Forrest Whitlow and the Pickles (10:30) @ PROSPEROS BOOKS
Straight from the horses mouth, Forrest and the Pickles are a bit of Americana, a bit of grunge, a bit of pop and a whole lot of energy. The players are Forrest Whitlow (vocals/guitar), John Bersuch (Bacon Shoe) on drums, DJ Clem (Wylde Chipmunk and the Cuddly-Poos) on lap steel, guitar and mandolin and Jeff Harshbarger on bass.
Cozy and intimate Prosperos sits on the NW corner of 39th and Bell, right in the heart of the 39th Street district. In addition to book lined walls, Prosperos now carries a fine selection of vinyl and discs. Yesterday, for the first time, I stopped in to check out their selection. I was on my lunch break so I walked in set on avoiding the urge to wander the isles of books, which took a heavy dose of willpower. Instead, I headed straight downstairs to the music section of the store and what they are now calling Little Red Rooster Records. (Guys, I really hope I got the name correct!) Without much time I went for instant gratification and hit the first display rack I could find. Minutes, later I walked out with the Clash (Combat Rock), Lucinda Williams (Live at the Fillmore), Johnny Cash (American lV: The Man Comes Around) and some local flavor with the Architects (Revenge). As you will discover later in my notes section, I have been searching for a new (at least new to me) loca
lly owned, mom and pop record store to lay my head, now that I dont have Recycled Sounds to turn to for my lazy Saturday afternoon escapes. With its welcoming and cozy atmosphere, and not to mention fantastic selection of discs, I might just have to bring my pillow this eve. So, grab a frosty beverage and a tasty meal at one of 39th Streets home grown eating establishments then get a heavy dose of the Pickles for dessert. -jaq

The Architects have just come off gigs on two Warp Tours, one in L.A. and one in Ventura, and are currently on the road with The Bronx in support of their most recent release Revenge. We couldnt ask for a better description of the new album than the one found on the Anodyne Records Website. Recorded in a scant four days, Revenge is a bakers-dozen kick square in the ass by the baddest cowboy boots youve ever seen. You can catch the boys early and still make that late show you have on your calendar.

THURSDAY, JULY 27
Carla Bozulich, Anni Rossi and Dead Science @ RECORD BAR
Back in the mid-90s Carla was with a band called The Geraldine Fibbers that released their debut record Lost Somewhere Between The Earth and My Home in 1995, undoubtedly my favorite record of that year and still one in my list of all-time favorites. It must have been some of the traditional country instruments that often had them labeled alt-country. Certainly punk-folk as they evidently hung onto punk roots more than the alt-country bands we hear today. Likely, they were simply one of those great rarities that come along and escape automatic filing into any one genre explaining the continuing omission from commercial important band lists and the reason so many have rarely heard of them. Carla is out touring in support of here recent release Evangalista. Its something entirely different than she was doing with The Geraldine Fibbers and honestly, Im not sure Im digging it. In the days of The Geraldine Fibbers I would have said, fans of Patti Smith, Excene Cervenkas (X) so
lo work and PJ Harvey shouldnt miss the show. And because she has one of my favorite female voices Ill go ahead and say it. But musically, the new experimental territory leaves me with heavy hesitation. At the very least go grab The Geraldine Fibbers first record. Youll never find me recommending a better one. -di

Jason Webley and Jeff Harmst @ THE BRICK
Eccentric artist Jason Webley, tours from his home in Seattle across the U.S. in his Toyota and only makes it to Kansas City about once a year. Hes a one-man outfit with four CDs to his name distributed by Springman Records. In that little Toyota of his he hauls guitar, accordion and a vodka bottle filled with coins from around the world to use for percussion. Hes shared the stage with The Faint, Dresden Dolls, Xiu Xiu, Andru Bemis and the Groovie Ghoulies, has performed world-wide and we understand puts on one spectacle of a show.

IN STORES NOW:
Golden Smog Another Fine Day (2006, Lost Highway Records)
Golden Smog has had its share of musicians drift in and out of the line-up over the years but has managed to hold onto core members Marc Perlman and Gary Louris (The Jayhawks), Dan Murphy (Soul Asylum), Kraig Johnson (Run Westy Run) and Jeff Tweedy (Uncle Tupelo/Wilco), a part-time member these days. All members hail from music Mecca Minneapolis, MN, except for Tweedy, who remains the geographic anomaly of the group, calling Chicago home. Another Fine Day is the first Golden Smog release in 8 years, and for those of you weary of what the new album has to offer, I recommend you dive in make the purchase. Barring a handful of tunes with a heavier pop sound, the majority of the album is strongly influenced by Louris and Perlman, incorporating melodic grooves and impeccable harmonies. But dont let me lead you to believe that this should be labeled as another Jayhawks album. What makes Golden Smog so unique is the collaboration of stellar of musicians all with varying musical back
grounds as well as the caliber of talent, songwriting and poetry they bring to the table. This is an album to kick back with, soaking up every lyric of every song. At select stores you receive a poster titled Smog Story with the purchase of the album. Smog Story is a family tree of all the members of Golden Smog and their perspective bands dating back to 1971. The list of bands is long and elite and includes Big Star, The Replacements, Soul Asylum, Uncle Tupelo, SonVolt, Wilco and The Jayhawks to name a few. At this time I still have not located the Smog Story poster but the research continues and I will prevail. Golden Smog currently has two shows scheduled, one at First Avenue (Minneapolis, MN) and one at the Bowery Ballroom (New York, NY). It is more than tempting to consider that road trip to MN and catch what should prove to be one amazing hometown show. -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
Needmore Discs Gets My Attention
I made a call to a local seller of compact discs today to see if the new Golden Smog had hit their racks. A lady answered the phone, and after brief pleasantries I asked, Do you have the new Golden Smog. She replied, obviously questioning the name, Golden Swan? No, I repeated, Golden Smog. She came back with, Hold on and let me check. It only took a second for her to return with her answer Yes, we do have the new Golden Smog (she now had the correct name) and it is $17.99. My heart sank a bit as I remembered the day when I would inquire about this alt-country super-group, and not only would the mention of the band lead to an extensive conversation about the current band members, but it would also lead t the purchase of a slew of albums due to the lineage of the members and the many projects which they were involved. Unfortunately, the phone call left me dry and generally unexcited to hop up and head to the chain down the road. Not to mention, I could stay put and purc
hase the same album online for $10.00. Now, I am not here to bash chain music stores, but the conversation had me wondering if I would ever again find that KC mom and pop store where the staff members become your friends and prices remain reasonable. I was just about to completely submit to the world of downloads and online purchasing when I called Needmore Discs in hopes that they might fill the void. Co-Owner Colleen Voeks answered the phone, and after some brief pleasantries I asked, Do you have the new Golden Smog? She replied, Let me see if we still have a copy in stock. She returned to the phone to let me know that they did have a copy and it was $13.99. We chatted about the new disc a bit, and although Needmore Discs did not carry the Smog Story poster, she gave me some ideas on where I might find it. Somehow we ended up discussing our dogs, dog parks and how Max, the ever happy sad dog, and I could stop by on our way back from Shawnee Mission Park as she always had a b
owl of fresh water and treats on hand. Hallelujah and praise the rock gods, I hit gold for the second time this week! I have seen the Needmore Discs name pop more and more recently as they are supporters of the local music seen presenting sponsors of what has now become a Kansas City Tradition, Slimms Boozeday Tuesday at Mikes Tavern. In the past I had not made a habit of frequenting Needmore Discs as their location at 11212 W. 75th Street was a bit out of the way for a midtown girl who had Recycled Sounds at her fingertips. But times are changing and I have been converted. I will no longer shun the drive west to Needmore Discs, as it looks like I have found with another local store I will soon call home.

Bloodshot Records artist Scott H. Biram is out in support of his hot-off the presses release Graveyard Shift. Were borrowing a descriptive little clip off the Bloodshot website because it is just too good not to. His live shows unleash a Lemmy-sized metal attitude, a stomping, pulsing John Lee Hooker-channeling, and cockeyed tales of black water baptisms and murder, all while romanticizing the on-the-road lifestyle.
Self-proclaimed Dirty Old One Man Band, KC Rockabilly and powerhouse rock makes up Mikes menu of R-N-R this eve. It should prove to be an eclectic and tasty trio of dishes.

Combined, the members of the current Gaslights line-up are up for three Pitch Music Awards: The Gaslights (Best Country Band), Abigail Henderson (Best Female Vocalist) and The Bad Ideas (Best New Band).
The Siderunners, from Chicago, share a label (Failed Experiment Records) with our friends The Safes. The band includes ex-members of The Vindictives, The Tossers and Pruno, they shell out some self-proclaimed ass kickin country and have released a new acoustic album Sabbath Country Sabbath

Neil Young recently released Living With War, an anti-Bush album dedicated to inspiring action in the apathetic to stand up and speak out against the current administration and its actions. In conjunction with the release of this album Neil is posting protest songs from established, as well as independent, artists on the e-newsletter page of his website called Living With War Today. Through the site he has been asking for submissions of protest songs for consideration. Artists featured on the site include Kris Kristofferson, Steve Earle, Jenny Yates anddrum roll please, KCs own Forrest Whitlow! It seems DJ Clem submitted three Forrest tunes and Cocktails and Machine Guns was chosen and posted on the site this week. Billy Brimblecom Benefit Update
A few weeks ago a Sad Dog friend asked us to add a listing for a benefit for Billy Brimblecom (Black Pool Lights) who has been battling Ewings Sarcoma, a form of bone cancer, which resulted in the amputation of his leg. The night featured live entertainment, as well as a silent auction, and all proceeds went to help with medical bills and towards the purchase of a prosthetic leg. I bumped into our friend Josh this weekend and received news that the benefit proved to be a huge success raising $20,000 in that evening alone. For those of you who came out for the evening, thank you for your support! As Josh says, This just goes to show the power of individual people coming together. The results can be HUGE! -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
On the Local Front:
Last night I found myself out much too late on a school night. It was my dear friend Wendes Birthday and the festivities took place at The Brick for Bill Roach Sundahls (Spice of Life Productions / Donkey Show / Crossroads Music Festival) Anything Goes Night. Every Wednesday Roach hosts this free open mic night. As it has been a weekly gig at The Brick for a couple of months now, it was my first time out in support. The dimly lit red hue of The Brick proved to be the perfect setting for the group of performers who came out to test their talent. It wasnt overly crowed but all seats were filled with folks ready and willing to take in a night of eclectic entertainment. Anything Goes Night proved to be a blast as evident by the fact that I entered the bar a little after 10pm, prepared to stay for one beverage, but didnt walk out until past 1am. This week featured comedians and singer/songwriters, all there to work out their sets in front of a live audience who proved to be e
ncouraging, and at times, a bit forgiving. Although the comedians received the usual dose of good-humored jabbing, Anything Goes Night has only one rule, This is not the Gong Show, therefore, hecklers are discouraged. It is an open forum and has proven to be a safe haven of sorts for artists of all varieties and experience to hop up on stage and show their stuff. I encourage lovers of live entertainment to check it out, as you will be wildly entertained. And, I most definitely encourage artists to sign up to perform as it is a great way to hone your craft, gain some stage experience, and most importantly, just have some fun doing what you love to do. If nothing else, you have the full attention of the founder and producer of Kansas Citys Premier Variety Show, The Donkey Show. Who knows, you may find yourself on the bill of one of KCs hottest variety events.
Every Wednesday (8:30pm to Midnight), Sign up starts at 7pm

DIS NOTES:
We caught wind of some good news this week. While Split Lip Rayfields Kirk Rundstrom continues his battle with cancer it seems he is feeling well enough for a few shows here in the area. He and the boys will be back within the walls of Daveys Uptown on Thursday, August 17th. Check out their killer new website at www.splitliprayfield.com for other dates and locations and pick up their latest CD release Live at the Bluebird Denver, CO while youre there. Our well wishes continue to go out to Kirk and we are ready to welcome him back to a stage once again - where he belongs.

8:30pm; $12 advance / $14 dos
Out in support of his recent release Whiskey or God (Palo Duro Records, March 2006) (also called Heeah in its European release), Hank III calls him the savior of traditional country music, Willie Nelson says, Im one of Dales biggest fans. In wider circles hes called, a honky-tonk purist, and a leading country light and from there the awards, the artists that have recorded his songs and the soundtracks hes been included on become a wide expanse. A documentary about Watson, Crazy Again, was premiered at this years SXSW film festival. Director Zalman King is also directing Watson in a full-length feature called Austin Angel filming now.

Well, truth be told, we dont really know the exact location of this show. Its listed on the Doris Henson Myspace page and a little bird has mentioned it might be happening near YJs (128 18th Street). It might take a bit of searching but there is plenty to see on a First Friday at the Crossroads.

The Meat Purveyors, Dually Jukes and Pickin Trix @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
Well their label (Bloodshot Records) lists the release date as July 18th but the bands website lists the release date as July 5th. So, if youre a lucky fan youll be able to pick up their fourth all electric - release Someday Soon Things Will Be Much Worse at the show. Whether whiskey fueled or the result of great musical kinship youll catch some of the liveliest and wittiest stage banter that often times over powers their hybrid of punk badass bluegrass and always evokes gut wrenching laughter. As their website rightly endorses them: Bigmouth, Smartass Drunks from Austin, Tx.

Tonight, they are joined by Hells Belles (all female AC/DC tribute band) and the Seattle punk sounds of Neutral Boys. Visit the Hells Belles website for some video footage of the ladies in action. TUESDAY, JULY 11
Needmore Discs presents:
Boozeday Tuesday Matinee @ MIKES TAVERN
Featuring: Honky and Crazy Talk
Honky features J.D. Pinkus of The Butthole Surfers but dont expect the same sound when these dirty boys from Austin, TX hit the stage. We keep telling you about them each time Kansas City gets lucky enough to host these Southern-fried rockers. This is an early show but dont expect anything kind and gentle here. They are road warriors having recently toured with Nashville Pussy. Out supporting their newest release Balls Out Inn (Small Stone Records), KC all-about-the-fun-time-rockers Crazy Town supports Honky in the opening slot. Ive been digging on Crazy Town for months from the small selection of tunes ringing steady on their Myspace page. Im there to finally catch em! -di

Little Rachel and Double Clutch Band @ KNUCKLEHEADS
8pm, No Cover
Last Thursday night we left you early to head out to Knuckleheads and catch The Blasters. The opening act was the Austin trio Two Timin Three and sitting in with them on a couple of tunes was Little Rachel. This little lady is spunky, and looking like a Rockabilly Queen, belted out her 1950s style rock n rhythm and blues. Sweet as sugar and spicy as cayenne, her voice hushed the crowd and all heads turned faced the stage. The weather is ripe for a night on the newly renovated Knuckleheads patio and Little Rachel will be in the house woo-in and rock-in.

JAQS NOTES:
Pups, my creative juices have run a bit dry this week and time has run out on trying to tap a new well. Have a great weekend!

DIS NOTES:
Back when my favorite music was called underground there was a band that topped the heap for me. They were called the Meat Puppets. I believed they would remain unknown until Kurt Cobain, joined by Curt, covered several of their songs in 1994 on MTVs Unplugged. And sure enough, later that year I was living in Buffalo, New York and heard their song Backwater come over the airwaves. While usually the recognition of a band I loved so dearly would disturb me, as I now had to share them with the masses (boy how some things have changed), there was something more deserving of a sound that was so unique. Since Sad Dog has joined this environment known as MySpace weve done the virtual friends hook-up with many bands and other folks and now get these lovely, and sometimes disturbing, things called Bulletins. Well this week a good one landed upon our internet doorstep from the Meat Puppets announcing that Curt Kirkwood was out on a solo tour. Sadly, hes not playing in our real life
neck of the woods. But, for readers in the lucky neighborhoods of the world (closest being Minneapolis and Chicago) be sure to check him out as hes bringing his son Elmo Kirkwood on tour with him.wow! does that make me feel old. Quoted from www.myspace.com/curtkirkwood : On SNOW (2005), (Curt) Kirkwood has teamed with multi-Grammy Award-winning producer/guitarist Pete Anderson (Dwight Yoakam, Roy Orbison, Lucinda Williams, Michelle Shocked and Thelonious Monster, among others). Melding rock, pop, folk, blues and, even, jazz influences, SNOW proves that talent supercedes all musical genres. Being a "contradiction in terms" obviously works for Curt.
