Whoa-oa-oa! I Feel Good!
IN TRIBUTE:
Music has to possess soul or it's just simply not worth much. While the soul of music is something found by the listener and the different interpretations is something that keeps this world of music we love so dearly here at Sad Dog, so interesting. But very few can argue that the man called the Godfather of Soul, Mr. James Brown, forged the way for pop music and he defines the spirit that keeps music coming, giving way to each new generation of sound. He influenced many and he knew it as he wrote in his autobiography, "I taught them everything they know but not everything I know". His fancy moves and untiring touring can give inspiration to all.

The Rich Boys, Pendergast and Wood Roses @ THE BRICK
Meow!!! Hearing the buzz around town, I have been in the market for a Rich Boys show. And being newbie to this group of misfits, I did a bit o' research on the boys and seemed to hit a MySpace time warp that shot me back to circa 1970's CBGB's. The Rich Boys wear their influences on their sleeve (Iggy Pop and the Stooges, Lou Reed and The New York Dolls) and borrow, or steal…I don't know this crew yet, their look from the Ramones. They even go so far as to recreate the Ramonesque brick wall backed photos, which don the covers of "Rocket to Russia" and "Hey Ho Let's Go – Anthology".
Performing with The Rich Boys this eve is the one and only badass Americana rock ensemble Pendergast. There is no denying Tony Ladesich's outstanding penchant for lyric writing, and with the exceptional musicianship of Mike Rooney (guitar), Mike Meyers (drums) and Rich Burgess (bass), you will be on your feet singing along with every tune, and like the rest of us, anxiously awaiting the release of their new album.
Wood Roses is yet another band I have yet to see and has sparked my curiosity. Members include Mike McCoy (Cher U.K., Black Rabbits), Dan Cook (Bubble Boys) on bass, Bill Colburn (the Eudoras) on drums and DJ Clem (Wylde Chipmunk and the Cuddly Poos) on mandolin and pedal steel.
No rest for the weary it seems. New Years Eve will be a full weekend affair this year.

My new favorite Kansas City band of 2006 -Crazy Talk- may be the perfect band to help you welcome in the New Year if you want it to start with a heavy dose of rock-n-roll. Their 2006 release "Let's Get Rowdy" made my Top Ten of 2006 and by all indications it will continue to hold a top spot as we make our way into the new year. Pitch 2006 Best Live Band Winner The Last of the V8's is just the spectacle expected on New Years Eve featuring former members of two Sad Dog favs The Ramalamas and Cretin 66! -di

Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival recently released their initial list of confirmed bands. And much to our surprise, astonishment and absolute pleasure, hidden among the jam band flavors du jour, sits Austin's own Alejandro Escovedo himself. Out with a new album this year "The Boxing Mirror", which made it on both of the Sad Dog ladies Top 10 of 2006 list, it seems Al is feelin' good and hittin' the festival scene.
VIP Passes and 4-Day Tickets at discounted Early-Bird prices for Wakarusa 2007 will be available for purchase Friday, January 12th at 10:00 a.m.
And for all you musicians who want to get your paws on a Waka 2007 stage visit ww.wakawinterclassic.com for details. The Waka Winter Classic is a 19-city audience voted competition for a chance to play the Wakarusa Festival. The tour will be in Kansas City at Davey's Uptown January 19, 2007 and Lawrence, KS at The Bottleneck January 26, 2007.

DI'S NOTES:
I love Christmas presents and I love them even more in the form of a gift card. Santa was good to me and my stocking was loaded this year and I picked up some gems this week. First up, Flamin Groovies "Groovies Greatest Grooves". Back in the late 80's a friend of mine gave me a copy he recorded to a cassette tape. I literally wore that thing out. I had all but forgotten about this band from San Francisco until October when I saw the monster loud Lawrence, KS pop rockers Dead Girl Ruin Everything and their cover of the dandy "Shake Some Action" robbed my bleeding ears with utter delight. I've spent the last couple days getting reacquainted to these pop-rock-n-roll gents. Founded in 1965 and first known as the Chosen Few, then the Lost and Found and by late 1966 they found their footing as the Flamin Groovies and continued as such through the 70's. Never reaching stardom in America and barely recognized in their hometown, they possess the same rock-n-roll spirit as the Stones o
r Chuc
k Berry…that certain groove that makes you want to turn it up until the windows shake and dare to sing out loud--in public even. This near perfect little CD is mostly originals with a few well chosen covers including "There's a Place" by Lennon/McCartney and "Absolutely Sweet" by Dylan.
