Off to the Park

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND!!!

Sad Dog MySpace Profile Song of the Week: The Bouncy Song by The Golden Hearted Whores
www.myspace.com/saddogkc

"Let There Be Rock" – AC / DC

It all started with two women; a tail-waggin' pooch named Max; a few yard beers at Harry's Country Club; an incredible passion for the Kansas City Music Scene; and a desire to share our stories with like minded live music lovers. What started as a fleeting fancy with a readership of 24 pups quickly grew to 600, all by word of mouth. And over the last 3 years we have been committed to sharing our love of music every single Thursday.

Now, 160 e-newsletters later, it is time for the ladies of Sad Dog to take an indefinite holiday and embark on some new endeavors. We will still be avid supporters of live music, taking in as many shows as time will allow. And although you won't hear from us weekly, be sure we won't be able to keep ourselves from shouting out to you adorable pups every now and then.

Please keep in touch and keep us updated on upcoming shows & events at saddog@att.net and www.myspace.com/saddogkc.

Be sure to Keep Your Nose to the Rock and Roll Ground as you never know what new tricks are in the works here at Sad Dog HQ.

As Always –

KEEP YOUR NOSE TO THE ROCK-N-ROLL GROUND !!
And most importantly,
SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC!!
Love,
Jauqui & Diana & Max (the-ever-happy Sad Dog)

Clutch, Bell Rays and Backyard Tire Fire @ THE GRANADA (Lawrence, KS)
$18; 7:30pm
The BellRays describe their sound as maximum rock and soul, while living up to their motto: "Blues is the Teacher –Punk is the Preacher."
Hailing from CA, they channel the sounds of 60's Motown yet pack a punch of solid riff led rock. Front-woman Lisa Kekaula has the stage prescence of Tina Turner and the soulful sound of Aretha. The BellRays "synthesize punk, R&B, funk and psychedelic rock with an undercurrent of gospel and the improvisational approach of jazz." – www.bellrays.com.

Their 2006 release "Have a Little Faith" made my top 10 albums of 2006. It is a powerhouse of soul, blues and rock; lifts my mood; kicks my ass; makes me drive fast; and never leaves me hanging when I need to turn it up to eleven and loose my mind in music. -jaq

THURSDAY, MAY 24
Billy Joe Shaver and The Starkweather Boys @ KNUCKLEHEADS
7:30pm; $20 adv / $25 dos
If I really need to tell you people one more time about my love for Billy Joe Shaver something's not right. My favorite country songwriter for sure and I'm in good company cause Johnny Cash called him his "favorite songwriter" period. His biography is the saddest I've read. Despite a life full or tragedy Billy Joe still holds onto a spirit that that clearly indicates music is a fundamental part of his being. He's a music outlaw no doubt but lives life the same way. We weren't sure he was going to make it to Kansas City as recently he was involved in a shooting in Texas but it looks like the law hasn't taken hold just yet. Waylon Jennings recorded an album "Honky Tonk Heros" of Billy Joe's songs as many others have taken to recording his songs as well, including: Elvis Presley, Willie Nelson, George Jones, The Allman Brothers, David Allan Coe and Roy Acuff. But it's only Billy Joe that can really make the songs come to life with that big fat grin and his fancy jigs. Compadre Records
has assembled eighteen of Billy Joe Shaver's most popular tunes to create his Greatest Hits collection released in April 2007 and features two previously unreleased Shaver songs. –di

JAQ'S NOTES:
Future of Music Coalition: Rock the Net, "Musicians for Network Neutrality"
"Network Neutrality – or Net Neutrality – is the principle that preserves a free and open Internet. Net neutrality ensures that all users can access the content, or run the applications and devices of their choice. Rock the net is a nationwide coalition of musicians and labels that support net neutrality. We come together at this critical time to demonstrate to Congress and the FCC the music community's broad support for this principle. As musicians and entrepreneurs, we understand the importance of treating all websites equally – from the busiest online music store to the smallest blog. We urge congress to support network neutrality." – www.futureofmusic.org

Visit http://www.futureofmusic.org/rockthenet/AboutNN.cfm to learn more about Network Neutrality; view a full list of founding bands (bands include R.E.M., Pearl Jam, Calexico, John Doe, OK Go, Les Claypool and more); join the campaign; search for campaign's shows and events; learn more about the rock the net campaign; and access fan petition sign-up link.

DI'S NOTES:
Got news this week that Mike's Tavern has been sold. All bands remain on the schedule until the end of this month…all other band dates after that have been cancelled. No word yet on if the new owners will continue to provide a venue for music, but the word on the street doesn't sound good. The doors will be shut for awhile as the new owners "remodel" let's all say a little prayer that it doesn't go the way of the Grand Emporium. While Mike's Tavern live music scheduling over the last 10 months has been sporadic at best I will always hold some fond memories for shows that happened inside those walls. AC/DC female tribute band Hells Belles being one of the favorites. They packed the place and were simply a down right good time. Federation of Horsepower tore up that stage as did The Ramalamas may they rest in peace. My favorite Last Call Girls show and a couple of the best Golden Hearted Whores shows, yep, they happened at Mike's.? Not to mention it was less then a 7 minute drive from
my house to the bar. I wouldn't have ever called myself a regular but the feeling was always warm. Some day Sad Dog will figure out a way to host some of our favorite band photos. Both Jaq and I like to snap some from time to time. I'm not a talent but the luckiest shots seemed to happen at Mike's. Our Kansas City venues seem to continually thin but the music sure doesn't. Keep getting out there to support KC Live Music and Venues.

FRIDAY, MAY 11
Brave Combo @ DAVEY'S UPTOWN
9:30pm - $12 Advance / $15 DOS
"Brave Combo have long been enthusiastic ambassadors of modernized ethnic dance music long before the terms 'worldbeat' and 'world music' were in vogue. Their recordings generally include equal parts Eastern European, Latin influenced, and original zaniness". - iTunes
Brave Combo was voted "Best Denton Band" in the 2007 Denton Record Chronicle's "Best of Denton" Awards; they played Oktoberfest in the beloved American burg of Springfield on an episode of "The Simpsons" and their music displays a fascinating yin and yang mix of utterly and delightfully surreal, juxtaposed with perfect sense and wisdom. – Davey's Uptown
From what we hear you should wear your dancin' shoes tonight.

Michele's Heavy-Duty Rock Party Birthday Bash @ DAVEY'S UPTOWN
8pm, $9 Advance / $12 DOS (Guaranteed Early Show)
Featuring: Nashville Pussy, Artimus Pyledriver and Three Bad Jacks
Tonight, it's the "Never to Old to Rock show!"
Nashville Pussy may be the most recognizable name on the bill but I think the real treat tonight is going to come in the form of Artimus Pyledriver. Hailing from Atlanta they give a sound described as "southern stomp-ass". A little metal, a little stoner rock and wholly Southern. Among their influences are some of my favorites including Kyuss, AC/DC, Motorhead and yes Skynrd! Every week as I sit and write Sad Dog I browse MySpace and let the music coming our way play as I type. This week I can't click away from the Artimus Pyledriver page. If you count yourself as a fan of the heavier side of music I suggest you head that way now. www.myspace.com/artimuspyledriver

THURSDAY, MAY 17
Shooter Jennings, Scott H. Biram and The Gaslights @ BEAUMONT CLUB
Son of Outlaw Legend Waylon Jennings, Shooter has a bit to live up to … but is holding his own. Although his debut album, "Put the O Back In County" less than impressed, his 2006 release "Electric Rodeo" made my top ten of 2007. Raw with the rock, southern style I might add, while tapping into the sound of the Outlaws who raised him, "Electric Rodeo" is a gem that will have you rockin' as well as slow dancin'.
On the bill with Shooter is the self-proclaimed "Dirty Old One Man Band" Scott H. Biram - And Bonus – KC's own rock n' country quartet, The Gaslights will show this Beaumont crowd exactly what our Midwest town has to offer. -jaq

JAQ'S NOTES:
Off to Omaha for work tonight pups, but I will be back this weekend to kick off a full week of live rock!

DI'S NOTES:
Maybe it's the lack of available time I've had to see shows lately that still has me on a high from my outing last Tuesday. I headed down to the Boozeday Tuesday Show @ The Brick with Federation of Horsepower and Austin's Honky. No, I'm quite certain it's the fierceness of the rock that assaulted the stage that has created this high. It's that kind of down and dirty rock show that wakes you up for days and was just the ticket to knock me out of my show going slump. Perfect bands, perfect line-up, awesome bar staff, good company, ears ringing, insides vibrating, just about my favorite kind of show. A trip to NYC for a wedding kept me from seeing the first two of Honky's appearances in their Kansas City triptych of sound but I'm going with the idea that I saw the best of the three. If you missed the show and now want to see what all the hype is about visit their MySpace page at www.myspace.com/honky. While their songs can take up residence in your head please note this is one of thos
e bands you need to experience live. We're guessing they are slightly fond of our fair city playing 3 shows inside 5 days indicating a sure bet they'll be back. Pay attention next time and don't miss these boys.

FRIDAY, MAY 4
Honky and Pendergast @ THE BRICK
It's a short list of bands that would get me out three times, inside 5-days, in one city and Honky is one of them. Every thing you read about Honky will mention their featured member Jeff Pinkus of the Butthole Surfers and that is quite a treat. However, my eye always deadpans on guitarist Bobby Rock. I have no idea what he is doing but it sounds so good…it's gotta be great. Fans of the Butthole Surfers' sound will strain an ear to find something reminiscent because Honky resides in a house free of psychedelic rock favoring a more dirty home-style-Southern flavor that can only be called "bad ass". This is the first night of their Kansas City trifecta. Lined up tonight with the equally badass roots rock Kansas City born – Pendergast. -di

Unfortunately a burst of cold weather forced the first Mercy Seat Alley show with the Roman Numerals to be cancelled. SATURDAY, MAY 5 Cinco de Mayo!
Donkey Show 15 @ RECORD BAR
Spice of Life Productions & Jose Cuervo
Present: Donkey Show 15 "Cinco De Mayo Fiesta!"
KC's Premier Variety Show
9pm sharp / 21+ / $10 or $8 if you wear any Mexican influenced outfit
Donkey Show Fiesta is the brainchild of Wende Williamson, Stage Manager/Creative Director. While she has always come up with any of the really good ideas at the Donkey Show, this one will top them all.
Featuring: Full Contact Pin the Tail on the Donkey Contest, Piñata and killer entertainment with:
The Afterparty: {7 piece Americana} Smooth Americana with Latin hints and rock sensibility. Well crafted, well executed songs of love, life, lust, and dancing. Featuring Members of the Pink Socks, Dirty Mae, Spaghetti Western Orchestra, Golden Hearted Whores, Von Hodad Western Surf Outfit, Etta Vendetta's Eyeful Tower, and many more.
Trio Aztlan: {Latin Acoustic Band} Playing traditional Mexican songs, as well as their own compositions, these three musicians will add some of the Mexican feel to the show. They play all over town and at Manny's every weekend. This will be their umpteenth show of the day. We are lucky to have the best Latin band in KC for you.
Evil Beaver: {Rock & Roll} Bass, Drums and Evil. This Duo is, for lack of a better term, a fist to the ear and/or throat. They have been recorded and produced by some of the country's finest, and have shared the stage with the likes of: White Stripes, 400 Blows, Bell Rays, Chevelle, FuManchu, The Gossip, Imperial Teen, Lightning Bolt, Millionaire, Nina Hagen, Peg Boy, Rasputina, and Shellac.
Karim Memi: {Tango/Spanish Guitar} Originally from Argentina, Karim began playing guitar as a child. By the age of 17 she was performing professionally as a vocalist and guitarist. She became proficient in a range of musical styles, including jazz, Argentine country music, bossa nova, and Argentine tango, which she performed in the theatres of Buenos Aires. Karim's instructor in both singing and playing tango was Horacio Salgan, a highly recognized composer, director and pianist in the history of tango. In 1988 Karim lived in Paris for a year and was featured at the well-known Parisian tango bar "Trottoir de Buenos Aires."
Jason Beers: {Singing Saw} Jason has played a couple of Donkey Shows in the past with Wild Chipmunk & the Cuddly Poos and the Wyco Lowriders, but will be showing us his versatility on the saw with a rousing rendition of 'La Cucaracha'
Potter Productions: {Comedy} To put it bluntly, Mike Potter is one funny son-of-a-bitch. He dresses in character and stays that way until the outfit comes off. I'm not sure what to expect from him. One of the fun things about working with talented people is I can say to them, "Do whatever you want." So he might be in drag, or a Magician, or a British storyteller, or something completely different.
Tuber Theatre: {Potato Puppets} We at Spice of Life will tell the exciting tale of The Battle of Puebla, the reason Cinco De Mayo is celebrated, in our way of course.

Bikers Against Child Abuse Fundraiser @ KNUCKLEHEADS
Bands and Silent Auction
What a venue! There's nothing better then hearing music under a Midwestern sky and if it benefits young-ins you're golden. Take some bikers and give them a worthy cause. We borrowed this descriptive of the event from an online forum "For those who don't know what BACA is...Bikers Against Child Abuse...it's a group of bikers who adopt families who are going to court for child abuse...they protect the kid from the parent in question, giving the kid a sense of empowerment so they're not scared...and, quite frankly, will beat the living fu*k out of anyone who tries to hurt the kid. Anyhow, they're having a ride-in bike show and silent auction this Saturday from 10am to 2pm at Knuckleheads...proceeds go to help them out as they often have to take off work to stay with the kids."

Social Distortion, I Hate Kate and The Black Halos @ BEAUMONT CLUB
Rearing their head during the late 70's punk explosion in CA, Social Distortion has held cult status since. Led by charismatic punk rock icon and heartthrob Mike Ness, the band has matured like a fine wine yet still rock their fans like ice cold PBR. Their first career spanning Greatest Hits release is due out June 26, 2007 on Time Bomb Recordings. I've seen Social D twice in the last couple of years and the boys always have me jumpin' around like a teenager and yelling for my favs "Cold Feelings", "Ball and Chain", "Prison Bound", the Johnny and June Cash cover of "Ring of Fire", and of course, "Making Believe." A set of Social D is always a set of gems. Through years, and my collections of discs gone missing, I find myself with only one Social D album left in my collection, Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell, which is always close by. If you need some research material or just want to get in the groove for the show, I highly suggest you spend some time with this album. Another gre
at tool for setting the show mood is the 1984 film "Another State of Mind: Social Distortion, Youth Brigade and Minor Threat" which documents the exploits of these three punk bands as they attempt to hit 30 cities in 35 days in a beat up school bus. Social D is this week's best reason to say F-It and stay out late on a school night.
Opening up is I Hate Kate – Alternative Pop Rock from CA and Canadian Punk Rock band Black Halos. -jaq

WEDNESDAY, MAY 9
The Throttlers and Broken Teeth @ DAVEY'S UPTOWN
Mama always said be careful what you wish for. Mama may have given us too much leeway. Did she know we'd have a week so jammed packed of rock-n-roll? Broken Teeth beats the highways out of Austin, Texas. Featuring former members of Dangerous Toys, Dirty Looks and Pariah this band is fist pumping, head banging good times.

DI'S NOTES:
September 8, 2007 Crossroads Music Festival
I'm gonna toot some horns…not my own but some folks very close to me. Our very own Jauqui has been putting in time on the Crossroads Music Festival with our dear friends and founders Bill Sundahl and Wende Williamson. These passionate folks are gearing up for the third year. I was lucky enough to be a volunteer/gate keeper in the launching year (2005) and it was the most fun I've had (while "working") ever.
My day job doesn't allow me to be a part of it anymore as I'm traveling over Crossroads dates (yeah, damn them for not checking with my schedule.) The first year it was a great little gathering of local music lovers and bands, outdoors for a day in September. Last year they stepped it up a bit and every one happily told me what I missed. (damn them again!) This week I received the email announcing the line-up and our friends are gonna do you well….check it out: Eleni Mandell, Truckstop Honeymoon, Chico Banks & The Candy Lickers, It's Over, Roman Numerals, ZEEGRASS, Supernauts, Kasey Rausch, Rumblejetts, Gaslights, The Last Of The V8s, Pendergast, Grand Marquis, Federation Of Horsepower, Afterparty, Super Black Market, Leeann Atherton, Lucky Graves, Down Trunks, Be-Non, Jon Yeager, Buttermilk Boys, Expassionates. Point to Note: this is a great day out for families. (i.e. bring the kids and start them out on a good path!) Take your kids, dance a flurry and have a cold one for me.
More news at 11….stay tuned.
