WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6
The Paybacks, Charleyhorse and Federation of Horsepower @ MIKES TAVERN
There are live shows on the Sad Dog calendar that we wait for in great anticipation. The Paybacks heading back to KC definitely lives at the top. Hailing from the Motor City, this crew knows the meaning of straight on rock and roll and will leave you beggin for more. Front woman and guitarist Wendy Case sits in my mind with some of the baddest and most empowering women in rock, Chrissy Hynde and Joan Jett in company. Add Dan Mehtric on screamin guitar, Bill Hafer bangin the skins and John Szymanski on bass and all thats left is you at the end of the show dripping in sweat and wondering when you will get your next fix. I first saw The Paybacks a few years back, was hooked at first note. I bought their first album Knock Loud which is still on the top of my list of albums I reach for when I want it hard and loud. With any great recording it leaves you wanting more and more and more and I finally got the love with their second and equally addicting second release Harder and Hard
er. Back out on the road for at least 25 confirmed dates, The Paybacks are givin up more of the goods and introducing songs off of a new album, Love Not Reason, slated for release in November.
Oh, but thats not all pups! There is a big hellraisin heap of icing on the cake as you get the pleasure of experiencing that which is the balls out rock of KCs own Federation of Horsepower. And, oh, were not finished yet. Charley Horse, featuring members of The Cramps, Throw Rag, and The Hunns, are on board as well.
So make plans to call in sick Thursday morn as you wont want to miss a second of what this night has in store. -jaq

Bob Dylan Modern Times (Columbia Records, 2006)
Dylans 31st studio album and first in 5 years is in stores now and getting rave reviews Rolling Stone Magazine giving it a 5 star rating and calling it a masterwork.
Dylan fansthe album is dirty blues and honky-tonk, conjuring up images of the troubadour travelin the country through the ages in a dusty old bus, playin smoke filled bars, tellin his tales then movin on down the road. And with Dylan as storyteller and his road band backing him up, Modern Times makes me want to pull an all-nighter with some good friends. This album is seen as the third release in a trilogy which includes Time Out of Mind and Love and Theft. -jaq

DIS NOTES:
We all go through times when we are busy but the last couple weeks have been ridiculous for me. So, when I arrived home last night and found Netflix made a delivery I was more than a little happy to see it was a music documentary. Im a sucker for em. Yes, I miss VH1s Behind the Music. In fact there is little I like more than a documentary or biography about the creative arts. I dont even care if I like the music. Its intriguing for me when the story unfolds and the artists succinctly explain the motivation and where their art comes from. I was especially pleased last night while watching Kill Your Idols released this week on DVD. The film focuses on the no wave era and the bands behind this little known movement of 70s and early 80s New York City. In line with punk rock ethos, these bands went one-step further abandoning music derived from blues, to create music that referenced nothing else. While using traditional rock-n-roll instruments many didnt even consider what t
hey did music or entertainment. Rather releasing short, brief outbursts of anti-music. The film begins with interviews with the genres originators, Teenage Jesus & The Jerks, Suicide, Theoretical Girls, and Swan, followed by interviews with Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth who was significantly influenced by no wave. Interviews with newer artists, considering themselves inline with this earlier movement follows. Already informative the film becomes incredibly interesting when these earlier artists and the idols of many current day bands unleash their contempt for these artists of today and their lack of originality. Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Black Dice and Liar are just a few that take a cinematic tongue lashing. I didnt dig the music featured but if you are a fan of music history its worth checking out.

Dis Notes Part Deux:
There are a few things in life Im very grateful for, in no particular order and foregoing the expected health and my peeps. Life would just not be cool for me without music, books, critters, Jamison Irish Whiskey and The Paybacks. I know we dont usually double team pimping a show but I was feeling a little nauseated as I was about to release the Sad Dog email without expressing how very, very, very cool this band is. So instead of calling up Jaq and battling over all the reasons I should get to write about them and not her you are getting double encouragement tonight and heavy prodding to not miss this show. Their music somehow fits every mood and I never get too far without some Paybacks within easy reach. So there it is. Sure, its a week night but if you choose just a few nights a year to get out during the week make this one a priority! Truly a band where the music speaks for itself.

The Gaslights w/ Matt Grimm & The Red Smear @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
Yep, they hit a moose. Weve seen the photos to prove it. Earlier this month The Gaslights were on their way home from a tour to the West when they hit a moose in Montana, killing it and their van. Ms. Abigail kept that big ole boat of a van on the road and The Gaslights made it home, a bit shaken, in a different van, but in one piece. Heres hoping they make it to the Daveys stage from their respective homes avoiding large mammals.

Overstep and Giants Chair @ RECORD BAR
Tonight is a reunion of sorts for KCs Overstep. Loaded with talent, the band is made up of veteran KC musicians Adam Stotts (Lucky Graves / Golden Hearted Whores), Ben Ruth (Lucky Graves / Golden Hearted Whores / Grand Marquis), Duane Trower (Doris Henson / Season to Risk) and Alex Organ (Sirhan Sirhan). In the eyes of the boys of Overstep they never really broke up. However, Alex Organ moved to CA back in 2003, which has obviously limited their ability to play live. Organ, who was recently diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, has refused to call it quits and has been undergoing treatment allowing him to steady his hands and pick up the sticks again. With Organ back in KC for a visit, Overstep is taking the opportunity tonight to shell out a much overdue reunion show. Prior to their hiatus, Overstep put out two full-length albums on Anodyne Records Do You Copy? and The Bullring By the Sea, showcasing their hard edge indie rock sound. Prior to Organs departure Overstep recorde
d seven new songs, which will be available on disc at the show.

A consummate musician and always noted as a Sad Dog fav, we are lucky to have him back in KC so soon after his last visit. Although Jon Dees band members tend to change, we expect he will be back with seasoned Austin musicians John Chipman on drums and Andrew Duplantis on bass.
Chipman can be found sharing the stage with Jon Dee in another Austin band to be given notice, The Resentments. Duplantis has played with Alejandro Escovedo and The Meat Puppets. ODeath, Skeleton Breath, Mark Smeltzer and Amy Farrand @ RECORD BAR
We spend a great deal of time here at Sad Dog HQ perusing MySpace pages getting to know bands that are coming through town. Every once in a while I come across one that I totally dig, add to my Favorites, cant wait to see and make a point to add em to my cd collection. Such is the case with gothic, gypsy punks ODeath. The closest reference I can make to them is the Chickasaw Mud Puppies, albeit ODeath is a tad darker , but the Mud Puppies havent been around for awhile so that probably does you no good. At the very least pay a visit to their MySpace for a listenand then well see you at the show.

Leonard Cohen: Im Your Man @ TIVOLI THEATER
Songwriter. Poet. Counter-Culture Icon. Consummate Ladies Man
I was first introduced to Leonard Cohen in 1994 when his songs were featured in the film Natural Born Killers. From that point on I was hooked. This film tells the life story of this poet / singer / songwriter who writes hauntingly beautiful songs delivering them with dark confidence and spirituality. He has influenced many a musical icon from Judy Collins to Bono. I stumbled upon a live interview with Collins at SXSW this year where she told the story of how she became a fan of his music in the late 60s, recorded Suzanne and Dress Rehearsal and actually convinced Cohen to record his own music. Bless you Judy. The film includes interviews and performances by Bono, Martha Wainwright, U2, Linda Thompson, Leonard Cohen himself and many more. -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
2nd Annual Crossroads Music Festival
Presented by Time Warner and Spice of Life Productions, this homegrown festival is the brainchild of Bill Roach Sundahl, founder of KCs own variety show The Donkey Show and avid supporter of local music. Celebrating all that is Kansas City, Crossroads Music Festival (CMF2) will take place September 9, 2006 from 3p.m. to Midnight at Grinders Sculpture Park, 18th and Locust. Set in the heart of the Crossroads District, Downtown Kansas City, CMF2 is a family affair offering live music by 13 local bands on 2 stages, kids games, local vendors, food and beverage and much more. Bands who have joined the CMF2 family this year include The Wilders, Roman Numerals, The Gaslights, The Architects, Doris Henson , Its Over, The Von Hodads, Down Trunks, Wylde Chipmonks and the Cuddly Poos, Mr. Marcos V7, Zee Grass, Emma Feel and The Silvermen. Musical genres include rock, new wave, Americana, bluegrass, rockabilly, pop, surf rock and more. There is fun for kids of all ages as you are never too
old or too young to rock! Tickets are available through the Central Ticket Office by calling 816-235-6222, online at www.spiceoflifeproductions.com and at Grinders, Birdies, Lillibelle and Needmore Discs. Tickets are $9 online, $10 at all other advance outlets and $13 Day of Show. Children under 12 get in free. Free parking is available between 17th and 18th streets on Oak and chairs and blankets are allowed.
I think the best testimonial from the 2005 Crossroads Festival was from my 3 year old nephew who had the opportunity to go to the circus before he hit the fest. After rockin out to Pendergast and Its Over the tired little guy made one statement before dozing off in the car, This was more fun than the circus. CMF2 packs a ton of bang for the buck and is the perfect opportunity to have a fantastic Saturday while supporting live music!
You will hear more about this Sad Dog supported event in weeks leading up to the big show. Get your tickets now because this is one KC event not to be missed.

DIS NOTES:
Im not sure what my problem is with Jack White. Its a relationship Im still trying to come to terms with. The commercial radio darlings that they were, the White Stripes, are a band I avoided for a long time. Then Jack hooked up with Loretta Lynn producing one of my favorite records of 2004 Van Lear Rose. Much prodding from friends and Jaqs review of The Raconteurs Broken Boy Soldiers (Sad Dog June 2, 2006) prompted me to pick it up last week at Needmore Discs. My relationship with Jack is moving along quite nicely at this point and I too recommend it for a listen. This is just one of the great discs I picked up at Needmore Discs last week what a killer record store. I was a long time fan of Recycled Sounds but with its demise I will be finding my way to Needmore Discs often. The past few months, what I havent been able to pick up at shows, Ive ordered online, downloaded, and yes, burned discs <shoot me now>, and its just not the same. This dog is finally out of her mi
sery. There is something to be said for flipping through those bins of CDs, some used, some new. You just gotta hear something playing over the speakers while youre shopping music. The bargain prices (significantly lower than other area stores), friendly staff and the chatter of fellow shoppers is something Ive missed. Major kudos for having a face-out rack fully filled with local area musicians and bands. Other gems this trip include P.W. Long Remembered, Michael Penn Resigned, Robyn Hitchcock Eye and Neko Case Fox Confessor Brings The Flood.

The Lucky Graves, Blue Leaves, Softee, and Alice @ THE BRICK
Ive yet to hear the first full length recent release by The Lucky Graves as I was a bit wore out from my weekend in Chicago to catch their recent release show at Record Bar. But, Ive sure been digging on the songs up on their MySpace page. Theres definite indie leaning, but the underlying blues groove gives it something a bit different. Check it out. -di

The Embarrassment and Kill Creek @ Liberty Hall
Known to fans simply as The Embos this legendary Wichita band comes from a time in the early 80s before indie rock when they might have been called art punk but often referring to themselves as blister pop. They are doing a couple reunion shows this weekend the closest being in Lawrence on Sunday night at Liberty Hall. Another area band, Kill Creek, you arent likely to see all too often will also be reforming to share the stage for what promises to be a nostalgic night for many.

Roots Rock Reggae Festival @ LIBERTY MEMORIAL
Featuring Ziggy Marley, Stephen Marley, Bunny Wailer and Ozomatli.
Show starts at 1p.m.
When you see the name Marley you know youre going to get a heavy hit of right on reggae. But what really perks my ears is the mention of Ozomatli. I had the pleasure of working a couple of festivals over the years that had Ozo on the bill. I have to tell youthis is a group to catch live. Mixing latin with hip hop (LA Afro Latin) and incorporating guitar, drums, turntable, bass and a horn section complete with sax, clarinet, trombone, percussion and trumpet, Ozo is pure high energy entertainment. This group cant help but get you moving and at every show they head out into the audience, instruments in tow, for a parade of sound. If you find yourself looking for something to do on this lazy Sunday I encourage you to join the Ozomatli party. -jaq

THURSDAY, AUGUST 24
Billy Joe Shaver @ KNUCKLEHEADS
$20 adv / $25 dos
One of the greatest shows I have ever seen was Billy Joe Shaver and his band at Daveys Uptown in December 2004. One of my greatest possessions is a signed copy of his biography Honky Tonk Hero. Not that Im a big collector of signed items it just meant I got to spend a few moments in close proximity to one of the greatest songwriters of our time. Well.except there was that time I was moved to hug him after his show. There are many times when Billy Joe makes his way into a conversation about music. Often times I find people unfamiliar with his name. Recognition comes when you list a few song titles and the long list of artists that have recorded his songs including Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, George Jones, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Patty Loveless, Tom T. Hall, the Allman Brother, the Oakridge Boys, and Bobby Bare Sr. In 1973, Waylon Jennings recorded Honky Tonk Heros an album of Billy Joes songs which became the bellwether for outlaw count
ry music. His life is a tragic one having been abandoned by his father before he was born, the loss of his wife, son and mother all within the same year, bouts with alcohol and drugs and losing two fingers and part of a third in a sawmill accidentneedless to say, he doesnt lack for lyrical subject matter. Despite all that its his passion for women and life where his true poetry shines. Not to mention he does some great story telling from the stage between songs that will have you laughing and smiling.
Finally given some due recognition, in 2002 he won the Americana Music Awards Lifetime Achievement Award. Only to be followed by one of the poorest documentary productions Ive ever seen of which he is the focal point. No matter, you have a chance to see a living legend at Knuckleheads tonight. -di

JAQS NOTES:
The Meat Purveyors: Self-proclaimed Bigmouth smartass drunks from Austin, TX.
I found out recently that for reasons unknown to this Sad Dog, The Meat Purveyors have decided to call it quits. Their decision for demise does not come as a complete shock as they tried the breakup back in 2000, but like any dysfunctional love affair, had to give it one more go. It is always sad to see one of your reliable ol favorite live bands break apart, but with break-ups come new projects, new music and new experiences down the road. The players are Bill Anderson (Guitar), Jo Walston (Beltin out the tunes), Cherilyn DiMond (Saucy Stand-Up Bass), and Peter Stiles (Mandolin). For years this quartet has been shellin out their bluegrass gone bad style on and off the stage, always on board to entertain, and hopefully, shock us just a bit. With five full-length albums, a hit on many a compilation and a few crazy Madonna covers TMP is leaving us with some hell-raisin tunes to remember them by.
They are scheduled to play Friday, August 18th at the outdoor stage of the Replay Lounge, Lawrence, KS (9pm) and Saturday, August 20 at the Record Bar in KC all part of the North vs. South Music Festival. Take advantage of these shows pups as this will be the last chance to see TMP.

DIS NOTES:
Well I had a first on Sunday night. I was actually guilt-ed out of bed to catch a show. The crux of the guilt.disappointing Sad Dog readers. Yep, Im sure that one was created with the help of a couple whiskey drinks. But alas, its true. Sunday night, after taking in a great, but mellow, Slaid Cleaves show I headed home in the hopes of getting some much needed sleep. About midnight my phone rings with my dear pal Cody Wyoming on the other end. He unleashed a doozy of a guilt trip asking where the hell I was, why I would be about to miss the mighty Morning 40 Federation and insisting I would disappoint Sad Dog readers if I didnt come down. Uh huh. But alas, this is the story you get this week. My repeated response that I was fully pajamad and well on my way to dreamland went ignored. Sometimes the only way to fix a guilt trip is to give into. So I threw back the covers, jumped out of bed, threw on my clothes, pulled the hair back and made my way to Fred P. Otts to catch the Morn
ing 40 Federation. Mighty they were. Shortly after arriving I was asked for my hair tie to remedy a problem with the saxophone and once accomplished they were well on the way to sending the healthy sized Sunday night crowd into a dancing fury. There were some long time fans at the show singing along to their funk-i-fied blues-rock sound. They reminded me of John Spencer Blues Explosion with a shot of Billy Goat, however this band remained fully clothed through out their set. The small alcove at P. Otts didnt intimidate this six man band as one horn player perched himself on the stairway landing while the rest remained floor level going head to head with the high energy crowd. Sunday nights at P. Otts, proving once again that it is often the best night to catch a show.

Golden Hearted Whores and Morning 40 Federation @ FRED P. OTTS
The Whores have been somewhat rare lately but heres your 2nd chance this weekend to catch these rock-n-roll bad boys in action.
A friend recently tried to describe Morning 40 Federation to me. He described this New Orleans group like this, a bizarre mix of Dixieland, rock, soul, and jazz stirred up with a WHOLE bunch of booze. Kinda like Tom Waits meets Fishbone, meets Dr. John, and thats not really very accurate. Basicallyhard to describe. They used to play in KC pretty frequently and built a healthy fan base. But its been awhile. Hmmmmight have to try and catch this one after Slaid Cleaves of course. di

Slaid Cleaves @ KNUCKLEHEADS SALOON
A few years back, on a road trip, I was heading into the KC area and caught a story on NPR about Slaid. This was my first introduction and it was love at first listen. If you visit his website the first words to catch your eye say Slaid Cleaves. Grew up in Maine. Lives in Texas. Writes songs. Makes records. Tries to be good. That pretty much sums it up. This singer-songwriter definitely has that country edge but it must be that northern upbringing that doesnt let his music venture to far into the woods. He seems to enjoy both sides of the Mason Dixon line as he can sing about eatin fresh Maine lobster and swimmin in Barton Springs (Austin, TX) in the same song. Ive seen him perform live only once when he experienced sound malfunctions leaving him without a microphone. Without a step he moved to the front of the stage, asked everyone to quiet down, and belted it out, truly unplugged. Slaid is the real deal and I cant think of a better venue than outside at Knuckleheads to see
him perform. Thanks Frank! The ladies of Sad Dog have tickets in hand and are counting the minutes till show time. -jaq

George Jones @ THE MISSOURI STATE FAIR (Sedalia, MO)
I have to thank Lynn G and her, always informative, KC Rockabilly E-Newsletter for giving me the heads up on this one. When I was a kid my dad would take me to the MO State Fair every year. We ate too many corn dogs, rode too many rides and watched many a car race...it was always a blast and would definitely be worth the drive to catch country legend George Jones. Split Lip Rayfield w/ Drakkar Sauna @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
$15 DOS / $12 Advance; 8:30pm; 21+
We couldnt believe it when we heard it. Split Lip Rayfield would be coming to Daveys. As you know Split Lip Rayfields guitarist Kirk Rundstrom has been battling esophageal cancer for the past six months or so. That chemo is some mean stuff and often times taking a greater toll on the body than the illness it fights. But, Kirk has been feeling well, exercising, practicing with the boys and wanted to get back up on the stagerightfully so, its where he belongs. Theres not a better way to spend your money this week. You will get one hell of a show. Often hailed as bluegrass, that never quite sits well with me. Sure they play traditional bluegrass instruments but the essence of their punk and metal backgrounds has a mighty clutch on their sound. And as a bonus, Wayne Gottstine (Mandolin), long time Split Lip member who parted ways with the band last year, is slated to join Kirk, Jeff and Eric at a few of their scheduled shows.
You can also purchase CDs from Kirks other band Grain & Demise online at www.grainanddemise.com. All money from Grain and Demise CD sales assist with Kirks medical bills and help to support his family including two young girls. -di

HEADS UP:
Alejandro Escovedo Orchestra @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
Friday, August 18th 10pm; $20.00
Time for another big heads up as one of SAD DOGs all time favs makes his way to the Daveys stage next weekend, Friday August 18th. Get your tickets now as his shows often sell out. Alejandro was named artist of the decade in 1999 by No Depression Magazine, last month he shared the cover of No Depression with Jon Dee Graham also coming to Daveys on August 26th. Al recently battled a near fatal bout with Hepatitis C but hes back as we knew he would be. He is a great artist and composer without parallel, and has shared the stage with artists such as Los Lobos, Wilco, Calexico, and John Cale who produced his latest release The Boxing Mirror (May 2006, Back Porch Records). This time through hes bringing his orchestra. Als previous bands include The True Believers, Buick MacKain, Rank and File, and The Nuns. This one is not to be missed!

JAQS NOTES:
ALERT LUCERO FANS!
Being a loyal Lucero fan, I subscribed to their email list so that I can keep up with the boys and whats up in Lucero news. This week I was hit with a bonus update. Their new album Rebels, Rogues & Swords is scheduled for release September 26th. Being the kind souls they are, and apparently backed by someone who knows a bit about promotion, they sent out a notice for pre-ordering. By heading to their website you can pre-order the album and the CD will be shipped to you one week prior to the release date; for an additional fee you can get their new limited edition Rebels, Rogues & Swords t-shirt and an exclusive 3 pin set (I am a sucker for band merch); and, this is the kicker, an immediate digital download of the album sent to you within 2-4 days of your order! Today I received an email with a link to download the album saying, this is being sent to you because you were kind enough to purchase the physical CD from Luceros web store. They also kindly ask that I limit this t
o my personal use. And being that they were kind enough to share this advance download for my listening pleasure, I feel I must oblige them. I would like to share my thought on this new release with you all, and will in the very near future, but I am currently in the process of the download and need to spend some quality time with the tunes before I can share my thoughts. What can share is that Lucero knows what I like and keeps shellin out their dirty country punk influenced rock. There hasnt been a Lucero album that didnt immediately rule the CD player or a Ben Nichols lyric that didnt have me singing along in high volume. For now you can visit www.luceromusic.com to preview 4 tracks from the new album or make a purchase and get the download yourself. And the best news of all, with a new album comes a new tour and new dates for November and December will soon be announced. You can also visit http://www.airamerica.com/maddow/ for an archive interview and acoustic song perfor
mance from the Rachel Maddow Show, August 4 at Air America Studios. Enjoy!

DIS NOTES:
Short and sweet this week. Im getting out of this heat and hitting the movies tonight. I need to get my scare on and it looks like The Descent is just the ticket. On my trip to Chicago last weekend I picked up a fun read in Chuck Klostermans Killing Yourself to Live: 85% A True Story. Its an expansion on an article he wrote for Spin Magazine about his cross-country journey to visit America's most famous rock-n-roll death sites. Ive been a long time fan of this rock journalist first in his book Fargo Rock City: A Heavy Metal Odyssey in Rural North Dakota, and then by the hugely entertaining Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs: A Low Culture Manifesto. It is sometimes eerie how closely his perspective on culture and his taste match mine but its exactly that that makes him such a fun read for me. Hes a regular contributor to Spin Magazine and its often those pages I turn to first. His first stop in Killing Yourself is to the Chelsea Hotel where he meets a frustrated G.M. who in
sists that his hotel not be aligned with the death of Nancy Spungen. It was after all, her boyfriend, Sid Vicious that was the accused. Thats about as far as Ive gotten in his journey because he spends the first chapter discussing how to choose music for a road trip (he ends up packing 600 CDs) and pondering his relationships with two women and admits theres even a third who well meet later in the bookit is a true road trip book. It doesnt just capture the highlights but gives you the dirty stuff tothose things that you think about on the open road on the way to the next pit stop.

THANK YOU to Jason Harper (Music Editor, The Pitch) for unknowingly providing us with our subject line this week. Good luck with the big show tomorrow night!

FRIDAY, AUGUST 4
The Hearers and Drakkar Sauna @ RECORD BAR
2 Shows! 7pm all ages, 10pm 21+
Just off of their west coast tour we are pleased to find this group of nine multi-talented musicians all in the same town. With the boys now scattered from KC to California, it is a rare treat to catch a Hearers show these days. Incorporating acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin, harmonica, pedal steel, organ, glockenspiel, cello, banjo, drums and synthesizer their sound ranges from the softest country/folk infused ballads to a much heavier indie rock, yet always surprising us with their eclectic and experimental side roads. Mark Tweed and Darrin Welch trade off lead vocals and harmonies complimenting each other, Tweed with a deep dark vocal quality while Welch provides a much lighter Americana edge. Drawing comparisons to The Hearers is a difficult task as they have truly carved out a musical niche all their own.
They released their second full-length album in 2005 on Anodyne Records, Dont Make the Captain Cry which I have dedicated some time over the last week. What began as a goal to spend time with this album became a love affair, as I now need a little fix to get me through the day. Recorded and mixed by Hearers member David Moore, this second release turned out to be one beautiful piece of work and should be a fixture in any music lovers collection. I cant wait to see you tomorrow!!! -jaq

Bloodshot Bill was just added to the bill this week! What a treat for those of you that cant make it to his show at this weeks Boozeday Tuesday. This one man attack only comes through about once a year and hes not to be missed. The bill was already a healthy one with alt.country darlings the Last Call Girls serving up their best from the female perspective and western surf outfit The Von Hodads but with Bloodshot Bill added to the mix its our pick for Saturday night.

The Lucky Graves CD Release Show!
A few weeks ago I caught The Lucky Graves at the Donkey Show and they rocked my socks off! Another KC gem! This is what I had to say, They describe their music as indie, rock and blues but its much more than that. There are definitely songs that ride heavy on the indie tracks, but they also have a smooth pop n soulful sexy sound as well. As most of you know by now, I love the sexy side of rock! THURSDAY, AUGUST 10
Doris Henson and Cataract Camp @ THE BRICK
Doris Henson is one KC band not to be missed in my book. It seems I am not alone as they are nominated for the Pitch Music Awards categories Best Live Act, Best Male Vocalist (Matt Dunehoo) and Best Rock/Pop Act. And, if there a category existed for Best Album (why isnt there a Best Album category?), their 2005 release Give Me All Your Money would hold a solid seat.
Cataract Camp hails from Charlottesville, VA and hits KC with their mix of Shoegazing, Latin and Ska. Ok, I had to look up Shoegazing as well. Heres what I pulled from Wikipedia. Shoegazing is characterized by a self-deprecating, introspective, non-confrontational feel. Generally employed are distortion and the fuzzbox, droning riffs and a Phil Spector-esque wall of sound from the noisy guitars. Shoegazers vocals are typically subdued in volume and tone. The Velvet Underground, The Jesus and Mary Chain and the Cocteau Twins have been cited as genre influences. There you go pups, your lesson for today is over. Lets break for recess!! -jaq

Pups, I am off to practice what I preach and catch as many bands as possible at the Pitch Music Awards Showcase. Once again, CONGRATULATIONS to all of our Sad Dog friends who were nominated. Dont Forget to Vote!! Tonight is the last night, so head to Westport for the Showcase or vote online at www.pitch.com/musicawards/2006.

DIS NOTES:
Last night I headed to Daveys Uptown to take in the semi-regular Wednesday night gig dubbed The Living Room. If you have friends that are musicians youve likely found yourself in a living room late at night when acoustic instruments are picked up and singing ensues. Fashioned after such evenings The Living Room at Daveys Uptown gives local songwriters a low key opportunity to play old favorites and new songs in a public forum. This week Tony Ladesich (Pendergast), Gene Smith, Jon Stubblefield (Bad Ideas, The Gaslights) and Chad Rex traded off spots on the small stage at Daveys. Check it out for a great night of entertainment by some of KCs best. There will be a varying cast of characters each week and if you have some songs to share Im sure these generous folks will clear the way to the stage.
