Don't Eat the Yellow Snow!!!

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

Sad Dog MySpace Profile Song of the Week: "Salt Truck" Eleni Mandell
We are accustomed to showcasing a tune from KC artists on our MySpace page, but with Mother Nature spitting snow and ice the last few weeks, this song off of Eleni's new album "Miracle of Five" seemed most fitting.

The Weary Boys and Donnie Walker Red @ DAVEY'S UPTOWN
Just got the good word on The Weary Boys from a friend up in Minneapolis who had the pleasure of checking them out on Wednesday night. He has discerning tastes but gave the seal of approval on their sound and show and mentioned that these boys from Austin, TX have a fiddler player resembling Charles Manson who appropriately "plays like mad". Not to mention they have shared bills with a hefty dose of some of my favorite artists – from Willie Nelson to Split Lip Rayfield. -di

It's a Monday night in the dead of winter but if there were ever a reason to get out on such a night this is it. It's a hard rock affair at The Hurricane tonight. Just like the old days….the really old days. Broken Teeth hails from Austin, TX but they aren't the usual suspects from the music city to the South. There's no denying the influence of AC/DC and their shows get the hair flying. Broken Teeth, features frontman extraordinaire Jason McMaster of Dangerous Toys.

JAQ & DI'S NOTES:
When You Wish Upon a Star
In the January 4-10, 2007 edition of The Pitch weekly, Jason Harper, for his Wayward Son section, "collected some new Year's wishes, predictions, fears and general future-oriented blather from people in and around the scene." The ladies, and Max, of Sad Dog put their paws together and came up with the following wishes: "A Cretin 66 reunion show; long-awaited recordings by Federation of Horsepower, Whiskey Boots and Pendergast; free instruments for everyone; more cowbell; a rock-and-roll dog park; good health to Kirk Rundstrom and peace, love and rock and roll for everyone." It seems that wishes do come true as we have received word this week that Federation of Horsepower, Whiskey Boots and Pendergast will be releasing albums over the next couple of months.
Pendergast will release "Between the Bottle and the Pulpit", Friday, March 2, 2007, with a full weekend of record release shows starting with a Friday in-store at Needmore discs then a hot rock show at Davey's Uptown with Brother Trucker and Dead Girls Ruin Everything.

Whiskey Boots: This dynamic duo, made up of Heather Lofflin (Diamond Heart Club, Honeybaby) and Amy Farrand (Shot Gun Idols, American Catastrophe, EIO, Sister Mary Rotten Crotch), touched base this week, and bless their ever-lovin' hearts, are sending us a promo copy of their new recording as we speak. You will have a full review once the disc hits the mailbox and we can tear ourselves away from the tunes long enough to write.

www.myspace.com/whiskeyboots

Federation of Horsepower: These boys know how to woo us with their in-your-face rock and roll. The highly anticipated "Stay Down" (Kafka the Dog Records) will be available in March. Along with the new album FOHP is in the process of shooting a video for their song "Hot Rails".

The Wakarusa Music Festival will be traveling to 19 cities this winter in a quest to locate the best and brightest musicians the country has to offer. At every stop on the tour, several bands will compete in a regional talent showcase. The winner of each talent showcase will receive an invitation to play at Wakarusa 2007. The winners in each city will also have their music featured on the Wakarusa website and will compete in an online talent showcase. The three bands that receive the most votes in the online competition will get to play the Revival stage at the festival. Tonight at Davey's is the local Kansas City stop for the competition.

This is the kind of line-up made for local rock fans. I caught Federation of Horsepower last Sunday night at Knuckleheads…not the easiest of places to make it to on a wintery weather night. But, a small and mighty of us made it out for the show and I'm surely convinced that bad weather and small crowds make for some of the best shows as proven by the boys of FOHP. Tonight they have the bad-ass-make-you-wanna-be-one broads of Whiskey Boots featuring Heather Lofflin of Honeybaby and Amy Farrand of American Catastrophe, Sister Mary Rotten Crotch, EIO and Shotgun Idols (how does she have time to eat). I'm super excited to see Diamond Heart Club for the first time with the aforementioned Heather Loffin and Mark Hennessey of Paw. -di

OTHER NEWS:
Wag on our Wayward Sons!
Wow – we here at Sad Dog HQ are possibly scoring on two off our Sad Dog Wish List for 2007. First news of the upcoming Federation of Horsepower release and now this!
Well we were hoping for a "Rock-n-Roll Dog Park" but those things can't be born they have to be cultivated. Let's make it happen! Read on….
There is a much anticipated off-leash dog park proposed for the Waldo/Brookside area. There is a meeting on Thursday, January 25th @ 6:00 pm at Broadway United Methodist Church- located on the corner of 74th street and Wornall. These proposals are close to being submitted to Parks & Rec and a show of support from the community is bound to make this happen! So if you don't have any plans and would love to save a trip to Midtown or Shawnee Mission for some canine play, come to the meeting and support the park! Pass it on!

DVD OF THE WEEK:
The Howlin' Wolf Story (2003)
Blues legend Howlin' Wolf has been an influence on countless musicians of every stripe (including Keith Richards). But what do we know of his life? Well, it's all here in this fascinating documentary -- Howlin' Wolf's career back to its roots, and his epic struggle to get his music across to a wider audience. Director Don McGlynn has exhumed a wealth of material from the vaults, much of which has never previously been made public. - Netflix

JAQ'S NOTES:
The Grand Illusion, Too Much Time On My Hands, Lorelei, Come Sail Away, The Best of Times, Babe…you know where I'm going with this. "The jig is up, the news is out", I saw Styx this week. And, much to my surprise, dismay and disbelief, I rocked out! I was in Orlando for a work conference last weekend. My life had been void of live music for close to a week, I was in a suit all day coordinating an event and we were invited to one of the conference evening concerts, Styx. I needed a release, and next thing I knew, I was on my feet belting out the words as if I was transported back to the 1970's and the arena rock hay day. I think my hair even began to feather. For every excuse I can come up with, there remains only one truth…for that hour and a half, I dug it! Thankfully they didn't go 80's on me and play Mr. Roboto, as that would have ruined the entire experience. However, I did have to endure the arena rock band reunion tradition, the rock medley, which kicked off with a Robo
to tea
ser. Once I made it through the medley, I was hooked right up to the Renegade finale. It must have been somewhere around the mid-to-late seventies, in a rural town south of KC, and I was just a little pup, that I was first introduced to Styx. My cousin was in high school and would "road-trip" it to KC to see bands like REO and ELO. At home she would load the turntable with Fleetwood Mac, Meatloaf, and yes, Styx. I would beg her to take me with her to the rock shows but had to settle on listening to the albums. Along with Grand Illusion I can recall he words to most of Rumors and Bat Out of Hell as well. For those of you who understand the flashback, and feel you might need a dose yourself, Styx will be in KC in May. But don't look for me…I think one Styx flashback and an iTunes download of Renegade is plenty.

DI'S NOTES:
Last week I had to sit down with my boss and co-worker to come up with our "measurable objectives" for the year '07-08. Because I'm in the business of producing events for a non-profit it's a tired game of repeating the same goals year to year – meeting budget. This year I decided to shake it up a bit and decided to suggest a measurable objective (goal) that meant something. "Let's produce green meetings and events" meaning we would limit or extinguish our waste at large group gatherings. I'm tired of it, you're tired of it…global warming, rising costs of energy….it's all about consuming. Okay, let's just stop, or least slow down. Monday as I was flipping through one of the pubs that arrives in my mail (Harp Magazine Dec. 06) I was excited to see that legendary indie-rock label Sub-Pop Records had decided to go entirely green in their use of energy. 100% of their energy use is now offset by renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. How cool and forward thinking i
s that
? But let's be honest. We all want our rock. The venues we visit and the recordings we purchase in all their packaging glory is something that we must have. I'm willing to go with the energy saving light bulbs and throw on my long underwear under that fancy new Federation of Horsepower t-shirt I just bought to save on a bit of the heating costs. That may level out my consumerism just a bit. If a small business like Sub Pop can do it why can't the giants? Read more here:

Nothing says fu*k winter like two of KC's greatest rock bands under one woof! Just what the doctor ordered to cure the winter blues…well that and a taste of whisky or two. Federation of Horsepower will be shooting a video for their song "Hot Rails". That won't slow the show down however. Both bands will be playing full sets. And even more good news tonight, we hear FOHP's new record "Stay Down" is near completion and we can expect a release sometime in March! Looks like some one was reading Sad Dog's wish list for 2007. HEADS UP:
Lost Highway Records will release Lucinda Williams' "West", February 13th, her first album of all original material since her 2003 release "World Without Tears". One new track from the album "Are You Alright?" is available for download at iTunes. If you visit Lost Highway Records and complete a line from the "Are You Alright?" you can be registered to win tickets to her Radio City Music hall show on March 23rd. Hell yes! I can honestly say my day has come to win something dynamite as I have only won a couple of contests in my life, one in the 80's which garnered me the Vision Quest soundtrack on vinyl. WhooHooo! Seriously, I am due!
For those of you who have somehow missed my rants about Lucinda, I borrowed a quote from Relix Magazine describing her sound, "…she's Iggy Pop with demon energy, Neil Young with better poetry, Lou Reed with more defined arms and, according to Elvis Costello, Keith Richards in a feminine form."
Some tour dates have been set but so far no stop in KC. More dates will be added so keep your fingers crossed. -jaq

"Chronicling the life, death and musical legacy of Thin Lizzy's leader Philip Lynott, this illuminating retrospective includes interviews with the doomed rocker, blistering concert footage, TV clips and classic music videos. Stay tuned in the weeks to come for a review!

JAQ'S NOTE'S:
"Rockers" (1977)
This flick is a "must see" for anyone who has ever felt the love of Reggae music. "Reggae music is the product of a single neighborhood: the 'yards' of West Kingston, comprising the poorest section of Jamaica's capital city." Fueled by the Rastafarian faith, which "stresses universal love, (One Love), rather than anti-white and anti-establishment violence," Reggae music emerged as a voice for the Rastafarian culture.
Shot in 1977, "Rockers" is the story of Rasta Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, a Reggae drummer, who picks up the trade of record distributor to make ends meet. In the 1960's and 70's radio government controlled radio "was not inclined to play 'low-class' music. For this reason Reggae artists relied on Sound Systems, mobile discotheques, to get their music to the people. Record distributors during this time in Jamaica literally rode bicycles and motorbikes from Sound System to roadside record stores peddling the latest 45's. In this "steal from the rich to feed the poor" story, Horsemouth is robbed and in turn reaches out to his musician friends to rob the robbers. The storyline exists only to offer a track to share with the audience an in-depth look at the culture and climate in which Reggae thrived in the 1970's.
All of the actors in the film are / were actual musicians on the reggae scene. Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace was considered one of Jamaica's greatest drummers. Other artists/actors include saxophonist Richard "Dirty Harry" Hall; Jacob Miller of Inner Circle; Winston "Burning Spear" Rodney; L. Jack Ruby, the leading producer of reggae music; Peter Tosh, one of the world's most popular reggae artists; Bunny Wailer, who along with Peter Tosh and Bob Marley made up the pioneer reggae group "The Wailers"; and many more. In fact, the names of musicians acting in this film can be found on most any reggae album to date.
The dialect of the Rastafarians is almost indiscernible without the aid of subtitles. The beauty of this DVD, however, is it comes with some valuable tools, all of which I highly recommend utilizing before you begin the film. The first time around I hit the ground running, watching the film without doing my research. The second viewing was a necessity after I took the time to check out the special features (Jamaica and It's Music, Glossary, Rastafarian Culture, and Artists and Actors).
Again, this film is a "must see" for any music aficionado as it is a fabulous glimpse into a musical genre that stood to influence such amazing artists such as The Clash, The Police, Talking Heads, Led Zeppelin and an endless list of others. You can be sure this one will be added to my collection.
- The information for my notes section this week was taken directly from the Special Features sections of the "Rockers" DVD.

DI'S NOTES:
With the arrival, or near arrival of winter, or maybe it's the past holidays malaise, I've dug myself into some books. My favorite genre being music bios, memoirs and articles upon a recent trip to Borders I made my way to the music shelves. I was pleased to discover that "Kill Your Idols: A New Generation of Rock Writers Reconsiders the Classics" (Forward by Jim DeRogatis; edited by DeRogatis and Carmel Carillo) was out on paper back. A favorite music read of mine is "Let it Bleed: The Life and Times of Lester Bangs, America's Greatest Rock Critic" also by DeRogatis so it's always a treat when I come across a newly written piece by the Chicago Sun Times rock reviewer and sometimes contributor to Spin Magazine. This particular book was conceived in 1995 but it took him nearly a decade to find a publisher willing to put out a collection of bad rock reviews. "Kill Your Idols" is a collection of new generation rock critics rebutting the albums considered essentials by the genera
tion o
f critics that came before them. Sacred cows on the firing line include Neil Young's "Harvest", The Beatles "Sgt. Pepper", Radiohead's "OK Computer", The MC5's "Kick out the Jams", Led Zepplin "IV" and The Stones "Exile on Main Street" as well as Bob Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks"…and that just gets things started. While some of the reviews read as mean spirited and an exercise in antagonism it's a damn entertaining read. Sometimes humorous. Other times infuriating. Credible? Likely not. But I'm finding that reading bad reviews makes you evaluate what it is you love about a particular album in the first place.

Sad Dog MySpace Profile Song of the Week: "Too Lazy To Die" by The Downtrunks
www.myspace.com/saddogkc

FRIDAY, JANUARY 5
The Sixteens, The Bleeding Hands and The Beautiful Bodies @ DAVEY'S UPTOWN
One of the best things to happen in 2006 was the birth of The Bleeding Hands. Former members of The Gaslights, The Litigators hooked up and borrowed members of Seaside Riot and the Rather Nots. I really dig what these guys are going for and with a few more months under their belt they will be aligned to become a force to be reckoned with amongst Kansas City rock-n-roll bands. I'm happy to see they have a few tracks up on their MySpace page where you should make your way to right now then hit the show. The tunes are catchy and the show is good time energy. -di

Rattle & Hum: A Tribute to the Music of U2 @ RECORD BAR

Dirty Muse, The Downtrunks, Satellite Soul and John Nixon @ HURRICANE
The Downtrunks deliver rock, roots n' Americana and released "Three Rings and A Dagger" in 2006. Definitely seated in Americana, "Three Rings" takes you all over the place, from the heavier seemingly Supersuckers influenced rock on "Too Lazy To Die" to a sound that is reminiscent of Festus, Missouri's The Bottlerockets, yet all the while maintaining originality. Somewhere around the middle of the album the sound seems to head towards the pop, but before you know it they bring it back around with a dirty blues song fittingly called "Worn Out Blues" that would go over well in the vampire bar in "From Dusk to Dawn". In the end they drive it on home with some head on Americana Rock. This is one fine album and a must have for you Americana fans looking to support your local musicians. –jaq

DVD OF THE WEEK:
Detroit Rock City (1999)
Set in 1978, four high-school kids, Hawk (Edward Furlong), Jeremiah (Sam Huntington), Lex (Giuseppe Andrews) and Trip (James DeBello) set out to Detroit to see the greatest rock band of all time, KISS. Unfortunately, the road gets rocky, and stays rocky, when Jeremiah's "holier than thou" mother burns their tickets to prevent them from diving into sin with the "Knights In Satan's Service". As with any good teen movie, one of them steels his mother's car and the adventure begins. This flick hits the level of hysterically funny from the first scene. And although the boys' stoner stupidity often turns the joy ride into a train wreck, you just can't look away. The soundtrack ROCKS and features originals by Kiss, Thin Lizzy, Bowie and Cheap Trick as well as some choice covers, including Pantera (Cat Scratch Fever) and Marilyn Manson (Highway to Hell). -jaq

I had some excellent notes written last night but I seemed to have deleted them. RATS! Now I'm too excited about my birthday dinner to re-do it. I'll recreate it over the weekend and tell you all about a great book I'm reading. Stay tuned….and have a rockin' weekend.
