Sad Dog MySpace Profile Song of the Week: Postcarded by Chad Rex
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 29
Golden Hearted Whores, Crazy Talk and Dave Chilidog Crawford @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
A rare treat tonight as Dave Chilidog Crawford kicks off the night with his comedic songwriting genius. Get here early and hear him play such ditties as Chunky Belinda, Be My Valentine (Pabst Blue Ribbon), and Weekend Lesbians. I always hope Chilidog wont leave the stage, its that entertaining, but when he does get ready for some bad boy rock-n-roll with Crazy Talk and the Whores. -di

The Afterparty, Cat Scientist, and Its Over @ THE BRICK
Its a great week for some of Kansas Citys best local music. The Afterparty have taken indie and Americana influences and turned it into something special to be heard. This pack heads South next week for an 8 day tour. Sad Dog readers below the Mason-Dixon - be sure to check their tour dates and locations and get out and see something astounding out of Kansas City. Crowd pleasers, Its Over is what everyone is talking about these days, their brand of pop rock is intoxicating and youll be glad you caught their show.

The Downtrunks, The Gardes, and Choosey Beggars @ MIKES TAVERN
The Downtrunks, now heres another band crowding the Kansas City stages tonight that make it hard to choose just one to go see. Often ringing out in classic rock fashion they embrace some alt.country elements making them a hard one to consistently label. Head to cdbaby.com to get your hands on their 2006 release, Three Rings and a Dagger, which showcases their blend of rock, county, blues and jazz. A good choice if you find yourself at Mikes tonight.

CD Release Gravity Works, Fire Burns (Mars Motors)
You can easily call Chad Rex one of KCs premier songwriters. Staying true to his alt-county style, this sophomore release by Chad Rex and the Victorstands lives up to the high standards of the freshman album Songs to Fix Angels.
Awhile back I headed out to independent bookstore Prosperos to catch Forrest Whitlow. With the band set up against the book-lined walls and shelves, this small venue provides a quaint and cozy backdrop to take in the sounds of local flavor. BYOB or BYOCoffee.

Calexico @ Oakley Hall (Lawrence, KS)
I have been waiting for over a year for Calexico to roll through our neck of the woods.
Sometimes referred to as the indie mariachi band, Calexico mixes strings and brass with the pedal steel drawing from rock, jazz, mariachi, country and the swagger of the Old West to round out their sound. Out with a new full length album Garden of Ruin and an iTunes Live Session EP, this show is well worth makin the Saturday night drive to Lawrence. -jaq

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1
Dark Circles and the Golden Hearted Whores @ FRED P. OTTS
Self-proclaimed scumbags, the Whores are in fact that kind of dirty boy rock-n-roll that makes girls crazy. If you need a 2nd helping after Friday nights show the P. Otts stage is a great place to get a bit more intimate with their element of raunch. The Dark Circles dark pop will appeal to indie and 80s UK fans alike.

This singer/songwriter night is for the novice musician cutting their chops and the veteran wanting to test out some new tunes. All you need to get cozy in the Living Room is a guitar and a good lovin attitude. Last Tuesday we heard the premiere of the new sound system ringing clear on the small stage and yes, it something to talk about. It sounds great and now you cant find a better room to showcase KC talent.

Slim Francis and Gene Smith @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
9pm; $4
Earlier this week I was included in a group email, sent by a friend recommending we all get our tale ends down to Daveys for this show, promising a great live performance. Slim Francis is a three piece out of Brooklyn playing a similar style to Tom Petty, calling their sound soul-infused rock-n-roll. Slim Francis features Matt Johnson on drums, a founding member of Jeff Buckleys band and Steve Brown on bass who has recently collaborated with Jay Bennet of Wilco. Opening the show is local singer/songwriter Gene Smith who has been putting in time on Daveys small stage during the weekly Tuesday night Living Room sessions. -di

American Catastrophe @ GRAND EMPORIUM
I have been known to say that if the writing of Edgar Allen Poe came with a soundtrack American Catastrophe would fill the tracks. A much better description is the one found on their MySpace page, American Catastrophe explores the Americana, the rural grit, the murderer and the romantic. A world of the seedy where one can die choking on the dove of peace or be beaten to death with a bouquet of roses. What the description lacks is mention of the passion this group brings to a live show. They mean it! The music doesnt just come from the heart it is straight from the soul. -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
Back to the Soundtrack: Velvet Goldmine
A few months ago I hit the Record Bar for glam night. During the performances Velvet Goldmine was playing on the screen behind the stage. I have always loved this flick and its story of the volatile relationship between two Glam era musicians, one character Bowie-esqe the other smacking of Iggy Pop. So I rented the film on Netflix, and immediately following the viewing, popped into Needmore discs to place my order for the soundtrack. Of course, I knew the soundtrack would rise would rise to my all time favorite soundtrack list considering the bands that fill the tracks include Grant Lee Buffalo, T. Rex and Lou Reed. What left me curious was who made up the film bands The Venus In Furs and Wylde Rattz. Not to my surprise, these two bands are each a supergroup of musicians. The Venus In Furs include British songwriters Bernard Butler, and Thom Yorke of Radiohead, and Wylde Rattz including Mark Arm (Mudhoney), Ron Asheton (of the original Stooges), Thurston Moore and Steve Shelley (
Sonic Youth) and Mike Watt (The Minutemen). Pow! This one is a gem pups!
DIS NOTES:
I have a friend that every once in awhile will take me and other pals on field trips. These events tend to happen last minute and result with us ending up in a place we have never been before. Last Saturday night we found ourselves on one of these field trips. While we were headed to Daveys it might could have been someplace we had never been beforeinstead of the place we frequent most often. Saturday Daveys was host to Jim Kilroys Club Wars. Youve never read about it here but you have likely seen it posted and listed on Kansas City area venue calendars. Its a battle of the bands tournament coursing over several weeks and ending with a championship round. (the Championship round of the current Club Wars (XI) will be November 10th at Beaumont Club if you are so inclined). Immediately upon walking through Daveys doors I knew we were in for something different. The sound coming from the main room stage was that of Montia, a band of testosterone fueled rockers from the area, o
f the Metal/Hardcore Rock genre. While I do sometimes like my music loud and fierce its not typically of this variety. They were obviously a crowd pleaser though, or had stacked the room with friends and family as it did not look or act like the typical Daveys crowd. We decided to get up close to the stage for the true Club Wars experience. Montia nor the crowd lacked energy but one of the band members dad decided we werent rockin enough and decided to lay hands on us to apparently motivate a little more rock from our stature. Back off daddy. Before resorting to the safety of the back bar and the mighty bartender Mokie, we remained up front as the boys in the band jumped off stage to move a contraption holding a bass drum and an empty beer keg to stage front. One of the boys played it through the next song. This might have been a cool effect except the drummer that remained on stage was playing a completely different rhythm making the whole experiment difficult to follow.
What followed next Im usually all forthe destroying of instruments, however, in this particular case the big boy behind the effort splintered the piece and we were ducking guitar bullets as we fled to the back of the room. H. Gage was up next and for all intensive purposes won my vote. They were a kinder and gentler metal band who even pulled an Irish ditty from their catalog that I was quite pleased by. H. Gage however, was beat down by the evenings winner Montia. I cornered Jim Kilroy later in the evening to get the skinny on the Club Wars action. It took some strong arming by me to get him to talkseems he doesnt like to share too much if you dont have credentials. After convincing him I was okay he gave me the scoop but at that it was the basics. Or maybe it was me and the result of a couple cocktails (much needed this particular evening) and I was just not asking the right questions. No auditions, the Wars are open to any band comprising of at least two members and w
illing to pay the $50 entry fee. There are prizes for tournament winners along with the benefit of playing to new crowds. I guess my feminine whiles were just too much for Mr. Kilroy as he abruptly ended the conversation and walked away. Club Wars have spawned some siblings with Country Wars, Alternative Wars, Cover Wars and the newest Funk Wars.
Club Wars will now be stowed away in the Sad Dog archives. Stay tuned to other publications for further reports.
