A Man Needs a Leg: Billy is a local musician and drummer. In 2005 he was voted Best Drummer in Kansas City by Pitch readers. Hes currently a member of KCs Blackpool Lights. We dont know Billy personally but if his friends and fans are any testament to his character hes a good dog. In February 2005 Billy was diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma. He has endured a year of chemotherapy and in August 2005 doctors were forced to amputate Billy's left leg above the knee. While it will be at least 5 years until he is considered officially cancer-free, his first set of tests after the operation were negative and showed no signs of cancer.
Hes a good pup in need of a quality prosthetic leg.
This weekend theres a benefit to help out in this endeavor. The new leg will allow him to walk down steps leg over leg, walk up and down inclines, and walk on uneven ground (gravel, grass, etc). It will also allow Billy to be more stable and able to carry heavy things like drum equipment and turntables...something he cannot do currently.
The price tag for all of this is in the neighborhood of $60,000 and his insurance policy is only paying for about half of that. This means Billy and his family have to come up with over $30,000. This particular prosthesis is a necessary item for him to live a "normal" life.

I wish I were one of those lucky folks selecting music for a movie soundtrack. Or better yet, the one that writes the screen play, directs, casts AND does the soundtrack. I would write a western film noir with rattle snakes, sexy burly bad guys, mysterious women, dusty, cactus strewn landscapes and forgotten masterpieces of architecture that begs your entrance. That soundtrack would feature American Catastrophe. -di

NEWS:
The Official Rock and Roll Radio Show, 2-3pm, 90.1FM www.kkfi.org (KC)
We recently received some sad news, that due to programming adjustments at KKFI, Gary Clouds Official Rock and Roll Radio Show will soon be coming to an end after a four-year run. An official end date has not been announced but it could be as soon as the next couple of weeks. We are friends and fans and will miss tuning in on our lazy Sunday afternoons. Be sure to tune in this week, and final week(s) to come, as we are sure some special guests and lovers of the rock will be stopping by to share their favorite tunes and stories. Thanks to Gary, Roach, Cody, Slimm and the many other Official Rock and Roll DJs who have taken part in celebrating the Kansas City rock scene over the airwaves!
RELEASES:
The following two releases have been in my mental queue, and as of yesterday, I made my purchase. Two completely different discs but both are right on the money and very worthy of adding to any music collection. -jaq
Calexico Garden Ruin (2006, Quarterstick Records)
I only discovered Calexico last year, but since their 2004 release Convict Pool fell into my hands, they currently sit as one of my favorite bands. Calexico hails from Tuscon, AZ and embrace the sounds of the southwest mixing mariachi, jazz and the swagger of the old west spaghetti western. Listening to their music actually transports you to the red clay cactus littered backdrop of the southwest. In the short time I have spent with Garden Ruin it has me hooked. It rolls from dreamy ballads like Yours and Mine to the high- energy churn of Deep Down. Beware prepared for a road trip before you make the purchase as it inspires a flight west. For those of you, like me, who have a direct line to I-tunes and have not discovered the virtue of patience, this is an album to be purchased with package and all as the package deal comes with a making of Garden Ruin.
I hope to have the opportunity to check out this full- bodied ensemble live in the near future, and if I could build the bill, KCs own American Catastrophe would be warmin them up. -jaq

Flaming Lips At War With the Mystics (2006, Warner Bros. Records, Inc.)
The Flaming Lips, long time cult favorites, began inching their way into the mainstream with their 2002 release Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots and have popped up as headliners on the big summer outdoor blowout festivals in the last year. They continue to ride that wave, and with their new release At War With the Mystics, may just solidify a mainstream following. I recently caught a section of an interview with Flaming Lips Wayne Coyne on NPR. I believe it was Christian Bordal who was conducting the interview and commented that listening to At War With the Mystics was like riding a rollercoaster. After giving it a listen I must concur. Heavy and playful At War is a mix of psychedelic experimental ballads as well as funk and groove rock, each song standing on its own and proving to be another stellar Lips album from beginning to end. This album transcends genres, hanging out there in the universe of music appealing to Radiohead fans as well as those who embrace the jam ban
d scene. The Flaming Lips will be headlining the main stage Saturday, June 10 at the Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival in Lawrence, KS in June. You can be sure they will entertain the masses with their video montage and furries to boot. -jaq

This is the show, The Condensed Tribute to Alfred Hitchcocks The Birds, that marked the beginning of LNT as we know it. I had the privilege of seeing this first performance, busted a rib from the unending laughter it inspired and lived to urge you check out this encore performance. -jaq

DIS NOTES:
Its late Wednesday night and I leave for a work trip tomorrow to Peoria, IL and I have yet to pack for this weeklong outing. Typically when I travel for work I land somewhere fairly fun if not glamorous but this trip is neither. Itll be my 5th trip to this particular destination and I come back appreciating KC music more and more. I often have a chance or two to get out and explore the nightlife on these trips but Peoria has left me beyond disappointment every time. Theres not even a lowbrow cover band to ring out the every-faithful but dreaded Mustang Sally or a somewhat respectable jukebox in town as far as I can tell. I have however loaded up the I Tunes on my new phone with my local favs to get me through the week. Yep, and I even figured out how to create ringtones recently and will have Cretin 66s Smash Out Windows blasting out whenever someone rings me to put out a fire. And when the boss calls??? You got it; Ill hear Parlays Satan. A girls gotta stay entertaine
d.
