In Memory: Kirk Rundstrom
It is with incredible sadness we find ourselves writing that our friend Kirk Rundstrom, after a valiant duel with esophageal cancer, lost the battle this morning.
Member of bluegrass driving punk band Split Lip Rayfield, punk band Scroat Belly and solo projects, The Kirk Rundstrom Band and Grain and Demise, Kirk was a powerhouse of energy complete with an infectious cat-that-ate-the-canary smile. He not only had outrageous talent for songwriting and guitar playing but was also a showman extraordinaire – breaking strings and breaking hearts. He had a passion for music and lust for life that kept him on the road, even at his weakest, often making the experience feel like church for golden-soul-sinners. On stage or off, he had the ability to make you forget all of your daily woes, sing out loud, dance until your legs-to-neck hurt and made you believe in the power of rock and roll. Since the moment he was diagnosed, Kirk had an outpour of love from family, friends and his beloved extended family, his fans, who offered letters of support, benefits to help pay for treatment and family care, and deafening roars every time he took the stage.
We have lost an exceptional musician, burst of sunshine, a friend, a husband, a father and a spirit to be matched by no other. We will forever have him in our hearts, and through his music, he will live on with us forever. We send out our thoughts, prayers and condolences to everyone touched by his spirit. "whup"

She even offered some words on what to expect. "Sanchez left Cowboy Mouth in November 2006, after 16 years with the band, but his solo music is a far cry from the band's loud southern rock punk style. Sanchez is a song-writer, a troubadour, a story teller with an old soul who will have you crying and laughing with his sweet voice and heart string tugging lyrics."

The backing band on Stanley's latest release also played a part on the "O Brother..." soundtrack.

Filming the KC Music Scene:
L.A. filmmaker Rob Moczydlowsky (Roman Numerals videos) will be filming the Oxblood Records "First Blood" compilation CD release weekend, Feb. 23 and 24, 2007. They will shoot (125) 5-minute interviews on Friday, Feb. 23 and Saturday, Feb. 24, interviewing all of the Oxblood Records bands, as well as other fine local musicians. The goal is to record all of the bands playing at the Record Bar on the CD release line-up, the "concert" portion of the film, add interviews and edit to make a 90-minute documentary to be submitted to 2007 summer film fests.
Interested? Bob would like "as many members of other great (KC) bands as possible to show up for interviews on Friday and Saturday."

It seems there are quite a few live music heads and bands from KC headed out to SXSW this year. Any friend of Sad Dog band or musician (local, regional or national) playing at SXSW 2007, please email us time, venue and date of show so we can add it to our SXSW feature the week before the fest. As we approach the days of heading to Austin for the SXSW Music Festival, I dream of how I will fill my days and the places I will revisit, as I do once a year on my trip South. One place I find myself often on this yearly excursion is Jo's Coffee Shop, across from the Continental Club on South Congress, where I settle in with a lovely chai latte, chill out and watch life roll by. A great spot to people watch, I never really thought of Jo's as a place to get a glimpse of the famous. Recently, a friend of mine preparing for a move to Austin, sent me a link to this austin360.com article about Bass's 12-hour marathon of people watching and caffeine intake at Jo's – Thank you Sharon!
