KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

FRIDAY, MAY 26
Jon Dee Graham (trio) @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
7:30pm $7.00adv $10dos there will be NO OPENING band
Im not even sure where to start with this man. Often times his music is the one and only thing I want to hear. Gravitas. Wit. And the ability to communicate wisdom in the sheer coolest of ways. Its probably those qualities that provided the validity to name Jon Dee Musician of the Year at the acclaimed SXSW music and media conference in Austin Texas this year. Hes on tour promoting the new disc "Full on Freedom which also marks his departure from New West Records. And if you want some affordable art for your walls pick up this months No Depression with Jon Dee and Alejandro Escovedo on the cover and frame it. This will be one of Daveys Uptown best shows of the year, and not to be missed.

JAQ & DIS NOTES:
The ladies of Sad Dog have been bitten by the spring / summer bug. We can hardly contain ourselves and are finding it difficult to sit still and focus on writing. With Friday peeking around the corner and Sad Dog favorite Jon Dee Graham soon to be hittin the stage at Daveys, we have an enormous itch to get out and check out the fantastic hum of live music Kansas City has to offer. So we leave you to use our little e-newsletter as a guide to perusing the Myspace pages & websites and mull over your ever-ending live music options this Memorial Day weekend as we gear up to hit the songwriters night at Daveys this eve. Be safe this weekend pups and we will be back to share our stories from the road, as Jauqui is off with Its Over to explore the big city of Chicago, and as for Diana, she will be exploring the roads of Midtown as Memorial Day is moving day! Jaq certainly does know how to pick her weekends away!

No Sleeping Dogs This Week

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

Sad Dog, with our friend Roach and Spice of Life Productions, have put together one hellava line-up of high-energy rock and roll! It is rare that we get to put our paws into the creation of a night of rock, so check out Saturday nights show at The Brick with our friends The Safes from Chicago and local favs Its Over and The Litigators!!! Join us for a healthy dose of raucous and rowdy fun that will allow you to check your troubles at the door and just enjoy the ride!

FRIDAY, MAY 19
The Gaslights, Diplomats of Solid Sound and Truckstop Honeymoon @ RECORD BAR
The Gaslights are gearin up to hit the Record Bar where the whiskey will flow and their honky-tonkin rock sounds will fill the room. Miss Abigail will pour out her heart and soul through lyrics that are raw and real and tell the tale of life in the Midwest. The boys of The Gaslights are some of KCs finest and a perfect match to Abbys country rock vocals. Gotta love em! Its been far too long since I have spent the night with the sweet sounds of The Gaslights. Joining them this eve are the Diplomats of Solid Sound, the self-proclaimed ambassadors of instrumental soul, and the charming and humorous duo Truckstop Honeymoon. -jaq

The Rather-Nots, The Sixteens, The Last Call Girls and Dave Crawford as Kandi Kanabi @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
It appears that you can hit just about any live music venue tonight and have a good time. You may know Ms. Kandi Kanabi from KCs SwitchHitter. Well tonight she takes the stage at Daveys in a rare solo performance. There are some other lovelies on this bill. The Sixteens features one of the best female rock vocalists Kansas City has to offer. The country-rock wit of The Last Call Girls simply tells it like it is from the perspective of a Midwest gal.
www.myspace.com/thelastcallgirls

Valient Thorr and The Last of the V8s @ THE BRICK
Oh pupsthat which is Valient Thorr is one crazy ride. Inspirational heavy metal that will leave you saluting the rock and roll gods as well as rolling in fits of laughter. It may be spectacular, or may just be a spectacle; whatever you call it is well worth the price of admission.

Manos Rojas Festival de Flamenco Noche Flamenco III, 8:30pm @ JACK-O-LANTERN BALLROOM (3921 Baltimore, Westport Road and Baltimore)
Manos Rojas School of Flamenco Music and Dance presents Kansas Citys first Flamenco festival. A new Sad Dog friend turned me on to this event. Not one to have much Flamenco music in my collection, I have always been drawn to flamenco sound. Most of my interactions with this music style have come from artists / bands who incorporate the sound into their music. I site Calexico as one of my favorite bands, a band that most definitely incorporates this Latin influence in their music. I find myself constantly reaching for Joe Elys album Letter to Laredo which highlights the amazing talent of flamenco guitarist Teye. The evening features Rey Duran, Norma ONiel, Kristin Rinden, Lliam Christy, Esencias Flamencas (Miel Castagna, Beau Bledsoe, Lisandro Gonzales and Hector Aguirre) and the students of Manos Rojas. Admission is $35.00 and show includes dinner and wine.
Thanks for the heads-up Randy! -jaq

SATURDAY, MAY 20
The Safes, Its Over, The Litigators and Aubrey @ THE BRICK
Spice of Life Productions and Sad Dog Presents
The Safes: We are happy to host our Sad Dog friends heading back to KC from Chi-town and ready to tear it up! The Safes style is pure rock n roll fire with lyrics that cutdelivering first-listen hooks, smart lyrics and clever arrangements. They have a sizzling pop and rock sound thats sugar sweet on the outside with a snarling conviction on the insidepop tunesmiths who play with a punk rock intensity and live for the live show. It is always a treat when the OMalley Brothers hit the stage.
Its Over: As always, will be shellin out their unique blend of 50s and 60s rock. These guys are an absolute blast and have been known to incite smiles to spontaneously form on all faces in the crowd.
The Litigators always impress with their ass-shakin old school rock and roll. They are wild and perform full tilt from first note to the last.
Aubrey will be starting off the show with their brand of alternative ambient rock.
Complete with a crew of some of the best front men around, this show guarantees high-energy rock from beginning to end and will not allow you to escape the evening without a heavy dose of booty shakin.

Its the Grand Opening of Penn Valley Skate Park and it all kicks off at 11:30am.
The day features exhibitions by Salba, Matt Dove, Escapist Skateboarding Team Duo, and Its Over. If you got em, bring the kids. One of my colleagues took his kids to see Its Over at the recent kids show at Record Bar. His kids had a great time and he was one parent so happy to share the rock-n-roll he loves with his young ones. Rock/skateboarding/outdoors.this ones for you rock-n-roll parents! di

SUNDAY, MAY 21
The Broken Onlys and Cass County Lamenters @ FRED P. OTTS
This may be the show that gets me out on a Sunday night again. Its time for a priority readjustment on my part. This week is just maxed with some excellent line-ups this one rates up there on top. The classic country sound and sultry vocals of Cass Country Lamenters Ms. Venus Van Horn will make for an interesting night paired up with the rock-fueled country vocals of The Broken Onlys Gary Cloud. I wanna hear a duet with this pair in the house! -di

TUESDAY, MAY 23
Needmore Discs presents:
Boozeday Tuesday Matinee 8 - 10:30pm $5 @ MIKE S TAVERN
Featuring: Tarbox Ramblers and Amy Farrand
Although Tarbox Ramblers call Boston home one would never guess it. Rather, the sound surely must have been born in the back fields of Mississippi with the same musical ancestry as RL Burnside or the Black Diamond Heavies. The last time Tarbox Ramblers were scheduled to hit Mikes Tavern stage I paid a visit to their website to give em a listen. What hit my ears, or better put gut, is something special. This variety of blues is not a toe tapper its a heal stompper and it just creeps up from there. If the deep rasp of Michael Tarboxs vocal doesnt do it the blues-roots guitar grit will create a boogie hip shake of fierce proportions. Even the slower atmospheric-blues songs defy the listener to remain still and in place. I missed their first pass through town not this time. Their recent release A Fix Back East (you can give a good chunk of it a listen on their website and I suggest you do) is partially produced by the legendary Jim Dickinson (Big Star, True Believers, The
Replacements, Lucerothe list goes on and on). Good job Boozeday Tuesday for landing a slot for these guys once again. You couldnt find a better musician to share the stage then KCs Amy Farrand (Whiskey Boots/American Catastrophe/Shotgun Idols). -di

In Austin at SXSW 2004 my traveling pals led me to a Rounder Records Showcase with Slaid Cleaves on the bill. The beauty of SXSW is you find gems like Cleaves who were never before known to you. Hes possibly one of the most charming performers with an easy temperament to boot. Despite technical difficulties he found humor in it and carried on. Raised in Maine he is now a bona fide Texas singer-songwriter. His new release is a collection of songs by his friends and colleagues including Karen Poston, Michael O'Connor and Adam Carroll.

JAQS NOTES:
Sorry pups! No notes from me this eve. I have traded in my pen and a night of writing about live music for a ticket to see the Queen of Rockabilly, Wanda Jackson at Knuckleheads. This week is packed full of yummy shows, so get out and get yourself a taste!

DIS NOTES:
Jaqs right. This week is fierce with some excellent line-ups. Typically I can offer up some shows not to be missed but its fair game this week. Pick and choose wisely or make a rock-n-roll marathon of it. This week is set up so nicely you can just about land any where and it will be a wise gamble. We have a Sad Dog reader up in the Twin Cities thats an old friend of mine. We shot some emails back and forth this week about music and good shows weve seen. He pointed out that the list of bands I sent him were almost all Kansas City based. He has read Sad Dog a long time and asked me if the KC music scene is as good as we make it sound. I told him we cant fake this stuff. Theres no way Jaq and I could invest the time we do in Sad Dog if there wasnt a healthy local platform for us to work from. Touring bands are great and add all that more to our options but without consistency, quality and variety in local flavor forget it Sad Dog would likely not be.

On another note: Its no surprise that Jaq and I do not possess the same computer tech passion and savvy as we have for live music. If we did, we would have a website and likely relinquish this email pushing to days gone by. But with our limited skills we have created a Myspace presence. Weak as it may be at this point we do have goals and ambitions to someday have a space as fun as some of those we visit. We are slowly building our little web network and many of the bands we talk about are included in our list of pals. Pay a visit to www.myspace.com/saddogkc and become our friend. In the days and weeks to come we hope to build on what we have started.

Kinder Chaos: A Benefit for Childrens Mercy Hospital @ MIKES TAVERN
Presented by Pabst Blue Ribbon, this night features music by Gary Cloud (of The Broken Onlys), Tony Ladesich (of Pendergast), Mass St. Murder, Unknown Stuntman, Honeywagen, Shotgun Idols, and The Throttlers.
It seems weve become Benefits-R-Us here at Sad Dog HQ lately. But well let you in on a little secret. Most times these benefits are some of the best fun to be had. Theres a fiercely strong and generous music community that comes out to donate in-kind their talent. This annual benefit commenced in 2004. Local music fan Tom Krowas and family were given great care by Childrens Mercy when their two week old son was admitted to ICU. Its his way to say thank you by pulling together local bands and fans to raise some cash to help other families that have no means of paying and no insurance. Childrens Mercy puts forth strong community effort and Tom has lined up some the best local bands to help them out once again. It tis a benefit but this line-up looks like another roaring great time and will help out some pups in need to boot.

Wanda Jackson Queen of Rockabilly w/ Rumblejetts @ KNUCKLEHEADS SALOON
Some call her the Queen of Rockabilly, call her the Queen of Rock and Roll. She has been nominated twice for Best Performing Female Singer (Grammys), is an inductee into the The Rockabilly Hall of Fame, The International Hall of Fame, The Oklahoma Country Music Hall of Fame and The International Gospel Hall of Fame and she has recorded between 50 and 60 albums. Wanda has a fan base that spans the globe and at 68 years old is still playing honky-tonks around the world. Her newest album is a tribute to friend and one-time boyfriend Elvis Presley, the man that encouraged her to sing rock and roll in the 50s, before it was cool. I recently stood outside the Continental Club in Austin, TX with a line of people that extended down the block, all of us waiting to see Wanda perform. I missed the show but heard the praises as folks exited the club. She is a small lady full of fire and I am sure she will not only deliver some kickin music but remarkable stories as well. Needless to s
ay, I have my tickets in hand and will be rockin at Knuckeheads this Thursday eve. Tune into KKFI, 90.1 Friday, May 12, 5-7pm for Rockabilly Mood Swing and a live interview with the Queen herself. -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
Wolfgangs Vault
Bill Graham was known as the midwife of the modern rock concert. Born Wolfgang Grajonca in Berlin, Graham changed his name after his arrival in the states. That name, Bill Graham, will forever conjure up images of the San Francisco rock scene, in particular the spirit and free wheeling attitude and alternative culture of the late 60s and 70s. During this period is when Graham established himself as the rock promoter of the time if not all time. He operated and booked shows at the legendary live music venue Winterland in San Francisco adding to its claim to fame prestigious shows and acts such as The Last Waltz, numerous Grateful Dead performances, Jimi Hendrix, the last appearance of the Sex Pistols, The Tubes, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, The Ramones and many more. In addition to Winterland, Graham operated and booked legendary clubs Fillmore West (San Francisco) which proved to be a home and launching ground to the psychedelic music scene and bands such
as Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Van Morrison and Otis Redding as well as the Fillmore East (New York City). Point being, a large majority of these shows were recorded and archived in the Vault and you can streamline these performance on the Vault Radio. It really is a fantastic voyage through time as you catch amazing moments in musical history, most of which occurred before the majority of you pups were even a glimmer in your mom and pops eyes. Today at work I caught Bob Dylans performance of Romance In Durango, Live 1975; Van Morrisons Moondance 1970 @ Fillmore West; Neil Young, Bob Dylan and The Band @ Kezar Stadium 1975 and many many more gems that made my day roll by much quicker with much less humdrum entering the equation. For those who veer from anything associated with those psychedelic times, dont be afraid to dive in and give it a shot. You will be surprised at what you will find buried in Wolfgangs Vault.
(Much of this information was gathered at Wikipedia). Thank you Pete for the heads up!

DIS NOTES:
Whew, a jolt, or lack there of, of Peoria, IL is all a girl needs to get rejuvenated about the local music she loves. I cant even apologize or filter my comments about that cesspool of a town. Even for a savvy girl like myself I failed seeking out a live music joint with a bad cover of Mustang Sally. So when some tickets for a show happening at their arena landed in my hands my fellow travelers and I looked at each other said, what the hell, better than the hotel bar and they have to have beer. Even as I looked at those tickets printed Gretchen Wilson: The Redneck Revolution Tour with my head shaking, I cowboyd up and hit the ATM. Ill be damned if Im going to run out of libation cash at a show as I suspected it would be.
Before I go and trash any creditability I may have earned let me just state, I love a spectacle and I knew surely thats what the evening had in store for me. And quite frankly in times like this I look at overall production more than the sound ringing from the amplifiers so I was golden. Not to mention, get a few beers in meand checkI can find some enjoyment in just about anything. And with that I will say thank you to my music gods for Van Zant in the opening slot. Im a sucker for that southern rock back-field rock. Its just a good time. But Gretchen Wilson, <<shakes head>> what the hell is the matter with American consumers? Shes one step up from Brittany Spears but Nashville-countrified. Young lass I got your number. Your constant rambling about your chart topping record wont leash me in. Despite your grasp on those two young gals with home made G.W. tees scolding me in line at the girls room for calling out the Spears comparison doesnt qualify a validation. The Redne
ck Revolution is not propagating manners of young Americans. Give me a young punk anytime over that nastiness. I escaped with just a few bite marks on the ankles and one humbling moment, which brings me back to the cover song. Wilsons unremarkable set ended with one chilling rendition of Hearts Barracuda. While I cant stand an entire cover set, when chosen wisely the correct selection marking ones strengths or a darn good song can almost make up for an entire night of crap. Almost.

Ive probably used up my max on words tonight but I just cant end on a Gretchen Wilson note. Take a focused look back up there on the calendar above. We have a mighty one this week. My favorite time of year is here and its not marked by the Farmers Almanac or calendar. Its verified by the number of good shows there for the takin. My friend Cody and I were chatting about the wealth of diversity and quality in Kansas City right now. If you havent recognized that yet, its time. Get out and enjoy. For music lovers it just doesnt get any better than it is right now in Kansas City.
