KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

FRIDAY, MARCH 31
Hayseed Dixie @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
If you love bluegrass and you love rock-n-roll theres no reason not to catch this show. The entirety of their first record was AC/DC covers, the second was a compilation of r-n-roll classics including Feel Like Making Love, and Fat Bottom Girls, the third album brought us to the doorstep of KISS and the recent January 06 release mixes some originals with even more rock classics. They are a crowd favorite where ever they land.

It's Over (Rock & Roll) Special Acoustic Set - These boys throw a fantastic live show. Tonight their stripped down for something new. www.itsover.cc / www.myspace.com/itsoverkansascity
The Last Call Girls (Rockin' Country) www.thelastcallgirlsrock.com
Sugar Puppy and Her Lovely Dumplings - (Gnarla Natayet The World most Disgusting Superhero) Sugar puppy is a Donkey Show regular and most often the hit of the night. Her unique combination of comedy, dance, and performance art can only be fully grasped in her full one woman show. But lucky for us we get a little teaser on the 1st. And sometimes the tease is the best part. www.sugarpuppy.net
Rocky Flamingo (Vaudeville Band) - Rocky has not been seen since the Donkey Show at the Fahrenheit Ballroom. He is back with a vengeance showing off his prowess on Banjo-Uke and backed up by members of the Grand Marquis he can't go wrong.
Mark Smeltzer (Rural Grit Stomp) - Mark is a fixture in KC's Folk & Bluegrass scene. He is widely revered for building his own instruments such as, a mandolin made of frying pans, banjo string, and a tuning peg. A cello made of a snow shovel etc... He can be seen almost every Monday night at Rural Grit Happy hour at The Brick.
Stuck in a Straitjacket (Sketch Comedy Film) - This is a troop of KC residents that decided Kentucky Fried Movie was not funny enough and made their own. The movie, Stuck in a Straitjacket, is genuinely funny. Unfortunately, they can only show a few skits from the show, but it's more than enough to keep you laughing. stuckinastaightjacket@gmail.com
Mike Medeiros (Comedian) - 10 minutes of stand-up, and the possibility of audience participation ala Who's Line Is It Anyway.

Crazy Talk, Corkscrew Boar, and Slimm Spins @ MIKES TAVERN
I missed Crazy Talks last show at Daveys by minutes. I was scrambling to get there but it didnt happen. See, just prior to that show I paid a visit to their Myspace home and dug what I heard. Memories of my youth came rushing back when I heard that sound. No they arent that old it simply reminded me of cornfield keggers in Iowa.sound blaring from the car stereo, flirting with cute boys and a curfew at midnight I knew I was gonna miss. They would have been so excellent in that setting.I know that does nothing for you, the reader, unless you traipsed through that cornfield with me. Theyre rock-n-roll without caution, and no doubt a few reckless anthems in em. -di

Forrest Whitlow and The Pickles, The Tuna Helpers and Art & Fashion with Kris Devlin @ THE BRICK
Dont miss local rock and roll, singer/songwriter Forrest Whitlows new project with a bit of a country swagger featuring John Bersuch (Bacon Shoe, Minds Under Cover) on drums, Jeff Harshbarger (Tango Lorca, Malachy Papers) on bass, and DJ Clem (Wylde Chipmunk and the Cuddly-Poos) on guitar (when available). The night kicks off with the fashions of Kris Devlin and then The Tuna Helpers hit the stage. This all female trio from Austin is made up of Adrienne Sneed, (singer/guitarist), her sister Bethany on keyboards and her ex-girlfriend, Khattie Quinones on drums. Apparently this lethal mix of hormones adds to their punk, goth and pop stew always making for a live show filled with surprises, antics and an ensuing argument or two.

Destroyer and White Whale @ RECORD BAR
What started as a home-recording experiment in the mid-nineties by Vancouvers Dan Bejar, he has just released his seventh full-length Destroyer album, Destroyers Rubies, and with just a brief listen he has me curious. Not having enough time with Bejars music to write about it my own words I took the following from his Merge Records bio describing him as having a Dylanesque flare for biting and sardonic wit and (his) nods to the glam and bombastic folk approaches of early T-Rex and Bowie. I think this is a telling description as listening to Destroyer drums up images of New York City, the Velvet Underground and the Andy Warhol Factory where Bejars music would have found a fitting home. But then again, thats just one girls quick glimpse. Aside from Destroyer, Bejar has also contributed a few songs and vocals to Canadian band The New Pornographers. At the very least we know he has great taste. -jaq

RECENT RELEASES:
Hank III Straight to Hell Released February 28th, 2006 (Uncensored Version Bruc Records)
He may sound like his granddaddy but the one rounding out the Williams triptych waves a different flag. If you like pop Nashville country this is not a record for you. But keep reading and do something good for yourself. Okay the licks are country but the lyrics will surely have him banned from Wal-Mart and I like it like that. CD #1 in this double CD release has, just this week, raised him to the top of my list of reasons to love country music. When the CD is not playing Im singing along to the songs playing in my head. Fans of the documentary Dancing Outlaw will dig Track #5, a tribute to D. Ray White and his most famous son, Jesco, (or is that Elvis? Jessie? or the devil in himself?). I knew that family in Boone County, WV would one day make their way to a lyric. CD #2 is 42 minutes of experimentation, let it roll, theres some treats in there but if its not CD #1, its surely this second CD that gave the CD its name - Straight to Hellits unexplainable.
Pick it up and youll hear why this man should become an icon of his genre. Its been a long time since Ive given a record 5 stars but this one is well on its way. -di

JAQS NOTES:
Future of Music Coalition
I recently had the opportunity to hear a musician panel titled "Ten Things You Can Do to Change the World". The panelists included Steve Earle, Damian Kulash (OK Go), Hank Shocklee (President Shocklee Entertainment), Chris Walla (Death Cab for Cutie) and Jenny Toomey (Executive Director, Future of Music Coalition) as moderator. The focus of the panel was on musician activists and how to balance acclaim and the public soapbox. So here is where one might expect me to go through the "list of ten", however I digress. Maybe on another day and another discussion we will venture into the full list, but for now, I am going to just hit on number "10". Number "10" is "Get Health Insurance". It seems so simple, number "10", "Get Health Insurance". But it really isn't that easy for a musician/artist to get quality health insurance and still afford to eat. As I have learned from personal experience, if you are not employed by a company offering a group plan, you spend a lot of money for very li
ttle in the world of the individual health insurance coverage. And it can be overwhelming and frustrating trying to find an insurance plan that fits your needs and your budget. So near the end of my hour listening to the panel, Toomey took the lead to discuss number "10" and provide information on the Future of Music Coalition, in particular, HINT (Health Insurance Navigation Tool). I urge every musician/artist to visit www.futureofmusic.org, click on the HINT link, and spend a little time on the resources page. HINT offers a Health Insurance Overview of seven ways a musician/artist can obtain health insurance; a free telephone advice service where you can talk with an "actual person" who will discuss your personal situation and your options; an online service to schedule an appointment; a glossary of terms to help understand the insurance jargon; and numerous resources to help you find a plan that fits you and your family. This email might even seem a bit overwhelming, but I can
assure you the Future of Music Coalition website is highly user friendly and easy to navigate. You, as musicians and artists, are extremely important to our culture and community as a whole. I, for one, would not make it through the day without my tunes du jour guiding me down the road. So please, think of yourselves and your health first and take a visit to Future of Music Coalition. www.futureofmusic.org

DIS NOTES:
Kansas City Music.its been awhile since we raved and its long over due. Yes, the fact that this email goes out each week is a tribute to the excellent music brewing in these parts but sometimes you need to have a bit of a love fest. So sit down as I pull out my pulpit. I have something to tell you. I dont know if other towns have it as good as we do, but on any given night lately you can go out and see some damn fine music. Some bands strong and solid, some that play now and then and others just breaking the sceneand ya just hope that its not a passing fancy and youll get to see them again. First, The Golden Hearted Whores. Last Friday night their drummer couldnt make it, so two others, Scottie Fletcher (ex-Dragqueen guitarist) and Jason Meier (Honeywagen who traveled in from Lawrence) both beat it down to Daveys to fill in as Deputy Whores with less than an hours notice. And they rocked it. With few cues from the regular Whores it made for an exciting show and, anyway,
those songs could probably play themselvesthey are that good. Next night, different bar. The Brick showcased seasoned musicians in new formation in the Broken Onlys. Another fine songwriting machine. They had the full bar up on their feet and likely left us all waiting for the next show. There are some songs for the ladies and thats a wise thing for any band to include in their line-up. Pendergast closed the night and proved once again why this is one of my all-time favorite bands. There are a few bands out there that do something so well and so soulfully, leaving it hard to believe they ever put down their instruments - its what they should be doing all the time. Finally, my show goin weekend ended on Monday at the Grand Emporium. Its a tough place to play. Lots of tile and it just doesnt sound good but The Gaslights showed why it rarely matters where a band plays if they have something to back it. With harsh stage lights, bright enough to film a talk show, they took the
stage like troopers with what appeared to be elevated confidence from their recent time on the road and abroad. They outshined the venue. It topped off a weekend of great live KC music, the kind that makes you want to hit another bar and do it all over again. Get out and gettchr self some.

What happens when you take local musicians out of the comfort of their bands and shake it up a bit? Lucky for us local musician John Ferguson (Federation of Horsepower, The Monitor, Bacon Shoe) had just that idea a couple years ago. Band Scramble #1s bore Anvil Chorus and Silver Shore. Three weeks ago musicians met at The Brick, tossed their names in a hat and were given until tonights showcase to write original music with their new band mates. Not too be missed! It features local musicians from Drakkar Sauna, Split Lip Rayfield, Parlay, Shebangs, and more

Doors open at 6:00 pm, and the silent auction will run from 6:00 pm to 10:30 pm., music starts at 7pm with: Drakkar Sauna, Jesus Christ Superstar, A Very Special Guest T.B.A., Truckstop Honeymoon and Pendergast.

JAQS NOTES:
Hello pups! Well, I am back from Austin and it proved to be another highly successful year of taking in as much live music as humanly possible at the SXSW music festival. In the weeks to come you can be sure I will draw on my discoveries and share my adventures in greater detail, but for now, highlights from South Texas. My traveling companions were the greatest and somehow managed not to kick my sober butt to the curb. As for accommodations, The Days Inn University has garnered a bit of celebrity as it houses the trendy open all night Star Caf. But for our crew who had to make it our home for three nights it now has the name Roach Motel. For those who know me you can imagine I did my fair share of bitching about the Roach Motel. However, you can be sure I did not let it ruin the weekend as I was continually hit in the face with one amazing rock and roll moment after another. I saw an hour and a half live interview with Chrissie Hynde (one of my two favorite rock chicks) on
Friday followed by a live performance by The Pretenders on Saturday. The show was completely geared towards die hard fans as they stayed away from super hits even refusing to accommodate the crowd cries for Brass In Pocket. I was blown away and can only hope to be lucky enough to catch their live show again. I anxiously waited in line and eventually squeaked in the Continental Club doors to catch Detroits The Paybacks highlighting songs off of their soon to be released new album. And the new release is going to be quite yummy pups. Immediately following I caught a down and dirty set by Andre Williams where KCs own Burly-Q Girls Etta Vendetta and Taylor set the Continental Club on fire with their brand of burlesque. Then there was the Brian Jonestown Massacre where the crowd waited in anticipation to see what antics BJMs mad maestro Anton Newcombe had in store. We were all in luck, instead of pitching one of his well-known fits and exiting the stage, Anton actually refused to s
top playing, raising and uproar among club employees who couldnt figure out how to pull the plug. He should ignore the antagonistic ranting from the crowd more often as it proved to be one fantastic performance. The rest of the weekend was littered with performances by some of my favorites such as Bobby Bare Jr., Lucero and Steve Poltz as well as some surprises. Being someone who once threatened to throw the heavily Jay Bennett influenced Wilco album Summerteeth out the window, I stumbled upon a Jay solo set, purchased one of his albums and have not taken it out of the CD player since I have been home. Needless to say, SXSW has once again proven to be the greatest show on earth, sorry Barnum and Bailey, you are out.

DIS NOTES:
This is it kids, our favorite living-large record store in local pants is closing its doors April 9th. Recent rumors of a buyer to save the store have fallen through so April 9th will be it. As sad as it is for the individual were happy for Anne and Kurt as they take on new adventures, and our best to their tremendous staff too. Theyve graciously given for so many years.in-stores, organized caravans to regional shows, wisely suggesting music when were in need of something new, huge supporters of local bands/artists, and providing a place for hours and hours of random browsing, knowing when you walk through those doors at Westport Rd. and Main you were going to leave with something great. Its been a great run. This Sunday, March 26th The Afterparty will play the last in-store at 2pm. While the show is free bring your cash as the deals will be a-rollin. Everything is 75% off. Theres plenty of goods for the takinthey are still brining in back stock and you have until April 9
th to grasp the loot. Be sure to sign the Book of Memories, get your photo taken and become a part of Kansas City history. There will be a tribute to Recycled Sounds on April 7th at Record Bar so mark it on your calendar. Much music and good times to be had as the music fades.

While The Master's Away The Dog Will Play

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

Hey Pups, slight change in schedule for next week. Jaq’s headed to SXSW, Di’s headed to NYC and we think Max “The Ever Happy Sad Dog” is up to no good and planning a big fiesta while the rest of us are away.  Sad Dog will hit your inbox a little early next week and will be what we call the “The Bare Bones”. For you new Sad Pups, “The Bare Bones” means we will give you a flat list of shows without our usual insight, bells and whistles. Sometimes the ladies need a little break. If you are planning to send us details on any events please do so before Tuesday, March 14 and we’ll do our best to get them in. Thanks. Now read on, it’s a hot list this week…

Deadstring Brothers, and The Litigators @ DAVEY’S UPTOWN

10pm; $7

A few weeks back I mentioned the Deadstring Brothers newest release “Starving Winter Report” and I’m back to report that my CD changer has yet to relinquish its good tiding. They’re on their way to SXSW and are making a stop at Davey’s Uptown to showcase this newest release that recently hit the streets on February 28th. They call Detroit home but that’s where the comparisons end from the city’s brethren bands of
note. I didn’t know they grew country styling in those parts. While they are new to the Bloodshot Records catalog they don’t lack experience as evident by their history of sharing tours with The Sadies, My Morning Jacket, Cat Power and Jesse Sykes. In classic album fashion “Starving Winter Report” doesn’t contain favorite songs but should rather be listened to from start to finish, it’s just that good. Vocal harmonies, horns, keys and pedal steel, at first listen there is an undeniable recognition of Stones’ era “Exile on
Main Street”, rooted in blues but with classic country storytelling. Something tells me that kudos are deserved beyond my audio experience with these folks. Really looking forward to this show…. -di

The Down Trunks (CD Release) w/ Shurman and Chad Rex @ MIKE'S TAVERN
L.A. band Shurman is back at Mike's and touring on their first full length record "Jubilee". Described as alt-country with a mix of Tom Petty, their single "Drownin'" has been showing up on the country music
charts and in heavy rotation on CMT. I was urged to go check out Shurman the last time they were in town but unfortunately they played the same night as Jon Dee Graham, and well, Shurman drew the short straw. KC's own, The Down Trunks, are celebrating the release of their 3rd album "Three Rings and a Dagger" and Mr.
Chad Rex is back from Austin, TX whe
re he has been mixing his new record due out in May.
Chad will be on the road in Spring in support of his new
release.

SUNDAY, MARCH 12

It’s Over In-store @ RECYCLED SOUNDS

2pm; free

This will be one of the final in-store performances at Recycled sounds as sadly enough they will be closing doors for good at the end of March. It’s Over will play a 30 minute set and the boys guarantee their set will be sure to make you smile and dance whether you want to or not! Be sure to come prepared to pick up some great music as everything in the store will be 50% off! We will miss our lazy days shopping for tunes at this KC institution.

Dropkick Murphy’s w/ The Tossers, Horrorpops @ BEAUMONT CLUB

I dropped the coin for the big ticket tonight but not for Dropkick Murphy’s. I honestly have no opinion on them one way or the other….but maybe that will change after this show. I happily tossed out nearly $17 to catch The Tossers, a band that unfortunately doesn’t make it this way all too often. I happened across them back in the mid-90’s whilst living in Madison, WI. From that first show they’ve been one of my favorite live acts not to mention they get regular air play in my humble abode….and not just in the month of the Shamrock. They beautifully mix traditional Irish sound while never neglecting their punk rock early years of Chicago’s South Side from which they hail.  If previous performances are any indication it will be drenched with consumption. No fear, th
ey are the only band I’ve seen go from stumbling loose mouth drunken stage banter to spot on execution with each song. It’s truly something to see… -di

Figure 70, Don’t Die, Outlaw, and Give it Up @ THE ANCHOR

3-6pm, yep it’s an early-early show!

There’s a new venue in town. We’ve yet to check it out but want to start listing their shows as we see fit. We understand live music will regularly take place on Sundays 3-6pm. And this week there’s a little punk-hardcore show if your Sunday needs it.

It’s in the West Bottoms so we’ll give you some directions. Take the 12th St. Bridge; right on Central; and another right onto State Line Rd. Address: 935 State Line, KCMO (you might want to Mapquest that, Di’s not so good with directions).

MONDAY, MARCH 13

The Capes @ RECORD BAR

This show is not 100% confirmed. We have our fingers crossed that these boys head back this direction, but check in with the Record Bar to get the thumbs up!

What a treat!!! If you missed them a couple of weeks ago I suggest you take advantage of this second chance to check em’ out. Their release “Hello” is still hangin’ strong in the ol’ CD player and their live show is worth every penny. -jaq

JAQ’S NOTES:

Well pups, it’s that time of year again…SXSW is just around the corner. I am chompin’ at the bit to board that great steel bird that will take me to Austin, TX. For those of you who don’t know the skinny on SXSW I will tell you that it is a live music lovers dream. It is like throwing a cat in a barrel of catnip or a dog in a field of rawhide chews. Though my trip has been a bit delayed by a work commitment, I am nonetheless crazy excited about touching ground in the great music city. For three full days and nights I will scurry from club to club with my south-by music schedule in my back pocket in an attempt to catch as many live shows as possible from a list of hundreds. Ah…bliss!!! In the midst of the hustle I will be stopping by to visit some KC/Lawrence bands who will be gracing the Austin stages. I man
aged to drum up a bit o’ info on a few of these bands for those of you making the journey South as well. In addition, local record label Anodyne Records (Architects, String and Return, The Hearers, Dark Circles) will join labels Sidecho, Cheap Lullaby Takeover and End Sounds for a Multi-Label Showcase Friday and Saturday
11:30am to 4:30 pm.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we know em’, we love em’ and Sad Dog is proud to present soon to be SXSW favorites, KC’s own:

LAST OF THE V8’S (6pm) @ TROPHYS (Outside Stage - 2008 Congress St.)

As always, whether in KC or Austin, I do my best investigating but please check venues, SXSW website and band websites to verify shows and showtimes. And I am sorry if I have left anyone off of this list but I will post it again in next weeks Sad Dog so send me additions or changes.

So it’s Austin or Bust Pups!!!! You will be flooded with great stories from the road when I return!

DI’S NOTES:

Movies…..films about music. Why aren’t there more movies about music. It’s the cultural backbone of my existence. There’s about nothin’ I love more than a great documentary or blockbuster, done well, about my favorites. And here’s the strange dichotomy I’ve faced recently: “The Portrait of Billy Joe”, the Billy Joe Shaver documentary vs. “Walk the Line”, the Johnny Cash blockbuster. Last Friday I finally saw “Walk the Line” and I loved it. At the end of the film the feeling of being in love rushed over me. Granted I don’t know from where it stemmed….Joaquin Phoenix, Johnny & June’s story or simply from watching a great film. I personally don’t think Johnny Cas
h can be recognized enough. I went into the film with clenched fists and halfway-closed-eyes, hoping it would live up to all I’ve read in his biographies. I came out of it with a big old grin and rush to hit play on my favorite Johnny Cash CD. (Sidebar: I also saw “Capote” last week and while Phillip Seymour Hoffman made a command performance I do believe an injustice was done by not giving the golden boy to
Phoenix.)

Here’s my conflict. Recently I also viewed the documentary “The Portrait of Billy Joe”. Billy Joe Shaver is an equally talented song writer and performer in the same vain. The lucky straw has yet to fall his way and in fact historically the biz has done their part to make sure he’s not fairly recognized. The documentary is the equivalent of a C-Movie despite the fact Robert Duvall, a big Shaver fan, is the Executive Producer. Shaver also made an appearance in Duvall’s film “The Apostle” (1997). However, this documentary left me sickened that such a wonderful artist may be left with a lousy piece of film, shy of an hour, to document his career and the tragic stories that course his life. If you are new to Billy Joe than by all means rent the documentary and introduce yourself to a great. Or do one better and pick up his autobiography, “Honky Tonk Hero” or even bett
er just listen and catch him live when he heads our way. Then spread the word. Johnny Cash called Shaver his favorite songwriter. And, that’s a start….

DI’S NOTES PART II

This week is nuts. Too much to share.

These words should be about Lucinda herself but if you don’t know how great Ms. Williams is by now there’s no help for you. We made our way to the sold out show last Friday at Voodoo Lounge. Our first venture out to the fairly new venue located within the confines of Harrah’s Casino…yeah I was a bit scared. Kudos needs to be given where it is deserved. Stellar sound. Impeccable really. Probably the best sound of any show or concert I’ve heard….and my ears are not 100% so I appreciate that kind of thing greatly. We arrived 15 minutes shy of the 7pm ticket time to find that the first performer was well into his set and seats were full. Note that: arrive early. No matt
er, Lucinda took the stage a safe distance past ticket time so all was good…..until you try and get a drink. Mind you, the bars are plentiful and spacious, well staffed and lines for this particular show where minimal. However, this is the type of establishment that employs bartenders with trickery. Yep, here comes the second reference to the movie “Cocktail” in two weeks. You have to wait for the bartenders to artistically pop that bottle cap or toss that shaker Circe-style before your beverage of choice is delivered. Entertaining? Yea, sometimes. But a bit of a bother for someone that is there to see music and just wants to get back to the good view. These antics might be better saved for the late night dance patrons that are shuffled in once the live music closes down. Beware: when the live music stops, that’s your immediate clue to make your way to the exit or be faced with numerous large lovely bald white men to help you along your way. All in all, another great venue for live
music in KC.

The Green 17 Tour w/ Flogging Molly, Scotch Greens, and Rolling Blackouts @ BEAUMONT CLUB
Flogging Molly mixes traditional Irish music with a heavy dose of punk rock often drawing comparisons to the Pogues. I have to send out a shout to a Sad Dog friend Eric. He has been raving about Flogging Molly and urging everyone he knows to get a dose of their high-energy get ya bouncin up and down moshing sound. And to add an interesting sidenote, Lucinda Williams, who will be performing tonight at Harrahs VooDoo Lounge, has a guest appearance on the Flogging Molly tune Factory Girls off of their 2004 release Within a Mile of Home. Who knows, maybe there will be a Lucinda sighting at the Beaumont this eve.
Visit the band websites at www.floggingmolly.com and www.scotchgreens.com or head to www.sideonedummy.com/jon/fm/ for more Green 17 Tour dates.

Trivia Riot with Maygun 7-9pm @ THE BRICK

Friday Hip-Hop Fix featuring Reach, Deep Thinkers and Sounds Good @ RECORD BAR
I think it was the 2004 Pitch Music Awards Showcase that I stumbled into the Hurricane in time to catch the Deep Thinkers. You would be hard pressed to find much, if not any, hip hop in my ol music collection. However, that night the Deep Thinkers turned my head in a new direction and it proved to be one of those great musical moments when you head out to see one band then are completely blown away by another. The Deep Thinkers are a socially conscious hip-hop duo known for instilling critical consciousness brought to all oppressed people through sound (www.myspace.com/deepthinkers). If, like me, your show bill has already been booked for this Friday evening, I suggest you find yourself a copy of their release Necks Move out now and guaranteed to not disappoint. Take a visit to their site and check em out for yourself. -jaq

The Iguanas @ KNUCKLEHEADS
Ahhhh, The Iguanas! Back in the early 90s I was bartending at a little neighborhood bar in Ames, Iowa called Dugans Deli. The kind of place that that you stop in for a long neck after work or on your way to a night class. Anyway, one of my fellow bartenders hailed from New Orleans and often slipped The Iguanas into the changer just when things started to get surly. My fellow drink slayer didnt always have the best taste in music or flow behind the bar. I often found myself ducking flying shakers as he made an attempt to embody Brian Flanagan (Tom Cruise) from Cocktail. But his one redeeming quality was to hit it just right with The Iguanas. See The Iguanas hail from New Orleans but they have that certain Latin pop swagger that makes your hips move and in my case cooled my growl just when I wanted to rip the nose off that one unruly patron whose only name for me was hey you. di

SUNDAY, MARCH 5
Year Long Disaster, and The Gaslights @ FRED P. OTTS
Well this should be an interesting night at P. Otts. My favorite kind of bill, one built of bands with drastic differences in sound. The Gaslights return from their month long tour of the Northern States, Belgium and Holland. This will be their first night back in KC and will be playing off the roll of the road. Year Long Disaster is a full-on power rock trio baring some pedigree in Daniel Davies, son of The Kinks Dave Davies. Also of note bassist Rich Mullins did some time in Speedealer (formerly REO Speedealer before they were sued by REO Speedwagon) and Karma to Burn.

JAQS NOTES:
For those of you who know me by now it wont surprise you that I am jumping on the opportunity to covert every last one of you pups to the Lucinda Williams way. And many of you may think it a crime for me to pump and artist who is soon to be performing a sold out show. I am not here to rub it in, I am here to inform so that next time Lucinda rolls through town you will realize the importance of the advance ticket. Everyone has those artists that they put on their list of favorites, but there is always that one that is the constant by which you judge all others. For some its Neil Young, for some Dylan and for me it is Lucinda. Her sound is a mix of blues, country, rock and folk and she often throws out the names of Townes Van Zandt and Howlin Wolf during her live performances. Her lyrics can be brutally raw and she has long put behind her any fear of laying all her deepest emotions out on the table. She can don leather pants and a biker-T while still making a cowboy hat seem r
ight at home on her head. When she writes about lost love and heartache, and she does that often, she bypasses the superficial and gets to the heart of her pain. She won a Grammy for her fifth album Car Wheels on a Gravel Road for best contemporary folk album but has had little commercial radio success. A brilliant songwriter she did receive commercial songwriting recognition when Mary Chapin Carpenter covered her song Passionate Kisses and her song Joy has been covered by a plethora of artists from Casey Chambers to soul singer Bettye LaVette. Most recently Like A Rose can be found on the official motion picture soundtrack of TransAmerica.
If you dont have a Lucinda recording run out, purchase World Without Tears and live with it awhile. But beware, as it is easy to get hooked!

DIS NOTES:
I checked in with myself today and it seems Ive spent too much time writing about music and not enough time getting out to see live music. My mental health requires it and its time to start setting things right. I knew something was off. So Im making it brief this week and heading out to Daveys tonight to see The Broken Onlys, Cody Wyoming and The Silverman. Hope to see some of you there.
