Whoa-oa-oa! I Feel Good!

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

IN TRIBUTE:
Music has to possess soul or it's just simply not worth much. While the soul of music is something found by the listener and the different interpretations is something that keeps this world of music we love so dearly here at Sad Dog, so interesting. But very few can argue that the man called the Godfather of Soul, Mr. James Brown, forged the way for pop music and he defines the spirit that keeps music coming, giving way to each new generation of sound. He influenced many and he knew it as he wrote in his autobiography, "I taught them everything they know but not everything I know". His fancy moves and untiring touring can give inspiration to all.
James Brown 1933-2006 R.I.P. Soul Brother No. 1

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 30
The Rich Boys, Pendergast and Wood Roses @ THE BRICK
Meow!!! Hearing the buzz around town, I have been in the market for a Rich Boys show. And being newbie to this group of misfits, I did a bit o' research on the boys and seemed to hit a MySpace time warp that shot me back to circa 1970's CBGB's. The Rich Boys wear their influences on their sleeve (Iggy Pop and the Stooges, Lou Reed and The New York Dolls) and borrow, or steal…I don't know this crew yet, their look from the Ramones. They even go so far as to recreate the Ramonesque brick wall backed photos, which don the covers of "Rocket to Russia" and "Hey Ho Let's Go – Anthology".
Performing with The Rich Boys this eve is the one and only badass Americana rock ensemble Pendergast. There is no denying Tony Ladesich's outstanding penchant for lyric writing, and with the exceptional musicianship of Mike Rooney (guitar), Mike Meyers (drums) and Rich Burgess (bass), you will be on your feet singing along with every tune, and like the rest of us, anxiously awaiting the release of their new album.
Wood Roses is yet another band I have yet to see and has sparked my curiosity. Members include Mike McCoy (Cher U.K., Black Rabbits), Dan Cook (Bubble Boys) on bass, Bill Colburn (the Eudoras) on drums and DJ Clem (Wylde Chipmunk and the Cuddly Poos) on mandolin and pedal steel.
No rest for the weary it seems. New Years Eve will be a full weekend affair this year.

Wakarusa Music and Camping Festival recently released their initial list of confirmed bands. And much to our surprise, astonishment and absolute pleasure, hidden among the jam band flavors du jour, sits Austin's own Alejandro Escovedo himself. Out with a new album this year "The Boxing Mirror", which made it on both of the Sad Dog ladies Top 10 of 2006 list, it seems Al is feelin' good and hittin' the festival scene.
VIP Passes and 4-Day Tickets at discounted Early-Bird prices for Wakarusa 2007 will be available for purchase Friday, January 12th at 10:00 a.m.
And for all you musicians who want to get your paws on a Waka 2007 stage visit ww.wakawinterclassic.com for details. The Waka Winter Classic is a 19-city audience voted competition for a chance to play the Wakarusa Festival. The tour will be in Kansas City at Davey's Uptown January 19, 2007 and Lawrence, KS at The Bottleneck January 26, 2007.

DI'S NOTES:
I love Christmas presents and I love them even more in the form of a gift card. Santa was good to me and my stocking was loaded this year and I picked up some gems this week. First up, Flamin Groovies "Groovies Greatest Grooves". Back in the late 80's a friend of mine gave me a copy he recorded to a cassette tape. I literally wore that thing out. I had all but forgotten about this band from San Francisco until October when I saw the monster loud Lawrence, KS pop rockers Dead Girl Ruin Everything and their cover of the dandy "Shake Some Action" robbed my bleeding ears with utter delight. I've spent the last couple days getting reacquainted to these pop-rock-n-roll gents. Founded in 1965 and first known as the Chosen Few, then the Lost and Found and by late 1966 they found their footing as the Flamin Groovies and continued as such through the 70's. Never reaching stardom in America and barely recognized in their hometown, they possess the same rock-n-roll spirit as the Stones o
r Chuc
k Berry…that certain groove that makes you want to turn it up until the windows shake and dare to sing out loud--in public even. This near perfect little CD is mostly originals with a few well chosen covers including "There's a Place" by Lennon/McCartney and "Absolutely Sweet" by Dylan.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 23
Honeywagen, Gregg Todt and Gary Cloud @ THE BRICK
Power pop rock quartet Honeywagen never fails to please and will be shellin' out tunes off of their fine 2006 release "Payday". Gregg Todt hails from one of Sad Dog and KC's favorite "in your face" rock bands Federation of Horsepower, and although I have not seen him solo, I know you can't go wrong picking a venue where Gregg is onstage. Not to mention he sites a line from one of my favorite Supersuckers songs on his Myspace page, "I'm on a hell bound trail…I'm born with a tail". Then there is Gary Cloud of The Broken Only's and cowpunk band Boot Hill, who has been flying a bit below the KC live music radar lately, but is one hell of a rock n' country singer / songwriter. -jaq

DVD PICK OF THE WEEK:
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Set in the 1920's, This Coen brother's (The Big Lebowski, Raising Arizona, Fargo) film tells the tale of three convicts (George Clooney, John Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson) who break out of prison and head out on a Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. Attempting to fly under the radar of the law, these convicts encounter head on collisions with the supernatural, unknowingly form a band called the Soggy Bottom Boys and record a hit single. Produced by T Bone Burnett, the O Brother soundtrack includes Allison Krauss, Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris, Ralph Stanley and The Stanley Brothers and won a Grammy in 2001 for Album of the Year.

JAQ'S & DI'S NOTES:
Happy Holiday Pups!
If you truly crave some holiday laughter and cheer, go out and purchase "Christmas In Ocala" by Truckstop Honeymoon and play the title track at the family dinner instead of "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus".
Here's a little taste:
"It's Christmas in Ocala, underneath the mistletoe. With your sister's boyfriend and your sister don't know. He's got a pretty smile and fresh can of chew. And if he's got a dip in, he ain't kissin' you."
The album also features other gems like "Walk of Shame", "Down Wind from the Refinery" and "Mama's Moving Back". This album is a hoot and a must add to any CD collection.

Sad Dog MySpace Profile Song of the Week: "Mamacita" by The Ants
www.myspace.com/saddogkc

The ladies of Sad Dog want to send out a mighty howl of thanks to Tim Finn of The Kansas City Star for letting us share some of our favorite albums of the year this week in the Preview's "The Year In Music…" feature. If you haven't had a chance to take a peek, it's well worth some time spent perusing over a cuppa joe. Along with our picks you get the top 10 from Bill Brownlee (KC Star Contributing Reviewer and editor of There Stands the Glass Blog), Bill Shapiro (Host of KCUR's Cyprus Avenue), Steve Tulipana (Roman Numerals and Co-Owner of Recordbar), Scott Burnett (Minnow Records), Robert Moore (Host of KCUR's Sonic Spectrum) and many, many more. You can't get a more eclectic grouping of album favs from 2006. Make your list and check it twice--be you naughty or nice!

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 15
Rural Grit Allstars, Experimental Instrumental Orchestra (EIO), Dirty Mae @ DAVEY'S UPTOWN
Folk, acoustic, musical enlightenment is what this line-up has to offer. Although we don't have confirmation on who exactly makes up the Rural Grit Allstars, the name in itself lends us to believe that it's made up of musicians who frequent the free wheelin' jump in and join the party Rural Grit Happy Hour held every Monday evening at The Brick.
EIO is quite a trio made up of Amy Farrand (Whiskeyboots, Shotgun Idols, American Catastrophe), Mark Smeltzer and J. Howell. With their makeshift instruments in tow (they create all their own instruments from pots, pans and any ol' piece of junk that strikes their fancy) they create haunting songs onstage, some they never again revisit. They recently performed on the BBC and made a point to scour the streets of London, making all of their instruments from discarded British goods.
Dirty Mae is a side project for David Regnier, Chris Devictor and Sarah Carpenter, members of KC's experimental, country, indie group The Afterparty.

"We have a rare Kansas City weekend show this Friday at the Record Bar in Olde Westport...just on the other side of the Ace Hardware off SW Trafficway, west of the Flea Market, east of Priscilla's, south of the Sprint Center, north of new Johnson County DA Phill Kline's office. If we don't put 100 bodies in the bar Friday night, Sean (our drummer) is going to cut off his right hand. That's the deal. It's come down to this. Kansas City has always been kind to us, kind of. Let's hope for the best this Friday."

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 16
Scroat Belly @ DAVEY'S UPTOWN
10:30pm; $12 advance
Back in October Scroat Belly played their first reunion show at The Replay in Lawrence Kansas. At that time our friend Killabeas did a guest writing piece for us on the band we all have loved so much. This piece she wrote brought back a lot of memories from the heyday that became even more vivid once we caught that Replay show. We purchased our advance tickets the other day and the list is getting long and mighty for this one. Tickets are still available at $12 advance – that means get 'em Friday kids.
October 19th; by guest writer Killabeas
Yeah- yeah- they are country-punk, but they are also rock/soul/bluegrass/metal and more - way more. The labels could never convey that when you are listening to these smilin' maniacs, you might flashback: to hangin' out with those gearheads in the parking lot of the county fair, the ones talkin' shit, their FFA jackets torn up and covered in Black Flag patches. Those guys that would grab you into their truck and meet up with that sweet GTO on the red dirt road.... cruisin' and then cutthroat racin'... blastin' Motorhead the whole time. And after all that High Plains danger, you end up at some junkyard, watchin' a meteor shower. All while those boys had impromptu target practice with the rusty, Bud cans and one surprises you with a bracelet made of the pull tabs. Then a couple starts singin' some creepy hymn from church and you feel really, really lucky --- Hell yeah!! Scroat Belly is point-blank a Kansas classic; they are fast/slow/sweet/salty/melodic/chaotic and leave their
guts o
n the stage. If you, the music fan, have been apathetic or discouraged, if you have been brainwashed by Clear Channel, you will be revived! And for those on probation (patchouli-drenched couple 3 yrs ago at Split Lip show, front row while The Derita Sisters were kickin' ass as openers, horrified and hands over ears for entire set), your attendance is mandatory! Everyone else, I know you'll be there - let's support this homegrown, legendary band and show them how much we've missed 'em. Where are my manners? Scroat Belly: the sounds are scrumptious and lyrics quite delightful, you simply must join us on the patio - if you don't, you will be remiss, goddamnit!!

"Though ostensibly an intimate look at the Dixie Chicks after their 2003 anti-Bush remark, the film archives broader relevance by exploring how media, politics and celebrities intertwine". – Rotten Tomatoes

Late Night Theater: A Scary Carrie Christmas Carol
Written by Phil Kinen, Directed by Phil Kinen and Ron Megee
"Based on the best-selling novel Carrie, by horror legend Steven King. Scary Carrie is the story of spooky introvert Carrie White, a high school nobody victimized at school by evil varsity populantes and at home by a fanatical scripture-abusing mother." -LNT
Hilarity is sure to ensue as it always does with a LNT production.
