KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

Sad Dog MySpace Profile Song of the Week: "Next Question" by Andrew Duplantis

www.myspace.com/saddogkc

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1 – First Friday!
Forrest Whitlow @ BORDERS ON THE BOARDWALK (North Kansas City)
7pm
Original Forrest Whitlow acoustic tunes will be on the menu this eve to compliment a tasty coffee drink, or my favorite, Chai latte. Don't dally pups, this will be your last chance to catch Forrest in KC this year.
FYI – Three of Forrest Whitlow's originals are on the Neil Young protest site, Living With War Today. Earlier in the year Neil began taking submissions of protest songs for this site. Currently there are 1,000 songs on the site for your listening pleasure, the top 10 featured on the cover of the Living with War Today web page. The more hits the songs receive, the higher up the list they move. So you know what to do. Visit www.neilyoung.com and click on Forrest's tunes to give them a nudge up the charts. For you musicians out there, visit www.songs@lwwwtoday.com to submit your protest tune.

The Afterparty, The Popsicles and Bleeding Hands @ RECORD BAR
There's something otherworldly about The Afterparty that feels like a nursery rhyme. Each show is a slightly different interpretation of their songs consistently making them sound fresh and new while at the same time always comforting like a familiar warm blanket. With apologies to the boys in the band those backup singers, The Burnettes, are downright adorable and damn sexy to boot. Bleeding Hands is the new outfit in town consisting of former members of The Gaslights and The Litigators. It's a full Kansas City bill tonight with The Popsicles also in tow – sort of pop, marking their influences as "bearded dragons, underwear and cowboys".

Split Lip Rayfield has had a grand run of it. December 8th in Wichita will mark the end of Split Lip Rayfield as a live performance entity. They given us some great memories over the years, some of the best nights and undoubtedly some of best live shows we've ever had the pleasure of seeing. With great respect and true fondness – thank you!

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 2 – Happy Birthday Jon Stubblefield!
Sad Dog and Spice of Life Productions presents a Holidaze Party & Rock and Roll Show!! @ DAVEY'S UPTOWN
Featuring It's Over, Buffalo Saints, Andrew Duplantis & Fred Ramirez and Jon Stubblefield
Our friend Andrew Duplantis is braving the elements and headed from Austin, TX to the great Midwest. One of the hardest working musicians in Austin, Andrew has quite a resume. Most recently he has been found playing bass with Son Volt and Jon Dee Graham. Past credits include stints with Alejandro Escovedo, Meat Puppets, Richard Buckner, Bob Mould and Tia Carrera. He just came out with his new solo album, "Color Blind" with his band The Unfaithfuls and is on a Duo Tour with band member Fred Ramirez. Andrew takes the stage at 11:00 pm, and this is just the icing on the cake as we have the cream of the crop of KC bands / musicians on this bill as well.
10pm: Jon Stubblefield - Channeling the sounds of Outlaw Country, like he was raised by Waylon and Willie themselves. A man to make Hank Williams proud! And bonus, tonight is Jon's B-Day.
12am: Buffalo Saints - KC alt-country at it's finest. Their album "Walking the Dead" doesn't stray far from the disc player.
1am: It's Over - Wow!!! Wow!!! If you haven't caught the sounds of this 60's and 70's influenced, mid-eastern infused, high energy, make you dance your pants off group, you must take in the experience. We are proud to call these friends our friends! If you need a heavy dose of positive energy, this is the band for you!
Diana and I realized that this might be the one time this holiday that you will find us in the same room at the same time. We are busy ladies. So please join the ladies of Sad Dog and our friends Bill Sundahl and Wende Williamson of Spice of Life Productions (Crossroads Music Festival / Donkey Show), for a Holiday beverage and some kickin' live music!!!!!

White Ghost Shivers and The Dewayn Brothers @ JACKPOT MUSIC HALL (Lawrence, KS)
I am sad to say I have not seen this self-proclaimed "motley crue of hot string bands" from Austin, TX, but I have only heard rave reviews from those that have. Not having experienced the Shivers in the flesh I borrowed this description from their Myspace page, "White Ghost Shivers have been peeling the faces off of the unexpecting for seven years now. We revel in string band music from the 20's and 30's, mixing early jazz, hokum, vaudeville, ragtime, western swing and hillbilly, while at the same time unleashing the gutterous underbelly of a pseudo-rock world gone wrong…yee ha!!!" They will be joined by Emporia, KS country, folk rock and bluegrass band The Dewayn Brothers.
For those of you can't make it to Lawrence tonight, do not fret. The White Ghost Shivers will be at The Brick on December 9, or if you're up for a road trip, they will open up for Split Lip Rayfield at the Cotillion in Wichita, KS on December 8. -jaq

DVD PICK OF THE WEEK:

HOLIDAY GIFT IDEA:
Missouri Repertory Tickets – "Love, Janis", February 2 – March 18, 2006
Inspired by the Laura Joplin book "Love, Janis", this biography of 60's / 70's icon Janis Joplin will be performed on the new Copaken Stage, 13th and Walnut, Downtown Kansas City. The plan was to hire all local musicians for the full run of this KC stage production, however, I have no confirmation as to who was chosen to make up "the band". There is a disclaimer on the Missouri Rep website that this production "contains strong language, sexual references and drug abuse." Well, it might not be good for the kiddos but it's looking better and better to me all the time. Um, I would LOVE this for a Christmas gift!

JAQ'S NOTES:
My friend Darrin has been telling me to check out The Hold Steady for quite some time.
This weekend, on a Needmore Discs shopping spree, I noticed The Hold Steady would soon be playing at the Bottleneck. Bummed they weren't playing in KC, and knowing I wouldn't be heading to Lawrence on this school night, I bought my first album by this group, their 2006 release, "Boys and Girls in America". Based in Brooklyn but hailing from Minneapolis, their sound is hard to pinpoint. As a base, they are definitely rock and Craig Finn's unique vocals will have you at first hook. His sound has a quality that reminds me a bit of Brent Best of Slobberbone and his phrasing drums up Springsteen. At times I fear they might be headed to a place of too much pop, but then they draw it back not letting me loose. There is no denying their 70's rock influence, in particular the band Thin Lizzy, which spawned one of my favorite tunes of all time 'The Cowboy Song". "Boys and Girls In America" was definitely "like at first listen" but there was no immediate love. Well, five days later, the
"Boys
and Girls" is still in the car disc player and with every rotation I discover a new layer and the volume gets louder. Darrin's words of wisdom have no longer fallen on deaf ears. I am hooked. Thanks again D for once again turning me on to something new.

DI'S NOTES:
Is it ironic that I've been delivering Sad news so often over the last year? Well here I go again. After 5+ years of touring, recording, and in their own words, "throwing our middle fingers at the powers that be", Portland, Oregon's I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch In The House is calling it quits. How I have loved the growl of Mike D. It was just over a year ago that I was damn near threatened to be stripped of any credibility if I didn't catch their show. And that I did in March of this year, for the first time and now I discover it was the only time. One great band, possessing the demons of rock-n-roll, country swagger, punk rock ethos, politically embattled, and they put on one hell of a show. With the bad comes some good. Although the boys are going their separate ways Mike D. will pursue solo work while focusing attention on the home front. Jon and Flap will continue with The Runaway Boys, and Dave with Spigot and all his other projects. And you can still get CDs through the
ir web
site at www.icanlickanysob.com.

They also have a van made for touring for sale if any bands are looking.
Someone give me some good news.

NEW RELEASES:
Ginger Leigh – Sugar In My Coffee (2006, BMI)
Last Thursday night I made it to Davey's to check out Patrice Pike, of Rockstar Supernova fame. Apparently, after her world wind summer as a "Rockstar", she went back to Austin with a wish list of who she wanted in her touring band, and she got them all. KC was the first night that the band members took turns showing off their solo wares, in place of an official opening act. All talented musicians, but no one "moved me." In moment of boredom I took to the side bar to chat with some friends. At one point a previously unheard voice permeated the entire bar, beckoning us all to move towards the stage. The voice belonged to a woman named Ginger Leigh, not a member of the band but manager of Patrice Pike, who hopped up on stage for a quick tune. It only took the one have me completely engaged, then like a well seasoned tease, her performance ended as if she had never been at Davey's at all. That voice "moved me." And being it was my lucky day, she had her album "Sugar In My Coffee
" for
sale. And being a good manager, when I asked if she had any recordings, Ginger asked if I wanted to purchase any of Patrice's material. "No, thank you". You see, Patrice is good, one hell of a performer, but she didn't "move me." In describing Leigh's sound I will stick to the first thought that came to my mind when I popped Sugar In My Coffee into the disc player, "This is what Annie Lennox would sound like if she were raised in Austin." -jaq

JAQ'S NOTES:
Ok, so a couple of weeks ago Diana and I laid down our personal holiday wish list. With the biggest shopping day/weekend of the year just around the corner, I thought I would share a few gift suggestions for the music lover on your Holiday list. And, the icing on the cake, most of these suggestions can be purchased online, from the comfort of your couch, therefore avoiding the crazed maniacal glazed over eyes of thousands of Thanksgiving weekend shoppers cashing in coupons and desperately searching sales.
A. Netflix Gift Certificate – If you are a regular reader of Sad Dog you might have guessed that we LOVE Netflix. Pay a monthly fee, get 1 to 3 movies at a time delivered to your mailbox and all DVD shopping is done online. The list of music related films in the Netflix library would wildly please any a live music lover.
www.netflix.com
B. Bloodshot Records Blowout Sale! – This annual year end holiday blowout is always worth a look. Right now, over 70 releases by Bloodshot artists have been discounted, some as low as $6. Plus, with a $30 purchase you begin to rack up free goodies.

www.bloodshotrecords.com
C. Needmore Discs – Just walk into Sad Dog's favorite local music retailer and the gift ideas will start flowing. Although this choice doesn't offer the luxury of shopping from the couch, the lovely folks at Needmore Discs will make you feel right at home. Support your local music store this holiday, pups!!!
www.myspace.com/needmorediscs
D. Artist Websites – Visit just about any artist website for great deals on all sorts of merchandise. Just this week I dove into some website holiday shopping. I can't, however, divulge where I did my shopping, as some of our readers are the gift recipients. All you need to know is a favorite artist, Google the band and head to the merch window for T-Shirts, CD's, albums, stickers, buttons and many more gift options of varying prices.
Happy Holiday and Happy Shopping!!!

DI'S NOTES:
Kansas City, how I love thee. It's not until I travel that I truly appreciate all that Kansas City has to offer on the music front. This week I find myself in Iowa sharing some quality time with family for the Thanksgiving Holiday. What I won't be doing this week is seeing any form of live music, or listening to much music for that matter outside of the holiday music playing in every retail establishment I might enter. I also will not be visiting any independent music stores nor will I be listening to any radio shows showcasing quality music. I will also not be talking about music with anyone who has any sense or taste. No free-form songwriter shows, no open mics, no rock, no country, not even a DJ or run in with Karaoke. And because I'm stealing time on mom's computer to write this….where I sit in the middle of the house – social center….not even will I get the opportunity lose myself on the Internet discovering new sounds. Yep, it's a music-free week for me and that's just
not si
tting right.
Have a great Thanksgiving and may it be filled with more than turkey. Get out and get some rock.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17
Crazy Talk, Seconds from Disaster and Slimm Spins @ MIKE'S TAVERN
Well hello rock-n-roll! Remember the days when rock wasn't about the loudest or the toughest? Circa 1985 it was about good-time music and something powerful you could shake your ass to, a-la cock rock, a-la Crazy Talk. Crazy Talk has brought the fun back with their debut release "Let's Get Rowdy", and a good time is certainly what this new CD incites….even as you clean the house as proven by this Sad Dog last night. With the recent dent in my CD collection it's damn delightful to start the build-up with a CD containing endless catchy hooks and a singer that can truly sing rock-n-roll. There's never enough straight forward rock-n-roll in Kansas City and tonight you can get a full helping and take some home with you. Tonight at Mike's these Olathe rowdies will be celebrating the release of their new CD "Let's Get Rowdy" and daring you not to shake it when they hit the stage. Oh, and I almost forgot – the return of Slimm Spins, for a night anyway. Rockin' the vinyl sounds of cou
ntry,
rock and the precious croon of one crippled girl…if you're lucky. -di

Wowee, take a gander at the bands on this bill. Good thing you have Sad Dog to tell you how this evening is going to go down because with names like that on a bill it reads like an invitation to a disturbed pre-teen queen slumber party. On second thought….let's go with that mental visual. -di

Boozeday Tuesday Matinee @ THE BRICK
Featuring: Arthur Dodge, Tony Ladesich and Chad Rex
8pm / 10:00pm; 2 bands / $5 cover
2 for 1 drink specials and $.75 tacos
Tonight offers up a healthy plate of Americana rock from three of KC / Lawrence's best singer-songwriters. Arthur Dodge hails from Lawrence, KS and when not out solo can be seen with his Horsefeathers. Their newest release "Room #4" has received great reviews comparing the sound to Springsteen, Neil Young and even Tom Waits.
Tony Ladesich hails from one of KC's favorite ameri-rock groups Pendergast. His songwriting gets much praise here at Sad Dog HQ and we are anxiously awaiting that sophomore Pendergast album. KC's Chad Rex just put out one hell of a fine sophomore release "Gravity Works, Fire Burns" with the Victorstands on Mars Motors Records.
If you want a taste of some damn good KC songwriting you won't want to miss Boozeday this eve.

Goodnight Daylight, Diamond Heart Club and Brody Buster Band @ THE HURRICANE
Damn if I'm not going to miss another Goodnight Daylight show…boy it's good to see those boys are playing again. Famously, one of the most fun nights to go out in Kansas City is the night before Thanksgiving. If I were going to be in town this is the show I would hit. The Hurricane is back in better form, scrubbed down, friendly staff, larger stage and enough stage lights to crave those days of arena rock. Diamond Hearts Club is a new venture for Mark Hennessy, former singer of Paw and Heather Lofflin currently of Whisky Boots. -di

Blackpool Lights and Making Movies @ RECORD BAR
The Blackpool Lights boys are stopping back through KC after coming off of a tour with Social Distortion and The Supersuckers. Wow! Now that's a line-up to please a pup! But don't let their recent road company fool you as Blackpool Lights veers away from the balls out rock of The Supersuckers and the punk born sound of Social D, instead shelling out their brand of straight up indie powerpop. NEW RELEASES:
Tenacious D " The Pick of Destiny" (2006, Sony BMG Music Entertainment) Before hitting superstardom, and barring the film The School of Rock (which I find hilarious), my favorite Jack Black works fall from 1999 to 2000 with his supporting roles in Jesus' Son and High Fidelity and his HBO series that documents the rock duo, Tenacious D (Jack Black and Kyle Gass), struggling to make it in the LA rock world. They are the self-proclaimed greatest rock band in the world and their first song was, well, "Tribute", "a tribute to the greatest rock song in the world that when once played…the small crowds brains collectively exploded." Visit YouTube for a video of this tune featuring the Foo Fighters. In 2001 they released their first album, "Tenacious D", that is the ultimate rock comedy album. And it's dirty pups…and I love it! I haven't put my paws on the sophomore release but have noticed that this time they put out a clean and an explicit version. I suggest you purchase the one ma
rked e
xplicit as this gives you the full dose of "D". The boys are infectious, hilarious, consciously uncensored and stellar entertainers driven by the bottled cherub angst of Kyle and the overwhelming ego of Jack. Kyle tends to play straight man, of sorts, to Jacks insanity, putting them in category with the comedy duo greats. –jaq

A Scratch Between the Ears

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

Sad Dog MySpace Profile Song of the Week: “River” by Whiskey Boots
www.myspace.com/saddogkc

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 10
It’s Over, Whiskey Boots and The Afterparty @ THE HURRICANE
10pm; $7
A few months ago we received a phone call from our friend Roach letting us know that KC’s Premiere Variety Show, The Donkey Show, scheduled for the Hurricane, would be the last night the establishment would be open. If there was any reservation about heading out that night, it quickly exited our minds and we went to get one last look at a venue that at one time was in our rotation for viewing live music. We went, we reminisced about all of the great shows we’d seen there (Uncle Tupelo, The Lemonheads, The New Duncan Imperials, Billy Goat, etc.). It was sad to see it’s demise, but truth be told, outside of a few shows of interest, the late night DJ scene that had taken over the club wasn’t our bag. We resigned ourselves to think fondly of our crazy nights spent at the Hurricane and stored them in the memory bank with times at the Grand Emporium of yore. After months of rumors and speculations about what would become of this space, the mystery was solved when the owners of Jerry’s Ba
it Shop (Lenexa / Lee’s Summit) announced they had taken over the space with a vision of bringing it back around to the live sound. After a delay in procuring their liquor license, and a cancellation of the Pendergast show last week, they are up and running and kickin’ it off with one hell of a line-up!
It’s Over – You know em’, you love em’- Get your hands in the air ass-shakin’ boots on.
Whiskey Boots – Heather Lofflin and Amy Farrand. Two women, one badass raunchy, sexy, take no shit sound of vocals, a guitar and drums. We are big fans of these ladies here at Sad Dog HQ, and as they don’t play much, you gotta get yer’ fix when the getting’ is good.
The Afterparty – The Band met Gram Parsons and got in a fight with Whiskeytown…added some fine female vocalists to spice things up and called themselves The Afterparty.
This will be a juicy night of live music pups!

Oh My God, Bacon Shoe and Black Elk @ RECORD BAR
Bacon Shoe takes the stage once more. Hilarity will ensue. However, at last report Toine, aka John Ferguson, was traveling in Asia. Will Lethal D dare take the stage without his hype man or will Mr. Ruggles the bacon chef extraordinaire do double duty this eve? Not unlike Bacon Shoe, Chicago’s Oh My God has a show that must be seen live to truly be appreciated. They outfit their sound with drums, organ and bass creating a wall of sound uniquely their own. Black Elk hail from Portland Oregon mixing metal with punk. As one press clip cited… “as if The Jesus Lizard met Slayer”.

Be/Non and Dirty Faces @ THE BRICK
Be/Non hands down wins the award for most versatile band in KC. Beyond holding a steady fan base with their original classic rock, progressive original work, this uber-talented group of musicians can pull off just about any musical task set in front of them. I have seen them as the back up band for the Rockstar show at the Record Bar, where they nailed everything from Golden Earring’s “Radar Love”, to Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll”. They have taken on a T-Rex tribute as well as a rousing rendition of the entire Queen “Flash Gordon” album. These boys know how to have fun!

Patrice Pike (Full Band) @ DAVEY’S UPTOWN
$10adv / $12 DOS; 8pm door / 9pm show
While Patrice Pike is no stranger to the Davey’s stage, this time around she hits it like a Rockstar…well, almost. Although this hard-working Austin based singer-songwriter has a resume to be proud, it was her participation on the CBS reality television program “Rock Star Supernova” that has catapulted her name and face into the mainstream. For those unfamiliar: there was a “world-wide” search and 15 “Rockers” were picked to compete through live performances. The prize…lead singer of rock super group “Supernova”, made up of Tommy Lee (Motley Crue), Gilby Clark (producer / guitarist - Guns N’ Roses and Slash’s Snakepit) and Jason Newsted (Metallica). Although Patrice didn’t end up in front of “Supernova”, she held her own coming in above the top ten. For those of you shaking your heads, head to her site, give her music a listen and decide for yourself. For the rest of us, those of us who have been bitten by the “Rockstar” bug, we’ll have to wait and see how much we are really entice
d by a “Rockstar”.

UPCOMING RELEASES:
November 14, 2006 The Paybacks “Love, Not Reason” (Savage Jams Records)
Wendy and the boys kicked out another gem with their third release on Savage Jams Records. Never failing to bring the rock, this release is no exception. Danny Methric continues to tear it up on lead guitar, and while front woman Wendy Case is still shelling out her usual raw intensity, both vocally and lyrically, she lets more of that sexy Detroit soul rip than on past releases. In particular, the album’s seduction song “Painkiller”, which immediately turns the listener into a voyeur, bringing a bit of a blush to your cheeks. The Paybacks MySpace page touts, “Love, Not Reason insists that you drop your guard, max out the volume knob and enjoy the ride. Life is short; get your hands dirty, get your heart broken and don’t forget what Thomas Mann had to say about it: It is love, not reason, that is stronger than death.” Visit www.myspace.com/thepaybacks for more on the making of “Love, Not Reason.”

November 17, 2006 Crazy Talk CD Release show for “Let’s Get Rowdy” @ MIKE’S TAVERN

DVD PICK OF THE WEEK:
The Rolling Stones: Gimme Shelter (A Mayles Film Production, 1970)
This documentary follows the Rolling Stones 1968 American tour. It starts in New York City and concludes at what became the infamous free Altamont Speedway concert where the Hell’s Angels were mistakenly hired for security, and in the end killing a concert-goer. The footage from Altamont is amazing, intense and dumbfounding. The cast
includes Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, Keith Richards, Mick Taylor, Billy Wyman, Jerry Garcia, Gram Parsons, Grace Slick, Ike and Tina Turner and many more.=-jaq

JAQ’S & DI’S NOTES:
Ok, we outright apologize for what we are about to do...Season Pushing! But after seeing the Salvation Army pails appearing around the Plaza, all the talk of Thanksgiving plans, conversations of what we want in rock, and we'll be honest, a night of drawing a complete brain blank on what to write in our notes, we decided to send out a Holiday Wish List. And in consideration of our current list, it's going to take some time for some of you to get things rolling and we thought it only fair to give you some advance warning. So, as the cold weather creeps in and the sound of that damn Madonna Christmas song starts playing throughout the stores, we lay out our current Holiday Wish List!

AC/DC, Lucinda Williams, The Supersuckers, Lucero, Bobby Bare Jr. and the Pretenders to all play a one day gig at a venue of our choice, we decide the guestlist.

Sad Dog MySpace Profile Song of the Week: "River" by Whiskey Boots
www.myspace.com/saddogkc

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 10
It's Over, Whiskey Boots and The Afterparty @ THE HURRICANE
10pm; $7
A few months ago we received a phone call from our friend Roach letting us know that KC's Premiere Variety Show, The Donkey Show, scheduled for the Hurricane, would be the last night the establishment would be open. If there was any reservation about heading out that night, it quickly exited our minds and we went to get one last look at a venue that at one time was in our rotation for viewing live music. We went, we reminisced about all of the great shows we'd seen there (Uncle Tupelo, The Lemonheads, The New Duncan Imperials, Billy Goat, etc.). It was sad to see it's demise, but truth be told, outside of a few shows of interest, the late night DJ scene that had taken over the club wasn't our bag. We resigned ourselves to think fondly of our crazy nights spent at the Hurricane and stored them in the memory bank with times at the Grand Emporium of yore. After months of rumors and speculations about what would become of this space, the mystery was solved when the owners of Jerr
y's Ba
it Shop (Lenexa / Lee's Summit) announced they had taken over the space with a vision of bringing it back around to the live sound. After a delay in procuring their liquor license, and a cancellation of the Pendergast show last week, they are up and running and kickin' it off with one hell of a line-up!
It's Over – You know em', you love em'- Get your hands in the air ass-shakin' boots on.
Whiskey Boots – Heather Lofflin and Amy Farrand. Two women, one badass raunchy, sexy, take no shit sound of vocals, a guitar and drums. We are big fans of these ladies here at Sad Dog HQ, and as they don't play much, you gotta get yer' fix when the getting' is good.

Not unlike Bacon Shoe, Chicago's Oh My God has a show that must be seen live to truly be appreciated. They outfit their sound with drums, organ and bass creating a wall of sound uniquely their own. Black Elk hail from Portland Oregon mixing metal with punk. As one press clip cited… "as if The Jesus Lizard met Slayer".

Mixed bills like this one make the tail wag. The Lastcall girls have a country swagger backing some damn witty lyrics of life as a Midwest lass. The Throttlers are octane fueled rock-n-roll fury and Funhouse features some mighty KC musicians with Craig Flemming, Jay Zastoupil, Chico Thunder and Rob on skins tearing up the songs of The Stooges with a stage show to match.

Be/Non and Dirty Faces @ THE BRICK
Be/Non hands down wins the award for most versatile band in KC. Beyond holding a steady fan base with their original classic rock, progressive original work, this uber-talented group of musicians can pull off just about any musical task set in front of them. I have seen them as the back up band for the Rockstar show at the Record Bar, where they nailed everything from Golden Earring's "Radar Love", to Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll". They have taken on a T-Rex tribute as well as a rousing rendition of the entire Queen "Flash Gordon" album. These boys know how to have fun!

Patrice Pike (Full Band) @ DAVEY'S UPTOWN
$10adv / $12 DOS; 8pm door / 9pm show
While Patrice Pike is no stranger to the Davey's stage, this time around she hits it like a Rockstar…well, almost. Although this hard-working Austin based singer-songwriter has a resume to be proud, it was her participation on the CBS reality television program "Rock Star Supernova" that has catapulted her name and face into the mainstream. For those unfamiliar: there was a "world-wide" search and 15 "Rockers" were picked to compete through live performances. The prize…lead singer of rock super group "Supernova", made up of Tommy Lee (Motley Crue), Gilby Clark (producer / guitarist - Guns N' Roses and Slash's Snakepit) and Jason Newsted (Metallica). Although Patrice didn't end up in front of "Supernova", she held her own coming in above the top ten. For those of you shaking your heads, head to her site, give her music a listen and decide for yourself. For the rest of us, those of us who have been bitten by the "Rockstar" bug, we'll have to wait and see how much we are really
entice
d by a "Rockstar".

UPCOMING RELEASES:
November 14, 2006 The Paybacks "Love, Not Reason" (Savage Jams Records)
Wendy and the boys kicked out another gem with their third release on Savage Jams Records. Never failing to bring the rock, this release is no exception. Danny Methric continues to tear it up on lead guitar, and while front woman Wendy Case is still shelling out her usual raw intensity, both vocally and lyrically, she lets more of that sexy Detroit soul rip than on past releases. In particular, the album's seduction song "Painkiller", which immediately turns the listener into a voyeur, bringing a bit of a blush to your cheeks. The Paybacks MySpace page touts, "Love, Not Reason insists that you drop your guard, max out the volume knob and enjoy the ride. Life is short; get your hands dirty, get your heart broken and don't forget what Thomas Mann had to say about it: It is love, not reason, that is stronger than death." Visit www.myspace.com/thepaybacks for more on the making of "Love, Not Reason."

November 17, 2006 Crazy Talk CD Release show for "Let's Get Rowdy" @ MIKE'S TAVERN

DVD PICK OF THE WEEK:
The Rolling Stones: Gimme Shelter (A Mayles Film Production, 1970)
This documentary follows the Rolling Stones 1968 American tour. It starts in New York City and concludes at what became the infamous free Altamont Speedway concert where the Hell's Angels were mistakenly hired for security, and in the end killing a concert-goer.

JAQ'S & DI'S NOTES:

Sad Dog MySpace Profile Song of the Week: Gods, Guns and Glory by The Gaslights

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3
In The Pines CD Release Show w/ Black Christmas @ RECORD BAR
You cant beat this deal. Tonight marks the release of In the Pines new CD For Love Instead. They describe their sound as indie, acoustic rock, which doesnt begin to do them justice. They are a multi-layered outfit fixed to woo and surprise incorporating 6- string guitar, 4-string acoustic bass, violin, viola, percussion, electric guitar and vocals. This isnt a band to play out too frequently, so its wise to catch their show when the opportunity arises. Cover tonight is $12 but includes a voucher for a copy of their new CD. Brilliant. Pick up this weeks Preview Section of The Kansas City Star for more on In The Pines and visit their MySpace page for a taste of their new CD.

Bettye LaVette @ FOLLY THEATRE
The Hurricane is a place you might never think youd see one of the reigning queens of soul. But it was the perfect venue for the Bettye LaVette performance we saw last year. She exudes a raw emotion and iron grit that could hold court in any rock-n-roll venue. This time through she plays the Folly but no doubt this powerhouse will make the walls shake with the experience of her 40 years of performance. While we are on the topic of Ms. LaVette, her 2005 release Ive Got My Own Hell to Raise would make a great stocking stuffer for that music fan on your list. On this CD she covers 10 songs by some of the greatest female artists of our time giving them new life as only she can.

The Devil and Daniel Johnston (2005)
This is a remarkable portrait of a commercially unrecognized singer/songwriter, visual artist and amateur film maker and his struggle with manic depression. The film is the winner of two awards at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival and has received endless rave reviews. While never receiving commercial success Johnstons songs have been recorded and/or performed by over150 artists including Tom Waits, Pearl Jam, Beck, Wilco, Yo La Tengo, Teenage Fanclub, Mercury Rev and the Flaming Lips. It was Yo La Tengos performance of Speeding Motorcycle on 1990s Fakebook that I first was introduced to Johnstons songwriting. Johnston is an endearing character but despite the subject matter this documentary is put together in such a way that makes it incredibly interesting to watch and one that can only be created by a filmmaker who truly loves his subject. di

Hustle and Flow (2005): The story of Djay (Terrance Dashon Howard), a Memphis pimp and hustler with a dream to make it as a rapper. The film spawned the tune Its Hard Out Here for a Pimp (Academy Award nomination for Best Song); garnered an Academy Award Actor in a Leading Role nomination for Terrance Howard; and somehow manages to take a character, that in most cases would not evoke sympathy, and turn him into an odd brand of hero. -jaq

Kill Your Idols (2004)
Its intriguing for me when the story unfolds and the artists succinctly explain the motivation and where their art comes from. I was especially pleased earlier this year while watching Kill Your Idols. The film focuses on the no wave era and the bands behind this little known movement of 70s and early 80s New York City. In line with punk rock ethos, these bands went one-step further abandoning music derived from blues, to create music that referenced nothing else. While using traditional rock-n-roll instruments many didnt even consider what they did music or entertainment. Rather releasing short, brief outbursts of anti-music. The film begins with interviews with the genres originators, Teenage Jesus & The Jerks, Suicide, Theoretical Girls, and Swan, followed by interviews with Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth who was significantly influenced by no wave. Interviews with newer artists, considering themselves inline with this earlier movement follows. Already informative the f
ilm becomes incredibly interesting when these earlier artists and the idols of many current day bands unleash their contempt for these artists of today and their lack of originality. Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Black Dice and Liar are just a few that take a cinematic tongue lashing.. di

Metallica: Some Kind of Monster (2004): Documentarians Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky hit gold when they were allowed all access into the Metallica camp for part of 2001 thru 2003 during the recording of St. Anger. This film is a real life rockstar soap opera, Hetfield spends 5 months in rehab, Newstad is replaced on bass, group therapy, total meltdown, naked-emotion, super-drama. Its raw, its ballsy and its FN Metallica! -jaq

Be Here to Love Me: A Film about Townes Van Zandt (2004).
This DVD is loaded for bear, with rare recorded performances, interviews with family, friends and his more famous colleagues. More than that, its a portrait of a person battling demons while understanding what hes meant to do - create. Townes died in 1997 shortly after receiving his first major recording deal in 1996 set to be produced by Sonic Youths Steve Shelley (his previous recordings were released by a friend out of an apartment). My favorite songwriter Billy Joe Shaver (who Johnny Cash called his favorite) says of Townes As far as I was concerned, he was the best songwriter that ever lived, and thats it. While his style is similar but not quite country, folk, or blues his songs were covered by bands as diverse as the Meat Puppets, Mudhoney and Norah Jones. I imagine its the lucidity of his words that make the songs so capable of crossing genres. His most recognized song Pancho & Lefty was made popular by Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard. A song I love so much I named
two kittens I adopted Pancho and Lefty. His story is one of a tortured soul battling mental illness and addiction while doing only what hes able to do, write music. Its likely those aspects of his life that triggered him to say, blow everything offget a guitar, and go. "Aloneness is a state of being, whereas loneliness is a state of feeling. It's like the difference between being broke and being poor." - Townes Van Zandt di

We Jam Econo: The Story of the Minutemen (2005)
We Jam Econo is the story of Mike Watt (bass), D. Boon (guitar and vocals) and George Hurly (drums) and their genre transcending 80s punk influenced San Pedro band the Minutemen. Watt tells the story of the Minutemen, as he travels San Pedro in his van The Old Boat taking viewers on a tour through time. This documentary is loaded with interviews by musicians, friends, artists, writers and music industry folk, who were part of the California punk scene during the emergence of the Minutemen. And the icing on the cake is made up of the live performances, a highlight being the 1985 Hollywood, CA Acoustic Blowout performance of I Felt Like A Gringo. This performance breaks it all down and exposes the raw talent of these three Pedro boys. -jaq

New York Doll (2005)
This is not your standard rock-n-roll historical biography. Theres a story here that continues throughout the documentary and a tender one at that. It covers the rise and near fall of a great rock-n-roll band, the New York Dolls that found its demise in drugs and alcohol. The real paradox comes in the telling of the films focus, bassist Arthur Killer Kane. Its something to see a man donning fishnets and lipstick living rock-n-roll debauchery then becoming a librarian at the L.A. Family History Library and a member of the Mormon Church. Hes an endearing character that faced heartbreak, spiritual re-birth and fulfillment of his dream as he journeys to rejoin the Dolls for a reunion show at Morrisseys Meltdown in London, UK 2004. Director Greg Whiteley allows Kane to tell his own story supported by comments of musicians and friends. As tragic as his story becomes theres a real joy in watching someone who possesses such genuine honesty and candor. If you are a fan of the New Y
ork Dolls or simply love a good documentary go ahead and purchase this one for your collection. di

Walk the Line (2005): When it hit the theatres the buzz was all about Walk The Line, the screen portrayal of two people, and what might be one of the greatest love storys of all time, Johnny Cash and June Carter. Directed by James Mangold and based on Cashs books Man In Black and Cash The Autobiography, this film was hyped to the hilt. But any concerns fans might have had entering the theatre, were wiped clear by their exit. Joaquin Phoenix (Johnny) and Reece Witherspoon (June Carter) both nailed their performances garnering Golden Globes and Oscars between the two. -jaq

Jandek on Corwood (2003)
I came across mention of this enigma some time ago, discussed in a piece on Kurt Cobain. The brief reference on his solitary existence got me intrigued so I hopped online and found one lone website. Since the release of this film many more websites have popped up, all attempting to explain the mystery behind the sound and the man.
He released his first record Ready for the House in 1978 and over the past twenty-five+ years has released 31 more records, DIY, thru Corwood Industries, of which he is the sole proprietor. He is one of the most prolific artists of our time and has gone completely unrecognized by the masses. Why? His music is inaccessible and un-commercial. A voice and guitar, out of tune, or is it? Sometimes a cappella, sometimes with percussion and on a few occasions, with accompanying vocal or player, he refuses to discuss or credit. Hes given one interview by phone and another by random chance that went without any discussion of the music or who Jandek is. There have been recent reports of pop up performances. Photographs of him are obscured and unreferenced. The documentary is one of the most interesting Ive seen. The music is.eerie. It runs throughout the documentary and it is difficult stuff. What is more interesting is listening to the perceptions of fans, journalists and DJs speculat
ing on his persona and sound. There is romanticism in his complete freedom of the machine and his appearance to not impress. Self-distributed from a PO Box in Houston, TX, much like his music he is completely non-representational of any standard. -di

DiG! (2005)
Shot over the course of seven years, this film chronicles the story of two friends, Anton Newcombe of Brian Jonestown Massacre and Courtney Taylor of the Dandy Warhols, as they set out to create a music revolution in the face of the dollar driven music industry. Narrated by Courtney Taylor the film gives equal time to each bands story, The Dandy Warhols experiencing a fair amount of success abroad and the Brian Jonestown Massacre, while prolific, is challenged by many self installed roadblocks. The relationship between the bands is what makes this story interesting. While a degree of mutual respect remains throughout, the story unfolds into a full-on rivalry and even a gentle death threat. This DVD also has the very cool zoom feature, when cued you can access additional footage. Fans of the rockumentary genre would be wise to pick it up regardless of whether or not you like the bands. Anton Newcombes tortured genius persona alone makes it worth it. -di
