FRIDAY, JUNE 30
The Down Trunks, Yellow No. 5, The Arkamo Rangers, and Leaving Smallville @ MIKES TAVERN
Yellow No. 5 celebrates the release of their third full-length CD Hen Pecked and Tongue Tied this week. And its about darn time too because my copy of 2004s Mud Road Superstars is about worn out. If you dig Old 97s you should check out these local boys. They also credit Johnny Cash, Uncle Tupelo and Ryan Adams as influences. -di

Pete Yorn @ BOTTLENECK (Lawrence, KS)
In-store Performance, 5:30 pm @ KIEFS DOWNTOWN MUSIC (823 Massachusetts, Lawrence, KS)
Like a ghost out of the shadows Pete Yorn is back on the road, and this time around out on the You and Me acoustic tour. As a bonus to this acoustic tour are in-store performances at local independent record stores. Each of his in-store performances will be recorded as a limited edition souvenir CD and sold exclusively at the host store. I still go back for a heavy dose of his debut 2001 release Musicforthemorningafter. I never did get my paws on the second release Day I Forgot, but apparently it is part of a trilogy, which will soon be complete with the upcoming release of Nightcrawler.
Unfortunately I cant make the trip West for this one, but if any of my friends in Lawrence make the in-store, pick me up a copy of that in-store CD! -jaq

SATURDAY, JULY 1
Doris Henson, The New Tragedies and String and Return @ GRAND EMPORIUM
This is a hot night of local music pups and word on the street is that the show starts early, The Doris Henson site is urging us to come out as early as 7pm and the Grand Emporium site lists show time at 8pm. Its a great night to get your indie rock on early and still roll into the late night. Sleep in and store up the stamina for this one.

Switchhitter, The Sixteens, The Holy Roses, and Grave Yard Nightmares @ THE BRICK
Need to get your cross-gender rock on!? Well take in the band fronted by Ms. Kandi Kanabi doing just that Switchhitter. Also on the bill is one of my local favorites The Sixteens a trio of lovely ladies playing high energy rock-n-roll with old pop-punk flavor (of the good variety) with lots of catchy hooks in their song catalog. Vocalist Amy Wilson for The Sixteens has one of the best rock voices in Kansas City. -di

Horseshoe Spatulas and The Lucky Graves @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
10pm; $6
I move along in life, driven by this insane love of live music, and trying to catch as many live bands as possible. KC is my home and I am constantly satiated by the amazing music I have at my fingertips. Unfortunately, at times, the planets just dont align and I find myself one step from making a connection with a band which I will soon fall in love. EnterLucky Graves. Saturday night I found myself at the Donkey Show at the Hurricane. I have heard from friends that The Lucky Graves are great! And as much as I trust the judgment of my friends, I have very particular tastes and tend to be a true show me kind of girl. That thought in mind, I was pretty excited The Lucky Graves were on the Donkey Show bill. With the first note, as their sound hit my ears, I immediately leapt to my paws and headed up front. These guys are great! They describe their music as indie, rock and blues but its much more than that. There are definitely songs that ride heavy on the indie tracks, but they a
lso have a smooth pop n soulful sexy sound as well. I AM HOOKED! Since Saturday I have worn out their three songs on Myspace in anticipation of a full-length album. Get it out guys, Ill be first in line to make the purchase. I highly urge you to check em out! -jaq

Pink Socks and Brimstone Howl @ FRED P. OTTS
Not quite the traditional night before a holiday night at P. Otts for some of us unlucky ones that have to work the next day. But, but, butthat just may not make a difference this week. These boys from Lincoln, NE are rebirthin a great old punk rock groove. Take a visit to the Brimstone Howls Myspace page. Its a wall of raw. To listen to Giants Chair is to know that they come from Kansas City. Playing a sound coined post hardcore/emo they no longer play as frequently as they did in the mid-90s. From time to time you are able to catch a show and it looks like you have the rare chance again on July 4th and, as far as we can tell The Brick is one of the few live music venues open this eve. IN STORES NOW:
Wolfmother (2006, Modular) Self-titled
Its been some time since Ive indulged in heavy psychedelic rock. Decades in fact until last weekend when I picked up the 70s influenced Wolfmothers debut self-titled May 2006 release. In fact, this style Im not particularly fond of nor can I think of one band from the genre that is included in my CD collection. Why then, would I buy such a CD? Ive succumbed to the marketing wiles of the promotion machine. Ive always been pretty proud of the fact that marketing doesnt work on me. Who am I kidding? While Wolfmother had been on the radar for a few of months I admit that I had never laid ears on them prior to picking up their CD last weekend. I simply had seen and heard their name mentioned on various sites I visit and pubs I read, knew that Rolling Stone called them one of ten to watch and they were receiving some acclaim for their recent Coachella performance. But, there I was, at a not to be mentioned big-time corporate store, their CD displayed nicely at the end of the
row and including a sticker with that Rolling Stone affirmation one of ten to watch. Sold. And, now that I have given it a few listens I dig it. Who knew? Will Sad Dog now feature all the best in heavy psych rock offerings not likely - but I like this Aussie power trio. I like the fact that they honed their sound over four years before ever recording a track or playing a show. I like that occasional punk/garage sound that enters on a couple tracks namely in the tune Apple Tree. No, nothing outright original in what they offer but damn fun to dust off that sound nonetheless. di

FRIDAY, JUNE 23
Hank III w/ The Murder Junkies @ BEAUMONT CLUB
Hank IIIs recent double CD release Straight to Hell is one of my favs thus far in 2006. He dedicates the record in part to GG Allin explaining the reason The Murder Junkies might share this bill. The Murder Junkies were the last band to back notorious punk rock performer GG Allin before his death in 1993. Hank III is the youngest in the Hank Williams lineage to make his mark in music. Sometimes its a country set and sometimes its a full on rock show and if you are lucky, a combination of both. Its $16.50 on Ticketmaster.com before those lovely convenience charges. Be warned if you are going to this show. The last two shows I bought via Ticketmaster for a Beaumont show marked a show time later than the actual start time. Staff at the Beaumont blamed Ticketmaster and Ticketmaster blamed the venue. Dont be a Sad Dog - call for actual show time or get there early!!!! This has been a public service announcement. Sonic Youth @ LIBERTY HALL (Lawrence, KS)
Ive had a few show injuries in my time. Unfortunately, they are due to my lack of grace and forceful clumsiness and not as a result of my rock-n-roll fierceness. A fractured ankle was mine for the taking at a Sonic Youth show back in the early 90swatch that bottom step at Liberty Hall. Sonic Youth marks their 25th anniversary as a band this year. Its not the length of your tenure but how well you do it. Back then we called it underground music and Sonic Youth were kings. The paved their way and are now considered by some as royalty in the genre lineage that became indie and alternative. di

IN STORES NOW:
Alejandro Escovedo The Boxing Mirror (2006, Back Porch Records)
A few weeks ago I purchased The Boxing Mirror
A. Because Alejandro put out a new album (his first studio album since 2001);
B. I have had the privilege of seeing him live over the past year with the extraordinary grouping of musicians who perform on the album; and
C. I had to lay to rest the whispers that the new album was not up to Alejandro par and that producer John Cale had overproduced the album. True to my nature I bought the disc, tore open the wrapper and immediately popped into the car stereo, confident that what I was about to hear what would far dispel the whispers. I am here to tell you that the disc has not left my side since first listen. Anyone who throws out the word overproduced in relation to this album obviously has not seen these songs performed live. I feel quite the opposite. I am amazed anyone could reign in the overpowering tower of sound that is created by two cellos, a violin, bass, drums, acoustic and electric guitar, keyboards, a stand up bass and an accordion, and corral it onto a disc. Live, the sound is mesmerizing, and recorded the songs still evoke the emotion of the live show. In true Alejandro style, he takes you on a journey through song from the driving garage rock sound of Sacramento & Polk to Evita
s Lullaby, a ballad of his mothers loss. Alejandros lyrics on The Boxing Mirror are his most personal to date and opens up a window that most people would not even dare look through. jaq

JAQS NOTES:
Recently Max (The Ever Happy Sad Dog) wanted to make a mix CD for his Aunt Laurens B-Day. I, of course, helped him a bit, because without the opposable thumb he had a difficult time typing in the track listing. Well, it turned out to be a rockin little mix of fine-tunes and has earned its place as our summer compilation. Max was so proud of himself he wanted to share it with you. Beware pups; these songs might inspire fits of boisterous car singing or sporadic office dancing.

Rent Is Due (Brother Trucker Regulars)
Let It Ride (Ryan Adams & The Cardinals Cold Roses, Disc 2)

DIS NOTES:
Something happened a couple weeks ago and Id be remiss if I didnt put down a little memorial in words. KKFIs Official Rock-n-Roll Radio Show came to an end. It was a little hour-long radio show on Sunday afternoons that packed a powerhouse of great music. It was one thing I looked forward to weekly. At times the on-air banter got a little chatty but even more it was loaded with great local music and featured tunes by bands coming through town and some just all around great rock-n-roll. Not to mention the telephone interviews and in-studio performances. Kansas City culture took one step backwards by losing this show and Im truly a Sad Dog because of it. Thanks to Gary Cloud for keeping it alive so long. Cody Wyoming, Bill Roach Sundahl, Slimm, Jon Stubblefield, and ours truly Jauqui, were some great additions when they entered the studio to spin some tunes and talk about local music. Robert Moore, your job just got a little bit harder! Robert hosts another great local fr
ee-form radio show on KCUR (89.3FM) Saturdays 2-4pm called Sonic Spectrum. He often includes KC bands in his Playlist and is a man of impeccable taste in music. Tune in.

He is said to have been wandering the earth for nearly 400 years but has called Charlotte, NC home.

The Reverend Peytons Big Damn Band @ MIKES TAVERN
The name is deceiving. Its not the size of the band but the sound they produce. A three-piece comprised of acoustic slide guitar, washboard and downsized drum kit playing traditional roots blues with a voice in Reverend Peyton that is possessed by the saints of the south. Im digging what I hear on their Myspace page. Be sure to pay a visit to their site if you dig this sort of thing and make it down to Mikes for the show.

UPCOMING RELEASES:
June 20 Frank Black Fast Man Raider Man on Cooking Vinyl
At the suggestion of a friend I recently pulled out Franks 1994 gem Teenager of the Year. Its darn near a perfect record. With my re-born love of Frank Black and I was more than just a little thrilled to hear of his new release. I raced off to catch an early listening and found that there is a Myspace page built for exactly that. www.myspace.com/fastmanraiderman His upcoming release is a double disk with 27 songs and the three songs posted online introduce a mellower Frank Black at times sounding a bit like Van Morrison but brilliant Black just the same. Im an eager pup to snag this one. -di

JAQS NOTES:
Jaqs off to the great music festival to the West putting in some man hours working Wakarusa. The forecasted heat and storms for the weekend will be a doozy but hanging out with the Flaming Lips and Lucero doesnt sound half bad.

DIS NOTES:
The Pitch Music Awards 2006 ballot was released this week. Some great Kansas City talent has been nominated. Sad Dog was asked to sit on the nominating panel this year and Im happy to see some of our picks made the final ballot. In my travels Ive learned we have a great little scene here with some mighty talent. We dont have to tell you that talent alone doesnt often pay the bills. Its nice that some of these folks can get some recognition. Take some time and cast your vote. Theyve made it real easy by allowing online voting. www.pitch.com/musicawards/2006

RELEASES:
Jon Dee Graham Full (2006, Freedom Records)
Last Friday night I had the privilege of getting up close and personal for another stellar Jon Dee performance at Daveys Uptown. Back with a trio that consisted of John Chipman (drums) and Andrew Duplantis (bass and vocals), they let loose a set that was heavy on songs off of the new release Full. I was running late (shame on me) and entered the bar two songs into the set, just in time for the tune Something Wonderful. In a matter of seconds I was transported somewhere far from my hectic day. Jon Dee moved from rippin guitar solos to beautiful ballads that brought a tear to the eye and a lump in the throat. The mix of musicians onstage was the perfect recipe of raw talent and friendship that made for perfect timing, some hilarious banter and off the cuff storytelling. Jon Dee introduced Duplantis mentioning that he has played with Alejandro Escovedo, The Meat Puppets and currently Son Volt, jokingly jibbing that he must have hit a dry spell but retorting with a heartfelt he
is back where he belongs. I would have to agree, as the trio was a well-oiled and fine-tuned vehicle, comfortable and familiar yet refreshing and full of surprises. Jon Dees songwriting is real and raw and tells the tales the beautiful side of livin as well as the side that aint so pretty. Full is no exception offering up songs that inspire you drive 80mph in a 40, to songs that command you to slow way down and revel in the words. The musicians on the album are the cream of the Austin crop including Jon Dee Graham, Andrew Duplantis, John Chipman, Mike Hardwick, Bruce Hughes, Scrappy Jud Newcomb and Mike Stewart. Get It!!! -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
Raconteurs Broken Boy Soldiers (2006, V2 Records)
I find commercial radio seriously annoying, well, because I find radio commercials seriously annoying. For this reason I vehemently veer away from turning the radio dial and rely on KKFI, KCUR, I-tunes and CDs as outlets to acquire my music. And for this reason, and the fact that I dont have cable television, I had not heard of the big Raconteurs single Steady, As She Goes. Actually, I hadnt even heard of the Raconteurs until I happened upon while perusing through a Borders in Chicago. There at the counter was the disc with Jack Whites bloody face on the front. Immediately I picked it up and threw it in the cart, because I am a fan, it seems, of the Jack White thang! I was happy being a fan of the Meg and Jack duo, The White Stripes, but then he went and joined up with Loretta Lynn, producing one of my favorite albums of 2004, 5-time Grammy Nominated Van Leer Rose. Now, here it is, Meg has been temporarily kicked to the curb, Loretta is sitting at home polishing her Grammy an
d Jack has a new posse consisting of Brendan Benson, Jack Lawrence (Greenhorns) and Patrick Keeler (Greenhorns). So I threw Broken Boy Soldier into the old disc player and immediately began to question my desire for instant gratification, which lead to my hasty purchase. The saccharine radio pop sound of Steady left a sour taste in my mouth, and, well, it still does. But as easily as I rejected the song, I took command, held steady, moved to the seemingly Zeppelin inspired Broken Boy Soldier, and after that, it was smooth sailing. The album is fat with funk and groove, reeling harmonies and a couple tender little ballads in Together, one of my favorite tunes on the album, and Call It a Day. Where I was initially beginning to mistrust my musical instinct, I am now comfortable with my purchase, make a point to skip track one, and to be honest track two as well, and just roll with the highly enjoyable last eight tracks on the album.

Tune in next week to hear why I disagree with anyone who has expressed disappointment in the new Alejandro release, and, to explain what brought me to purchase the new Dixie Chicks album and why I have added it to my box of items to be re-gifted.

DIS NOTES:
Sorry pups, I have to be brief again this week as the keyboard is soon to be packed up as I finish this moving process tomorrow. First thing on my unpacking to-do list is to track down my CDs and pull out some of my summer favorites. No doubt that stack will include some Lauryn Hill, Old 97s, Thin Lizzy, The Thrills, a little Latin music and a little surf. But, I could use a good healthy fresh influx of good summer listenin. Anyone have some suggestions?
