Krystle Warren and The Faculty @ DAVEY'S UPTOWN
8pm / $10
A Kansas City native, this singer / songwriter / guitar player / poet moved to Brooklyn, New York about three years ago, and still in her early 20's has performed at the Newport Folk Festival and toured with, Martha Wainwright (one of my favorite female vocalists) and Eryka Badu. Citing Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell and The Beatles as early influences. In describing there sound she writes on her website, "I don't believe it's really anything new. I mean, we're just reflecting on our musical taste. I personally, love classic rock and learned a lot from Brit pop, as well as jazz, R&B – so many styles all stemming from the same thing."
I remember a night about four years ago, my friends Wende and Terie and our new friends, musicians in Jon Dee Graham's line-up de jour, headed back to my Plaza apartment. Wende took a brief walk and came back with Krystle, her friend and band mate Solomon and his upright bass. She grabbed my guitar, Solomon grabbed the bass and we all partied till the wee hours of the morning to the sounds of her stunning vocals and the even mellow tone of the bass.
This wins the "reason to go out on a school night" show of the week. -jaq

Charlie Louvin @ GRAND EMPORIUM
This Country Music Hall of Fame legend put out his first new studio album in over ten February 2007, the self-titled Charlie Louvin, a collection of Louvin Brothers classics. The album features guest performances by Elvis Costello, Jeff Tweedy, Will Oldham, Tom T. Hall, George Jones, Bobby Bare Sr., Blind Eyes, Clem Snide and many more.
"Charlie Louvin's influence on country, alt-country, and their may sub-genres, incalculable. The unique harmonies and lyrical folk poetry of the Louvin Brothers – Charlie's brother Ira died in 1965 - have inspired countless covers of their songs by such artists as Johnny Cash, Gram Parsons, the Byrds, Emmylou Harris, Uncle Tupelo and the Raconteurs." – www.charlielouvinbros.com.

"Charlie Louvin, 79, is the latest in a line fo country war horses who've seen their careers resurrected by well-meaning hipsters." – NPR
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=7718685
One resurrected Louvin Brothers song of note is a favorite of alt-country fans, Uncle Tupelo's "Great Atomic Power."

UPCOMING EVENTS / RELEASES:
April 3 Billy Joe Shaver "Greatest Hits"

Friday, April 6TH @ ZONE GALLERY
Grand Hart: 20 Masterpieces of Modern Art
Do you need a reason to go to First Fridays in Kansas City's Crossroads Art District?
Former Husker Du drummer Grant Hart will show his work, as well as perform, at Zone Gallery, 415 E. 18th St. in downtown Kansas City, Missouri.
1979, a 17 year old Grant Hart founded the now legendary punk rock trio Husker Du with Bob Mould and Greg Norton, and released several recordings on the renowned record label SST, followed by major label stardom on with Warner Brothers. All of this is well known, as is the "rift" between Mould and Hart, and is now another chapter of music history. But a lesser known fact is, using a pseudonym, Hart designed all of Husker Du's award winning album artwork.
GRANT HART: 20 MASTERPIECES OF MODERN ART will feature "both recent and older collage work with history-specific title appropriation authentic to the early days of the American Punk Rock movement, but not unlike specific dada influences of the past century," according to a press release.
Towards the end of the show, Hart will also play a rare solo set with Minneapolis piedmont guitar impresario/roots singer Baby Grant Johnson opening up. Admission to the opening is free, but a small donation is requested for those staying on for the music, which begins at 8:00.
Thanks to Sad Dog friend Andrew Turner for sending us this show info!!

JAQ NOTES:
Amy Winehouse "Back to Black" (Island Records, 2007)
The US release of 'Back to Black' - #1 on the US Billboard Digital Album Chart and debuted at #7 on the Billboard Album Chart
'Back to Black' soon to go triple-platinum
Brit Awards 2007 Winner – British Female Solo Artist
So who gives a shit, right? There have been plenty of albums that have charted in various degrees that you and I wouldn't give one hoot to have in our collection.
And what is up with this new British Invasion of young rebellious women using there music as platforms to get back at there ex's?
Well, 'Back to Black' has certainly earned its accolades and awards, Amy Winehouse is the real thing, and since I bought the album two weeks ago, it has become an addiction.
She draws on R&B and soul, mixing the Motown Sound of the Supremes, Lauryn Hill and a little dose of 60's Dusty Springfield. Winehouse stirs her sexy, sassy, sultry sound with honest, witty and naughty lyrics - lending credence to her tabloid bad-girl image. Her first single, and first track on the album, is an immediately catchy number called "Rehab" where she talks about her refusal to go to rehab after it was encouraged by her management company. After I listened to "Rehab" about ten times in a row, I let the album play through. It stayed strong from the second track "You Know I'm No Good" (about get caught cheating on her boyfriend, with her ex-boyfriend, when he discovers she has a carpet burn) until the last track, a remix version of "You Know I'm No Good" featuring rap vocals by Ghostface Killah.
Winehouse is an unapologetic alcoholic firecracker, a dream star for the press, consistently on the pages of British tabloids. Her most famous bout of alcohol-induced antics came when she heckled Bono during his speech at the Q Awards. "When questioned during an interview about being violent when drunk, Winehouse responded, 'I have a really good time some nights, but then I push it over the edge and ruin my boyfriend's night. I'm an ugly dick-head drunk, I really am." – Wikipedia.
Coifed with a bouffant hairdo, pouty lips and tattoos, Winehouse has gusto and her music is a constant contradiction of the naughty and the nice. I am sticking by this one and suggesting you add it to your shopping list.

LOCAL NEWS:
Anvil Chorus to Call it Quits: (Received via Myspace this week)
Hi All-
Anvil Chorus will be no more very soon. While this news could be taken as sad news...do not fret...it was just time for this to happen and actually, I am quite excited. We are playing this Friday at The Hurricane with David Gaume on bass...then we will finish out our shows on the 30th, the 11th and the 13th with Jenny Carr on bass. Be sure to come and wish us well.
Speaking of Jenny Carr...she is playing in our new project, Mj & The Bear. Although there is no music on our myspace page, there soon will be. Please add us at myspace.com/mjandthebear
You may notice that the members of MJ & The Bear are the same as Anvil Chorus, sans our old bass player and adding Jenny...then your next question may be..why are you breaking up?
Well...there are five Anvil Chorus bands...five....and with the addition of Jenny...we just couldn't call it Anvil Chorus anymore....it was just time to lay that name and all that I associated with it, to bed.
So...here's to new beginnings...just in time for spring!
Thank you all so very much for all of your help and support! See you at the show!

JAQ NOTES:
Anodyne Records Showcase at SXSW – A Good Day for KC!
2:30 – The Hearer's (Anodyne Showcase @ The Parish) Brilliant as usual! Unfortunately the crowd was still trickling in when during their show … most unfortunate for those who showed up later and missed what proved to be a beautifully passionate set filled with old songs and new. There is no denying how much I love this band of merry musicians and the sounds they create.
3:30 pm – The Architects (Anodyne Showcase @ The Parish) With The Parish half full, the Architects pulled out all the stops unleashing another set bursting at the seams with energy. The Architects showed SXSW that KC can, and will, f-in ROCK THE HOUSE!!!
4:30pm – The Meat Puppets (Anodyne Showcase @ The Parish) This was my second time seeing the Puppets in two days and it got better with every show. By the time they hit the stage the house was full, and from what I hear, at capacity with a line to get in. Over the past eleven years I have listened to their recordings with the feeling of nostalgia. No longer!!! Recently picked up by Anodyne Records, the Puppets are back, feet firmly planted in the present, a new album on the way and a street buzz you can't escape. The energy in The Parish was like getting drunk and laughing your ass off with an old friend you haven't seen in awhile. We had a rock moment. We were very happy.
As you know, I am extremely proud of KC and equally proud of the music born in its borders. Today was a great day for Anodyne Records and KC music.

DI'S NOTES:
"The Best of No Depression: writing About American Music" (2005)
I'm hitting the road this weekend for a family visit up to Iowa. I'm taking along the perfect companion for brief opportunities to read, "The Best of No Depression: Writing About American Music". To celebrate No Depression's tenth anniversary and spotlight some of the most important artists and trends in alt.country music, No Depression founders and editors Grant Alden and Peter Blackstock compiled this "best of" pulling from twenty-five of the magazine's best and most representative feature articles. Starting off with a great piece on Alejandro Escovedo, it reveals many aspects about the man that I had yet to learn even as a long-time fan. Since the magazine's founding in 1995 in Seattle, Washington, No Depression has reported on and helped define the music most often referred to alt.country, Americana or roots music. Despite launching a magazine focused on a style of music that continues to fail to register on American pop culture radar and the fact that they were doing it in a c
ity that was having an ongoing love affair with all things grunge, No Depression magazine has become the bible for everyone seeking genuine American roots music.
This anniversary book also features articles on artists such as: Johnny Cash, Jon Dee Graham, Ray Price, Lucinda Williams and post-punk country-influenced bands Wilco and the Drive-By Truckers. Alden and Blackstock have also written a preface in which they discuss the alt.country phenomenon, the history and their editorial philosophy. With a circulation of fewer than 35,000 copies per issue, No Depression remains a relatively small-time player in the media industry. This book is a great introduction to all things alt.country especially those new to No Depression or alternative country as a whole.

FRIDAY, MARCH 16
The Afterparty, The Volunteers and Justin Ripley @ THE BRICK
Far from classic country The Afterparty does evoke the spirit but takes the style through an other worldly dream-like journey. A couple weeks ago they played an entire night at Fred P. Otts. That's a lot of time to fill and they did it grandly, supremely knocking up the pace a bit for their second set. This is a band that seems to enjoy each other's company and rolls the crowd into their fold. Earlier this month, they were out on tour finishing up in Austin where they entered the studio to start laying down tracks for their next release. We can't wait to hear it!

The Hearers, The Family Curse and Andrew Ashby @ THE BRICK
It's rare we get a Hearers show as members of this Indie, experimental, folk and KC originated outfit are split between the California coast and the Midwest plains. Well warmed up from the Anodyne Showcase at SXSW, they will hit KC geared to deliver an always impressive and hot show! Their Anodyne Records Release "Don't Make the Captain Cry" is a gem to say the least. I defer to words from my friend Andrew Turner's Patchchord article when describing this album:
"The disc is like an old wooden box you've discovered in the walls of an empty house, maybe one that once belonged to a family that lived a few doors down from you for years, but to whom you never said a word. You've heard rumors of their tragedy, but never inquired – then or now. One night, after the house has been officially declared abandoned, you sneak in for a look and discover this small, locked box behind a section of pulled-away paneling. As you arrive within the confines of your own home, you look at this box and wonder where you have been. As the wood grain on the box shifts to and fro, you seem to see the face of a person sleeping…what the hell? You turn the box around, snap open the small brass lock on the front and are surprised by not what you see, but instead what you hear…"

Badass Austin singer / songwriter, Jon Dee Graham with his smoke fueled gravel and steadfast wit tells his hard livin' tales unapologetically. At times stalwartly graceful nearly raising tears his shows are not without a good dose of hard hitting rock. Don't stop listening between songs because this man is a storyteller that evokes a belly laugh from everyone in the room. A consummate musician and always noted as a Sad Dog fav, we have been lucky lately getting about two visits from him per year and one never to be missed. His newest release "Full" is in stores now and can be purchased online at www.texasmusicroundup.com

The Paybacks, SSM, Federation of Horsepower and National Fire Theory @ THE HURRICANE
The ferocity of rock-n-roll will be alive and kicking ass at The Hurricane tonight. Two of Sad Dogs' greatest loves will be sharing a stage tonight. In the left corner, local boys Federation of Horsepower and in the right corner hailing from the Motor City – The Paybacks. If you have heard of neither, you haven't been paying attention and should put yourself in the corner. Former Paybacks bassist John Szymanski won't be entirely absent tonight as he is now playing with SSM, also on the bill. Wendy Case still holds reign on guitar and vocals and the highly entertaining lead guitarist Danny Mehtric will also be on set. They are a duo to be reckoned with until you add drummer Bill Hafer then you are just down for the count. Filling out the line-up is new bassist Dave Malash (of Detroit's The Sirens and Wolfbait). Straight up rock-n-roll. First came "Knock Loud", then came "Harder and Harder", and then "Love Not Reason" released in November of last year finishing up one badass trifecta
of recordings. Don't ask me to pick a favorite because The Paybacks have made it impossible. –di

LOCAL NEWS:
We caught wind of some exciting news a couple months ago but to avoid being the spreader of rumors we decided to wait until it was official. KC record label Anodyne Records will be releasing the next record by an old favorite of ours, former SST artists the Meat Puppets. Mixing elements of punk, country and psychedelic rock we're eager to hear what the boys have been up to as this will be their first release since 2000's "Golden Lies" after an 11 year separation the brothers Kirkwood are performing again together. "Rise to Your Knees" will be released in June 2007 with a tour to follow. Stayed tuned for more news as it becomes available.

JAQ NOTES:
Our girl Jaq is in the mix of it in Austin, Tx this week for SXSW. I just got off the phone with her. She had a grand time last night at the Anodyne Showcase where the Meat Puppets where making their debut as Anodyne artists and playing together again for the first time in 11 years. The Hearers and the Architects were also performing and in Jaq's words, "it was a very good day for Kansas City". I hear *tail* of a Wayne Coyne sighting on the streets but to avoid steeling too much thunder you have to wait for the full story next week. –di

DI'S NOTES:
Now hold on a minute. Kansas City does a fairly decent job of keeping this live music lover entertained. Always a good mix of sounds and frequency of good shows is not a problem. Rarely however, do I find the need to be in two places at once, especially on a Tuesday night. Next Tuesday, March 20th presents a problem….one that has caused Jaq, me and a few others to swear more often than we might do on a regular basis. Jon Dee Graham will be playing at Davey's and The Paybacks will be playing at The Hurricane. Granted the venues are just a few miles away from each other, if that. However, both are being billed as early shows starting at 8:30pm. And both bands are ones that barring hospitalizing or very serious other commitments – we simply don't miss. In the grand scheme of the world's problems we recognize that this dilemma might seem a little ludicrous but in our simple little world of music it's one of the books – we're in a pickle. With every problem there is a solution and we ar
e fostering plans….it's not beneath us to beg for some coordination of times for the sake of our enjoyment. Stayed tuned for the results of our efforts. If we fail…might we suggest staying off the roads between 34th & Main and Westport on Tuesday night.

Part II
Well since Jaq is gone this week I thought I would do double duty. It'll be brief but there's stuff here you need to pay attention to. Sunday night I stayed up waaaaayyyy too late considering my friendly alarm clock was going to go off promptly at 5:30am. You will not hear me say this too often…it was totally f*ckin' worth it. I made my way to Fred P. Ott's to catch two bands, The Safes from Chicago (full disclosure - they are friends but I love 'em) and Mike D. Damron former frontman from I Can Lick Any Son of Bitch in the House (forward ICLASOBITH). Admittedly, I was surprised to see these two bands sharing a bill. I like the genre mix up but this one was a bit unusual. After seeing ICLASOBITH only once I was really disappointed when I heard they were splitting last Fall…the full mouth dropped open and shoulders fell - that actually happened when I read the news. A band that good should not split ways, but alas, I have no control of these things. I'm not so worried about things n
ow. They are good, damn good. They seem to enjoy our fine city so I reckon they'll be back and you'll all be there with me next time. We always list MySpace links so you can have listen…I highly recommend you do it this time. He's got a great band including Sam Henry formerly of The Wipers and Morgan Geer of Portland's Drunken Prayer. The night really would have been complete but Mike D. brought along another Portland band Kleveland. This three piece laid waste to the stage. Frontwoman Stephanie Smith is as magnetic as they come. Strong vocals were only shadowed by her love affair with the guitar. Fans of PJ Harvey or Joan Jett would be wise to check 'em out. The night was a triple threat.

SUNDAY, MARCH 11

Mike Damron (I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch in the House) and The Safes @ FRED P. OTTS

Well we just couldn't ask for a better line up. Sad Dog friends The Safes make their way back to KC. Recently out on an extended tour and making their way to Austin. The first time we saw these Chicago boys, the brothers O'Malley, was inside the walls of Fred P. Otts. We loved them then and they only get better. Returning to their original trio line-up we're glad to see The Safes back! A Critic's Choice in this week's Pitch, visit http://www.pitch.com/2007-03-08/music/the-safes/ . Safe travels boys. We'll see you Sunday!

Last year we received that dreaded news that a band we liked was breaking up. I Can Lick Any Sonofabitch in the House put on a great live show and while they are no longer together you should still buy their records. Former ICLASOBITH frontman Mike Damron is out with his solo project and will be showcasing his newest effort for the first time in Kansas City tonight. If it is at all in the fashion of ICLASOBITH you won't want to miss it! Two great reasons to go out late on a school night!

JAQ NOTES:

Love Janis: Kansas City Repertory Theatre

Conceived, Adapted and Directed by Randal Myler

Inspired by the book "Love, Janis", written by her sister Laura Joplin, this rock and roll production is a fantastic portrait of the life of Janis Joplin, to say the least. Two actresses play the role of Janis, the first in the speaking role (Lena Kaminsky), telling her tale through monologues of letters written home from the time she first hit the San Francisco scene to her untimely death by drug overdose. This role portrays the human, tender, scared, lonely, jovial and almost childlike side of the 60's rock icon. The second role is the "singing" Janis, the stage Janis, the hard-edge, Southern Comfort swilling, no nonsense, strong woman that took the world by storm with a voice that has inspired female vocalists to this day. Two women alternate performances as the singing Janis, Kacee Clanton, and whoa-damn, Mary Bridget Davis. Luck was on my side as Mary was on deck the night of our performance. Her portrayal was so spot on I t hink M s. Mary must be channeling Janis herself. A few weeks back I stumbled upon a Supernauts show at Davey's Uptown. Mary Bridget hopped up on stage and laid down her version of "Cry Baby." Chills enveloped my body and the entire room stood mesmerized.

Sam Andrews, member of the original Big Brother and the Holding Company, provided Musical Direction and the production musicians making up Joplin bands Big Brother and the Holding Company and The Kozmic Blues Bands are all local musicians - Tim Braun of the Supernauts (guitarist), Zack Albetta (drums), Ken Lovern (keyboards), Damien "Woo" Salazar (bass), David Sturch (trumpet), Terry Swope (guitar) and Adam Wagner (Saxaphone).

Since "Cry Baby" has been the Janis song blowing me away lately, I added a video of Janis Joplin's performance to the Sad Dog Myspace page. www.myspace.com/saddogkc

This show has been extended through April 1st so don't miss your chance to check it out. I might even be up for an encore.

www.kcrep.org

DI'S NOTES:

Since SXSW is on the horizon I've been reminiscing a bit and wishing I were making the trip this year. But alas, it's not going to be a reality. A couple years ago Jaq and I were racing show to show hoping to make it in the door to see our favorites. Following a Bobby Bare Jr. show we quickly scurried across town with fingers crossed that we'd pass through the doors of the Continental Club to see The Paybacks. The situation looked dour as we approached and we eagerly waited, and begged, to be bumped to the front of the line. Yeah right. While we waited we were digging the sounds of Austin rockers Grady (2005 Austin Music Awards Best New Band Winner) win the house…if we had only left the previous venue a little earlier. While we did make it through the doors to see our beloved Paybacks Grady would escape our efforts. Before leaving Austin I pic ked up Grady's "Y.U. So Shady?" at the best record store on the planet – Waterloo Records. It's been a good purchase for me and I still love their Motorhead meets Skynard sound or as they describe Delta Metal. Just this week I got news of their upcoming release (U.S. release date TBD) "A Cup Of Cold Poison". They are making 1K copies available early through their website www.shadygrady.net and I'll be heading there shortly to scoop up my copy. "A Cup Of Cold Poison" was recorded at Willie Nelson's Pedernales Studio, and features guest appearances by Willie Nelson, Alejandro Escovedo and premiere Canadian songwriter Ron Hynes. Interestingly it seems this project will produce Celtic, Gospel and Heavy Metal sounds all on one record – whew! For those making their way South next week enjoy a cold one and as many shows as you can possibly fit in for me!

Sad Dog Correction - Slim Cessna's Auto Club

Sorry pups! We had the Slim Cessna Auto Club show date listed incorrectly this week in Sad Dog.

Correction:

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7

Slim Cessna's Auto Club, Magicyclops and American Catastrophe @ RECORD BAR
One of the best damn live bands hits the stage at Record Bar tonight, hailing from Denver but the stage is their true home. Utterly charismatic in the raunchiest of ways Slim Cessna doesn't leave anyone standing in place. They demand dancing with their sound bringing in elements of roots country possessed by a fury of rock-n-roll and paying a visit to nearly every genre of American music.
We heard this weekend that American Catastrophe has been added to the bill. Not yet listed on the Record Bar sight, it is listed on upcoming shows on the AmCat sight.

www.slimcessnasautoclub.com / www.myspace.com/slimcessnasautoclub / www.myspace.com/amcat

This is a good time to remind you to Always Always Always contact venues to confirm shows!!! We sometimes make mistakes and unfortunately can't always send out corrections.

Have a great week and Support Live Music!

The Throttlers, Honeywagen and The Lastcall Girls @ DAVEY'S UPTOWN
Sadly, news came our way this week that a band originally on the bill, Crazy Talk, has broken up. Never something one wants to hear about a local favorite. We wish the boys well and we'll be first in line as they put new projects together. No worry, Honeywagen has graciously agreed to fill the void on this killer line-up. The Throttlers are octane charged rock-n-roll that just never play out live enough. Also on the bill, a true crowd pleaser, The Lastcall Girls belting out their brand of Midwest countrified rock/blues. Always witty and terribly charming they give a true sense of what it means to be a rock-n-roll kind of lass from the mid-plains.

Reverend Horton Heat and The Tossers @ THE BOTTLENECK
Ah-ah-ah. You've read it here before and you will read it every time The Tossers make their way to our little neck of the woods. They are a performance not to miss. In the tradition of The Pogues, and do I dare say I almost like The Tossers better? The Reverend Horton Heat, always with great bands in tow, really got it right this time. If you are a fan of traditional Irish sounds with a bit of punk rock flavoring this is the show for you. I can't think of better American Irish rock CDs to recommend. Head on over to their website and load up now, every one of 'em is great. If you like the genre you'll love these boys from Southside Chicago. -di

Slim Cessna's Auto Club and Magicyclops @ RECORD BAR
One of the best damn live bands hits the stage at Record Bar tonight, hailing from Denver but the stage is their true home. Utterly charismatic in the raunchiest of ways Slim Cessna doesn't leave anyone standing in place. They demand dancing with their sound bringing in elements of roots country possessed by a fury of rock-n-roll and paying a visit to nearly every genre of American music. This is the band that will get live music loving Kansas Citians out on a Tuesday night.

DVD:
"American Hardcore" (2006)
American Hardcore is a great first effort debut documentary by Paul Rachman chronicling the history of the American underground hardcore punk years from 1979 to 1986. It includes rare footage and interviews with members of Black Flag, Minor Threat, Bad Brains amongst others. You'll want to check out the special features for the bonus performances. For the music history buff, this film examines in great detail the birth of American hardcore punk in L.A. as a violent reaction to the Regan administration and complacency of middle-class America. It follows the movement, much more politically fueled and aggressive then 70's punk, as it migrates East to DC and NYC.

ON THE TELE:
March 1, 2007 Son Volt on NBC's Late Night with Conan O'Brien, performing "The Picture" off their soon to be released album "The Search". And for those of you who are hoping they hit KC on this tour, it looks like they have a solid spot on the Wakarusa bill.
