Goodnight Daylight, Middle Picker and This Alibi @ MIKES TAVERN
Well, well, well boys, its about time we heard from you again. Here at Sad Dog HQ we are happy to see that Goodnight Daylight is out of hiding and back on the stage with some new gems to boot. Unfortunately, and although publicized as such, this eve is not a CD release as GD is still polishing the new album, slated for release in a couple of months. Heres what the boys have to say about their return:
If you thought Goodnight Daylight had disappeared into oblivion of local KC band history, then you are sorely mistaken. The truth is, a week hasn't gone by that we haven't been practicing, recording or drinking. So come out this Friday night to Mike's Tavern in KCMO for your first chance to see GD show off its wares in nearly 8 months. We'll be debuting some new material, and trying to remember how our old stuff goes. Either way, we guarantee that we'll rock your ass off.

Rex Hobart and the Misery Boys and Giants Chair @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
Tonight is the first of a 2-night stand at Daveys for Rex and the Boys. They are keeping the cover low at $3 each night. They will be recording both nights for a soon to be released self-produced Live CD (2007) to be distributed by Bloodshot Records commemorating 10 years of Rex Hobart and the Misery Boys.

Shooter Jennings @ KEMPER ARENA
Son of outlaw and legend Waylon Jennings, it would be a sad situation if it turned out this country son had no talent. Well, Shooter is out on his Electric Rodeo tour and proving that in his case talent doesnt skip a generation. I have not seen Shooter live, but have been given the two thumbs up from everyone I know who has gotten a taste of the live Shooter. As far as Shooters recordings, I have never fully embraced his 2005 freshman release Put The O Back In Country. However, I certainly made up for my fear of commitment with his 2006 release Electric Rodeo as I dont let it stray far from my side. Where as O is straight in the pocket country, Electric Rodeo shoots from the hip at first song and title track. With this sophomore release, Shooter holds onto his country core but adds some down and dirty with a dose of sweet Southern Rock. I have plans this Friday eve, and its not with Shooter, but you can be sure Electric Rodeo will be spinnin in the ol disc player. -

98.9s Freakers Ball @ Community America Ballpark
Thats right pups, Motorhead plays KC! If you dont know Motorhead well then get yourselves an education. Theyve being doing their full-on rock assault since 1975, have no less than three tribute bands in their honor and their wonder-song Ace of Spades has possibly been covered more times than cover song standard Mustang Sally.okay thats pushing it. They are badass and this is their only date in the U.S. on this tour. How that happened we arent rightly sure but wed like to meet the person that pulled those strings. If youve never been to a Freakers Ball, hold tight, theres no other possible name for such an event.
The evening includes a $1K costume contest so bring your best.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1
Steve Poltz and Billy Harvey @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
8:30 pm; $10 adv / $12 dos
Billy Harvey produced Steve Poltz's Chinese Vacation as well as Bob Schneider's I'm Good Now. Hes also a member of Bob Schneiders band.
In the headlining position is Steve Poltz. What do you need to know about Steve Poltz? Lets start off with a bit of highlights taken from his bio. He trick-or-treated at Liberaces house, planned a two-day stay in Amsterdam that ended a month later with him escaping the city under the cover of darkness, and was Bob Hopes favorite altar boy. Alone, these anecdotes go well with a fistful of peanuts at a cocktail party. But on top of these add that this person also co-wrote the longest-running song on the Billboard Top 100, had a debut solo album that earned three and a half stars in Rolling Stone, and was awarded the title of San Diegos Most Influential Artist of the Decade at the San Diego Music Awards. What you end up with is one of the most engaging, twisted, and prolific songwriters of our time. What does that really mean? Hes a man of wit and charm that commands an audience and likely does so in what ever environment his being lands him in. He could also turn a song lik
e Amazing Grace into something amusing. He also put out one of my favorite CDs on the fly. Yep, last time I saw him he recorded the show and had a 4-cd live recording of the nights show available for sale immediately following the show, and was available to personally sign each one with an original drawing. Steve only makes it through KC about every 18 months. Last time through he brought his pal Stinky on a bucket drum and Im still not sure who was more amusing. Must not miss show of the week for fans of the singer/songwriter genre. -di

Original Sinners, 7 Shot Screamers and Last Call Girls @ RECORD BAR
Whoa Nelly, Wednesday marks the night of dilemmas as the Sad Dog ladies have been waiting for quite some time to see our beloved Steve Poltz head back to town. But can we be so bold as to miss L.A. punk goddess, member of legendary late 70s early 80s punk group X, member of electrified county folk ensemble The Knittersthe fabulous Excene Cervenka and, her Original Sinners? With two albums under their belt, the 2002 self-titled Original Sinners and the 2005 sophomore release Sev7en, Exene is still rockin out with her own unique punk flair leading a band that cant help but smack of the X we know and love. I choose to believe that all can be accomplished this eve. For those of you who join us in the throws of live musical chairs, the Billy Harvey / Steve Poltz show starts at 8:30 p.m. and the Record Bar is open until 1:30 a.m. If you see a flash go by this Wednesday eve and you end up with a clump of fur in your face, you can be sure its the Sad Dog ladies chasin
their tails to catch all the night has to offer.

Pendergast w/ The Down Trunks and Great Dane @ THE HURRICANE
The Rock Gods have answered and saved The Hurricane from its fateful future posing as a Plaza Bar. The owners of Jerrys Bait Shop have taken ownership and plan to bring back The Hurricane of yesteryear. It officially re-opens on Halloween Night but KCs Pendergast and The Down Trunks will be breaking it in. Lots going on tonight but if The Hurricane produces in old tradition, the rock will ring into late hours.

NEW RELEASES:
Lucinda Williams Car Wheels On A Gravel Road Deluxe Edition (2006,Lost Highway Records)
I was first introduced to Lucinda in 1998 with the release of Car Wheels On A Gravel Road. At first listen I was hooked and immediately dove into her catalogue, wondering how the hell I had missed out on her music up to this point. Some dear friends of mine and I spent many a night, drunk on wine, singing the songs off of Car Wheels at full volume. Greenville and Drunken Angel seemed to be our favorites to cover. What we lacked in vocal ability at 2:00 in the morning we more than made up in conviction. Lucinda is a woman who writes without fear of what others might think. She wears her emotions on her sleeve and it always shows through her lyrics, as well as her vocals, which arent traditionally beautiful but filled with a level of passion that drives right to the heart. She draws on country, blues and folk styles often citing Howlin Wolf and Townes Van Zandt as influences. She has a knack for surrounding herself with talent and Car Wheels was no exception. Players on this
album include Gurf Morlix (guitar), Steve Earle (guitar), Charlie Sexton (guitar and vocals) and Bo Ramsey (guitar). This combination of players, and of course some amazing songwriting on Lucindas part, garnered her a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
Now, Lost Highway Records has put together this Deluxe Edition including:
A newly remastered version of Car Wheels and two previously unreleased tracks
Alternate and previously unissued versions of select tunes
Previously unreleased 1998 full concert performance WXPN Live at the World Caf
Featuring guest performances by Steve Earle, Emmylou Harris and Charlie Sexton
And much more
Car Wheels on a Gravel Road is an album that should have a home in all CD collections. And for this selection, I suggest a nice cabernet. -jaq

OTHER NEWS:
HELP MARCIA BALL AND THE TIPITINAS FOUNDATION PROVIDE INSTRUMENTS TO NEW ORLEANS STUDENTS
(The following was taken from an email from Waterloo Records (Austin, TX)
Last week we received an e-mail from Austin musician Marcia Ball regarding helping schools and students in New Orleans replace instruments lost in last years catastrophic flooding, especially Douglas High, in the 9th Ward across the street from Charmaine Neville's house. You can help by donating money or instruments. From Marcia's email:
The most direct line to donate instruments or money, and get it to the schools or musician,s is through the Tipitina's Foundation http://www.tipitinasfoundation.org/.
In their own words: "This last year we have been replacing instruments for local schools' band programs and local musicians we gave out instruments to over a dozen local school band programs and have replaced hundreds of local professionals' instruments and gear since December 2005."
The Instruments A Comin' program is at: http://www.tipitinasfoundation.org/programs/iac/. If you want to make a donation and earmark it specifically for Charmaine's school, indicate so. You can send instruments and donations directly to Instruments A Comin' at:
Tipitina's Music Office, 501 Napoleon Avenue,New Orleans, LA 70115 or write to the director of the program btaylor@tipitinas.com.
If you are in the Austin area and have instruments or contributions, write to us at instruments@marciaball.com. We'd love to take a trailer load when we go to New Orleans in December. If you're somewhere else and have a good instrument, doesn't have to be new, write to us. We'll figure out how to get it to N.O. Any questions, please write. Do we need to pick up a tuba? Okay. Thank you so much. Please pass this on.
-Marcia

DIS NOTES:
Many nights as I write Sad Dog Ill fill up the CD changer with bands on the weeks line-up for a bit of influence. Joy. This week is a bit different and the house sits silent besides the occasional visit to MySpace pages. Yesterday I discovered that Sad Dog HQ (Di Annex) had been burglarized. Violated. After spending a few hours trying to hunt down one missing feline Lefty, I came back inside to survey the damage. Ive discovered that material possessions are not all that important to me except when in the form of CDs holding some of my favorite sounds. Nope, I dont have an IPod so theres likely some gems missing for good. I havent yet brought myself to closely guess-inventory what is gone but theres 180 friends missing from my CD collection for the time being. Bastards. I imagine as the weeks and months go by Ill discover specifically whats gone when I want to hear it. Bitter. Did the thieves have discerning tastes?well see what remains in the days to come. Curious.
Lesson: inventory your collection and appreciate your friends. Ive got some dandies who have helped me clean, launder my drawers all touched and tossed, called with kind words, offered to make repairs, and kept me company and even some who have offered to help me regain some of those lost sounds. You guys all rock and you know who you are. Lucky.

JAQS NOTES:
I have a few ever-changing rules when it comes to burning CDs. At a live show (in particular a club show), dont let your friend buy the disc and then you burn it later. If you dig the band, you both must make the purchase that night as every disc sold puts gas in the van and gets the band to the next gig. Although deep down it really isnt right, you can get away with burning a disc by any band whose members are already millionaires and are charging $100 to $400 for a ticket to the concert. If you are someone who writes about live music, you can let a friend burn a CD for you so that you might promote this band on your e-newsletter, but only on the condition that you intend to make a purchase the next time you are at Needmore Discs. Finally, if you or a friend has purchased a CD, and it is lost or STOLEN, it is fair game to burn that disc so that your friend may continue to enjoy the sweet sounds. So, Di, I am here for you as your journey into the land of the lost discs begins.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21
Andre Williams & the Diplomats of Solid Sound and The Afterparty @ RECORD BAR
Andre Williams has quite a story. He is a songwriter and composer, was a staff producer and A&R man for Barry Gordy at Motown, produced material for Stevie Wonder, Ike & Tina Turner and George Clintons Funkadelic and eventually hit rock bottom with a crack addiction. He pulled himself up and came back around to record what has been deemed his sleeze rock masterpiece, Silky , as well as tour with the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, even garnering the executive producer credit on their 1998 release Acme. You can visit www.intherecords.com/pages/andre.html for an extended bio. Andres music is most fittingly described as raunchy R&B and soul and he holds the titles of R&B legend and The Black Godfather. In 1999 Andre joined forces with The Sadies (spaghetti western-surf-garage-punk) and Bloodshot records to put out the album Red Dirt. If you visit iTunes you will see a red box enclosing the word Explicit next to every song off of Red Dirt. Andre is a dirty bird with a l
ove for the ladies, and he most certainly likes to share the things he likes about him most. I caught Andre at the Continental Club at the 2006 SXSW music festival. KCs Burly Q ladies Etta Vendetta and Gilda Lily performed a saucy burlesque with Andre, and needless to say, it proved to be one steamy show. And not to worry, the Burly Q ladies will be up on stage shakin their sass once again.
KCs indie, experimental, country outfit, The Afterparty, is hot off of tour, out with a new album Under the Rainbow and will surely provide their usual crowd-pleasing performance. If you are not familiar with The Afterparty visit their MySpace page for a description provided by the Pitch Weekly that hits the Afterparty nail right on the head.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 22
Scroat Belly Reunion Show w/ Midday Ramblers @ REPLAY LOUNGE (Lawrence, KS) 3-7pm; $7 cover
Yeah- yeah- they are country-punk, but they are also rock/soul/bluegrass/metal and more way more. The labels could never convey that when you are listening to these smilin' maniacs, you might flashback: to hangin' out with those gearheads in the parking lot of the county fair, the ones talkin' shit, their FFA jackets torn up and covered in Black Flag patches. Those guys that would grab you into their truck and meet up with that sweet GTO on the red dirt road. cruisin' and then cutthroat racin' blastin' Motorhead the whole time. And after all that High Plains danger, you end up at some junkyard, watchin' a meteor shower. All while those boys had impromptu target practice with the rusty, Bud cans and one surprises you with a bracelet made of the pull tabs. Then a couple starts singin' some creepy hymn from church and you feel really, really lucky --- Hell yeah!! Scroat Belly is point-blank a Kansas classic; they are
fast/slow/sweet/salty/melodic/chaotic and leave their guts on the stage. If you, the music fan, have been apathetic or discouraged, if you have been brainwashed by Clear Channel, you will be revived this Sunday! And for those on probation (patchouli-drenched couple 3 yrs ago at Split Lip show, front row while The Derita Sisters were kickin' ass as openers, horrified and hands over ears for entire set), your attendance is mandatory! Everyone else, I know you'll be there let's support this homegrown, legendary band and show them how much we've missed 'em. Where are my manners? Scroat Belly: the sounds are scrumptious and lyrics quite delightful, you simply must join us on the patio if you don't, you will be remiss, goddamnit!!
Thank you to our friend and guest writer, the lovely Miss Killabeas, for sharing her words on Scroat Belly!

2 for 1 drink specials and $.75 tacos
Featuring: Honeywagen and Dead Girls Ruin Everything
Its always a good thing when Honeywagen takes the stage. And this time, they take it with Monty Black on bass, formerly of The Gaslights. Honeywagen released their second CD, Payday, in Spring of 2006 and its a bit more rockin than their first pop-tinged effort, Station Wow. Both are more than worth the purchase price, and without both, your local music collection is severely crippled. Cant make the show? Pick up their latest CD on Amazon.com

Back Porch Mary is definitely one of the hardest working touring bands in the business. It seems this country rock outfit is constantly on the road. Some times acoustic and sometimes plugged in. You never know what you are going to get but its always worth the trip to their shows.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26
Detroit Cobras, Taylor Hollingsworth and the Spidereaters and King Kahn and BBQ @
RECORD BAR
Strangely, neither Jaq nor I are all that familiar with Detroit Cobras. Strange because they sit on the Bloodshot Records label and we like just about all the bands and artists in the Bloodshot library. And for that reason we wanted to share with you a bit about them. Lacking knowledge we decided to borrow this little snippet from the motorcityrocks.com website.
The Detroit Cobras are one of the most original cover bands out there. Although the phrase "original cover band" sounds like an oxymoron, it fits for this band. The Cobras perform standards from the rich vaults of Motown, soul and 50's rock & roll. While most cover bands attempt to re-create the original, The Cobras take material from the past and build new, fresh versions. The result is a sound that's reminiscent of rock & roll roots, yet still full of innovation and garage rock energy.

Split Lip Rayfield Final Show dates announced:
Friday, December 1 @ LIBERTY HALL, Lawrence, KS
Friday, December 8 @ THE COTILLION, Wichita, KS
There are 11 dates leading up to the Kansas shows, and due to Kirk Rundstroms ongoing battle with esophageal cancer, he will retire from live performance following the final Split Lip dates in Kansas to concentrate on restoring his health. Although we dont know the plans of Jeff Eaton, Wayne Gottstine and Eric Mardis, they have all agreed, Split Lip Rayfield will not continue to perform in any incarnation after these shows.
We would like to thank the Split Lip boys for providing us with some of the best live shows the Sad Dog ladies have had the pleasure to attend, as well as the fantastic recordings that will continue to keep us shakin our asses over and over and over again. We wish you all the best of luck in your future endeavors.
But for nowdont miss the opportunity to spend one last night with Split Lip Rayfield!
And, you wont want to miss Scroat Belly, the band that spawned Split Lip Rayfield (featuring Kirk Rundstrom and Wayne Gottstine of SLR).

JAQS NOTES:
Heads Up Pups: Rockstar Super Showcase @ RECORD BAR
Friday, October 27th marks a night not to be missed in KC.
Heres the skinny. Be/Non is the backing band for a variety of KC singers to hit the stage and tear it up on some rock classics. A bit of a Rockstar Supernova rip-off (well, you know Ill be there!), Spice of Life Productions Bill Roach Sundahl will act as Master of Ceremonies. The list of songs from which to choose has been set and heres a taste of the confirmed performances:
Golden Earring: Radar Love / Gregg Todt of Federation of Horsepower
Van Halen; Hot for Teacher / Tim Nord of Shotgun Idols
Led Zeppelin: (Song Not Confirmed), but who cares when its Damon Jeffers of Hydrafader belting it out
Thin Lizzy: Cowboy Song / Steve Tulipana of Roman Numerals Pups, you and your ears are very lucky Steve jumped on this one, as this is one of my favorite songs of all time, and I would have had to embarrass myself on stage had it not been chosen. WHEW!! I will, however, be belting it with the rest of the Thin Lizzy fans.
So, there are many songs that have not been chosen and I dont see one lady in the group of rockers. Come on ladiesdont let the boys have all the fun!
There are still plenty of juicy tunes to choose by Kiss, Joan Jett, T-Rex, AC/DC, Journey, ZZ Top, Black Sabbath, Bon Jovi, The Cars, Van Halen, Def Leopard and Motley Crew.
Now, I have a couple of singer / song matchmaking ideas
Cody Wyoming (Golden Hearted Whores / Von Hodads) - Jeepster is yours.
Abigail Henderson (The Gaslights), The Cars Just What I Needed lady, you can knock this one out of the park.
So, did I spark your interest? I know you cant keep your paws off of this one!
For more information about the event and songs still available for the taking contact Michelle Cagle @ onozine@yahoo.com.

DIS NOTES:
It was a happy trip to Needmore Discs last week. A record store I grow to love with each visit. I prefer not to order CDs online. Theres something extremely gratifying about making the trip to record store, browsing the bins and finding pay dirt. This week it was the recent release from Bobby Bare Jr. The Longest Meow (Bloodshot Records). Its no secret were a fan of this fellow here at Sad Dog. Weve taken road trips to see him and have even asked for a photo-op with our fair boy Bare. Hes only been through KC once since I have been familiar with him and at that it was in the opening slot for Junior Brown where he charismatically won over the crowd with his rock and wit. Im making a trip to St. Paul this week and hell be playing in the neighboring Minneapolis. Ill be doing my darnedest to rush my dinner with colleagues to make the show. Im still cozying up to this record but can already tell its a keeper and will make the rounds in my CD changer as frequently as his las
t two. His latest effort is 11 songs long and recorded in just 11 hours on one day back in March 06. His friends and fellow musicians joined him that day. Talent pulled in from bands My Morning Jacket, ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, and Lambchop. His lyrics are once again charming and the music diverse - again making him one difficult to categorize and incredibly addicting.
*Bobby Bare Jr. is playing Mojos in Columbia, MO this weekend, Saturday, October 21.

Haunted Creepies, Spook Lights, and Troglodyte @ THE BRICK
There are 13 witches in a coven, we steer clear of the 13th floor of a building and many choose not to even leave the house when the13th day of the month falls on this 6th day of the week. Today, however, is prime time for The Haunted Creepies to rise up and take their place on the stage at the Brick. Usually they save their rare appearance for All Hallows Eve. This year it seems they must release their wrath of rock and roll a bit early.
Although they appear in hoods, hiding their identity, it has been rumored that they are the darker alter-egos of KCs premier rock outfit Cretin 66. One thing is for sure, this show is only for the brave at heartthose who arent afraid to stare the balls out rock in the face and flash the devil horns. Garage, Psychobilly, Surf Lawrence band Spooklights and Troglodyte (Neanderthal Rock) will be joining the Creepies this eve.

THEATRE:
Rocky Horror Picture Show @ LATE NIGHT THEATRE
I remember in high school heading down to Westport to the old Tivoli Theatre, equipped with squirt gun, rice, newspaper and toast, ready for another rowdy night of the cult classic Rocky Horror Picture Show. I owned the film, which I think I still have on video, and cited Columbia as my favorite character, often tying one on and belting out her songs from the film. Although this performance is taking place on the Late Night Theatre Stage, it is a Eubank Production, and word on the street is that they are changing this production up a bit giving Rocky Horror fans some new twists. I recommend checking it out as I saw the Eubank Production of both Rocky Horror and Hedwig and the Angry Inch at Just Off Broadway Theatre and walked away both times a very satisfied pup. -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
Nostalgia: A wistful desire to return in thought or in fact to a former time in ones lifeor to ones family and friends; a sentimental yearning for the happiness of a former place and time. -Dictionary.com
I cant really say I have had a conscious yearning for the nostalgic as of late, but I have happily been handed a heavy dose this past week. Two shows popped up on the calendar that shot me straight back to the happiness of a former time.
The First was the Tenderloin Reunion, Saturday night at Daveys Uptown. The room was packed full of fans of Tenderloin, comprised of KCs Ernie Locke (Harmonica / Vocals) and John Cutler (Bass Guitar / Vocals) and Dallas, TX boys Taz Bentley (Drums) and Kirk St. James (Guitar). The guys were in great spirits and obviously happy to be back together playin to their KC fans on the Daveys Stage. From first note of the their heavy hittin, sexy groovin blues n rock, the crowd began bouncin up and down to the beat of a sound that has been long overdue to head back to these parts. You could spot rock shirts from other Ernie Locke projects, in particular, Sin City Disciples, which goes down as one of my favorite bands of all times. Ernie was true to form and when egged on by the crowd to rip of his shirt said, Do you really want to see a 44 year old fat man take his shirt off. Apparently we did, and he wasnt one to deny. It proved to be a belly shakin good time the rest of the eve
and shot me back to a day when Daveys was half the size and we all crammed in the bar to catch one more Sin City Showonly to walk out dripping in sweat and wondering when we would get our next dose of that KC love.
The Second trip down memory lane came in the form of Soul Asylum and took place at Harrahs VooDoo Lounge. Although I was less than impressed by the slight turn out for these boys who tore up the airwaves in the early eighties, I was highly impressed by the band itself. After a seven-year hiatus and a string of hard knocks, they sounded as if they never missed a beat. Soul Asylum founders Dave Pirner and Dan Murphy seemed to have made some peace with the loss of bassist Karl Mueller to esophageal cancer last year. Although it was evident he was missed, they pulled no punches and came out strong with Grave Dancers Union hits Somebody to Shove and Black Gold which had me jumping up and down like I was back in my 20s. They continued shellin out the hits, played some more obscure but much loved tunes of past and premiered songs off of their new release The Silver Lining, which I made point to purchase on my way out the door.
NostalgiaI think I like it. At the very least my brushes with the blast to the past has kept a smile on my face for a week.

DIS NOTES:
CBGB R.I.P.
Its a sad day October 15th for American punk and rock-n-roll. Come this Sunday the legendary punk rock venue C.B.G.B. O.M.F.U.G. in NYCs lower East Side closes its doors after 33 years. In the summer of 1991 I was living in NYC and being the music fan I am did what many do and made the pilgrimage to the legendary venue. It didnt matter who was playing its a musical landmark being the place that launched punk rock in America. I did happen to catch Fish Bone and nearly break my legs one night. I climbed upon a chair at the back of the pit to get a better view. Not only that but I shared said chair with a fellow show goer. Oh silly girls. Once the band got rolling the crowd started rocking and swiftly moved our way knocking us over and the table behind us and we landed on the tables edge by our kneesnot able to reach the ground behind us with our hands. The sight of us dangling there is a sight so awful Im often finding myself sharing the experience. We were quickly helped to
our feet but not before the welts on the back of our knees started to rise. Its times like these youre thankful for such a small venue and the short walk to the bar. Only a swift whisky shot was going to ease the pain and get us through the nightand that it did. Fish Bone always puts on one hell of a show but it was being inside those walls that made the night so special. It is dark, its dingy, it smells and there isnt a bathroom to match the foulness of those inside CBGBs. Id certainly rather be there than The White House. What does CBGBs stand for? Country, Bluegrass and Blues, the kind of music owner Hilly Kristal hoped to showcase when he opened the doors in December 1973. Those styles being on short supply at that time in NYC it was the punk rock bands that gravitated to its doors and launched punk rock music in America. Its been a long battle for CBGBs over the last couple years with many icons standing up to the plate in a fight to keep its doors open. Alas, Kristal
s landlord, Landlords Bowery Residents Committee, is refusing to renew his lease after a fight over an increase in rent. CBGB launched the careers of many including Blondie, The Ramones, Talking Heads and Patti Smith to name a few, a few of which are playing this week before they close the doors. Word has it Kristal plans to take many of the fixtures of the current venue, including the urinals, and reopening in Las Vegas in the near future. Yuck is about all I have to say about that and Im not talking about the relocation of urinals. There are a couple great books out there you might want to pick up if youve never been there or even if you have. Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk by Legs McNeil and Gillian McCain is the early history of punk in America. Many of the stories begin and end at CBGBs. There is also an excellent book of photography from CBGBs called CBGB & OMFUG: Thirty Years from the Home of Underground Rock. For you trivia buffs O.M.F.U.G. stands
for (and) other music for uplifting gormandizers

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6 First Friday!
Tenderloin Reunion w/ The Architects @ DAVEYS UPTOWN
10pm; $12 adv / $15 dos
Its the Tenderloin Reunion Tour pups, featuring original members, Ernie Locke, John Cutler, Taz Bentley and Kirk St. James. We here at Sad Dog HQ like just about any project Ernie Locke has been involved with over the years. Sin City Disciple was perhaps the best live band in Kansas City, ever. Parlay was his last band before leaving Kansas City for the warm sunshine of Florida. Its seems its the middle project and probably most recognized, Tenderloin, that brings him home for a couple reunion shows. In its heyday Tenderloin released 3 CDs, toured nationwide with the Reverend Horton Heat among others and covered Shotgun Willie on the Willie Nelson tribute album alongside the likes of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Jello Biafra. Locke even made an appearance on The Tonight Show playing harp in the good company of the Supersuckers and Willie Nelson you can find it on YouTube.com. See here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m01wnyjk4sY
The boys warmed their chops earlier this week at Tuesday nights Living Room session at Daveys and were happy to see their hardcore blues-rock will be finding its way to the Daveys stage for a double header this weekend. Also check out this weeks Pitch and Preview section of The Star for more on Tenderloin.

Valient Thorr, The Last of the V8s and The Kelihans @ THE BRICK
Again, Im missing Valient Thorr. It seems this band is bound to elude me for all eternity. Im always out of town when they head this way and I always hear about their performance upon my return. They are heavy rock and you can catch a listen on MySpace. But if youre smart youll catch the action live cuz its what all the kids talk about on Monday. Were guessing The Kelihans might be first up as John Cutler, The Kelihans mandolin player, will be playing bass with Tenderloin at Daveys come the rock hour. -di

Soul Asylum w / New Amsterdams @ HARRAHS VOODOO
Soul Asylum, hell yeah!!! Off of a seven-year sabbatical, Soul Asylum founders Dave Pirner and Dan Murphy have moved past grieving the loss of friend and band member Karl Mueller and came out of it with the desire to record a new album and hit the road. The Replacements Tommy Stinson has joined the band on bass and is apparently the only friend that Karl could endorse to replace himself in the band. The Silver Lining, Soul Asylums ninth full-length album, is their first studio album since the 1998 release Candy From a Stranger. In their hey day, the early nineties, when the Grave Dancers Union tracks Runaway Train, Somebody to Shove and Black Gold littered the airwaves and video-waves, I was right there lovin what they were shellin out. I caught a couple of live shows back then. Once was at a now non-existent SXSW venue and once at the Kansas City Spirit Festival, where they played all their mega-hits as well as a ragin cover of Glen Campbells Rhinestone Cowboy. I a
m psyched to have them back, look forward to checking out the new tunes and cant wait to relive those 90s sounds I loved so much. -jaq

JAQS NOTES:
YouTube
Since we gave it a mention earlier in the dog I felt it was appropriate timing to elaborate, open up and share with you one of my new addictions.
I feel like I might be preaching to the choir, and I may be a bit behind the times in my discovery, but since my introduction I am addicted to YouTube. I was first introduced to YouTube during this 2006 season of Rockstar Supernova on CBS. YesI must be in the mood for sharing I am also addicted to Rockstar. A friend of mine would send me links to videos of the Rockstar performers, before they were on Rockstar. From there it spiraled out of control as one addiction often leads to another.
What is YouTube? YouTube is a way to get your videos to the people that matter to you. What the hell does that mean? To help clarify I pulled a little info from the site. With YouTube you can upload, tag, share videos and browse thousands of videos uploaded by community members. Although up to this point my participation has strictly been one of a voyeur, it seems you can delve further into the YouTube world by creating video groups with people of similar interests and customizing your experience with playlists and subscriptions. Let me break it down for you, the music lover. You visit www.youtube.com. You find the Search for box and you type in sayRyan Adams. What pops up is everything from a killer video of the Ryan Adams featuring Adam Duritz performance of Answering Bell on the Tonight show, to a Gap commercial featuring Ryan and Willie Nelson. I have been perusing YouTube as I have been writing my notes. So far I have watched, or listened to, Son Volts Highway 61 p
erformance on Letterman; Buick MacKane performing Gravity in 1997 in Austin, TX; Soul Asylum Runaway Train MTV Unplugged (thought I would pull that one up since I was already reminiscing); Sin City Disciples in 1991, live at the Bottleneck (with Ernie Locke as Elvis lathered in gold lame) and at Harlings Upstairs (How could you forget those showsthe crowd jumping up and down so hard you thought you might fall through the floor)man, I was at those shows! And, the aforementioned Supersuckers, Willie Nelson performance of Bloody Mary Morning, featuring our own Ernie Locke tearin it up on harp. Kick Ass!!! What you can find is endless. The videos vary wildly in quality and many times I tune in just to hear the live performances.
Sorry pups, if you are like me you may not need another addiction. But I must urge you to take on this one. It is a blast!!!
www.youtube.com

DIS NOTES:
I had one of those great nights this week. You know the kind. You get some place a bit early in time to catch a band or songwriter unknown to you and it turns out to be one of the best things youve seen in awhile. Tuesday was that kind of night for me. Headed to Daveys for what is turning out to be my favorite night to go out. The weekly Living Room sessions are just that much fun. Always good people, well attended, great music and never lacking for surprises (this is was the boys from Tenderloin). So I get there way early and happen to catch the end of The New Tragedies set (not for me) followed by Memphis singer-songwriter Cory Branan. I had such a great time at his show I hopped online the next day to listen to more and find out about this witty bloke from the South. Turns out he is not so unknown. Rolling Stone says, Theres a new breed of singer-songwriterRyan Adams, Bright Eyes Conor Oberst and now Cory Branan. There is also a recent article about Branan in Playboy. He
s a witty one with a cadence that at times reminded me of John Dee Graham and he certainly shares his intensity. Toss in the drawl of Ben Nichols from Lucero and the like-humor of Bobby Bare Jr. Not a bad mixture of songwriters to draw comparisons from. We screwed the pooch on this one. Im real sorry we neglected writing about him last week but sometimes one slips by us. Not next time. If you dig any of the aforementioned artists hop online and spend some time with Cory Branan and next time see his show.
