expect me to go through the "list of ten", however I digress. Maybe on another day and another discussion we will venture into the full list, but for now, I am going to just hit on number "10". Number "10" is "Get Health Insurance". It seems so simple, number "10", "Get Health Insurance". But it really isn't that easy for a musician/artist to get quality health insurance and still afford to eat. As I have learned from personal experience, if you are not employed by a company offering a group plan, you spend a lot of money for very li
ttle in the world of the individual health insurance coverage. And it can be overwhelming and frustrating trying to find an insurance plan that fits your needs and your budget. So near the end of my hour listening to the panel, Toomey took the lead to discuss number "10" and provide information on the Future of Music Coalition, in particular, HINT (Health Insurance Navigation Tool). I urge every musician/artist to visit www.futureofmusic.org, click on the HINT link, and spend a little time on the resources page. HINT offers a Health Insurance Overview of seven ways a musician/artist can obtain health insurance; a free telephone advice service where you can talk with an "actual person" who will discuss your personal situation and your options; an online service to schedule an appointment; a glossary of terms to help understand the insurance jargon; and numerous resources to help you find a plan that fits you and your family. This email might even seem a bit overwhelming, but I can
assure you the Future of Music Coalition website is highly user friendly and easy to navigate. You, as musicians and artists, are extremely important to our culture and community as a whole. I, for one, would not make it through the day without my tunes du jour guiding me down the road. So please, think of yourselves and your health first and take a visit to Future of Music Coalition. www.futureofmusic.org
DIS NOTES:
Kansas City Music.its been awhile since we raved and its long over due. Yes, the fact that this email goes out each week is a tribute to the excellent music brewing in these parts but sometimes you need to have a bit of a love fest. So sit down as I pull out my pulpit. I have something to tell you. I dont know if other towns have it as good as we do, but on any given night lately you can go out and see some damn fine music. Some bands strong and solid, some that play now and then and others just breaking the sceneand ya just hope that its not a passing fancy and youll get to see them again. First, The Golden Hearted Whores. Last Friday night their drummer couldnt make it, so two others, Scottie Fletcher (ex-Dragqueen guitarist) and Jason Meier (Honeywagen who traveled in from Lawrence) both beat it down to Daveys to fill in as Deputy Whores with less than an hours notice. And they rocked it. With few cues from the regular Whores it made for an exciting show and, anyway,
those songs could probably play themselvesthey are that good. Next night, different bar. The Brick showcased seasoned musicians in new formation in the Broken Onlys. Another fine songwriting machine. They had the full bar up on their feet and likely left us all waiting for the next show. There are some songs for the ladies and thats a wise thing for any band to include in their line-up. Pendergast closed the night and proved once again why this is one of my all-time favorite bands. There are a few bands out there that do something so well and so soulfully, leaving it hard to believe they ever put down their instruments - its what they should be doing all the time. Finally, my show goin weekend ended on Monday at the Grand Emporium. Its a tough place to play. Lots of tile and it just doesnt sound good but The Gaslights showed why it rarely matters where a band plays if they have something to back it. With harsh stage lights, bright enough to film a talk show, they took the
stage like troopers with what appeared to be elevated confidence from their recent time on the road and abroad. They outshined the venue. It topped off a weekend of great live KC music, the kind that makes you want to hit another bar and do it all over again. Get out and gettchr self some.
