There's nothing like ever seeing the glory of the sun...

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

Sad Dog MySpace Profile Song of the Week: "Outlaw" by Split Lip Rayfield
www.myspace.com/saddogkc

JAQ & DI'S NOTES:
In Memory: Kirk Rundstrom
It is with incredible sadness we find ourselves writing that our friend Kirk Rundstrom, after a valiant duel with esophageal cancer, lost the battle this morning.
Member of bluegrass driving punk band Split Lip Rayfield, punk band Scroat Belly and solo projects, The Kirk Rundstrom Band and Grain and Demise, Kirk was a powerhouse of energy complete with an infectious cat-that-ate-the-canary smile. He not only had outrageous talent for songwriting and guitar playing but was also a showman extraordinaire – breaking strings and breaking hearts. He had a passion for music and lust for life that kept him on the road, even at his weakest, often making the experience feel like church for golden-soul-sinners. On stage or off, he had the ability to make you forget all of your daily woes, sing out loud, dance until your legs-to-neck hurt and made you believe in the power of rock and roll. Since the moment he was diagnosed, Kirk had an outpour of love from family, friends and his beloved extended family, his fans, who offered letters of support, benefits to help pay for treatment and family care, and deafening roars every time he took the stage.
We have lost an exceptional musician, burst of sunshine, a friend, a husband, a father and a spirit to be matched by no other. We will forever have him in our hearts, and through his music, he will live on with us forever. We send out our thoughts, prayers and condolences to everyone touched by his spirit. "whup"

Not necessarily big fans of Cowboymouth, Sad Dog friend and avid local music supporter Jen Woodall has assured us that Sanchez's solo stands on its own, and, this is not a show to be missed. She even offered some words on what to expect. "Sanchez left Cowboy Mouth in November 2006, after 16 years with the band, but his solo music is a far cry from the band's loud southern rock punk style. Sanchez is a song-writer, a troubadour, a story teller with an old soul who will have you crying and laughing with his sweet voice and heart string tugging lyrics."

Happy Birthday Johnny Cash!

The Autumn Defense and Arthur Dodge & The Horsefeathers @ RECORD BAR
18+ / Advance Tickets available at Record Bar
Featuring John Stirrat & Pat Sansome of Wilco, this Chicago based pop, indie, folk influenced rock band has drawn comparison's to late 60's / 70's folk rock bands the Byrds, Bread and Big Star to name a few.
David Fricke of Rolling Stone describes their self-titled January 2007 release: "This soft-psych subsidiary of Wilco … is a bit like Yankee Hotel Fox Trot (Wilco) with less static and more slow, lovesick Big Star."
A Sad Dog friend (thanks R.J.P.) emailed us the following. "A classic pop band to beat all others. I saw Autumn Defense a few years ago at an under-publicized, minimally attended show at the Grand Emporium and they absolutely blew me away. I was reminded of Big Star, the Zombies and the Left Banke (and the latter not just because they were covered)."
Wilco fans, I will see you at the Record Bar and we can toast to what I expect will be one hell of a show. -jaq

Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys @ KNUCKLEHEADS
with special guest the Midday Ramblers
8pm; $25 adv / $28 dos
Ralph Stanley has recorded nearly 200 albums, however he is out in support of the first album released solely under his own name. No Stanley Brothers. No Clinch Mountain Boys. Just Ralph Stanley. Executive producer on Stanley's self-titled project is T Bone Burnett, the master behind the soundtrack and multiple Grammy Award-winning "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" The backing band on Stanley's latest release also played a part on the "O Brother..." soundtrack.
Burnett says of Ralph Stanley "…one of the two or three most important figures in country music today…. he's a punk singer or a rock & roll singer or a country singer…. he's a mountain singer is what he really is. He's way closer to Elvis Presley than the notion of 'Dueling Banjos."

LOCAL NEWS:
Filming the KC Music Scene:
L.A. filmmaker Rob Moczydlowsky (Roman Numerals videos) will be filming the Oxblood Records "First Blood" compilation CD release weekend, Feb. 23 and 24, 2007. They will shoot (125) 5-minute interviews on Friday, Feb. 23 and Saturday, Feb. 24, interviewing all of the Oxblood Records bands, as well as other fine local musicians. The goal is to record all of the bands playing at the Record Bar on the CD release line-up, the "concert" portion of the film, add interviews and edit to make a 90-minute documentary to be submitted to 2007 summer film fests.
Interested? Bob would like "as many members of other great (KC) bands as possible to show up for interviews on Friday and Saturday."
Email Bob Moczydlowsky at bmoczydlowsky@yahoo.com for more information and to set up an interview time. Please include your phone number in your email.

HEADS UP AND CALL TO ACTION: SXSW Music Festival
It seems there are quite a few live music heads and bands from KC headed out to SXSW this year. Any friend of Sad Dog band or musician (local, regional or national) playing at SXSW 2007, please email us time, venue and date of show so we can add it to our SXSW feature the week before the fest. We want to drum up support for live music, not only on the home front, but out in the field as well.

OTHER NEWS:
"Austin, Beyond the Pedestrian: Shermakaye Bass scopes out the social landscape at Jo's on South Congress for a glimpse of the famous and soon-to-be famous."
As we approach the days of heading to Austin for the SXSW Music Festival, I dream of how I will fill my days and the places I will revisit, as I do once a year on my trip South. One place I find myself often on this yearly excursion is Jo's Coffee Shop, across from the Continental Club on South Congress, where I settle in with a lovely chai latte, chill out and watch life roll by. A great spot to people watch, I never really thought of Jo's as a place to get a glimpse of the famous. Recently, a friend of mine preparing for a move to Austin, sent me a link to this austin360.com article about Bass's 12-hour marathon of people watching and caffeine intake at Jo's – Thank you Sharon! An article that you might need to imbibe in small increments, it's a fun read for Austin lovers, coffeehouse slackers and music aficionados alike. –jaq

10pm; $7
Kansas City's premiere prairie rock ensemble, The Gaslights are about to embark on an international tour across the Eastern states and then on to Belgium and Holland. This will be their last show in Kansas City before hitting the road and the skyway. The Gaslights have had a set back of sorts lately with the exit of guitarist Jon Stubblefield and bassist Quentin Phipps and have also shelved a nearly finished record because of the line-up change. With the bad news comes some good. Sad Dog friend and bassist extraordinaire Bill "Roach" Sundahl of It's Over and the pioneer behind the Crossroads Musical Festival has stepped in to help out The Gaslights for this show and on their international tour. Wow! We knew he was a good guy but that's some kind of character to step up in such grand fashion and on such short notice. OTHER NEWS:
Jandek at SXSW Film And Music
"SXSW Film and SXSW Music are pleased to be able to present a world premiere screening of "Duality of Self," a record of Jandek's September 17, 2006 performance in Toronto captured on a five-camera shoot. In conjunction with the screening, SXSW 2007 Music Festival will feature a live performance from Jandek from 7-8:15pm on Saturday".
For more info on what is or is not Jandek read here: http://tisue.net/jandek/discussion.html if that grabs your attention pick up the DVD documentary "Jandek on Corwood" for more insight on the man behind Jandek. Jandek is possibly one of the greatest mysteries in modern music. Intriguing. And if you are making your way to Austin in SXSW this will be one not to miss.

LOCAL NEWS:
I got wind of some news this past weekend. Those of you that have been around Kansas City for awhile will recognize the name Gary Cloud. Gary is one of KC's great songwriters. He's been on somewhat of a self-induced hiatus from live performance for awhile, after the demise of his last band the Broken Onlys. Others might remember him from his time in Boot Hill. While Gary has been out of public performance he's been home writing, and writing a lot - some 400 songs over the last several years. Gary has always been one of my favorite song writers in the area and it seems that he'll be back soon. This week he hits the practice space to roll out his songs with Honeywagen (who have recently added Jason Beers (of the Cuddly Poos, Brannock Device) on bass into the fold. We're hoping they get out of the practice space with some good new sounds for us all soon. Visitors to Tuesday's Living Room songwriter sessions at Davey's Uptown every Tuesday might get an early glimpse. -di

THEATRE: Kansas City Repertory Theatre
February 2007 marked the opening of the Rep's second theatre, the Copaken Stage at 13th and Walnut. The Copaken Stage kicks off its inaugural season with the rock musical Love, Janis. The book of the same title, written by her younger sister Laura Joplin, inspired this biographical tribute to the 1960's rock icon Janis Joplin. Love, Janis feature's local musicians hand selected by musical director Sam Andrew an original band member of Big Brother and the Holding Company. As Di mentioned above, this fine list of local musicians includes Tim Braun of the Supernauts.

DVD OF THE WEEK:
Border Radio (1987)
This first film by director Allison Anders took four years to complete. It tells the story of Los Angeles punk rocker Jeff (portrayed by Chris D., of the band The Flesh Eaters) as he flees to Mexico after steeling money from a club's safe after being stiffed by the club owner. His bandmate Dean (John Doe) and roadie Chris (Chris Shearer) desperately want to locate their friend and get their hands on their share of the loot. Dave Alvin, from The Blasters also appears in the film as well as a good deal of the soundtrack and Green on Red makes an appearance in one shot of the film. A bit slow moving to start but the beauty of this film lies in the black and white photography and the film's soundtrack.

JAQ'S NOTES:
The Grammy Awards
We are in the countdown to the 49th Grammy Awards, which will air on CBS, Sunday, February 11 (8pm et/pt). Every year I am compelled to sit through this spectacle, which only leads to frustration as I watch the John Mayer's of the music world beat out the Springsteen's. In a way, viewing the Grammy's is one of the few times a year I get real glimpse into the world of popular music. As I have mentioned before, commercial radio drives me crazy so I opted to tune it out years ago. However, my personal ban often creates a handicap in certain circles and conversations, so it's good to check in every now and then.
I will sit through American Idol winner gone mega-star Carrie Underwood's performance as penance so that later I can catch the Police reunion. I will agonizingly sit through the Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance category that includes Beck, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Neil Young and … again, John Mayer. Actually, searching through the list of nominees is quite entertaining and just about anything goes. I found both Enya and The Brian Setzer Orchestra nominated in the same category for Best Pop Instrumental Performance; The Pet Shop Boys are still around and nominated for two Grammy's; there are about 10 "pop" categories leading up to Best Traditional Pop.
I am thrilled to see The Raconteurs nominated for Broken Boy Soldiers because it was one of my favorite albums of 2006 I forgot to mention. The Flaming Lips are nominated for "The Wizard Turns On…" for Best Rock Instrumental Performance, a track off of At War With Mystics, one of my favorite albums of 2006 I remembered to mention. And, of course, Neil Young is nominated more than once for "Living With War". Which probably would have been one of my top albums of 2006 except I somehow lost the damn CD a day after I bought it and never could bring myself to purchase another copy. That goes on my "things to do" list.
All in all there are familiar names scattered throughout, some I feel are deserving of The Grammy and others that confuse me by their nomination. But overall, it's fun, interesting and mindless entertainment, and at times background noise, for a lazy Sunday eve. If I pay close enough attention, I might even learn something.
For those of you with a PC, tune into the following links to brush up on your nominees before the start of the big awards show. Apparently us Mac users just have to wing it.

DI'S NOTES:
The sound of Kansas City Rock-n-Roll shined brightly last weekend at the Hurricane even as the temps dived into single digits. The bands in cue quickly heated things up as new comers The Bleeding Hands set things off. I caught these boys a few months back when they were still sounding pretty green. Not as individual musicians necessarily but they hadn't quite pulled it together as a band. Not the case this time and they all seemed to have found their footing giving a high energy good-times rock show drawing on influences from early rock-n-roll. I liked what they were going for from the start and they are quickly becoming a serious one to watch. Next up, Pendergast. Never one to disappoint, tonight they showcased many tunes off their upcoming release "Between the Bottle and the Pulpit" scheduled for release March 2. In fact, The Good Rev. Tony Ladesich is off in Nashville as I write this mastering the upcoming release with Richard Dodd who has worked with Tom Petty and Steve E
arle a
mong others. We're happy to see this little gem set for release soon as there's been no less then a few road blocks along the way. Next up was the ferocious Crazy Talk. Cock rock at its finest. You will move, you will smile and you will revisit your youth at a Crazy Talk show. There was something in their sound that night as there were things done on the dance floor I haven't seen in a long….no, never. Those boys make the girls and the boys that love them dance or something like dancing….

Truckstop Honeymoon and Joel Kraft @ THE BRICK
I first saw Truckstop Honeymoon at an impromptu stop at Davey's Uptown. Not knowing what the music gods would send my way, I hopped up on a barstool, ordered a frosty cold beverage and settled in. Eventually I fixed my gaze on Mike West and Katie Euliss, a dobro, washtub bass, mandolin …and the music began. A little stummin', a little hummin' and some wide-eyed enthusiasm all made me think I was about to enjoy an evening of the bluegrass variety. Well bluegrass it was, but instead of a little head bopping I found myself grinning from ear to ear with a belly full of laughter and a serious goodtime taking shape. The name Truckstop Honeymoon, if I can remember the gist of the story, comes from the duo heading out on the road right after they tied the knot. Road worn and weary they pulled into the ol' truckstop. The ode to that night can be heard on the self-titled Truckstop Honeymoon and the song of the same name. Here's a little taste, "There was no heart-shaped bed in our hone
ymoon
suite. We slept side by side in two reclined bucket seats. It weren't the Hyatt or the Holiday Inn, we had a 7a.m. check-out after a 4 a.m. check-in."

Pendergast…Wood Roses…Pendergast…Wood Roses…it's an even ticket tonight. And don't you love that kind of ticket. I caught Wood Roses a few weeks back and it was the kind of sound that stops you in your tracks. They're seasoned musicians undoubtedly. Slayer @ MEMORIAL HALL
There's just some things I just don't know that much about. But I can recognize that special something something and this time it comes in the package of a thrash metal band named Slayer. Albeit, not a genre that is regularly visited on the Sad Dog Blog. But with a little research I can tell you this: Slayer's 1986 record "Reign in Blood" was monikered the "heaviest album of all time". I stand witness. I don't often reject free music that is given to me in the purest of gestures but this little gem I just couldn't wrap my heart around. A little too ROCK in the roll for me. For a brief second about two months ago I almost purchased a couple tickets because really, who doesn't love a spectacle. I won't be there Saturday night but I'm confident I have a date with the Slayer before I die. –di

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8
Jeff Black @ DAVEY'S UPTOWN
7:30pm Showtime / $10 Advance / $12 DOS
Originally from the Kansas City area, this musician's songwriter now calls Nashville his home. Years ago I was introduced to one of the greatest mandolin players on the planet, Sam Bush, at The Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Surrounded by mountains, stars and thousands of Festivarians (that's what they call the festival goers in Telluride) all exuding wild enthusiasm, Sam kicked out a tune called "Same Old River" that completely blew me away. In another world at another time, far, far away in a town called Austin, TX, I stumbled upon Jeff Black at around 1:00 a.m. in a small bar. The crowd was polite and quiet, hanging on Black's every lyric and sipping their last beverage of the eve. From this man comes a soothing voice, pure yet still tainted like the cigarette growl hadn't taken effect yet. The song he sang was "Same Old River", and although Sam Bush wooed me with the tune, after that night I would always prefer Black's version. Come to find out this song I loved was writte
n by J
eff Black, I immediately bought his album "B-Sides and Confessions" and I have been a fan since.
Black's early shows at Davey's Uptown are not to be missed. Much like that night in Texas, the crowd is polite yet usually littered with good-hearted hecklers of the KC family and friends variety. I normally find myself sitting on the floor as if I was in front of a campfire and Black leads us in story and song. My favorite part of the show, and Black has not yet failed to please, is his song "Town Topic", an ode to the greasy KC café that we all know, and hate to admit, love. It's basically the story of a night of imbibing many an alcoholic beverage, ending up at the Topic sometime in the A.M. and the beauty of placing the largest order of greasiest grub you've ever had then topping it off with some hot apple pie. It's at this point he makes the observation that if you started walking west from the front door at TT on Broadway and walked almost entirely around the world, you would end up at the front door of TT on Baltimore. Everything begins and ends at Town Topic.
Black is touring on a new album "Tin Lilly", in which he collaborates with some fine musicians, Will Kimbrough, Dave Roe (Bassist for Johnny Cash) and his old friend Sam Bush to name a few. Tonight is a no-brainer pups … early out and early to bed on a school night. -jaq

DVD OF THE WEEK:
One of my favorite publications is "Punk Planet", more for the prose on culture than anything to do with music. A couple years ago an issue arrived in the mail and one of the featured articles was on a band I already loved called Lucero. Considered by most as alt-country it was a bit perplexing that a pub so differently ingrained would do a feature. But read on. Playing shows 250+ nights a year and their DIY stance it began to make sense. A few years later they released the audio/dvd "Dreaming in America". At this point I'll defer to others:
"Sounding like a punkier, rockier version of Wilco, which is to say like a less-alcoholic Replacements, Lucero emerged from Memphis with their compelling brand of Southern country-rock around 2002. A variety of record label and personnel problems dogged their early efforts, difficulties examined in New York filmmaker Aaron Goldman's documentary of the band, DREAMING IN AMERICA, which this live recording accompanies. Including versions of tracks like "And We Fell," "The War," and "California," from their 2005 album NOBODY'S DARLINGS, as well as a variety of cuts from previous releases, DREAMING is both an informative, entertaining live sampling of the band's songbook and a sympathetic portrayal of their struggle to gain a foothold in the music business."
Okay "they" really didn't give you the true experience of the DVD. If you ever wanted to understand what it is that drives a band to demote everything but living on the road here it is. -di

JAQ'S NOTES:
Call to Action: I am in search of Shins tickets!!! The action? – If you have extra Shins tickets please email me at Sad Dog … I would be most grateful to get my paws on a pair. I had to laugh when I saw Di's notes, and thank the stars above, that mainstream radio has not ruined The Shins for me, as I exorcised the commercial haven from my life years ago. Their new release "Wincing the Night Away" is still sinking in while "Chutes Too Narrow" stays close at hand. Today I received an email from a friend letting me know that her friend spaced getting Shins tickets, which reminded me that I had spaced getting Shins tickets. DRAT!!! Sold Out both nights! Once I finished kicking my desk and nearly breaking my toe, I decided I would use my Sad Dog notes this eve, not to enlighten or bore you (whichever it may be), but instead use this section as a platform to plea. I guess I should feel more sympathy for the few who have called me asking if I have extra John Prine tickets. Or, mayb
e I sh
ould just take my own advice and look into those mysterious last minute release tickets. Interesting, when I apply this theory to my own scenario it doesn't give me the hope I thought I was imparting on others. So keep me in mind and you're your nose to the rock and roll ground and let me know if you sniff out a spare.

DI'S NOTES:
It's become very clear to me tonight that I just haven't had enough time for the thing I love. Trying to upload a new CD to your ITunes, only to be so rudely interrupted by a wayward IT guy. Can I have one second at the gym to put on my earphones before Betty Beefcake asks me to be off in 20 minutes before my play list even has the chance to ignite into a full on Parlay fuel fire. Doing happy hour with the boss doesn't seem so bad until you get in her truck and Big and Rich becomes "the only band the really matters". And I'm the only asshole that plays a mainstream early morning radio show that between the chatter plays only The Shins or She Wants Revenge…oh yes she really does. Those days of yore when a cool beverage your best friend and My Bloody Valentine were the only thing within immediate reference….where are you my long lost days.
